  • For its third generation the folks at Kia put together a redesign for the Soul that achieves the sometimes quite amazing. They improved on a good thing, but didn't make it unrecognizable. This new Soul has so many things going for it, and some things we wish were different, but check out all our thoughts here, now.

I am 91 years of age and I drive a 2012 Soul. I am thinking about buying another car and would not consider anything but another Soul. I have not had to spend one dime on this car in 7 years, aside from the consumables like tires, brakes, and oil changes. All the other cars in this class look alike and appear to be squeezed-down versions of their parent car. The Kia Soul has distinction and character. Kia made square stylish. Go Kia!

I just received a 2012 Soul (husband bought a new 2022 Soul) and I love it! It's one of the few distinctive, stylish cars on the road, in a sea of boring jellybeans.

KIA hit a jackpot with the Soul. They actually stole the market from the Honda Fit, Honda Element, Nissan Cube, Pontiac Vibe, Toyota Matrix, Chevy HHR, Chrysler PT Cruiser and even Scion. Most of those went out of production due to poor sales but the Soul lives on. Only disappointed is that it doesn't come with a pet hamster. Lol

"Hyundai and Kia are recalling nearly 1.2 million more cars in the United States for engine failures after customers reported additional failures since the original 2015 recall, according to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)." 2017
"DETROIT (AP) - Despite a government shutdown, Hyundai and Kia are moving ahead with a recall of about 168,000 vehicles to fix a fuel pipe problem that can cause engine fires. The problem stems from improper repairs during previous recalls for engine failures.
      ...
In addition to the recall, each automaker says it will do a “product improvement campaign” covering a total of 3.7 million vehicles to install software that will alert drivers of possible engine failures and send the cars into a reduced-speed “limp” mode if problems are detected." Jan, 2019
"DETROIT (AP) - Hyundai has found a new problem that can cause its car engines to fail or catch fire, issuing yet another recall to fix problems that have affected more than 6 million vehicles during the past 3 ½ years.

It’s a different problem from what has caused the rest of the recalls since 2015 from Hyundai and its affiliated automaker Kia, which have been plagued by engine failures and fires across the U.S." Apr, 2019

The sub-compact SUV category is bullshit to begin with. They are just compact hatchbacks on stilts with some body cladding. Most offer almost no advantage over a proper hatch or even most sedans. They are literally for Millennials who want the current fashion of a SUV. The Kia Soul was never about trying to mimic an SUV, it was simply hip boxy hatchback. Although, with the X line, even Kia is trying to cash in on the crossover craze with it.

I bought a Soul X 2020 two weeks ago and I am turning 61 in a month. I do think it is more popular with my generation than with the young and hip. Kia: take notice. I love this car: how it looks, how comfortable it feels, how well it handles. Oh, and the affordable price. Yes, it is far from a luxury car, and some things could be better, e.g. the somewhat rough ride on patchy pavement, or lack of AWD. But heck, one still gets a lot for the money. I like the engine turning itself off at stops (this feature can be turned off), and I find the start to be fairly smooth. The IVT transmission feels great - it is silky smooth and I do not mind not sensing gear changes (there aren't any).

"DETROIT (AP) - Hyundai has found a new problem that can cause its car engines to fail or catch fire, issuing yet another recall to fix problems that have affected more than 6 million vehicles during the past 3 ½ years.
      ...
It’s a different problem from what has caused the rest of the recalls since 2015 from Hyundai and its affiliated automaker Kia, which have been plagued by engine failures and fires across the U.S." Apr, 2019

I can't really decide which one is cuter, you or the Soul you're reviewing. But great job, I enjoyed this video, I use to own a 2012 Kia Soul Sx with lux package.

What's funny is, you can spec it to have the GT-Line trim package, but still keep the 2.0l + IVT drivetrain. I daily drive a lot in LA, and this is the ideal combo IMHO

Re: inability to deal with potholes, there will probably be some improvement if one gets the LX or S trim level. The X-Line comes with low-profile 235/45 R18 tires, whereas the LX and S models come with 205/60 R16 tires.

Not surprisingly KIA has been asked about AWD in the Soul. Their response has been first that adding an AWD option would have required modifying the shared platform the Soul employs and thereby increasing costs for all models. Second, it would have meant adding the equivalent of weight of an NFL cornerback to the back seat of the Soul. A significant penalty for such a small, light vehicle. Finally, their market research indicated that AWD was a relatively low priority among potential buyers and many current owners thought their Souls already had AWD!
In reality, while AWD is a trendy feature FWD vehicles with a good set of winter tires and the weight of the engine over the drive wheels works very well in a vehicle the size and weight of the Soul. I once drove a Saab 96, a vehicle about the same size as the Soul through multiple winters in upstate New York. It never missed a beat climbing the steep hills of Ithaca, New York while more other vehicles were either at home or sitting beside the road. Is the Soul a serious off-roader? Of course, not. But neither is the competition in its market category.

When you look at the Kia Soul (the last generation and this one) , you could get away with calling it a sub-compact CUV.(without AWD) The Soul, Scion XB, and even the Nissan Cube really started the "hatchback"/sub compact CUV
