Yes Jen, the trick is to tame the dragon and then ride it… Donkey has that well in hand 😏
Re. the animation. Shrek came out about 6 years after Toy Story, which had been the first full-length CG animated feature, so it wasn’t exactly groundbreaking in that sense. It did kind of break Pixar’s monopoly on big box-office success for CG animated movies, though, and it did make some pretty big technical advances in realistic vegetation and terrain (all the grass blades, trees, leaves etc) and fluid animation. The close-up shot of the milk being poured was pretty advanced for its day, and so was all the fire that the dragon breathed. Shrek 2 is DEFINITELY worth your time!

Many people nowadays think the animation looks dated. But they do not realize the look of the movie matches many of the classic 1950 & 1960's illustrated children's books that had that exact look. What they see as "dated" is actually artistic style.

If you think about it, Dragon is another example of the movie's theme about things being more than what they appear on the surface. In guarding that castle, Dragon probably never met anyone who didn't immediately try to slay her, so Donkey probably was the first to (flattery or otherwise) actually _be_ nice to her.

Just to add more to this story, Shrek was literally a punishment for DreamWorks writers and animators who were working on too many underperforming movies. It was referred internally to as being "Shrekd" and was basically a cover for them being fired when the movie bombed.
Because it was a punishment project the execs basically didn't have any oversight of it, and shockingly, letting animators and writers make the movie produced a far better result than accountants and lawyers did

How groundbreaking was the tech in Shrek: Toy Story was the first feature length CGI film and was released in 1995. Shrek released 6 years later. These movies are a world apart as far as detail, textures and lighting are concerned. Dreamworks gave Disney/Pixar something to be scared of.
Fun fact, per Cameron Diaz's request in her contract, video of her in the studio is not allowed to be released to the public. This is a shame because the tiny bit of footage shown in a behind the scenes feature is one of the cutest things I've ever seen.

1:43 my daughter recently admitted to me that when she was 10 or so, she thought the SmashMouth lyrics were “Hey now, you’re a rock star…get laid!” She was trying to understand why this was appropriate for a children’s movie and the some would always embarrass her. I really felt bad that I didn’t know and could have corrected it, but I also feel bad that I laughed really hard when she told me.
When she was little and would get scared, I’d always tell my daughter that I was scarier than anything wherever we were. Don’t know if it helped, but I usually got a laugh out of it.
29:36 there’s a song called “I’m a Princess” (can’t remember the artist but she does children’s song’s) that talks about taming a dragon instead of killing it.
29:59 never understood why this is considered romantic since the origins of it is to allow anyone who has a greater financial or political claim to possession of the bride (not someone who might be a better fit) to speak up and make his claim.

Have you seen the movie Babe? The "That'll do, donkey, that'll do" line is a reference to that movie (which, by the way, is wonderful). The name Shrek is presumably inspired by the German word schreck, meaning terror.

That's correct Jen ... the computer animation of this movie was groundbreaking setting the benchmark for others that followed like The Incredibles. I remember being stunned just looking at the grass as the characters walked through it. It won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature in 2002.

Shrek was a very noticeable mile stone for CGI at the time, what they did with the tech at the time, was for this guy who was into and dabbling in CGI as a hobby, off the charts... not to mention the movie was quite a departure from the typical animated movie in terms of story and structure (the use of pop culture music was new) and while movies like Toy Story where first in doing the songs in an animated movie that weren't sung by one of the characters, Shrek took that a step further.
The sequel also pushed CGI forward as well (the trees in a few scenes are 'WTF thats good' that at the time when seeing them my mouth literally fell open), Pixar was the big one for pushing the envelope typically in teh 90s and 00s but Dreamworks was at the time also no slouch either... it was around the time of the third Shrek movie that CGI kinda slowed down, which was the same year Ratatouille came out which is still in my opinion the pinnacle of animated CGI.

I'm becoming a connoisseur of Jen's laughs. They're all fun, but there's one variety perhaps more musical than the others: two quick notes in descending thirds, sort of an "uh-oh" laugh. Love it! See 6:49.

I was never a Mike Meyers fan in any way, shape, or form. But his "If it's not Scottish, it's CRAP" character from SNL is perfect because it plays against this Eddie Murphy trope PERFECTLY.

Shrek's lines were originally recorded in Mike Myers Canadian voice, but it seemed off. After discussing it with the director and giving him examples, they redid the entire movie in a Scottish accent. Myers did it for free because it would make the character and movie so much better. You missed it, but mama bear went missing and you see her later dead as a rug when Lord F is looking at his princess over and over while in his bed.

Before his untimely death, Chris Farley was to voice Shrek instead of Mike Myers.
Myers agreed to do the role on behalf of his late friend.

I love the bit where Shrek and Donkey are making fun of Lord Farquaad.
Shrek: Let me put it to ya this way, Princess. Men of Farquaad's stature are in SHORT supply.
Donkey chuckles- I don't know, Shrek. There ARE those who think LITTLE of him.
