Been listening to him for years and only came across this performance recently. I don't know of any other western musician to have used the Harmonium, nor can I think of a song that better fits the natural melancholy of this instrument. What a genius Beck is.
The change of scale of the haromonium at 2.54 is exactly what some excellent harmonium melodies are. Amazing that he caught that vibe, great rendition, and at 4.06 he modulates his tone to perfection of the mournful Vaishnav ballads from Bengal.
Beck has always been special. To me his is the male version of Björk. They do their own thing and if people like it, cool! Honest integrity unlike so many others,
I was privileged to witness Beck play this deeply moving song solo on his knees with the harmonium in Melbourne @ the Palais in 2003 during the Sea Change tour which was a fitting finale to an epic emotional concert that ebbed and flowed from The Golden Age to Erotic City and everything inbetween.
Treated you like a rusty blade A throwaway from an open grave Cut you loose from a chain gang And let you go And on the day you said it's true Some love holds, some gets used Tried to tell you I never knew It could be so sweet Who could ever be so cruel, Blame the devil for the things you do It's such a selfish way to lose The way you lose these wasted blues These wasted blues Tell me that it's nobody's fault Nobody's fault But my own That it's nobody's fault Nobody's fault But my own When the moon is a counterfeit Better find the one that fits Better find the one that lights The way for you When the road is full of nails, Garbage pails and darkened jails And their tongues Are full of heartless tales That drain on you Who would ever notice you You fade into a shaded room It's such a selfish lose The way you lose these wasted blues These wasted blues Tell me that it's nobody's fault
This was an amazing show! A brilliant creative soul at the top of his game Transcendent! Mesmerizing! Saw him the same year with a full band and it was incredible! Happy birthday, Beck Hansen!
I also ran into this song by accident>>>What an excellent accident>>>Really like this one>>>WE missed out on this one as We do not listen to any music past 1989, but, for the most part music took a dump after 1989, being baby boomers, we stick to 50s>>60s>>70s>>& some 80s such as this one!!! A lot of the songs we acquire are from movies end credits, etc., This one we got at a yard sale, we purchased a box of unknown goodies which included this cd, "Beck Mutations">>>!!!! We must say "Beck" is very talented and leads me to other talented artists, i.e., Bruce Hornsby & The Range, I mean Bruce can sing, and he can also play many different instruments>>>!!!!
Most underrated artist of our time. He had a hit with Loser (which is a great tune for sure) and then people kind of forgot about him. He's a true musical revolutionary IMHO. But he's not recognized as such. He has the most incredible musical reach and an impressive understanding of musical "flavour" and tone. And the best thing about him: He never stops evolving (which some people find "scary").
“People kind of forgot about him”. Yeah, no. Beck’s album after Mellow Gold, Odelay, is his highest selling and most influential. Usually shows up on best albums of the 90’s and best albums ever lists and was voted as album of the year by many publications. He won Grammy’s. MTV played his videos and shows for Mutations and Midnite Vultures, his albums after and he won another Grammy and was the headliner for the very first Coachella Festival. No small feat. Forgotten? Nope. Sea Change was a huge album for him. It was another top 10 Billboard album, another album voted album of the year on many publications. His next album, Guero, has gone platinum and was #2 on Billboard’s 200 on the week of release. His next albums, The Information and Modern Guilt were top 5 albums on the Billboard 200 and the album after, Morning Phase, won Album of the Year at the Grammy’s. Again… Forgotten, nope.
Damn! Take a big bite of that sandwich. When the road is full of nails, Garbage pails and darkened jails And their tongues Are full of heartless tales That drain on you
The first time I heard this performance, years back, I thought (and have thought ever since) that highland bagpipes would be a fantastic accompanying instrument for this song.
In English, the proper name of the instrument is a Harmonium.. the instrument itself originates from India. My mother plays one :) Hauntingly beautiful and unique sound
Langsense, thank you for posting this version. I actually learned this to sing at akaraoke bar ,marriannes version but when I saw this video all I could say was haunting ly beautiful torement, lonelyness sorrow.and why didn't led Zeppelin cover this ?I still drink a fifth of vodka and sing and play guitar to this.brian lemasters.
brianlemasters3945 :They covered Blind Willie Johnson's song. What is wrong with you? Their version was released in 1976. Mr Hansen was six years old. What is wrong with you?😂
Experiencing the worst break up of my life currently. This made me cry. What a beautiful artist to share this feeling with the world.
This song stopped me from suicide in 2002. Hope your in a better place now❤
I admire his musical bravery. Really so much to like about his style.
Beck is unique and a very special musician. Not many of them around.
Fantastic song and a brilliant version here!
I still land here after all these years because I’m homesick for places that don’t exist anymore.
Been listening to him for years and only came across this performance recently. I don't know of any other western musician to have used the Harmonium, nor can I think of a song that better fits the natural melancholy of this instrument. What a genius Beck is.

This man's talent is beyond underrated...

