  • The easiest and most effective method I have used while healing my tattoos. Everyone seems to have their own way of doing things, but after talking with multiple artists, and experimenting with my own tattoos, I find that dry healing works best for me.
    I am NOT a tattoo artist or healthcare professional. I just thought I'd share some knowledge I've learned along the way.

    I've healed 3 tattoos with lotion and 3 dry healing, I've had to go back and re-do some parts of the line work on the tattoos I used lotion on. Dry healing lets the ink settle better in my experience

      everybodys skins different, i have alot of micro sweats so when i lotioned my tattoos they were too wet and had to have parts redone, my skin prefers to dry heal it'll get slight moister from showers or sweating. :D

      Most tattoos, tribal styles and alike will always needs a second hand 2-3 weeks after in order to cover those areas that shed more tint. It’s expected. And… you should never pay over for this, your tattoo artist know this 😏

    Hey Trent, great video man.
    I recently started a sleeve on my left arm. After my first appointment of getting the lines done, I was all about that lotion/ointment life. Within 2 weeks I started to break out like crazy on the arm. I just finished my second appointment to finish my forearm and I am attempting the dry heal method. I definitely feel like the lotion clogged the hell out of my pores.
    I wash 2-3 times a day with Dr. Bronners soap.
    Cheers!

    For me the “wet” healing works best just because it keeps the skin flexible and helps subdue that itching. But it all comes downs to whatever floats your boat.

    I tried dry healing before and i loved it. It's not messy and you don't have to worry about getting potential germs or bacteria on your fresh tattoos but the down side is it's so dry and tight so your movement is limited and that's very tough on areas like the ditch, elbow and wrist. I have not done dry healing ever since i discovered Husble Butter though. May get back to it and compare to wet healing with Hustle Butter for my next tattoo

    I have 7 tattoos and every single one except for a few small pieces got infected/irritated and brokeout..When I use it for my tattoo or any aftercare product it ruins my tattoo, just started realizing I was allergic and have the same issue as you.. I didn't really think to do a dry healing method but it makes perfect sense! thank you, Ill see how it works!

    Dry healing my latest on the artist recommendation. Film was on the arm firstly for just 1 hour then removed and washed with warm soapy water. Repeated the same washing process on the hour for next 3 hours, then left it, washing with soapy warm water twice daily and pat dry for the next few days. In to day 6 now, scab is peeling, a bit tender but no itching. If anything it seems to escalate the healing process. By all means, if it looks a little septic, put a small amount of antiseptic on it, otherwise seems the body will take care of it nicely.

    I have arm and leg sleeves.. I also air dry my tattoos This is what works for me. I use hibiclens in the shower which in my opinion does not dry out the skin like soap does and probably reduces itch. I also wash the tattoo with hot water letting the tattoo sting good and then switching it up to cold. Opens up the pores and helps the swelling.

  • @zdflores

    Idk if what I’m doing actually helps but I think it does. I like to take a hot shower and exfoliate the area of skin where it’s going to be tattooed and get rid of the dead skin cells as much as possible and moisturize it. that way I think the ink will be better absorbed into the skin and requires less effort when trying to pack in the ink. I also notice my tattooed skin flakes less when I started doing it

    I just got my tattoo yesterday at 11:59 today I let it air dry but I decided to put pain relief cream and my skin felt like it was burning it hurt so bad so I grabbed an ice pack and put it on my tattoo and it feels so much better Ima try air drying it and letting heal naturally instead thank you for such a good explanation.

    Yep my first tattoo I wrapped it up with plastic at night and put a very tiny amount of aquaphor on it and lost SOO much ink it wasn't even funny....and my artist swears by the dry healing method so that's exactly what im doing and the best thing is you don't lose hardly any ink doing it this way .. also I think it's easier to get a tat infected with a bunch of ointment on it. If it's dried it clots up the wounds. Just wash in antibacterial soap. From now on I am dry healing, that is unless the skin cracks and I start bleeding then I'll apply a very small amount of aquaphor.

