18:29 well put. The TIE fighter corps truly was the only part of the empire that had any real aspect of merit-based advancement at all. It’s just one more reason why Thrawn saw so much more benefit to a TIE Advanced program v. Death Star. Not only would the empire get much more “effectiveness” for every credit spent, but those who operated the machines built by the project would be, on average, of a much higher caliber.
Especially since cost meant that the Advanced would still be both uncommon AND reserved for the pilots least likely to lose such an expensive machine. You have to be better than the other already elite TIE Fighter Corps just to have a CHANCE at scoring one of those things. If you are good enough and crazy enough to take pride in piloting an unshielded coffin, you are awarded both a shield and a hyperdrive. 🥇🏆🥇
TIE fighter looks cool and sounds even better, but flying one in combat seems equivalent to a medieval knight NOT wearing armor but instead a super advanced computer suit with sensors at every part of his body leading to his groin that allows every contact whether weak or strong to feel like a Jean Claude Van Damm spin kick to the nuts.
Alan, Alan, and the rest of the Generation Tech team just pumps out top-tier Star Wars analysis and commentary day after freaking day. It's my favorite. It's refreshing to have a truely philosophical and intelligent discussion about starwars, and many of the messages in it. To many people just get sucked into "lazer sword is cool!" And never stop to consider what the stories are trying to teach.
The cost of replacing a Tie Fighter pilot with all that training cost already invested would be _far more_ than even the price of replacing a standard Tie Fighter. And just a little more expense spent on shields and other survivability features would have far more than paid for itself. A more robust Tie Fighter would have also increased its lethality by allowing the Fighter to tank hits and so go on to kill the target, complete the mission, or just live to fly for the Empire another day, as a more experienced pilot. Forget the Tie Defender with its expensive hyperdrive, that could potentially jump away from the fleet. Just 20,000 credits extra spent on a shield system, tougher hull, and perhaps a ordinance launcher would have resulted in a more effective and efficient _and deadly_ Tie Fighter core. All at the bargain cost of a extra ⅓ added to the cost of each Tie Fighter.
Which ultimately, times even half the total (countless nearly) TIEs accounts for the fortune the VERY bureaucratic an corrupt Empire Leadership ISNT about to spend

Tie fighters were basically mobile point-defence batteries, which might have been more effective if they'd bothered to add shields of any kind. TIE was designed in an era where the rebellion was still just a bunch of independent cells. Once things kicked off and the rebellion became unified, then those death machines should've been upgraded with shields.

It makes sense if you think of it as two separate decisions made by two separate organizations. While the schools trained up those whom would fill the limited seats available compared to the sheer numbers available in the system. Incredible breakdown and great explanation of how Tie Pilot Mentality make’s sense Good work Sad lack of logical consistency in SW Bring’s down the Vibe
In the movies X wings could take one maybe two shots before exploding. Those shields won’t protect you that much, I’d rather not get hit. The Tie is underated. Its fast, cheap to make and hits hard.
Just imagine how much more formidable the Empire could have been if those TIE Fighters had shields or if the Imperial Navy was actually trained for combat and not policing. The Galactic Civil War would probably have lasted longer
I think that actually makes a compelling argument for the war being shorter, the rebellion and it’s cells may have been crushed well before the Scariff incident.
I always liked the notion that one of the unstated goals of the TIE Fighter program was to sift out potential Force sensitives. That might have just been the one game though, I don't know.
I had a plan for a Westend Games/X-Wing Miniatures campaign where the players started off flying TIE/mg for a mining guild that gets nationalized to supply the Death Star and get put in TIE/ln and /sa that are modified (because they're still on the Outer Rim). They could have either extra armor, a shield, or integrated targeting (if one of them had a target lock, the bomber could use the targeting lock to fire a missile). During their patrol routes, they encounter smugglers and pirates, get into mock dogfights with a rival flight of TIEs, but also witness the excesses of the Empire. Eventually, they would have had the choice to turn in a Rebel spy or defect to the Alliance, getting access to the TIE/ad Avengers or heavily modified TIE/in fighters that were comparable to the Avengers.
Between four different unorthodox concepts I’ve become aware about Star Wars lore, including canon and in Legends, I wonder which one would’ve served the Empire better in terms of cost effectiveness. The reanimated TIE pilots from Nightsister Magic? The reanimated TIE fighter pilots infected by the Blackwing Virus? The shadow droid fighters utilizing repurposed organic brains as integral components for function as opposed from the rest of decaying bodies? Or, perhaps more of the TIE/D (drones) automated fighters which benefits many pilot lives if produced en masse?
I say the TIE drones would be much more beneficial for the empire. Deploying drones en masse aligns with their "strenght in numbers" tactics and can overwhelm enemies as a swarm, and you don't have to spend time and money into training pilots who you will in send in cheap fighers to die quickly, or either instead of pilots, train them to remotely operate the drones from the inside of the capital ship, much like combat drones IRL
I don't know how accurate the simulator games are. I used to dry-fire torpedoes ahead of target locks with a near 100% accuracy rating. Lasers and blasters a little less so but not by much.
