    Every set of speakers I now own are Klipsch. I started out with a set of La Scalas and graduated to my Klipschorns. They are 1978 models and will be with me from now on. Nothing really can prepare you for how they sound. Paul Klipsch was an American genius.

    I appreciate the idea that both of you realize that hearing a musician live, in a small, closed environment (not a 'concert'); whether it be yourself or another person/group, makes a substantial contribution to how you listen to a system. Most people I know have no idea of what it's like to be at a live practice or recording session, and therefore have no idea of what the 'live' sound actually is. People really don't understand until they actually have that personal experience in a small, controlled environment.

    PWK was very fortunate to have found a protege like Roy Delgado to take over the design aspects of Paul’s company. In fact, everyone who likes, or more importantly loves music, that Roy is making speakers that have emotional connectivity, which for me is critical for zoning out to tunes. I’ve heard the original Klipschorns but I’m willing to bet that Roy’s new Jubilees, he so graciously attributes to his mentor Paul, will sound flat out awesome. I’m a corner horn fan because of their geometry that endows them with substantial benefits over other speaker configurations. Congratulations to Roy, the entire Klipsch team and to the late great Paul W. Klipsch for providing mankind with such an engaging way to connect with our music, thank you.

Impossible imho and listening experience, great interview top, thans

    Wish I had room for one. I’ll never forget the first time I heard the Kipschorn.

    • @nomorokay
      @nomorokay 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      louie sipes Not every room is suitable for Klipschorns, and it’s not just about how many square feet or metres of floor space you have. You need two adjacent corners where the speaker can be tightly pushed into the corner, to maximize the speakers’ coupling with the walls, since they function as extensions of the bass horns. My room has baseboard heaters and one open wall, so no go for me. As well, they need at least 8-1/2’ of ceiling height, which rules out many rooms.
      However, Paul Klipsch designed several speakers in his Heritage Series, because he wanted more people to be able to experience great sound. The La Scalas use the same drivers as the Klipschorn, but in a smaller cabinet that can be placed along a wall. It’s easy to compensate for its bass rolloff, due to its smaller bass horn, by adding a good subwoofer or two. The La Scala + sub combo is considered to be even better than the Klipschorn alone, by more than a few listeners. There’s also the Cornwall, designed to be used in a corner or along a wall. PWK had a sense of humour. Going smaller yet, you find the Forte,, which has a pretty solid bass end, and they’re a lot less expensive than Klipschorns.
      If all of those options are still too expensive, consider buying used. Unlike most speakers, which have woofers with foam rubber surrounds and need to be re-surrounded or replaced every 15-20 years, Klipsch woofers are like those used in musical instrument cabinets, with doped-paper surrounds that last almost forever. I have a pair of 45-year-old La Scalas. They were 32 when I bought them, and although they sounded good, after I replaced the crossover capacitors and the tweeters, they sounded even better. Now they’re probably good for another 45 years. It’s the same with the Heresy speakers. They just keep sounding good, decade after decade.
      Now that you know the facts, it’s time to determine which speakers you really want, and then begin saving. A special speaker savings account is a great idea. It may take months, maybe quite a few, but it’s doable. Go for it!

  • @Labor_Jones

    Thanks the Both of you and looking forward to the second part.
    ....now about AMPS - POWER - and - The Path to Least Resistance sound to me like Computers and Programming. I did a LOT of BETA Testing from about 87 to 94 & a smart man (Quicken) told me that the problem with most Programming then was 'Wasting the Power of a New Processor' (the amp) on 'Sloppiness,' because the Programmers had more power.
    Over the years most of the Programmers I knew would say the same thing to me, so I understood Mr. Delgado when his comment about 'the path of least resistance,' changed how successful technologies are dropped for convenience.
    It appears that if you find a link and of those 2 alike items one is easier to make, even if it never reaches the equivalency of the latter, because of cost. Then often it means dropping the other technology for streamlining whether for cost or other reason.
    LUCKILY we have a segment of listeners who understand why that might be a mistake.

    I've been using those horn speakers since the 70's. Oh, I've tried others, but the horns give me a stage upon which I see the artist. I am still amazed at the sound of my Cornwall's and Heresy's. I never needed to go to concerts...I have a concert every day at home.

    Hi Steve. Funny coincidence that the photo of Paul Klipsch has him standing with a Klipschorn corner cabinet. As a teen, my father had a friend who obtained plans for the corner cabinet and made his own (he was an excellent wood worker). We obtained the speakers when we bought the house from him. This Klipschorn was a pretty unique design. It had a downward firing 15" woofer but the opening for the woofer was semi-circular and it fired into a chamber that opened into the inside rear of the cabinet and the cabinet had an open back. The top part of the cabinet had a horn mid-range and a horn tweeter. While the Klipsch speaker components were not available, he managed to obtain horn drivers, a woofer and proper cross-overs from Electrovoice, who also made excellent horn drivers back in the day and still make great professional speakers for the music industry. To drive the speakers he had a kit built Scott tube amp and matching Scott tube tuner + preamp. The amp was only rated at 32W/ch but you would never know it listening to these speakers. The horns were so efficient that this old system performed better than my friends' modern 100W/ch systems (a lot of power back then) and the sound was incredible. I would drive my neighbour crazy whenever my parents went away, cranking up Deep Purple Machine Head on vinyl. My dad's friend also had a very coveted reel-to-reel version of the 1812 overture; when the cannons went off, the house shook! There is such a huge variety of audiophile equipment out there now, but many people don't realize just how good some of these systems from the 70's could sound.

