Only two observations. You built your shelter on the lowest area which will become colder due to cold air sinking to lower levels. You collected rocks near water which increases the possibility of them exploding after being heated. Rocks that are away from water and not buried too deeply are less likely to do this, but not impossible. The Idea of building shelter under a fallen tree is worthy of experimenting in various locations.

My first thought at 1:50... why not brush as much snow off of th log as you could? Cold water dripping on you cannot be good. But I will admit there have been more than a few times I wished I had something like this.

Could of insulated a little better.
Yes!!! Definitely I though about using snow but the heat from the fire inside the shelter was melting it.
