    One of the saddest days of my life was having to sell my Klipschorns that I had owned for 25 years. I had bought a new home, large, open floor plan with high a cathedral ceiling on a beautiful site with a grand view of Lake Ontario. Only a couple hundred feet away and the house was up about 150 feet from the water. I know, I know, I digress. The only problem was there was only ONE corner suitable for a Kipschorn. If I was deaf in one ear I would have put one there and run it in mono and been as good as good could be. But no, both ears worked quite well. I REALLY wanted that house and also REALLY wanted the corner horns too! I couldn't even find a good place for Cornwalls. DAMNIT!
    In the end the house won out. But I couldn't bear selling the Klipschorns. The large garage was finished and very dry so I stored them in it for two years until I could let them go. Called a local Klipsch dealer who came out. took a quick look and made me a very good offer, MORE than I paid for them originally, of course. They came back later in the day with a big van and moving quilts, gave me a check, loaded them up and drove away. I poured a generous Irish Whiskey on the rocks and sat on the deck, looking out over the lake. The awful choices one sometimes has to make in this life...

    In the late 1970’s, Speakerlab was selling speaker kits and they also offered the plans to build their version of the Klipschorn. My friend Jack’s Father-in-law had a large shop and we went there every Saturday or Sunday and spent an afternoon building our pair of folded corner horns.
    We used six sheets of marine grade plywood to make the two parts of each speaker.
    The speakers came out very nicely. They were good copies and most likely not quite as impressive as true Paul Klipsch Factory KHorns but very good none the less.
    For Jack and I it was a excellent project for two friends to enjoy building together. THAT was where the real value and quality of our efforts was of highest value.

    This guy gets it. I bought the 70th Anniversary KHorns 2+ years ago and it was the greatest decision I have ever made in my audio journey. Speakerwise in that system which is my primary Music/HT system I am done. Have zero desire to ever buy a different Stereo pair. 3 way fully loaded horns are simply stunning, especially these. Mine are the same with the closed back except Michael's AK6 model has a new tweeter, internal wiring and other minor improvements. The 70th is sort of a AK5.5 model. A year later I got matching pair of 70th Edition Heresy's and use 1 as Center Channel and the other as a Center Rear channel when playing movies or SACD. I listen to music only in 3CH Stereo and it's awesome, passive or DSP it's all good. Meridian's Trifield, Ambisonic UHJ and other 3CH logic DSP modes they have for music are simply amazing. It's even fun turning on the center rear for ambiance or for discrete when listening to 5.1 SACDs with a mono rear, makes it sound like you are just enveloped in a personal band playing just for you at the highest fidelity. Glad to see some KHorns on the channel! Keep up the great work Steve.

      $12,000 for a pair is not much in hi-end audiophile terms. Much more expensive stuff out there. For what the Klipschorns do they may be considered a bargain.

    • @theklipschcave3389
      @theklipschcave3389 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They are the best, if you got enough room. You need at least 3 meters between them and 1,5 meters on the sides of them to let them breath and sing. You will have to take care in order to get the right bass-sound out of them. A DSP is recommended by some to get it right. Have clean hard surface drywalls around so the sound can reflect alongside the walls and extend the corners onward with the sidewalls as elongated part of the speakers cabinet. Read the Dope from Hope from Paul Klipsch. When in doubt call Volti Audio, not Klipsch support. Many of the friendly people there just haven't got the experience with acoustics when it comes to the horns. Clean hard walls, enough space and not overdamped listening-rooms.

    Michael is very right when he speaks about the pure physics of cable quality and termination, but I'm not sure he's a skeptic. About 25 years ago I scored a 1000' reel of very nice 16 ga zip cord. Very good copper wire with very good heat resistant insulation. Stripped properly (no nicks) and silver soldered I've found it to be entirely satisfying.

