once again with gorgeous control + breath work (plus that insane high note towards the end??). this one felt so raw & vulnerable-exactly how i feel the song should be sung. the "cold and broken"ness of the hallelujah was palpable through the screen. really beautiful work, colm
This is what I sang alone at my wife’s funeral in my poor and broken baritone voice. I kept my promise dear. It’s been 2 years now and still makes me hurt… makes me wish that I never gave up social drinking, a large scotch neat would help about now.
I'm sorry for your loss.
My condolences.
Wish the best for you, hope things will get better
I hope one day you are able to heal
That’s so heavy. Hoping for comfort from God for you in this difficult time.
Chills from the first words, brother bear. Absolutely a beautiful cover of a masterpiece song, this was anything but a cold and broken Hallelujah.
Cheers mate, hope you and yours are having a most excellent New Year
This is a beautiful cover. Hallelujah is a song that needs to be truly genuine, or it comes off as fake, and this cover just works.
Also, the pure range, especially in the last chorus, was amazing
when I listen to Leonard Cohen's performance of this song, the impression I get is of grief that has almost healed. Whereas this one, the grief seems fresh, and that hit me right in my soul. These scars take time to heal.
That's because Cohens version is about his joy of getting with a women. It's funny how this song gets 'repurposed ' to mean other things to people
This is one of those songs that is different for every rendition. some are full of grief and regret, some are full of the promise of a new day, some are full of the freshest pain, or some combination of all.
indeed they do take time to heal. but they they do heal.
When I sang this at my wife’s funeral I took a page from Leonard Cohen. He kept adding verses to the song and encouraged singers to change or add their own verses to the vocals. If you sang all the un official and officially recognized verses you would have a song almost 20 minutes long! So I added my own last verse… A day will come when I stand before he lord of hosts and he will ask me what moved you most? I will say your hallelujah.
This cover genuinely gave me chills. My grandfather loved this song and recently passed away but I know he would have loved this.
I'm performing it at his funeral, and hearing you has calmed a lot of my anxieties around the entire situation.
Thank you for posting this cover Colm, you are truly a blessing to this platform.
@-Wyrmwoods- My condolences on the loss of your grandfather. I absolutely love this song and like you, this version gave me chills. It may be the best version I've heard and I've heard nearly all of them. I'm glad you'll be performing it at his funeral. Would like very much to hear your version.
what a wonderful thing to do I know he will love it..I am very sorry for you loss
Hope you are doing ok
I wish you all the strength and courage in this world friend. My grace and fortune guide your path.
Put this on in the background while peeling potatoes, and 4:37 made me physically drop what I was doing and say "holy shit". Well done, as always.
I found out about this song when I watched the first Shrek cartoon. You plunged me into my childhood. I used to love listening to this song. Thank you so much for this magical song. I'm going to review the cartoon.
Few artists are able to replicate the raw emotion in the song.
And you nailed it!
I think it'd be kinda of interesting to see an Irish/Celtic-style arrangement of this.
There is a Catalan cover❤
by Gerard Quintana, leader of a well known old pop rock band Sopa de Cabra, from Girona (not Barcelona😅)
I have had an absolutely awful start into 2024, but you posting a video this week has made me happy again! Thank you for all you do Colm.
I am sure 2024 will be your year and whatever troubles you may have youll overcome
I’m sure things will pick up for ya soon, friend. Wishing you all the best.
Wishing you the best from here on out. Keep listening to this gorgeous song to hold you up. Sending blessings 🍀💚
Beautifully done! Great work as always, Colm ❤
Sir I can't' begin to thank you enough for you singing this. This is one of my mother's favorite songs and I sent her this video. I waited to hear reply before I wrote this. She called me crying and through her tears she told me how beautiful it was and that she loved it, she also wanted me to tell you thank you for recording this song. I can tell you with all honesty that you are one of my favorite singers and this cover is one of the best I have ever heard. Thank you so very much from the bottom of my heart❤. God Bless from Missouri U.S.A
OMG Colm, I'm in love with your cover of one of my favorite songs of all time. Leonard Cohen would be thrilled hearing this.
what a set of pipes on this handsome lad. Not just super low all the time, but chillingly high and resonant as well! Bravo!
My father passed away Sunday. I got to spend time with him the day before. I just made it back home finally, sat down and saw this song was out. I listened to this and finally cried. This was beautiful. Thank you.
Ashes to ashes dust to dust may he rest in peace and I hoe you prosper
This used to be the one song to make me just start weeping no matter where I was. It has a lot of sentimentality and bitter emotions for me. I thought I worked past that from listening to it over and over.
It all came flooding back.
Love the falsetto! Apparently you can do everything 😂 4:30 till end should be a short! You’d draw people in like moths to a flame!
Amen!
That was impressive but I was even more impressed about the
flawlessly delivered lowest notes.
Gorgeous and raw. Just like this song ought to be.