    It really depends person per person. I use a thin amount of anti-bacterial ointment and saran wrap it only when sleeping for first 1-5 days. Been using the same ointment for 10 years (terramycin). Wash 2-3 times a day.
    For me, covering it is to prevent accidental rubbing or other dirt from settling in. Also stay indoors and eat a lot.

    IMHO there’s no 1-size fits all solution because there are Several factors to consider (I.e. artist technique, tattoo type, location of tat, even skin sensitivity). For my entire back art, the dry method was out of the question because of the level of stretching and movement so I used a mix of vit E oil and Shea butter to keep the skin conditioned After the first week. During the first week I used virgin coconut oil and healed fine. Happy healing 😊

    I ended up referring back to this video for my most recent tattoo; for my first tattoo, and my two most recent tattoos, I leave my bandages on over night, then I apply Tegaderm (which I SWEAR by) and leave keep that on for three days, followed by cleaning twice daily with either a 1:1 mixture of Dr. Broners peppermint soap, or when it's really dry dial gold soap, then let it try heal. It's defiantly worked really well for me!

    Did my first tattoo today. The studio gave me a care sheet and I had already bought tattoo cream a few days prior. I was surprised because most people I saw talk a lot about second skin/saniderm and I had even ordered some just in case but they went for a dry heal method. Soon as I got home washed it in cold water, wiped of with a paper towel and I can start applying cream by the 48hr mark.
    The only thing I wasn’t prepared for is the smell, I’m usually not sensitive to smells but it’s something I never smelled before 😅 Hoping for the best as it was excruciating in some parts, at the 1/1,5hr mark when he went over my hand and wrist bones (and quite big scars) I thought I was going to pass out! Definitely don’t go for hand tattoos/scar coverup as your first unless it’s really small, I pride myself in having a high pain tolerance but it was a 9.5/10, didn’t help that it was all single needle! But the end product is 100x better than expected.
    Already planning my next one, either a shoulder-collarbone piece or an upper arm tattoo

    I am allergic to pretty much everything! I wish it was an exaggeration. I just got a cover up on my back that pretty large. I also decided to dry heal but I have to use a fragrance free antibacterial body wash I happened to find that suave makes as I cannot use the orange dial it breaks me out. It’s definitely a dedicated venture for us that have sensitive skin and bad allergies but well worth it in the end.

    I sanidermed Friday morning switched on Friday night and kept on until Sunday night, I believe the saniderm either A had an allergic reaction and caused blisters in 3 areas on the border of the saniderm, or B that was caused because of all the discomfort from moving my arm a lot. BTW I got a full sleeve done, saniderm healed the first 3 days and I use anti bacterial hand soap to clean my tat three times a day. After washing my sleeve I then wait maybe 15-30 min before moisturizing the tat so that it can fully dry out and then I put ointment on the blisters and lubriderm on the rest of the tat. The blisters and swelling have went down

    Moist healing outside the tattoo industry would include repeat applications of greasy ointments like bacitracin, tribiotic ointment, HoneyMed, or even petroleum jelly. NOT skin lotions - they will irritate the smallest open wounds.

    Aquaphor twice a day or as need for 3-4 days after the tattoo works best for me. I also avoid lotions at all costs, like what you said that isn't for any sort of healing. Aquaphor is made for healing skin and keeps the skin from cracking. I also just like how it makes the tattoo look super fresh even when its scabbed and peeling.

    I used to use Bepanthen (nappy rash cream that is generally used for tattoo healing in the UK), with my most recent tattoo I've started to use a very small amount of Hustle Butter which seems to be healing the tattoo amazingly well. Much better than Bepanthen, I found the consistency of it soooo thick and sticky, and I'm pretty sure it's caused some of the ink to "come out" when it healed, and had to get them touched up.
    I usually let the tattoo dry up and put a small amount of Hustle Butter like 2 times a day now xD

    I have only one concern/question with the dry healing method. It seems like the first 3-4 nights your tattoo is constantly leaking blood and plasma and some ink. If you put nothing on your tattoo, your tattoo is dry and when I tried this method my tattoo stuck to my bedding? At night time say I was getting a tattoo somewhere on my arm area, how would I keep that from sticking to the bed? I know I can just wear a long sleeve fitted t shirt but I live in Hawaii and its very hot here pretty much all the time. What should I do? Should I use some product breathable tattoo costumed badage such as Sandiderm or Tegaderm, for the first 4 days or something like that then continue with the dry healing method?

