    Literally the thing I struggle with the most. I hit 70% of fairways last year and 30% GiR. That's brutal. Nothing to do with my swing, talent, instinct. Everything to do with my golf smarts. I think the phrase I'm adopting this year is, "You've spent 3 years learning to play golf swing, now this year it is time to learn to play golf".

    • @johnnybgood7442
      @johnnybgood7442 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No doubt. A big thing is learning how far you actually CARRY an iron shot. Most double digit players carry it shorter than they think. Learning to hit pin high, regardless of direction is a big key to playing better golf. Good luck 🤞

    • @jacobmccain8082
      @jacobmccain8082 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@johnnybgood7442 Yep. Carry is king. It's all you can really control on the course. I work a lot to know pretty much exactly how far I carry every club. The rollout is just an educated guess.

    • @johnnybgood7442
      @johnnybgood7442 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jacobmccain8082 for sure. The roll out is less of a factor when you start playing with the premium balls. (Obviously height helps as well) But those mid - lower tier balls I'm with you %100, really tough to judge even for a good player.

    • @Si-Harris
      @Si-Harris 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Completely agree, I've stood on 180 yard par 3's recently, normally I'd think "Oh on the range that's just a good 7 iron", but recently having more experience on the course and more stats on my actual course distances from my watch, I played safe and took a 4 hybrid. No ego, easy swing, fat shots aren't as harshly punished with that club and took the stress out of having to pure it. Easily made it close for a look at birdie. It's those kind of decisions that only come from experience out on the course actually playing.

    • @Pfuetz4
      @Pfuetz4 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Si-Harris I agree with the principle but going from a 7 to a 4 hybrid is quite the jump! If I tried to swing 40 yards off a club I usually pull those into oblivion lol.
      My problem last year was I never hit to a distance. I just adopted a "closer is better" mindset. On a par 5, if I had 250/300 in I'd for sure lay up to a wedge distance. However, from about 200 downward I'd have a really hard time justifying hitting two 54's instead of a 5i and a chip. I thought that I'd rather have any greenside chip than the alternative. It led to a lot of hard chips, not leaving it in good spots, and overall just not managing courses well.

    managing the course is absolutely the way, but I feel like ball striking helps with that a lot, knowing you can hit the shot you have to in any moment. but I guess that starts to play into shaping it too lol

    • @houndofzeus
      @houndofzeus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ya you can manage the course a lot better if you can strike the ball well. You can stay out of trouble much easier when the ball goes the direction and yardage that you’re intending

      Even if you have one shot shape, you have to capitalize on those holes that play to your advantage or consistency. Such as straight holes or dog right utilizing your natural fade. I can't hit draws on demand 🤣. But my fade is almost always guaranteed in iron play. It's been my go to since I learned to use a golf club. Which isn't long as I just started last may 2021. I played 3 clubs all season til the end I started using my driver. And all three were irons. So much more consistent and easier to learn when I don't have to learn 14 clubs to hit it consistent. One thing for sure, indoor ranges helped me learn my distance and yardage for my clubs. The numbers game lead to better course management and thus better scores. Keep on keeping on Not a scratch golfer! Enjoying your content.

    I normally have a 5-9 handi, but shot a
    +2 today. the difference was a hit 4 greens from 200 yards it made a HUGE difference. I also put my wedges away and had a bump and run short game with a 40inch hybrid giving me +.2 strokes off. It was all really clean and felt good and I didn't even make any birdies. the biggest thing for me is that I never hit birdies and making a putt outside of 9ft never happens and often bogey par 3's. If I ever learn how to putt long I may shoot par more often. Love this channel because we have similar handicaps, but way different games, its getting me to think about the game differently, Thanks!

    Key to par golf: do what you do best well. If you hit it long and straight off the tee, hit driver as often as you can. If you're good inside 100, try to give yourself as many chances as you can. If youre like me and not super long but pretty straight with consistent distance control, aim for middle of greens and two putt your heart out lol.

