Why the New Republic Didn't Place its Capital on Coruscant

  • The New Republic has defeated the empire and driven them from the core into the Outer Rim and Unknown Regions. They've set up defense councils, the New Republic Amnesty program, even ranger patrols in the outer rim. So how come they haven't returned to Coruscant yet? Now that the war is over surely the new republic can finally symbolically finalize their goal of revitalizing and restoring the republic by taking the traditional republic seat of power on Coruscant.

Honestly the worst part of the sequels is how it took all of the incredible sacrifices that the rebels made and made it all pointless. The culmination of all that suffering just ended up being a joke of a government that couldn’t even stop the most obvious enemy and was so weak that it collapsed in a single blow. Kanan, Andor, Luthen, Jyn, and many more peoples sacrifices all made meaningless because Mon Mothma wanted to basically virtue signal.

The biggest error the New Republic made was treating most of the Rebel Alliance as a military force and cutting them out of politics. Leia was the only one who really understood how to coordinate these two groups and her influence was erased when everyone found out she was Vader’s daughter.

The destruction of Alderaan is the equivalent of a government nuking of its own major cities in order to make a point and demonstrate power. I don't see any western government doing anything even remotely close to this. So no, we're not the empire.
But we do have issues that are similar to those of the old republic. Most of the governing is done by unelected bureaucrats, and the traits people need to rise into prominence within a political party and as politicians, make them terrible leaders of nations. In my native language there's an aphorism that translates to "Voting doesn't change anything, if it did, it were illegal." The past twenty years are not a counter against that.

If we were talking about any other planet but Coruscant I wouldn't be saying this. But I could never figure out why the population of Coruscant would be cheering the fall of the Empire. After 20+ years as the Imperial capital I can't but believe that if you lived on the planet, you worked for the Empire. Your job, your family's financial (if not political) security was tied up with the well being of the Empire. And after 20+ years Palpatine would have ensured that of all planets- Coruscant would be the truest, most loyal in all the Empire. Sure the lower levels would be glad to see the Empire go, but the um, "activities" that were engaged in down there would have been frowned upon & prosecuted by the New Republic as well.

It would be really interesting to see a Star Wars thing set entirely in the lower levels of an ecumenopolis like Coruscant or Taris.
I hope it's not giving too much credit to Tony Gilroy to think the green and gold Senator in that scene is a perfect example of ducktalk from 1984 (as well as just repeating post-9/11 propaganda verbatim).

I am corious about how they will re introduce Coruscant in the saga. Call it Coruscant, Hosnian Prime or what you want, but for the main audience is the capital planet, and the capital planet was destroyed in The Force Awakens for a trilogy in wich the main order was destroyed and everything happened in a struggle for the galaxy beyond it. Happy about not putting it in Episode IX as Trevorrow wanted, going back to Coruscant has to mean a lot as the forgotten in the shadows planet it should be right now (I am curious about how a megalopolis like that is going without a Republic to feed its massive population, have they gone full cannibal Siege of Suiyang style?) and Rey for sure has to deal with it as a world dragged into the darkness by her own grandfather

I don’t get your claim. Coruscant was routinely used in the lore until Disney through the lore out. To what do you refer that it was not used by the New Republic? The New Republic and later Galactic Alliance both used it as their capital.

Am I the only one for who Coruscant sounds like an absolute hellhole to live in. A planet with nothing but kilometers of canonically badly lit tunnels and decrepit infrastructure, and a thin layer of opulently rich on the top. For all the "oh this planet is totally dependant on exported food" in the canon (assuming Clone Wars is canon) and how bad it is, average citizen in Coruscant has much worse chances at good life than pretty much any climatically comparable planet.