  • @BlankBrain
    @BlankBrain 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    IMHO This is one of the best and most practical systems so far. Michael pays attention to physics - mostly. The "problem" with Klipshorns is phasing between drivers. This can be overcome by using active crossovers, delays, and bi-amping or tri-amping. The time difference required between the low and midrange/high almost precludes using an analog delay. So the best solution is to invest in ADC, DSP, and multiple DACs. The DSP includes the crossovers and delays. Fortunately, FPGAs allow excellent DSP to be created with very long FIR filters.
    I've loved Klipshorns ever since my college days in the '70s. I was able to get a hold of original Electro-Voice plans, and got them to a friend of mine who had excellent woodworking skills. He built a pair for himself and another mutual friend. They were both electrical engineering students and wound up being room mates. They used to throw outdoor dances with "corners" added to the backs of the speakers. They stored the speakers in their dorm room, two stacked in two corners. During dead week in the spring, one of the friends, who coincidentally was dorm president, opened the windows, put on an album, cranked up the amps, locked the door, and left. The whole quad was treated to substantial music.

    Back in the 1970s, I went to a party at some guy's house who had a pair of Klipschorns. My jaw dropped to the floor because I had never heard music sound so good before or since. Every jazz record he played sounded like the band was performing right in the room.
    At one point he asked for requests. Since I was a huge Beatles fan, I asked for some. He rolled his eyes and said disparagingly, "No,and I don't have any Monkeys albums either."

    I agree with the late Paul Klipsch on two things at least: 3 channel audio is the way to go and the Klipschhorn is about as perfect a speaker as can be made for home use.
    Truly, obviously, there is no way to fully say that one speaker is perfect or even better than another, but the Klipschorns are the speakers that most impress me over the last 40+ years. I've heard some big, crazy expensive speakers and I still like the K horns the most.

    • @HareDeLune
      @HareDeLune 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Three channel audio is new to me. What are the advantages over two channel?
      A good two channel system makes a perfectly good soundstage or center image, so I don't understand how adding a center speaker would be that much better?

    • @AndyBHome
      @AndyBHome 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HareDeLune The illusion of soundstage/3D image that is produced by stereo is "fragile" and easily broken when listeners move their heads, even a tiny bit - something everyone does unconsciously for their brains to be better able to pinpoint the source of sounds. It's true that you can get a perfect image with a good stereo system, but it works best if you stay completely still. When "3D" sound was first being explored by RCA in the 30s (I think this is true, but I haven't seen the papers for myself, so maybe it's audiophile urban legend) they determined that the fewest number of speakers needed to produce and maintain a good image was 3. In tests they found that the illusion improved all the way up to 12 speakers placed across a stage, but that 3 did a sufficient job of holding an image, even when a person moved around a little. Maybe it's the speakers outnumbering your ears? Whatever it is, with just 2 channels, the illusion of something making sound 15 feet ahead of you and 2 feet to the left while staying very still, suddenly sounds like it's coming from 2 points as soon as you move, or turn your head. I guess it's just way harder for our ears and brain to figure out when it's coming from 3 points. Interestingly, the effect does not absolutely require a 3 channel recording. It can actually be achieved quite effectively by merely creating a 3rd channel electronically that's made of only the common elements of the left and right signal, and playing that synthesized channel in between them. I do believe there were many preamplifiers, and maybe even some receivers, that offered that synthesized channel in the early days of multi-channel audio. I seem to remember seeing that option on some early 60s McIntosh preamps. I think a lot of experimenters tried 3 channel in the late 50s and early 60s before stereo became the standard.
      Also very interesting to me; I also heard that they determined that the best, most practical 3D image could be achieved quite easily with a 5 channel system consisting of a Left, Right, Center, Rear and Height. That is, if I'm not mistaken, almost what the original Dolby Surround for home audio was. I don't know, but it seems like that was what they did in theaters for a long time, possibly without the height channel, which has finally come to home audio and maybe theaters too, with Dolby Atmos. It's just fascinating to me that engineers at RCA were figuring this out in the 1930s, if it's true.