  • @anders2999
    @anders2999 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Before using this technique, i had 4 tattoos which i used ointment on, then i decided to try out this method.
    The first one turned out amazing, and the 2nd one is almost done peeling and it's looking great! Still gonna need some line touch up, but it's not a big deal, since it's just 3-4 lines, i guess it's normal to get touch ups after tattoos are done peeling, since it is skin, and stuff can happen.
    These two new tattoos, are the best healed tattoos out of all of my tattoos. I don't get break outs when using ointment, but the dry healing method is the way to go for me, and i will continue doing this to my future new tattoos!
    Thank you for this video!

I’ll put a little baby lotion on if I need too, but you really don’t need it. The tattoos I’ve healed like this look way better are keep the lines looking better then the ones I’ve used aquaphor, lotion, platinum rose, or any of the other ointments.

    try a product called flexifix by opsite. it's a clear, breathable, antibacterial film that you place over your tattoo with an inch or so around the tattoo itself, which you can leave on for up to 3 days. it'll keep the bacteria out and when you take it off after a few days, your tattoo is basically healed. recommended to me by josh sutterby. perfect for tattoos in awkward places, also creates a barrier between the wound and your clothes. i've never used anything better!

    I know this is a 3 year old video, but I agree with a lot of what you say. I have a lot of tattoos and have tried all different stuff. The lotion or aquaphor stuff have made some tattoos almost infected. It clogs pores and doesn’t let skin heal. Most people put way too much on. With my most recent work my artist put on the sandiderm, and i left it on for like 36 hrs. Some will wash and put another one on. But I just wash with Kirks original bar soap, and let it air dry. After a few days put a very light amount of Johnson baby lotion on. It’s really been the best steps for me. For anyone that works outside or is around dirt or whatever, those sandiderm wraps are god sent.

    Do I still wash the tattoo though twice a day? Besides the showering?

  • @kishleymatunog3122
    @kishleymatunog3122 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    idk if its a good way, but usually i leave the plastic wrap from 3 hours to overnight, and then i wash the tattoo as shown in the video BUT i wash my tattoos 2 times a day for the first 3 days and then the first week with lotion and afterwards i just leave it and kind of dry healing it. sometimes i wash it if i know ive been somewhere dirty, but other than that - i just leave it and let it heals itself

    I do dry healing for as long as I can. Usually 1-2 days. I am frequently in the gym so I use aquafor on my first day back in the gym as my start for using any product. After 3 days I switch to unscented lotion for the remainder of the healing process

    I had my first ankle tattoo 3 weeks ago and I believe I use the ointment for too long, as my skin was very dry for the cold weather. I started to realize that it was not peeling, so I immediately got off the ointment go for common lotion. Was that over moisturizing bad for my tattoo?
    Now it is bumpy and cracking, only a few bits feel dry and coming off, should I stop using lotions completely? I am worried that I messed up the healing :( altough it still looks quite shiny and "new".

    • @TrentRandal
      @TrentRandal  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Iris! I doubt you messed anything up. Since you are new to getting tattooed, I'm sure you feel like you have to give it constant attention. That's the same way most of us feel on our first tattoos, which really isn't needed. My advise is to do what I said in the video. Keep it clean with liquid dial gold soap, and leave it be. If you feel like you need to use a lotion, use unscented Lubriderm sparingly. Personally, my skin seems to react best when I don't use lotion.

    Just blacked out my elbow/ditch area and am currently dry healing. I’ve been struggling with it because I don’t want the scabs to crack on my elbow. I had a tiny tear that started bleeding already. What do you do if it gets too dry and cracks when you’re dry healing?

    So my tattoos heal wicked fast, I mean a week later and my pieces are 100%. After my 1st one I was confused bc I've seen my friends take a while to heal. I must be super lucky. I get to the shiny part in 3 to 4 days. Then I keep it moisturized after for eternity lol. But yeah I must have super healing powers.