This video made me actually realise why some special forces units like Inferno Squad were elite specially trained TIE pilots. Yeah they’re elite forces who ought to know how to fly, but as seen in their story they aren’t just able to fly star fighters, they excel. They aren’t just badasses, they’re the most badass bunch selected from an already badass bunch.
its a shame the empire didn't recognise how effective their fighter corps would've been if they had crafts that emphasised more on pilot safety. they would've been able to retain more experienced pilots and more aces in their ranks. these failures are actually reminiscent of the japanese empire during ww2. they to didn't emphasise much on pilot retainment cause they didn't consider veteran pilots as a valuable resource and hence as the pacific war progressed they lost more and more experienced pilots.
In a galaxy where there is a legit magic force that can protect you from getting shot, these guys fly in unshielded balls sandwhiched between two sheets of metal and expect to get out alive. Thanks for the video.
The Tie Fighter should have included an astromech, not only for the added capabilities but _as a security measure._ Having a random astromech assigned to you every mission - a astromech you don't have a personal relationship with, and one that can report on everything you do and possibly sabotage the ship if you show signs of trying to defect. One that _is wiped_ after every mission, once it's downloaded its data on the mission and the pilot's performance and behaviour. That would have helped both the effectiveness and cut back on possible disloyalty. It should have been a basic design requirement of any special high-end hyperdrive equipped Tie Fighters. If something similar to the Tie Defender program was implemented for elite pilots, it would have been a prudent extra measure. And just been in keeping with the Sith ideology and paranoia of the Empire.
How did Rebel pilots stand a chance against that level of long term training and professional instruction, even with more robust fighters that could disengage from combat by jumping to hyperspace? Surely they should have been swatting Rebels out of the vacuum, especially if the Rebels were even willing to send first time pilots on vital missions with no combat training and only the flight the experience of having flown T-16s around canyons.
Cuz a great part of the rebel alliance starfighter corp was also formed of ex-tie pilots; they already had the training and knew the tactics used by the empire. It's the same with the rebel high command: most of them were former imperial high command too and already knew all the rules, tricks and weaknesses of the imperial military and used them against them
I’m here watching a great creator give me passionate lore videos about ships in Star Wars while another one just posted another milked Acolyte video. These two things are not alike. Keep this stuff up GT!🫡
I think this is part of the reason I've always thought TIE Pilots are so cool. Just highly talented individuals with fierce egos despite their training. Wanting nothing more than to test themselves and stay operational instead of administrative.
A complete waste of manpower.. base minimum of combat worthy fighter, would be an interceptor with a small shield generator.. anything else is asking for it.
Shielded TIE/IN would have been the perfect ship for what the empire wanted, fast, deadly, manuverable, able to outclass anything in a short range fight
Just an analogy. I feel like the TIE Fighter is the MIG-21 of its universe. It is small, maneuverable, light weight, relatively easy to produce and so on. And like the TIE Fighter the MIG-21 did not have a very long range. Some experts say it was to prevent any pilot from defecting. And throughout its history there were indeed only a handful of pilots that did defect to NATO with their MIG-21's
Alan. So what happened if a young pilot showed above average precognitive abilities? Similar to Anakin, or even Luke.. maybe Han? How did the Empire or New Republic deal with them? What happened to them? Did they rise in position, were they tested on very difficult and intense missions, were they grouped into a special unit for advanced tactical missions? Did Vader take an interest in them? Did certain instructors gently caution certain individuals "not to stand out" too often? I don't buy the notion of The Force Awakens.. clearly Force sensitive individuals were abound, be they slaves like an older Anakin, or a young Palpatine unaware of his rage that could be transformative..
The inquisitors would actually get called in as early as the junior academy stage. One of the cadets that Ezra bridged was with on lothal had a sister that was taken if I recall
Were Star Destroyer pilots those who didn't quite make the cut for TIE fighter piloting? (Like people who could fly, but couldn't shoot; those who could shoot but not fly were better used as gunners IIRC)...
Tie fighter was loosely based off WW2 japanese fighters like Zero. Agile, fast, deadly in hands of experienced pilots. Zero armor , no self sealing fuel tanks, fragile as origami.
Andor was the first time the Empire didn't feel like cartoonish villians and more like the Militaristic (Movie) Starship Troopers Federation. Johnny Rico would so kick Luke Skywalker's @$$!!!
Ties are literally flying war hogs on fire. Quick and dangerous but compared to lions and tiger X wings and Y wings and maybe even cheetahs A wings. Ties are not much of a threat unless they have numbers.
I mean not that it's any comparison... but Russia still uses what may be seen as not fully modernized systems despite what they say. But even the modernized equipment that exists today in other militaries can feel less than safe. The idea behind say things like the Empire's idea would be you're flying by instrument not by sight. This may actually be safer in many cases as we know JFK Jr. most likely perished because he couldn't fly solely by his. I'm not saying their better than say the Rebel craft, but if you're going really fast windows are more ornamental than practical and you would assume you're moving really fast in a TIE. But then again you can have fires in space now... so who knows. You might assume Fire needs oxygen, fuel, and ignition/heat--but in Star Wars you're wrong.
the same thinking can be applied to B17 crews and wild weasel jockeys, doing suicidal jobs but will do it anyway because of the pride and honor it brings
I just thoughts of something funny. The tei fighter should have their solar panels be placing in a different areas of the body. One of solar panel should be on top, and another solar panel should at the bottom area. The hatch then could be relocating to side area of the pod. 😂 just one of those out of the blue funny little silly thoughts.
