First train in weeks - clearing the line by steam power

- For one reason and another there hasn't been any traffic here for a while, right at the start of winter when all the weeds start to grow. Here we deal with the task of clearing the vegetation on the track to make the line passable again. Unfortunately the diesel electric loco normally used for this job is out of service at the moment, and the amount of plant juice on the rails makes using one of the electric motor cars inadvisable. So we resorted to the only other mode of traction able to get the job done, steam power!

It is always an experience to stop by when the train leaves for the jungle. Battery/RC operation with diesel locomotive, electric locomotive or real steam locomotive, all of this is also my credo. Hello, good to see you are back even though the route looks challenging. I was a big fan of the transverse hacksaw blade flailing machine. A bit hazardous for line side wanderers. It's intriguing to see track points approaching but no way to see what lies down that track and into the Burmese like jungle. It's great to see that the little train finds its way home and into the clean and dry depot. At 81 it takes me back to north London and our 0 gauge railway set up in the garden Our train only had to deal with rhubarb leaves towering over it. Greetings from Lanark, Ontario, Canada.

Yeah job definitely isn't done yet, a lot of this vegetation you see on the track is weeds anyway which need to be removed for environmental reasons.
I love it.. I think it is awesome.. great stuff... I have watched several of your other videos ... great layout and lots of fun for sure.
Seems like you also need a mower but with a front-facing blade. Would look like a zombie apocalypse survival machine, but it would clear the loading gauge nicely. :D
I have another machine with vertical blades to cut the vegetation that overhangs the track, I didn't use it today though since it is a bit dangerous with the exposed blades and it can throw debris a long way, so there was risk of damaging the steam railcar.

Yes it finally lives! In a way. There's a few differences but it still owes a lot to the original design from back in the day, including the dual ratio gearbox. It took a while to build but has been pretty successful, matching the electric motor cars for performance on a pretty challenging line. I'd still like to try and build a more sophisticated 4 cylinder version closer to the original concept at some stage. Talking to you and other people back then about this thing was really where the idea of building an actual working one started.
Thats great! Tracks are made to trains roll not to carry power. One day my railroad will be dead rail too, as im in Brasil and vegetation grows really fast here.
Hey Ferrovia, Amidst vegetation and moisture, I think power transmission through tracks on this type of layout wouldn't be the way to go.
Normally this line is for electric trains and trams, which depend on the rails for return current. With this amount of vegetation on the rails though it is better not to use electric traction, since the electrical arcing seems to fuse the plant matter into a sort of coating on the wheels which is hard to clean off. Now that the vegetation has been cleared another special train will run with a water tank wagon to wash the plant juice off the rails then electric operation can resume.

The mower car uses a tool battery to power the cutting blades, and the steam railcar uses steam.

Isn't the live catenary operational anymore? You're more into operating steam locomotive since recent uploads. Your concept of setting up model catenary transmission and that too in such a simple way is amazing! I hope you'll start running those electrics again. :)
Electric is still the most common mode of operation here. The last few videos have just featured steam power because I hadn't shown much of that previously. There was an operational reason for using steam power today though, when there's this much plant juice on the rails the arcing from electric operation can fuse it into a sort of coating on the wheels which is hard to clean off, so it's better to clear it before electric operation resumes.

thinking of ways to keep the track clear, steam or dry compressed air jets, powered cleaning brushes, but probably a tiny leaf blower or vacuum would be effective at this scale?
the difficulty is the plants bigger than the train, best to use our giant human hands to handle that ^-^

Wonderful garden railroad, so glad I've found your channel! How do you control the trains? If it's analog control, how do you operate steamers?
Both the steam and electric rollingstock is controlled by 2.4ghz digital radios, it works pretty well!

A real steam engine in minature is as cool as it gets!!!! Maybe set up a weed/grass sprayer car. That would be nice!!
Just as a suggestion and idea.
Try to develop a mowing vehicle that also cuts down the vegetation on the side of the tracks.
In Germany we call something like this: keeping the profile free.
Otherwise, it's always nice when your work vehicle keeps the route running.

@@melbournesparks3828 Ah, thanks for the reply. Yes I can understand that. It would be a pity for the beautiful steam railcar if it were damaged in the process. Then all that remains is the tedious manual work to create profile freedom. In reality, this is done so that the tracks and vehicles are not damaged. It also prevents storm damage. But I think storm damage in the form of wind is less of a problem. Heavy rain is definitely more of a problem.

It uses a bit of hacksaw blade, even that wears out and needs replacement every few hours of operation.
Steam is the best anyway!

You mean the steam railcar in this video? It is gas fired using a butane/propane gas mix

Why don't you use AC power for the cantenary lines . isn't it better?
It is, and I do now! It is better in a fairly specific way though, the big advantage in this scale is that it prevents electrolytic corrosion of the rails and steel sleepers from stray current going to ground. In 1:1 scale AC is used because it is easier to transmit over long distances and easier to change the voltage of using transformers.