      That's a thing from the good old days when they used the old horns in large listening-rooms. Like in hotels, entrances, conference centers and such. To cover the center "hole" they put in the Heresy. I have never tried it.
      But I have listened to the K-horns in smaller rooms and there you don't need this arrangement. But never the less I have seen pictures with K-horns in small living-rooms with the La Scala as a center speaker. Crazy stuff, but seem to like the set up since they insist that they wan't to get buried in one of the units...

    • @AndyBHome
      @AndyBHome 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HareDeLune Before stereo became the standard there were really only mono amps anyway. People wanting to do stereo bought another amp and speaker to add to their existing amp and speaker. If you wanted to do 3 channels, you bought two more amps and speakers. I suppose anyone could still do that today. I guess the question is where to get a preamp that can take the stereo signals and make a third channel for the middle. It's something I am really tempted to try.

    As I recall the Heresy was named such due to not being fully horn loaded. The 12 inch woofer was in a sealed cabinet, possibly even air suspension.

    • @stephenmead5488
      @stephenmead5488 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Heresys are not air suspension per se. They are closed back more akin to infinite baffle where the cabinet only provides isolation of the front and back waves. A true acoustic suspension speaker uses woofers with long excursion, high compliance, & low resonance cones mated to a sealed enclosure that provides an acoustic compliance or spring to enhance the woofer response in the lower bass. Acoustic or air suspension designs trade off efficiency for compact size and low frequency output. The Heresy woofer is a high efficiency design driver that requires no enclosure: just a baffle to segregate the front and back of the cone.

Steve stated they don't need to be in the corner and the Klipsch AK6 owners manual states that they "no longer have to be flush to the corner" but then goes on to say that "the corner still serves as an extension of the low frequency horn." It finishes by stating, "for best results, Klipsch highly recommends the Klipschorn be placed in the proximity of a corner." Yes, the addition of back panels to the K-Horn will allow some minor toe in and location tweaking but they do not in any way eliminate the need for corner placement. Klipsch doesn't set them up any differently at trade shows than they did before and all their product literature still shows them tucked up very close to the corners as they truly need to be. K-Horns are incredibly good speakers but easily the most room dependent (literally) speakers the average person could bring into their homes. You really need a room with two fairly identical corners, preferably with several feet of wall extending out on either side of the speaker. You must also keep in mind that the distance between your rooms corners will determine speaker placement and, subsequently, your seating position. A seating position which almost always sounds best if a foot or more behind where the tweeter and mid horns axis cross. If you are willing to accommodate the speaker and have the room to do so then you will be rewarded with some of the most lifelike, easy and dynamic sound one can get for less than a hundred grand. If you don't have the room or willingness to adjust to the speaker's requirements then they are just pricey paper weights.

      I was at a show recently, in a large room by Klipsch, and they didn't place the speakers in the corners. The walls only serve to extend and fill in the mid bass region.The speakers don't have any low bass to speak of even though they are on the large side.