    • @paulbecker2271
      @paulbecker2271 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just a nitpick: The Klipschorn does not have a "downward firing" woofer. The woofer fires forward.

      @@edeppel6710 Thank you for the clarification. I own a set of 1968 Klipschorns and know of the interior arrangement of a 1950's model and neither fire downward. Your statement of "not an actual Klipsch" sounds like it may be more accurately stated as not a Klipschorn at all. Even the "SpeakerLab-K" plans that were purported to be clones and distributed for a time had a front-firing woofer. Many Electrovoice drivers were used in factory Klipschorns. Do you still have those cabinets?

    • @edeppel6710
      @edeppel6710 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@paulbecker2271 No, I was a teen at the time and the house has since been sold with the system included. Sadly the builder has passed away so I can't ask where he got the designs from. I remember they used Electrovoice crossovers as well similar to the X36.

    Two of the main reasons horns sound better than non horn loaded speakers reside in the lower distortion figure and the less reverberation they create being directive. Properly designed horns have no horn unless they are integrated the wrong way into a system.

  • @pandstar

    As much as I enjoy a great 'self made engineering wizard' story, and Mr. Delgado certainly does have one. But I just can't go there, with Klipsch products. And it's not for lack of trying.
    I have heard quite a few Klipsch models, from budget models, up to top of the line. I had a pair of Heresy IV in my house for several weeks (my cousin bought a pair but had to leave town on business, so I took them off his hands while he was gone), so I got to hear them in a well set up room, driven by very good solid state and tube gear.
    When I first got them set up, I was pretty enthralled with them at first. But it did not take too long for their few positive aspects (very dynamic, efficient, and could play loud) to become overshadowed by their negative aspects. Sorry folks, but they come off sounding, to me, like a 'blunt instrument'. They seem to make all music sound like it is coming out of a PA system. While this might be ok for music that is normally reproduced by PA systems, it is not for many other types of music.
    I guess some people may say I am not the right customer for Klipsch, since I care more about other aspects of audio reproduction that Klipsch does not excel at (detail, openness, imaging, soundstage, timbre), which is fine, I guess.

      @@philipkeohane2652 I do.
      The vast majority of my music collection is made up of prog, prog-metal, jazz, and modern classical. Almost all mainstream recordings.
      The reason I am into audio equipment in the first place, is to allow myself to get more emotionally into the music.
      The music always comes first.
      Nice try, though to try to apply some false stereotype on me, as someone who cares more about the gear than the music.

    • @pandstar
      @pandstar 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ASherrick02 I've heard some vintage La Scalas, but that was years ago. You are correct, I should give them another listen.
      But there are quite a few speakers at around the same cost, that are awfully good. So, the La Scalas would some pretty high hurdles to overcome.

    • @pandstar
      @pandstar 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@philipkeohane2652 It might be that the music I like, is not conducive to the Klipsch signature sound...
      I can see if one listens to EDM. punk, mainstream rock, hip hop, or similar, then Klipsch may be the best speaker. But the music I gravitate to tends to be more musicianship oriented, with subtle and not so subtle: changes in: keys, time signatures, tempos, dynamics, emotional content, etc.
      I want my system and speakers to navigate those kind of changes with as much accuracy as possible. The various models of Klipsch that I have heard, are not able to do that when compared to other speakers at similar price points.
      Again, I admit that I may not be the target audience for Klipsch. But when I see reviews by various audio reviewers that tend to like some of the other audio gear that I like, I assume that the Klipsch will kind of compete with some of those other speakers. At least when Steve Gutenberg reviews them, he comes right out and states that they are 'party speakers', and not really meant for subtlety.

    Yo man, There's a nice set of Sansui SPX 7000's for sale locally where I live. They have one less midrange driver than the SPX 8000. Let me know if you'd be interested in working something out to get your hands on em.

    The Heresy IV is on sale so have Klipsch stopped making the Heresy III? Their prices are a long way apart so they could be two different models both on sale at the same time. Does anyone know?

    *****Power of Horns***** Power of the coloration of music. Horns ALWAYS color the music! PROVE this to yourself,
    speak into a mirror, now cup your hands creating a HORN, speak again, sounded awful didn't it? And it always will.

      The test you are referring to is akin to taking a standard midrange driver and playing it devoid of the woofer and tweeter. Try that sometime and see if you get a similar result.
