    I grew up in SF and then moved away in high school, but returned to the bay area for work after finishing school. It's crazy how so many professionals are living like back in the college days in SF because it's so expensive. SF is a wonderful city with lots to do, but the cost of living is absurd. But of course, for those who want that experience, it makes sense to live like this in the time being. I'm at an age where I just can't share space w/ anyone. So even though my rent is considerably high, at least I have the studio all to myself in a very nice neighborhood. I do miss SF though.

    My biggest advice to people moving to SF (I moved and have been here 3 months) is to get an apartment that you are happy with... I nabbed a 300 sq ft apartment in a luxury Rincon tower... it's okay but I wish I would have gotten a slightly bigger place and since I'm paying alot I wish I would have went with a tower that has a gym and an in unit washer/dryer. Those things to me are a deal breaker and make an apartment feel like home. 3 grand a month should get you what you want but in SF there are sacrifices with every place.

    Living with room-mates is a way of life in San Francisco. Doesn't matter if you're in college or out in the world, due to the cost of living. I lived in San Francisco 1986-2000. Had 2 room-mates even after I got married & had a baby (we shared a large flat). I enjoyed having the extended family feel. We all got along. We paid $2000 for a 3 bedroom / 2 bath apartment, which now probably goes for $5K. Ouch!

  • @ChristianMilan
    @ChristianMilan 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    ‘Subletting’ can be tricky (if that is what you are doing). Written lease is preferred- San Francisco is rent controlled so check your lease terms and make sure your rent would stay the same if the other two roommates were to move out. Also check your security deposit terms if you paid them and if you are NOT responsible for any damage that the dog did or will do.

      Since Katherine is not the original occupant of this apartment and one of her roommates is the original occupant, the landlord would have given Katherine a "6.14 notice" within 60 days after she moved in. As long as the original occupant remains in the apartment, the unit is under rent control with the allowable annual rent increase as outlined in sfrb.org/sites/default/files/Document/Form/571%20Allowable%20Annual%20Increases%2020-21%20EN.pdf However when the last original occupant vacates the unit, the landlord is entitled to apply an unlimited rent increase under the Costa-Hawkins Rental Housing Act. sfrb.org/topic-no-153-rent-increases-under-section-614-and-costa-hawkins If she decides to stay in the unit, she must sign a new lease and become the new original occupant at the newly increased rent.
      The landlord is required to pay the tenants interest on the security deposit every year on the annual due date. sfrb.org/sites/default/files/Document/Form/572%20Security%20Deposit%20Interest%20Rates%2019-20%20EN%204.4.19.pdf The landlord is also entitled to collect a rent board fee from the tenants every year. sfrb.org/sites/default/files/Document/Form/573%20Rent%20Board%20Fee%20History%2019-20%20EN.pdf

    What most of you don't get is that the $1,700 a month rent is not for the entire apartment. When she gives us the rent for each, that is just for the one bedroom she would live in. The average one bedroom in San Francisco rents for around $3,500 a month.

    Living in SF and finding a place can be one of the most stressful expensive situations ever! I lived with roommates for 7 years, lived in 3 different apartments and it was the worst! Finding people whith whom you can comfortably live, plus finding a place in a cool nice area with a nice big room its extremely challenging. After my last living situation with roommates I had enough! The room was very big and beautiful, half block away for GGP, a block away from stores, restaurants, banks, bars etc...but the living situation was horrible. My ex roommate was the worst!! After 2 years of living there I couldn't take it anymore so I finally decided to get my own place. Yes, I pay double of what I used to when I lived with roommates but my peace, happiness and sanity has no price. I was very lucky to find my current place but getting that was expensive. I went from paying $1500 for a room in a 3 bdr to paying $2700 for a Jr studio! Its a very nice big studio with the kitchen/dining room separate from the main room, plus a medium sized walking closet, storage closet, nice size bathroom etc.. but if you want privacy there a price to pay

    • @Kayyvr
      @Kayyvr 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @S88040 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Kayyvr yes girl! Haha $2700 and that's just rent. :/ SF is extremely expensive and it also depends in what neighborhood you live on. I like to live in a nice one, therefore the price goes up!. I made a little bit over $72,000 a year but Im single with no kids, therefore I can afford me hahaha. If you have a family here with 1-2 kids, and you wanna live in a nice place, the minimum you have to make its over $130,000 which its crazy!so what I make its good enough for me. Yes its very expensive but my happiness and sanity has no price! Living with roommates was one of the worst things that happened to me, I HATED IT! and I've been living in SF for almost 9 years so Im used to the cost of living, it doesn't shock me anymore :/.sadly you get for what you pay, and for me its very worth it because of the area, the place, the size everything:)