    • @davep2945
      @davep2945 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@carlosoliveira-rc2xt Hey Carlos. Yes, unfortunately at shows things are often compromised and one does not get to hear the equipment at it's best. But your experience makes me wonder if the set up was done by a local dealer or a distributor instead of Klipsch corporate reps. No matter the case, the first two should know better but I've been in a lot of dealers stores over the years and it always surprises me how little effort they put in to trying to make very expensive products sound like they're worth the money. Corporate reps usually do the very best they can even if it's not perfect. Now, as far as the K-Horns not having any bass in the scenario you describe. Yeah, they probably didn't, because they have to be in the corners and they weren't. But no, the absence of walls didn't do much to affect the mid-bass region because the room walls don't serve to extend and fill in mid-bass, they serve to extend the lower frequencies. The K-Horns folded horn section is long enough to support good mid bass without the walls for reinforcement. For low bass the horn and the horn mouth area are not enough to augment the low frequencies without the walls of a room for support. Plus, corner placement boosts bass for any speaker. But, truth be told, those looking for massive bass in the sub -- 35 Hz will be disappointed. The K-Horns even in the best set ups are rated at up to 4 DB down at 33 Hz. Meaning they will begin to roll off sooner than that. In a proper setup they probably won't start to roll off until 40 or so Hz but then drop off sharply. Poor placement could have them start to roll off enough to be noticeable by the 60 to 80 Hz range which would absolutely make them sound lean and give the impression they have no low bass. When everything is done right they have strong (often very strong) bass to at least 40 Hz and usually a bit lower. But as big as it is, believe it or not, the K-Horn is actually too small even with room reinforcement to produce the extremely low frequencies of the bottom octave with authority, if at all. It's just the nature of horn loaded speakers and has nothing to do with Klipsch themselves. Low frequencies need extremely long horn paths and very large mouth openings to work.

    The K402 Jubilee was PWK and Roy Delgados design to replace the Klipschorn as PWK wanted to go 2 way. It only went pro after PWK died and before the project was finished, though he did hear earlier versions. Pro was Roy's department for a long time and you're just now starting to see his mark on the home consumer Klipsch speakers that everyones been raving about. The K402 is non fatiguing even in small rooms. They're incredible, though many who own Jubes tend to replace the stock compression drivers with Radian or TAD especially those with beryllium diaphragms but those start to get pricey. I personally heard them in a small room with Radian compression drivers though i forget the model. You'll be ditching passive networks and go active with Jubes, though there are passive crossovers.
    As far as the Klipschorn. Closing the backs makes it so much easier to live with. I personally just sold my 74 Klipschorns and still feel sad about it. They're just way too hard to live with without the proper room distance and perfect corners to tuck them tightly into. I lack the woodworking skill or desire to close them in myself. I'm sure the AK6 sounds amazing, but room along with driver time alignment will always be it's two biggest issues. I'm totally happy with my series 1 Klipsch Epic CF-3's and hoping to find the CF-4's. They were Roy's first home design for Klipsch. The world and die hard heritage Klipsch fans just weren't ready for them back in 1994. The series 1 CF-4's are sort of a unicorn of Klipsch speakers outside of pro models all of which Roy's had his hands on. The CF-4 horn lens is now used as the mid horn with updated mumps in the new Cornwall IV, though the CF-4 version was kind of thin and cheaply made. As with all horns, they will benefit from applying something like dynamat to the back of the horns.

    Sometimes cables are the best value for money if you are looking for an audible upgrade when you system gets to a certain price point. I swap new cables back and forth a few times with the same few tracks. It is very easy to hear differences. The speaker cables I have literally make the singer sound 2 feet taller and larger, imaging get more pinpoint accurate, and my new cables are tonally cooler sounding than my previous 12 gauge generic speaker cable.

    I 100% agree on the cable topic... my father was an electrician and said as long as you have the right gage good copper wire and it’s not damaged there’s no way you would be able to hear a difference. That’s not to say you should buy cheaply made wire, no not at all, but buy something durable and well made just don’t spend a million dollars on it... cause that’s just crazy. Most of the sleeves etc are just nice to look at, they do not effect performance.

It's okay to have different opinions but when you opinions have been proven wrong by science your going to sound ridiculous. As he said, From the top 10 cable companies lamp wire made number 4, so if you really believed cables made a difference, and you really cared about having the best soundings one you would either have lamp wire or one of the top 3 costings likely 10s of thousands. If they really do make a difference why can no one differentiate them in a blind test?

I bought a pair of RCA to RCA interconnects off ebay a few weeks ago and they used the sort of lead you have in balanced cables: the treble was rolled off quite a bit; they were in a quad configuration and slightly thinner than my Atlas ones. You have to be careful what you buy and who you buy them from.