So many different renditions of this song and this is definitely my new favorite. I absolutely love this
This was played at my Daughter's funeral
my condolences
So sorry for your loss
Be strong. Stay strong.
Chills and tears are running silently running down my face. Sheer raw beauty and perfection! Your talent is unlimited. 🍀💚
I just can't. It's so heartbreaking. This may be my most favorite rendition of the one of my most favorite songs. Literally brought tears to my eyes. I love it, Colm. You're brilliant.
Incredible cover of the song, have you considered doing Hotel California in the future? Just an idea
Your voice fits perfectly with aiming at the Jeff Buckley version. 🙂 (And I wish you can do Linkin Parks Numb sometime.)
Your voice changes so much near the bottom. Envious of your larynx. Possibly you're doing exactly what you were meant to do. Keep it up xoxo
It's an insanely beautiful cover, though, all you ever get is a magic cover, dear Colm! Thank you for the beautiful, high notes, thank you for your beautiful voice and for this wonderful cover. Under this wonderful cover, you can fall asleep and imagine the most beautiful and tender plots, thank you, Colm 🙏
This feels like Leonard Cohen and Jeff Buckley doing a duet. I would love to hear the two tones come together on a final chorus.
That was stunning. You have such range, and your voice suits the song perfectly. Thank you for this.
Colm, that was absolutely gorgeous from beginning to end. Those notes were insane. Thank you!
hard to pay hommage to cohen, buckley and john cale all in one fell swoop. breathtaking.
I’ve loved your voice since discovering your performances. This particular rendition of one of my favorite songs is the most incredible, amazing display of your range, talent, and power. Thank you for this heartfelt, expressive moment of sheer beauty.
please mister. Your lip sync to your recording is getting worse and worse :(
Regards big fan
You know Pentatonix version of this was my favorite but you have just topped it.
Christ be glorified. Hallelujah.
The man with the silver tongue knocks it out of the ballpark once again. That was beautiful. Thanks for the gift cousin. ❤
My dude, my guy, my bro sorrry I've been slacking on watching. This is such a beautiful cover, you did amazing, the background is cozy...will always love the facial expressions of how much you get into it 🍻🍻🍻
Lyrics: Well I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
Well it goes like this
The fourth, the fifth, the minor fall and the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Well your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew ya
She tied you to her kitchen chair
And she broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
But baby I've been here before
I've seen this room and I've walked this floor
You know, I used to live alone before I knew ya
And I've seen your flag on the marble arch
And love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Well there was a time when you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show that to me do ya
But remember when I moved in you
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Maybe there's a God above
But all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya
And it's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Wow, awesome in the old meaning of the word. the range of your voice is so impressive, thank you for sharing this beautiful cover with the world.
Absolutely gorgeous and, not a complaint, but it's a deeply odd experience to hear this song sung with an Irish accent
Not even a minute in yet and it’s already passed me expectations. Love ya, Colm - stay handsome, mate.
Your voice is just so stunning. Every single time, I get tingles. So much emotion.
Can I subscribe a 2nd time to you mate? Please say I can xD
This is the 3rd best cover of this song I've ever heard.
Leonard Cohen's original is the absolute best version.
But for cover versions Nana Mouskouri's is 2nd best. Sydney Watson's cover is 1st best.
But this was incredible still! I just generally tend to prefer softer feminine voices for certain songs.
I have my girly girl, my Smokey cat right beside me right now; She's loved a long life, but tomorrow, Jan 8, 2024, she has to pass on and go home. We loved listening to music together, thank you for this
who needs therapy when you can have this.
Your voice is pure perfection. My dear, please don’t ever stop singing. NEVER! ❤️
leeeeesgooooo i was waiting for this a looooot. Much love from Ukraine man, your songs and covers are incredible and saves me in very bad times
Have you been saving this up until you weren't absolutely terrified to post it?
It's so easy to get wrong. But this is you, and that is what it needs to be. Well done.
Incredible work as always colm
Best version ever!
Прекрасно, волшебно,чудесно!
Мир Божји, Христ се роди!
Срећан Божић!
This is incredible, well done. The tone and the range are amazing and add so much to this song.
Alright who’s cutting onions…..best cover ever
I am very biased towards to OG version of Hallelujah - but I'll tolerate this one, bc it's so well done.
One of the best baratone voices I have ever heard. Thank you!
Good. But not Jeff Buckley. :)
CHILLS 😎 such beauty!!! I just can't get enough of colms voice. The flow of his voice with his music choice is like ship to a stranded person. I hope to hear many more additive songs for years to come.
Very deep sound at the start, in-between and at the end. I must say very interesting and Great 🤔
Extraordinary Brother🌹 Absolutely Excellent & Super Beautiful!! ALL GLORY TO GOD ALWAYS AND FOREVER🕊️
The best cover of this song, seriously. Great job.🔥👍
This makes me unreasonably happy. Thank you so much for doing this Colm.
Great job ! Not easy to perform this song after all existing versions and covers. But you did it perfectly, feelings are here !
