BREAKING! Panasonic Is Due To Build Tesla 4680 Batteries With 5-Times Power

  • According to a Japanese media report, Panasonic wants to start series production of the new 4680 cells for Tesla in the course of 2023. For this purpose, Panasonic is expanding its plant in the Japanese prefecture of Wakayama and integrating new systems for the mass production of these new cells.
    As the Japanese business newspaper "Nikkei" reports, Panasonic expects an accelerated conversion to electric vehicles due to the longer range of vehicles with 4680 batteries and has therefore decided to invest heavily in battery development.
    In autumn 2021 , Panasonic presented a prototype of its 4680 cell for Tesla and announced that it would start test production in Japan in March 2022. At that time, however, little specific data was given about the Panasonic cell. Even now, “Nikkei” remains rather vague and speaks of a range that is around 20 percent higher. In addition, the 4680 cells are said to cost between ten and 20 percent less in terms of capacity.
    In September 2020 , Tesla presented the significantly larger and more powerful battery cell called 4680. At Tesla, the designation traditionally refers to the dimensions: the diameter of the round cell is 46 millimeters and the cell is 80 millimeters long. The new cells should not only improve the range and performance of the electric cars, but also be cheaper per kilowatt hour and also significantly reduce the investment costs in their production. The 4680 cell is five times the size of the NCA battery cell currently used by Tesla.

    So do we know if this is the Tabless Tesla design to their Patent or their own version? Are they using the dry film electrode coating technology purchased from Maxwell Technologies? Presumably as partners they can make them under license. Oh how the tables have turned!

    I'm definitely in the market for a Tesla either a 3 or a Y. I am waiting to see if the 4680 battery starts production, if it comes out soon. I would prefer to get a 3 but if the 4680 comes out in a Y first I would buy the Y.

    Do not be surprised if Tesla comes out with a structural battery using no 4680 cells. It's possible to reinforce the battery to make it structural if they use cells other than the 4680. This way they can proceed with casted front and rear body production using the blade cells or 18650 cells. Until they get sufficient 4680 cells it only makes sense to utilize other cells and move forward with a structural battery pack.

    Tesla have said they will use LFP for "standard" models which implies 4680 for "premium" models such as long range and high performance. I presume most cars sold will be standard so Panasonic may logically only be used for the smaller proportion of premium models.

      LFP is chemistry ... 4680 is physical format ... separate, totally unrelated issues, so using LFP for "standard" models implies nothing of the sort.

    I thought that his was odd when I first heard about it a few months ago. After Panasonic divested themselves of Tesla stock (and made many millions) they announced plans for 4680 production, but not in Nevada. In Japan. 🤨 It is still uncertain if the Japanese 4680 batteries will just use Panasonic's 2170J chemistry, or if they will license the Maxwell technology from Tesla. Either way it will result in more batteries for Tesla! Regardless, making more batteries for Tesla (and others) will be a good move for both Panasonic and Tesla moving forward.

      Anyone can produce their version of the 4680 form factor. What goes in them is another story. They will have to build their own lines or license the tech and chemistry from Tesla witch i think they may have done with Panasonic. No one can make an exact copy of Teslas version without Patent violations. besides Those Tesla designed custom machines in the lines Tesla installing in Austin and soon berlin are not off the shelf items.

    I would wait if possible. I feel if you bought now and then try to sell it in a year it would be worth less because of the old battery production. I would think if it’s possible at all I would wait but one year could turn into five you never know that’s technology

    Aside from being tabless and a new chemistry, Is 4680 just a change is size or “form factor?”

      Yes, but with this new form factor the energy density is better. Add better chemistry and soon we will have very good batteries regarding all points.

      @@geiers6013 Also, do you know if the 4680 is making use of the “dry….um, (I can’t remember what is called), the technology they got when they bought Maxwell a while back? It’s was supposed to speed up and clean up the battery manufacturing process.

    We know legacy autos were trying to use the same part suppliers even though it costs more to slow down Tesla. Tesla is doing the same thing to them by hogging batteries snd resources. Karma. Well play Elon.
