Something I’ve noticed is how good the whistle sounds. On most locomotives here in the US the whistles are given too much or too little steam. Making them quiet and hard to hear most of the time
Such a beautiful locomotive and you guys did a fantastic job on it. At 11:46 you show the magnificent work the custom car builder did on the front shroud, and it got me to thinking about what he thought of the locomotive. I'm going on the assumption that being in Australia and being a car guy that he may have never seen an NYC Dreyfuss Hudson before. The photo you've included really shows the beautiful lines of the piece and how it flows so smoothly around the front of the engine. I wonder if a car guy became an Art Deco steam locomotive fan after doing that project for you.
I am blown away. This project shows what can be done if one puts one’s mind to it (and posseses some unique skills). Well done. My guess is that having worked out all the solutions as to how to build this masterpiece, you could probably build replicas in short order and some wealthy train nerds would snap them up. Thanks for this comprehensive video.
Wow! What a project to undertake and what a successful and absolutely beautiful outcome. Congratulations. As a life long New York Central fan who remembers the non-streamlined Hudsons near the end of NYC's steam era, I am just thrilled to see this accomplishment,
What a great, beautiful creation! I must say that this Father/Son combination was just fine in the wonderful effort the two of you did in this job. My appreciation and respect for you 👍
She is gorgeous! I love to see live stream trains lasting through my childhood into new builds and I'm hopeful some day I'll see a maker took the challenge to build a bullet train in grand scale! 😂
Very nice Hudson. These 1/8 scale live steam locos are just the pinnacle of model rail roading. As close to the real thing your gonna get. This Dreyfuss is incredible.
Beautiful work! You should have a person standing next to the locomotive in the thumbnail so people can appreciate the scale of this. I thought it was a much smaller "0" scale piece.
Nice job on the build! I assume you went with the piston valve design over the older slide valve? You said you have 3 tanks in your tender... how do you fill with one hatch?
1:41 slight issue with how you numbered it. you see while there was 10 J3a Dreyfuss Hudsons built, the J2 Hudsons originally from the Boston & Albany railway were given the numbers proceeding 5454. So 5455 was just a regular hudson and not a dreyfuss.
Most likely they did not know this when building it. Honestly I didn’t know that before I started gathering nyc items and most wouldn’t know that without decent research.
@@paulw.woodring7304 the Dreyfus engines were 5445-5454. The 5450-5454 were the ones with the disk drivers like on the engine in the video. Now, there was an 11th being J1e 5344 when it was converted from the Commodore Vanderbilt to a Dreyfus to pull the Mercury but had a different paint scheme. I’d say the safe numbers would be 5450-5454 or 5344 and say it was painted for the Century.
Thanks Cody . if you head over to the New York Central Historical Society's website. they have the drawings for this locomotive as well as several others www.nycshs.net/Digital-Engineering-Drawing-Flash-Drives_c_17.html
ROGER GOLDMANN'S very early "teens - twenties" Pilliod-Baker valve gear hanger I see. I have that going on to my now well under construction NYO&W Y Class (blt. 1923) #405 in Otto Kuhler's "Mountaineer" maroon, orange and black. The train's one and only original tail-sign, with the actual maroon and orange paint hues is in my collection. ---For ths Dreyfus Hudson to LOOK truly accurate, you really should have found (or made) the later style Baker hanger as C.A. Hoffmann offered decades ago. I have that correct style of hanger on my 1-1/2" scale N.Y.C. J3a as found in Joe Nelsons "So You Want To Build A Live Steamer" depicted in the chapter on valve gear.

Well done guys 7 yrs and finished off well you both should be proud.
I’ve been an New York Central enthusiast for the longest time and I’ve got to say that this is absolutely stunning!
Well done. Am a New York Central enthusiast living along the NYC right of way……this is a stunningly well done project. God bless

I was planning on getting an HO version of this engine so I can have a Dreyfuss Hudson too.
Awesome model ❤
Wow! That's spectacular!
What a gorgeous piece. Wonderful job!
Astonishing, it must be beyond a price. Congratulations!
Very impressive locomotive at that scale.
I love this. Look forward to seeing more and watching it ride
I shared this to my local live steamers on Long Island, NY 😊

That is one beautiful looking locomotive.
I Love Hudsons.

Very impressive
Wow i loved .... New York central Hudson is my favorite train make more vídeos about It .... 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Beautifully done! Thank you for sharing your masterpiece with us. Your video is as well done as your locomotive. Bravo!
Absolutely beautiful!
Magnificent!!!!
To the untrained eye (me), that is close enough to the prototype. Impressive and beautiful work!
My OCD is sitting here wanting to adjust placement of the eccentric rod and crank so it turns like the real thing. Not like soo line 1003
Thats a beautiful build! Wagga Wagga? Fun track to drive on, spirals a good climb!
Beautiful work! You should have a person standing next to the locomotive in the thumbnail so people can appreciate the scale of this. I thought it was a much smaller "0" scale piece.
Fenomenal! Congrats
You should be proud, that thing is an absolute beauty
WOW this in wonderful, congratulations on a very nice engine.
Stunning!! ❤
Resurrection of Extinct Locomotive species albeit on a smaller scale. ;)
Fabulous! Well done
Brilliant!
Fantastic!
Nice job on the build! I assume you went with the piston valve design over the older slide valve? You said you have 3 tanks in your tender... how do you fill with one hatch?
Yes it the pistion valve, the three tanks are interconnected with each other at the bottom
Now all they need to do is make a full scale replica
Beautiful excellent work keeps at it.What is your next project?
Have to build the locomotive some carriages next

Most likely they did not know this when building it. Honestly I didn’t know that before I started gathering nyc items and most wouldn’t know that without decent research.
So would changing it to 5456 fix the issue? Should be easy enough to fix with vinyl numbers.

Sweet!
Nice video, Like!
WOW
blondihacks next project hopefully?
while I appreciated the weight being given in stone, it would have been very useful to have the length provided in furlongs.
Waiting for Kato or broadway limited to make it in N scale but they can’t figure it out
I be flabbergasted!
DAYUM
NOTHING TO COMPARE !
Nice job...but please leave thus inch feet bla bla... The world use metric system, except on country;)
This vehicle used imperial so why would they change it just for you?
The technology is awesome, but seeing grown men riding on them is cringeworthy and reminds me of clown cars.
looks brilliant my good man
The rear wheel
