    Why does Jake get to call what pitch? The catcher is the on-field general of the team; the quarterback, so to speak. He's the only player facing the rest of the team, and who everyone else can see all at the same time, so he can direct fielders to whatever positions they should be in (shifted in, out, left, right) considering the batter, the score, runners on base, and what inning it is. He studies all the opponent's batters so he knows which pitch is best to call in any situation. He's the smart one.

    • @derekfnord
      @derekfnord 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      The catcher needs to know what the pitcher is going to throw so he can be ready to catch it. The pitcher can't easily signal his intended pitch to the catcher because he's facing the batter. So instead, the catcher calls for a pitch, and the pitcher either throws that pitch or shakes the catcher off until the catcher calls for the pitch the pitcher *_does_* want to throw.

      I think it's a broader film than say, BULL DURHAM which has pretentions (Which, I mean... It probably fulfills those pretentions.) of being a true to life film with humor laced through than a straight up comedy like MAJOR LEAGUE.
      For me, while Durham is probably the better "film", MAJOR LEAGUE is just a crackerjack comedy running on all cylinders. Cast all pull their weight and the script is fun and it's tight and well paced. I think it has entered the pantheon by now for sure.

    One of the best fan theories is that Jobu actually made curve balls nearly impossible to hit. That's why Cerrano wasn't able to hit a curve ball until he renounced Jobu, and why Harris pitched such an amazing game, because he had made peace with Jobu, and had him at his feet while he was warming up.

    Bob Uecker, the play by play announcer for the Indians in this, is still calling some Milwaukee Brewers games for the radio station WTMJ-AM at the age of 90. He's been doing it since 1971.

    Bob Uecker is a real play by play announcer for the Milwaukee Brewers and he was also a TV actor. Most of the actors in this movie including Charlie Sheen played baseball at some competition level. The batting order is the order you bat in. It can't be changed or it's an out for batting out of order. You can bring in another player to pinch hit. Once the ball goes over the wall or yellow line if it hits something and comes back onto the field still a homerun. The stadium was the old stadium the Brewers played in so not filmed in Cleveland. You will like Major League 2 plus Caddyshack 2

    In baseball, the batting lineup is set at the beginning of the game for both teams and stays that way for the whole game. If a player has to leave the game (perhaps for an injury), his substitute bats in his position in the lineup. Sometimes, a pinch hitter will bat for a player and then a different player will substitute for the replaced player on the field.

    In the "almost a comedy sports movie", you might enjoy "The Replacements" featuring a very young Keanu Reeves. It's about the brief player's strike in the National Football League many years ago, and some teams ended up hiring "just dudes to play football" (they had to be able to play a role in football, of course) so they could play the games for the fans. The movie is a highly fictionalized story about that time, but it's the same kind of fun-- cast of characters brought together in an unusual circumstance having to learn to work together.

    At 7:35, I think it's both! lol I could be wrong, but I think the guy training with Jake was purposefully throwing bad pitches so that he would be prepared for those bad pitches thrown to him from pitcher in actual games. Also, the catcher will get funny bouncing balls like that thrown from the fielders and/or cutoff men trying to throw someone out at home plate. Repetition and practice to prepare the catcher for all possibilities.

Gardner, pleaded for help in finding his boy, even offering to pay him for his time, but Ahab had refused, not wanting to lose any time in his hunt for the White Whale.
    This was an extremely bad move on the part of Ahab, not exactly criminal, but highly irregular. Even today, all ships and boats are suppose to answer a distress call if they can.
    The coffin was a symbol in the story, but a symbol of salvation, as it was the coffin that he Ishmael used to stay afloat in the open sea until he is found by the whaleship Rachael. At the start of the book Ishmael finds a room in the Spouter in in New Bedford and mentions the owner of the in is one Peter Coffin. And it is actually Queequeg's room he rents, and when Queequeg returns unimpededly Ishmael and Queequeg become friends.

    Now that you're in on baseboll, how about "A League of their own". It has Tom Hanks, Geena Davis and Madonna.
    And since you're in on sports. Mighty Ducks is a must-see.. That one is about a kids hockey team. That one is featuringf Emilio Esteves. A great movie as I recall it. Loved it as a kid.

    The Natural (baseball w Robert Redford) or Hoosiers (basketball / Gene Hackman) are classics. The Fan with Robert DeNiro and Wesley Snipes is a sports thriller.

    If you liked galaxy quest, "the orville" is what it might have been like as a TV show. There are only 3 seasons and it was created by seth MacFarlane, the man who created family guy and "ted".

    So the lady trying to move the team to florida was originally written to just be lying. There was no offer on the team and she actively was giving them a villain to unite and work against. i prefer that version but this one works too.

  • @bjgandalf69
    @bjgandalf69 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Jen, the original ending for this film had the reveal that the owner lied about wanting to move the team to motivate them to succeed which she secretly wanted. The test audience hated this twist as they liked hating her so the scene I linked below was cut from the film and new reactions for her were filmed for the final game. She was shown to have changed her tune and cheering them on in the original cut.

    Miracle is the greatest sports movie. Based on the ture story of when the NHL (professional hockey league in US and Canada) didn't allow their players to play in the olympics. So USA put together a team of players not good enough to play in the NHL and play against other countries professional players in olympics. I won't spoil it how it turned out.

    The old Stadium was the ultimate dump . You could get stuck behind a girder if you bought the wrong ticket and don't ask about the troths in the Bathroom !!!!!!! Plus they shared it with the Browns so the grass was sometimes painted dirt!!!!! Bob Uecker was the play by play announcer for the Brewers so it was very real the way he called the games !!!!!! When a Cleveland teams makes the Playoffs tis crowd was calm compared to the real thing ,