Aye Cap'n.... that's indescribably beautiful 🫶
I even forgot to breathe while listening...Beautiful!
I generally do not comment. Also mostly I do not like Hallelujah covers since they are not genuine. However your cover is one of the rare and beautiful ones, surprising the listener with different registers and giving the genuine feelings. Wanted to say great job sir!
WOW!!! This has to be one of the best versions of this song I have heard...you blew me away!!! 👏👏👏👏👏
I have always loved this song, but I feel like I've never really understood it until now. Thank you for an amazing piece of music!
Wow! Colm this is most likely my favorite of your songs so far. ❤❤
This has always been one of my favorite songs. Thank you for making such a lovely cover of it!
This song was a huge part of my childhood, I remember watching my parents dance in the kitchen to Leonard Cohen, it's some of my happiest memories. You did a wonderful cover. Absolutely bravo Colm :)
I've heard a few covers of this song, and this is one of the best Ive heard, amazing work man!
As always, this is an unbeliveably awesome cover. It's a pleasure and a privilege to hear you sing, bloody good job as always
Oh my, absolutely love your voice!!! Beautiful and haunting song, one of my favorites, and your cover is gorgeous!!! Thank you Colm, from the bottom of my heart. 😍💚💚
So heartfelt and filled to the brim with emotion; well done, absolutely well done.👏
Might be one of the best covers of the song out there, and there are a lot of covers of this song. Bravo sir, truly.
Woow 🔥😍 my expectations where pretty high, but man... you did it 👌
This is a comment on the song's history and not on your rendition of it.
Some people might not realize that the variations of this song all come from Leonard Cohen, and that he mixed and matched lyrics over time. I don't think I've ever encountered lyrics that weren't his. However, my favorite variation of the lyrics by far is the original commercial release version of the song.
That version doesn't really come across as being about love quite so much as being about being a flawed man with a history of mistakes finding the strength to stand in the face of shame. Whether you want to lean into the heavily Christian connotations of the lyrics or not, I find that version of the lyrics to be powerfully moving. It also ends on a hopeful note rather than dwelling on "a cold" and "broken" hallelujah.
But, well, Cohen said it himself.
"There's a blaze of light in every word. It doesn't matter which you heard: the holy or the broken hallelujah."
Nice cover, but I’ll always have Jeff’s version first and foremost; he was a colleague and my friend.
Well, I heard there was a secret chord
That David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
Well it goes like this:
The fourth, the fifth, the minor fall and the major lift

You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew ya

She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah...
Well, baby, I've been here before
I've seen this room and I've walked this floor (you know)
I used to live alone before I knew ya
And I've seen your flag on the marble arch
And love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah...
Well, there was a time when you let me know

The only other version that can compete with Cohen's hallelujah is the one from Chester Bennington. Well done Mr McGuiness. This is outstanding!
I came to your channel earlier looking for this for some reason, glad its here🎉❤ happy New year
No exaggeration... This is my favorite version. I used to love Rufus wainwright's rendition but... I've got a new favorite now.
I was listening to the original just yesterday and wondering if you/chase /Johnathan Young had done a cover of it yet! Amazing coincidence
If you're still taking suggestions how about "Nearer my God to thee"? Perhaps for the Anniversary of Titanic coming in April.
Wow... Colm. Your vocal range is impressive, you can go pretty high, and also very low. Do you have any tips for how to expand range to hit certain notes? (I'm more specifically interested in figuring out whether I can reach bass notes. Not really sure if it's physically possible for me since I'm a lady, but I love the way bass singing sounds and would like to see if I can replicate it :) I don't know my range or anything because I'm honestly really shy about singing in front of people, but alone, I like singing to myself. My guess would be alto, since my mom is one, and my voice is deeper like hers. Sorry for long ramble-y message)
What a wide range, and after you collaborated on the same song with Caleb Hyles, Jonathan Young, and more!
I've always thought that Cohen was probably one of the greatest lyricists of the 20th century. Curiously, even though I've heard many people praise Buckley's cover, I've never listened to it. Cohen is still my preference.
one of my favorite songs, this cover is so beautifully done. also your range is very impressive.
I would LOVE to hear you cover "Nevermind", also by Leonard Cohen. It's the theme song for True Detective season 2
This better be added to the new Shrek movie
Colm I know you don’t often take requests but I feel like you would sound amazing singing/doing a cover of Marty Robbins the masters call
This made me cry! Brought back all my feelings of loss after my husband died. ❤ Beautiful!
cant be said enough, the vocal range you have is astounding
such an Angelic voice as always, well done sir.
This was honestly so beautiful. I listen to the version you did with Caleb, Thomas, Jonathan and Dan a few years ago. It’s lovely to hear you do the whole song. Thank you for this ☺️🩵
1 🎉 love your videos and voice
Really bugs me that this guy isnt more widly recognized. Consistently performing to the level of david draiman covering sound of silence.
Fantastic. I've heard other stuff by you but now I'm subscribing.
