Love listening to Sandy, he is that very, very rare individual who has literally decades of experience in engineering and the motor industry yet he is not in the least bit set in his ways. He is open to new, and better innovative ideas and technology. I actually don’t have the words in my vocabulary to be able to express my respect for this man.

Sandy found a way to do the things most engineers would love to see. Most people get beaten down by the system. I was one of those. I changed career. Not a good idea. Sandy found a way through that wall of “you can’t do it like that”.

In case anyone thinks Sandy is too enthusiastic: What you hear is the release of his many hears of pent-up frustration at OEM's and their reluctance to change. They've structured their companies over the decades to be less and less capable of change, let alone radical and rapid change. After decades of this the Tesla way of doing things is music to his ears - and eyes.

@@FrederickKoehlmann Yup. That's another Sandy rant. An accurate rant made by him and others. Of course the poster boy for this is the tragic decline of Boeing but it applies to OEMs and too many other other industries.

And how Daimler Benz been building vehicles for about 110 years, of the highest quality, and numerous industry changing innovations. Stop with the platitudes, who comes out of Ford, which has the highest recall for defects in the world. If Sandi had a resume like used to work at VW, or Benz, Audi, BMW, Porsche, even TOYota, he would have some credible resume. Mr. more plastic snaps, make it cheaper, not better. That's called route to failures. Benz also has a legal level 3 Tesla doesn't. Even that is useless and a gimmick, even by Benz standards, useless. But Benz is way ahead of Teste in automation. Benz is also the biggest truck maker in the world. Teste made 140 trucks, ? ooops

Love your quote: those that say no are promoted. Something I see in many places. Few people have the guts to say yes, we can make it work, and start thinking outside the box and take the risks. There is always a management side in this: if the suits think is it a misfeature to fail, you are working at a place where "no" is the right answer. But if the suits want to go push the envelope, that is where you are "free" to say "yes". Boils down to corporate culture, and runnig the company under fear of change, or dare to change.

Any serious engineer is admiring efficient simplification such as only Tesla can today with its vertical integration. The others just put Lego together! But also a car that makes in Europe a 100 km/60 miles on 2 litres equivalent and has the power and range of M3 and MY you fulfilled a wish Elon was very modest. This is what liars and diesel cheating cartel of the 5 in Germany promised 40 years ago and brought a lousy poor men’s Lupo Diesel consuming however 3,5 Litres with loud noise. With a lot of energy you can move many things but with a tenth of petrol or diesel driven cars of similar performance the electric makes about the same distance even and consumes less energy what can save the planet and not only CO2 is what is important but become FREE from fossile fuels and independent from dangerous sources working against our interests, e.g. as state trust shareholders in ICE automotive not interested in EV - see from were all the fake news and analysts remarks are coming working against Tesla and also the SYNERGY person that is only Elon Musk. Nobody should bet against him for hidden agenda and greedy reason!

He gave credit where credit was due, but he also call them out on some questionable manufacturing techniques. But it’s fun to see Sandy over the years appreciate Teslas advancements. the Whole motor is Bathed in Chilled OIL.
BTW - motors are ZERO maintenance, one oil change every 25+ YEARS.
each motor has DUAL oil Filters . Replace every 10+ years.

I spent most of my career in the. auto biz, most of that at Ford in Vehicle Engineering. It is REALLY HARD to make changes, to get people to try new things... and over time, I saw more and more restrictions regarding "what is possible". And less engineering.... but more and more emphasis on "processes" (how we have to do things) and more and more stupid studies to placate idle management ideas. Jeez! I was so happy to retire early!

The biggest problem is engineers still don't control engineering companies. The enthusiasm from a talk by sandy is quashed when people go back to work and the MBAs say no to every improvement. America has a problem with CEOs and board members owning way too much stock that is simply handed to them for free for being an employee. These people get so much stock, they act like small ownership groups working for themselves, not for the company or shareholders. We must ban stock ownership by board members and executives.
Stock ownership by execs and board members is exactly what ruined boeing. The board member Calhoun immediately started cutting again in 2020 when he made himself ceo and boeing got even less safe. He openly violated the agreements the company agreed to in order to avoid jail time for execs for the MAX. Naturally, execs are still funneling money and cutting corners because they keep getting richer and no one gets any jail time. Most MBA led companies operate like FTX.

I think from an engineering point of view electric drivetrains are proven to be so superior. Like a diesel electric train. Just have to catch up with the battery tech.
