I'm a 79 year old retiree and recently bought my first guitar. I always wanted to learn how to play one but felt hampered because of having rather short fingers, my middle finger on either hand is right 3 and 7/8 inches in length, I was told by the widow of a farmer class mate who run a music store for years that it shouldn't make any difference so after all these years I bought my 1st guitar. I started watching different y-tube videos and found that Lauren Bateman seems the best for beginners. My tastes learn towards older country and Southern Gospel style of music.
@@LaurenBateman 3 7/8 inches? You must be measuring from the middle of the knuckle. Mine is 3 3/4 and it's taking work but I think I can do a full C one of these days.
I'm a 60 year old newcomer to guitar (albeit with a lifetime of air guitar experience following a brief, unsuccessful dalliance with learning guitar when I was about 10 years old). I recently bought a battered Jeff Beck Les Paul lookalike because it looked cool as an objet d'art, but then found myself watching YT videos, getting more and more drawn to trying to learn again. After a fortnight or so of various tutorials (and guitar repair videos, as the old Les Paul is falling apart...), I've stumbled across this channel, and this is the first time the best playing position has been clearly explained - particularly with that note regarding making things comfortable for the more mature player. THANK YOU Lauren! I'll be following your tutorials and crash course from here onwards.
Hi Butterfly! I just turned 65 in June on Marilyn Monroe's birthday (like every year, weird huh? lol) In the 60s when I was 8 or 9 my dad bought me an acoustic guitar, but I couldn't tune it. As you know, tuners are super easy to get and use nowadays. I sure wish I had THAT guitar, I do have 4 hangin' on the wall, but that first one... Thanks to TH-cam and teachers like Lauren, we now have the chance to see our dreams come true! I wish you good luck and happy holidays!
Thank you Lauren, I think I was able to get those first two cords. I'm 67 and must say a tear formed when I heard myself doing it, And one of my favorite songs I almost could not believe it was me doing it... I have always wanted to learn guitar but something has always got in the way. Thank you again.

Hi Lauren, I just found you and enjoyed your techniques for teaching the guitar. I will look for the free for beginners, even though I had taken some guitar lessons years ago but, just got a few songs and still struggle to move my fingers faster.

Hi Lauren, I just discovered your channel. There are lots of videos and playlists on here. I am a complete beginner and just bought my first guitar. Where would you recommend a beginner start in your vast video library? Thanks for posting all these videos.😊
Hi Lauren! No laughing please, but how do you get guitar picks out from inside the acoustic guitar body? I finally got mine out by rolling a piece of tape into a ring with the sticky side out, and sticking it onto the end of a pencil. I then could put the end of the pencil with tape on it into the sound hole, stick it onto the picks and pull them out. Whew!
Thanks for watching! That is a good method and a lot of students are doing that. One way is to shake your guitar until the pick is positioned at the middle of the sound hole. Then you flip your guitar as fast as you can and the pick will eventually drop at the sound hole. As we say, practice make progress.
Thank you so much, I just love doing my lessons with you everything explained and you give time to absorb the lessons, by the way I’m 69 and enjoying the thrill
"Many of them have Arthritis and other things" LOL, sounds like me fersure. I've had somewhere around 20 injuries which include 14 fractures, a TBI or two, an injury to my heart helped out a bit by a cardiac pacemaker and other super cool things! I've also had 11 (Eleven) surgeries and counting! The fractures are all skull fractures, spinal fractures, joint fractures and long-bone spiral fractures. Zero finger or toe fractures, 'cause those are for Newbies! Furthermore, I do NOT have Fat-Fingers. LOL I DO have quite a few disabilities, but I do practice my digital drums using just my arms ( a few times a month, which is way up from a few times a year) I have a really hard time with my guitars due to my left hand, but I take one down when my body lets me, and I noodle for a while when I'm feeling creative. I practice my vocals several times a week, especially when I'm writing. I've been writing lyrics for over 40 years, ever since I woke up from my coma. Sounds like BS? I would think so too but I have the scars and x-rays to prove it. I found you this evening and I'm subbin' just as soon as this comment is finished. I loved your Crafter guitar that much, I managed to find one at 400 uk pounds which i bought. . The bottom E string rang a little but I managed to fix it. What a buy !!!
For using the tuner .. tell everyone to be on the chromatic (C) mode. I know YOU know this, but if beginners have a multi-purpose tuner they might have a problem. If they are in the Guitar mode (usually G on the tuner) you have to be close to the note to start. Best to start on the chromatic (C) mode. When I took my first guitar lesson in 1960, I was hungry to learn. I am now 75 years old, and my very first electric guitar is in my living room. I think I was 12 years old when I bought it. It is a Silvertone. I bought it 2nd handed, for $35.00. It came with a hard case, that was also an amplifier. I still have that too. I played at so many high school events and Junior Seniors I can not remember them all. I do have old photos, including one made in 1964 that included my brother Jack performing with us, and it was 'his' Junior Senior. I am playing my Silvertone in the photo. Later, when my brother was in college, our band performed for his fraternity. When I went off to college, I took my Silvertone with me. I performed in 7 southeastern states while I was in college. Years later, after I was married, my wife called out my name, while I was getting ready for work. "Come look what is on tv", she told me. I came to the balcony and looked down, just in time to see a Silvertone, exactly like mine on tv. It was the Today Show, and someone was featuring items they had found that had greatly increased in their original price. Of all things to feature, there was a duplicate of my Silvertone ! The guy had bought it out of a Pawn Shop for $ 600.00 ! That is NOT why I kept mine. I kept mine for all the wonderful memories and happiness it had given me ! I have other guitars, and in my latter years I played a 1966 Fender Mustang, Telecaster, and a Stratocaster.

@brianr3049 I've had a few friends that played bass, I can't recall ever seeing them play a chord of any kind. So I'm not entirely certain, but it seems to have an entirely diffrent set of techniques for the most part. You would probably do better finding a teacher or content creator that is versed with bass guitar.
@@LaurenBateman Yeah. If I started learning now, prolly by the time I’m 75 I still wouldn’t play like him. I’m a one on one kinda guy. Don’t think your online courses would do much for me.

Thanks for watching!
I got a 4 string guitar can you learn the same way if it was a 6 string
🤔🤔🤔 is it a uke?
@@LaurenBateman nope its a electric guitar
@brianr3049 is it a bass guitar?
@@BushcraftSavage yes
@brianr3049 I've had a few friends that played bass, I can't recall ever seeing them play a chord of any kind. So I'm not entirely certain, but it seems to have an entirely diffrent set of techniques for the most part. You would probably do better finding a teacher or content creator that is versed with bass guitar.

Io a volte ci trovo gusto e più ispirazione (!) a suonare (o quasi! 😄) stravaccata sul letto o sulla poltrona (anche un divano 👍!).... 😁
WAW,LOVE THIS LESSON YES!❤
LIKE,LIKE,...😂❤LOVE YOU TEACHER😊
Lauren, I wanna play like SRV, can you help me?
SRV is amazing. That would be more the blues realm. I would check out my blues 101 course. www.laurenbatemanguitar.com/blues
@@LaurenBateman Yeah. If I started learning now, prolly by the time I’m 75 I still wouldn’t play like him. I’m a one on one kinda guy. Don’t think your online courses would do much for me.
Thanks for sharing how to play 2 songs fast in 30 minutes time. What to do with your guitar before you start playing advice is useful for all beginner guitarists.
Thanks for watching! we'll take note of that! Thank you!
