Florida Keys Kayak Fishing - An Evening On The Reef (How to Keys Reef Fishing)

  • How to catch Yellow Tail Snapper. I needed to test my plastic welding repair on my kayak so I made the six mile run out to the edge of the reef. I didn't sink. This is your basic Keys Yellow Tail Snapper fishing trip that is probably the most common type of fishing in the Keys. This should be helpful for understanding the basics of fishing the reef.

    That cast net throw at ten minutes was something else. It is amazing you can throw that far from a kayak without being able to really swing the net behind you. Hats off to you my friend.

      Thanks Pat. I'm a live bait guy so most of my trips start out with the cast net. I get invited on a lot of boats because of my net throwing abilities.

    Another great video. Love that Palomar knot!!! When you are half senile like me and only get down there every 2-3 years, remembering how to tie that and the uni to uni covers 95% of your fishing needs. Don't believe I've ever had a Palomar knot fail on me.

    • @KeyWestKayakFishing
      @KeyWestKayakFishing  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yea, when I was out commercial fishing yellow tailing with some friends, she got mad at me because I was not de-hooking the gut caught fish and just cutting the line and then taking too long to re-tie. She showed me that knot, and I was sold on it;s simplicity. Same with the Uni knot. Basic, but it is strong and you really can't mess it up.

    It amazes me that you can keep my attention for forty-there minutes. You eat what you catch. When you throw back, is it because your freezer is full?
    That was an epic camera angle at about thirty-eight minutes. The composition and the slight bit of fish-eye effect was perfect. Done really well.
    Thank you for explaining technique, detailing bait, hooks and various considerations to catch more fish. You do a fine job. I love how you make the most of your sit on top kayak. You could just as well be on a fifty-three foot HydraSports Custom with the heart you put into it.

    That first grouper was not a red grouper but a red hind. Red grouper are not spotted and their dorsal spines dont protrude at all, giving the appearance of a spineless dorsal fin. The "parrotfish" was also some sort of wrasse, likely a puddingwife

    • @KeyWestKayakFishing
      @KeyWestKayakFishing  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll have to take a look at the hrz settings that I have it set to. I tweeked it a little bit but not to far off the standard specs. I really only use it to find good spots on the reef 30-100 ft and the location of the wrecks 300-400ft.

  • @zachtilly8675
    @zachtilly8675 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    You should switch to something else besides Menhaden, their numbers are dropping significantly in the Chesapeake bay, and they are the No. 1 Food source for stripe bass, etc. (That's where the majority of Menhaden come from)

    • @KeyWestKayakFishing
      @KeyWestKayakFishing  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think they make chum blocks in anything but Menhaden. You can get blocks of whole Sardines or Threadfins, but usually I would use those to chop up and make yellowtail slop. I don't think there is actually that much used for block chum as it really is a technique not often used in many places.

    What's the range on your kayak using that little Suzuki outboard? Is it marine rated, or do you flush it after each use?

    • @KeyWestKayakFishing
      @KeyWestKayakFishing  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I get 10 miles per liter. The motor holds one liter and I carry a spare tank that is one gallon. Even on a full troll day I haven't used that much gas. It is saltwater rated. It is a 2010 and has spent most of its life as a tender/dinghy motor. I give it a flushing about once a week or so.

    with your running sinker to the hook why dont you put a rubber bead on your line in between the hook and sinker just to protect the knot? i find that having a running sinker damages the knots so the bead protects it.

    • @KeyWestKayakFishing
      @KeyWestKayakFishing  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I re-tie after almost any good fish. There is not much wear that way. Any knicks in the leader gets re-tied.

    • @comeatmebro3229
      @comeatmebro3229 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      fair enough, i re-tie after every few casts here (mainly beach fishing we have alot of big crabs destroy our lines) but i still find the bead protects the knot, its not so much for when the line gets scuffed but when fighting a fish a fish, when the line is tight that sinker can move quite quickly up and down the line and when it impacts on the knot it has a chance of scuffing and cutting it, ive lost a few fish that way (sharks and mulloway, these often can take over 30 minutes to catch from the beach so that might make a difference) but since using the bead i haven't lost any fish to the knot being damaged.

  • @brianbranigan6051

    Curious about your knocker rig; 2 oz egg to hook verses weight, bead, swivel, 6' leader then hook. Could you compare these 2 set-up for me?

    • @KeyWestKayakFishing
      @KeyWestKayakFishing  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Knocker rig has the weight butted right at the hook (no swivel). It's purpose is to let you drop the weight straight down in the water column, and then be able to give it slack to sit away from the weight. With the egg sinker, the fish won't feel the weight and you can directly feel the bite. The other rig with a swivel is when you want a separation between the weight and the hook/bait so you don't spook the fish on the way to the bottom or once on the bottom. I will generally use the knocker rig when there are a lot of risks of snags so I can determine how much slack to give and to drop that bait straight down so it won't get entangled in something. The texas style rig I use when I am going to suspend the weight off the bottom and have the bait drifting back in the current or free swimming around. Hope that explains it.

      It's the last generation of Lowrance fish finder. It is the Elite V Chirp. There is newer technology out now so not even sure you can buy the same model. Might as well get the newest model that is available. Depending on the Hobie, you might already have themounts built into the kayak for the transducer. Mine is just a well I made out of a piece of closed cell foam, and I put water into the well. You should check to see if they have a specific model built for your kayak. It makes things very easy.

      Not much good for anything. They are a vile fish. They stink literally. Total nuisance as they will suck up all your chum. As soon as they show up, I move.

    hi, how do you rate the single pontoon compare to double,s

    • @KeyWestKayakFishing
      @KeyWestKayakFishing  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally stable and allows for entry and fish landing on the one side. Less stuff to carry and assemble/disassemble as well.

      I just use the gopro studio from their site. I don't do any of the special effects stuff so it works just fine for me.

      I hit some bridges today. Lots of BIG snappers around. I wasn't prepared for those guys. I should have the video about it up tomorrow. I'm going to work my way up the Keys in a few different videos. A good option for windy days.

      Yea, I think I clarified that in the comments. It was a bit of an oddball catch for me. First one I have seen down here.

      Yea, it just did not have the will to live. That is why they changed the regs so that you no longer have to keep a air bladder deflator. They found that it just killed them. This is still a better way than clipping their air bladder. Something that takes them back down and releases is still the best though.

    27: 40 thats the exact reason i don't use penn reels the gears are crap, just stick to daiwa or shimano.

    • @KeyWestKayakFishing
      @KeyWestKayakFishing  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pot metal gears are not by definition heavy duty. I buy main gears and worm gears two at a time. Just a little corrosion gums them up and they strip. I'll hold on to them through this season and then maybe go back to Shimano.

      Try a spheros, on amazon shimano spheros Japan import you pay about 135 +15 shiping save 50 bucks and the best reel for the price, the saragosa is good but not really worth the extra buck to me.