    Also helps having immensely wide open, forgiving fairways. At my home course, if you miss the fairway by 5 yards either side (average fairway width is around 33 yards) on every single par 4 and 5 hole, you're in the trees with no straight shot out. Unless you're outstandingly accurate with the driver, it is impossible to go low. As someone who is not accurate with a driver (yet, I hope to improve) it's incredibly demoralising every time I play. The other option to keep it in play is to hit an iron off the tee (I do this about half of the time just to keep my spirits up) but then you're in for long approach shots so GIR is basically impossible and you're back to square one.

    Not being a fast swing speed player the long clubs in the bag are a challenge to get right. There is a temptation to hit Driver on most holes in an attempt to get further up the fairway in order to get within range of your scoring irons. Keeping the ball in play is a 50/50 proposition with Driver for me and the recover shots getting back into play soon add up. I might lose 20-30 yards if I use 4 Wood off the tee, but keeping it in play avoids the recovery shots on the card. It is a balancing act, but working out how to link the tee shot to your reliable inside 100 yards shot is key . Recently I added a 7 Wood that is reliable for this role in my game (on par 5 holes) , but took out the 5 Wood and replaced it with a 14-17 degree 3-4 wood for tee shots.

But just for reference, my 25.5 degree 6 iron only carries 150 off the deck on a good strike. The channel has featured courses much easier and much harder than this one (71.6/130), and I always show the rating/slope of each course.
      Regardless, there's always a contingent of people who insist that I have to play even tougher courses, and I'm not sure why. The last time I featured a course with thick rough, one comment read, "ofc it does help when there's actual rough left and right to stop your ball." Today, it's the opposite comment. C'est la vie.

      @@NotAScratchGolfer Being from PA, our courses are a lot less forgiving. Hit a ball 20 feet outside of the rough and it’s either in thick brush / woods / thorns / tall grass > 5inches high. If you’re an average player and miss hit, it’s like playing a course on an island surrounded by hazards. These roughs and OB are shorter than the greens, ground is so hard and dry it bounces an extra 50 yards, air so thin you get an extra 30 yards too. I love these videos and strategies but I’d love to watch a video when you’re truly struggling on an unforgiving course.

    Dude, you hit your tee ball 280. This isn’t about “course management”. It’s about hitting it far enough to have short second shots. SMH

      I’ve never hit a ball 280 in neutral conditions in my life. The longer drives in this video are owed to firm fairways and downhill holes.

    Short game & play from the correct tees will do it.

    How are you able to play so much golf? Lol

  • @christopherhughes497

    Yes they can. I have had an awful swing in the past. I clubbed up 3 or 4 clubs to get to places I should of been able to with less club. Even hit a 3 wood to get to 160 yards. 5 hybrid for my 120 club. Early days of me playing this so was just having fun doing whatever. I managed to one day hit a 85 doing that. Luckily my chipping and putting is at a better level than I am really so never 3 putt. 80 yards in and I look like a player. I have my swing in a better place now, still lack distance and my driver only goes 200 but I'm gapped much better. I am nearly breaking 80 now best is 80. I let my chipping and putting suffer in order to get better so should be done when I get those back on track again. So it depends how bad your swing is, I couldn't get near par but I could hit a birdie a round and get some pars but not close to par. I think someone with a bad swing can get close with good decision making and a good short game as long as they can hit it far enough. I couldn't get the distance with lower irons etc so just replaced them with longer ones and woods so it made up for lack of power and technique. So something can be said for clubbing up and putting the ego aside. Can I reach that 180 yard par 3 with a 5 iron? Sometimes, but can I reach it with a barely 3/4 3 hybrid? Damn right I can. That's my take anyway. I was also on beta blockers around when I started so it did make me very calm. I would of broke 80 by now if I was still on them lol. I understand why they are banned in golf ha. I went from a 28 hc to 12 last year and now I'm back to 16 as I've done nothing but learn to swing. And I still can't lol. Golf is tough. Don't forget to enjoy it folks.