This is still my favourite Beck's song.........alongside so many others.…...🐸
It is a fantastic song.
This is absolutely perfect, so much emotion in their singing
I've been lucky enough to see him live 3 times. Manchester Ritz. Manchester Apollo and Haigh Hall. All in the 90s. Yes I'm old!
Seen him twice since then. 2002 was lame, but the Lips were phenomenal. Forecastle was fantastic. Not old, but not some clueless millennial, either.
Who else but Beck could pull this off?
Wait, is he actually playing Harmonium 😍
Great musician he is
Yes, Yoda, agree we do!
Wow. This is haunting. Beck, you're immortal.
This video song killed me ten years ago, I came back for the feels.
Beck is a living legend
Yeah
Unfortunately all my friends (musicians and not) don't know him at all. I'm sorry for them.
His name is Ed.
magnificent song, and what a great version. genius.
Beck has always been special. To me his is the male version of Björk. They do their own thing and if people like it, cool! Honest integrity unlike so many others,
Pure human.
No other words needed.
Thank you Mr.
I just still love this so much.
A true artist in every regard
One of a kind, so completely unique and timeless songs, true artist in every sense
Absolutely beautiful
I just covered this song this month. I have loved this song for soooo long.
Beck voice is so beautiful
Feels like the album recorded instrumentation was a mere stepping stone to this genius performance! ❤
I saw him do this live also in San Francisco. Talk about moving...
Indeed. We saw him at Universal Amphitheater that tour.
what a song, what an album, what a performance, what a guy
Hell yes
his stuff is so good it brings tears to my eyes
Mesmerising, haunting - genius
I cry...i break down and cry, like a baby, like a baby whose lost & alone, god Beck why ya gotta do that?
cause we need it
Beautiful rendition
In my top ten favorite artist. Saw his concert in Dallas.
Who are your other ten favorites? I need more music

Amazing,.,almost lost for words. 😢
Mutations is a great album
This has always been my favorite song of his...
Man, I love this guy...an incredible talent - consistently, awesome and versatile
amazing performer, and a totally haunting, beautiful and melancholic piece
This was an amazing show! A brilliant creative soul at the top of his game Transcendent! Mesmerizing! Saw him the same year with a full band and it was incredible! Happy birthday, Beck Hansen!
Mutations is my favourite Beck album too... though it's tough to make a choice!
This song is so beautiful...
So awesome. I stumbled onto his music in '96. He is still putting out great stuff.

this performance makes my skin crawl and my eyes water~ and That's the magic of a Universal language ~
Universal indeed. That love and the sorrow and the connectiveness of us all.
love harmonium

Up there with Prince in terms of musical genius

His best song. And one that takes me back to a time in my life when I did something I shouldn't have done but I'm glad that I actually did it!
His 12 best songs are all on Sea Change but this is a close 13th.
Brother is 14th.
Gawd that was utterly amazing
So transcendent, so beautiful in the cathedral where he performs!
I love this song by the inimitable Beck Hansen. I really love this organ and the vocal key changes towards the end.
My good friend that I have never met. Awesome...
Beck and Thom Yorke should do a song together.
I don't know if you know this or not but they did cover a song together while they were touring. The song is "I'm set free" by TVU.
Yes yes yes yes yes yes
He is brave to be a one man at times he is very talented
Exquisite! Reminiscent of the simple beauty of The Great Dominions by Teardrop Explodes ♪
Great comparison!

Saw him do this rendition at Vegoose. Listening to this in the Las Vegas desert on a warm October night was perfection.
Here after Outer Range s02e05. Love Beck
Just such a fucking artist at work. Blows me away every time.
Yeah, this is cool. Great song. My favorite album by this fine artist...
Mutations?
Makes me cry...
Beautiful
The original version from Mutations is AMAZING. This version is arguably better. Talk about vulnerable. Wow.
The original is a masterpiece, love this equally though
Best performer I have ever seen. A true musician
In English, the proper name of the instrument is a Harmonium.. the instrument itself originates from India. My mother plays one :) Hauntingly beautiful and unique sound
Beautiful song
I LOVE THIS!!!!
Brilliant. One of my all time greats
Brillant!!
As a longtime fan, I congratulate this true artist on his accomplishments! This is one of my personal favorites by him, thank you for uploading!
This is depressing, but calming at the same time...
Beck played this song on his knees in Melbourne at the Palais in 2003 to close the show :)
Just beautiful....the man walks in his own world.....
he does techno equally well like folk in a Bob Dylan guise, simply a stunning artist
Love It- It´s Beautiful..
The melody is reminiscent of “This Is The End” by The Doors.
Except for the Oedipal thing
Thanks, Beck. This will make it so much easier to compose for a single guitar. I'll do my very best with the voice.
Bravo!!! Well done, sir Beck.
Very good lyrics and sound.
Congrats to Beck on "Album of the Year"!
Musical genius.
He's asking us to man up and feel the Blue. Its' all your fault, flush with bittersweet memories .
Best artist of our time...no contest.