I’ve come to the conclusion that the reason you won’t tell us what happened to the Bens is because you’re secretly a cannibal and you ate them. Only logical conclusion

Assault gunboats have crews that can keep each other in check, tie advanced were usually only given out to special agents
In the movies X wings could take one maybe two shots before exploding. Those shields won’t protect you that much, I’d rather not get hit. The Tie is underated. Its fast, cheap to make and hits hard.
9 out of 10 tie fighter pilots crash before shooting down Luke Skywalker keep gambling Empire!
Just imagine how much more formidable the Empire could have been if those TIE Fighters had shields or if the Imperial Navy was actually trained for combat and not policing.
The Galactic Civil War would probably have lasted longer
agreed the amount of ace pilots they would've had in their ranks. they would've hunted rebels like sport
I think that actually makes a compelling argument for the war being shorter, the rebellion and it’s cells may have been crushed well before the Scariff incident.
You mean shorter no? Because the rebels would have been routed quicker
Yep. They let so many highly skilled pilots die.
I always liked the notion that one of the unstated goals of the TIE Fighter program was to sift out potential Force sensitives. That might have just been the one game though, I don't know.
I'm loving the new videos, great work Alan

Nice work. Thanks. My favorite flavor is blue or maybe red too close to call
They were always meant to be expendable
Imagine if they had mass manufactured TIE advanced, like Vader had at Yavin, they would of been terrifying in the swarm tactics the empire favored.
For such a long training time, and money investment, and 25K star destroyers, that's a lot of type A people.
Another great vid off the holonet
I don't know how accurate the simulator games are. I used to dry-fire torpedoes ahead of target locks with a near 100% accuracy rating.
Lasers and blasters a little less so but not by much.
Any time I hear someone say best of the best, I always think of that scene
Great video
Yo what’s the name of that cinematic at 18:00 with the leader of the tie squadron in “Star Wars squadrons” that’s sick.
Train the pilots like a 1st world country but supply them like a 3rd world empire.
Basically. Imagine having modern US style pilot training but stereotypical Soviet Union or actual late war Japanese piloting practices.
I suppose it takes a special type of individual (read: crazy) to fly that kind of death trap.
Given that Wookies are from the jungle, do you think they have a particular scent?
I'd assume they don't shower either.
Really shocked clone pilots weren't used
The Tie Fighter should have included an astromech, not only for the added capabilities but _as a security measure._
Having a random astromech assigned to you every mission - a astromech you don't have a personal relationship with, and one that can report on everything you do and possibly sabotage the ship if you show signs of trying to defect.
GT with the gun show today!!! Guns out suns out lol
It's the same with the rebel high command: most of them were former imperial high command too and already knew all the rules, tricks and weaknesses of the imperial military and used them against them
Truly glorious
The phantom manace plot was hyper drives are expensive
Good take away. I wonder if flight crews on carriers in reality were a source or at least comparable to TIE pilots?
This vid makes me want to play Squadrons again 😏
I’m here watching a great creator give me passionate lore videos about ships in Star Wars while another one just posted another milked Acolyte video. These two things are not alike. Keep this stuff up GT!🫡
*Insert Breaking Bad “You’re Goddamn Right” meme here*
I think this is part of the reason I've always thought TIE Pilots are so cool. Just highly talented individuals with fierce egos despite their training. Wanting nothing more than to test themselves and stay operational instead of administrative.
This is a great vid
Do a long form video on Robotech, please.
0:57
What cutscene is this from?
All of these clips are gorgeous - are they all from Squadrons or somewhere else?
Yeah squadrons from the trailers and game itself
You forgot to turn your printer off Allen.
Thrawn really had the right idea when it came to inventing the TIE Defender
Long Live The Empire!
Very Nice
@@GenerationTech Thanks for this.
Long live the Empire!!!
Was the thumbnail Takeo from Black Ops Zombies?
Vance never said anything about people who adopt or kids died or infertil .
Andor was the first time the Empire didn't feel like cartoonish villians and more like the Militaristic (Movie) Starship Troopers Federation. Johnny Rico would so kick Luke Skywalker's @$$!!!
Best pilots, bad ships.
I would hate to fly a tie they suckkk. always have seemed like flying death balls😂 no shields or hyperdrives strait terror
I could live without a hyperdrive, but the predecessors to the TIE fighters all had shields.
The tie fighter pilots had cooler helmets.
I thought the tie fighter wings were physical shields
Ties are literally flying war hogs on fire. Quick and dangerous but compared to lions and tiger X wings and Y wings and maybe even cheetahs A wings. Ties are not much of a threat unless they have numbers.
I love the empire
Actually I think it’s okay to ignore rules and sacrifice life to follow orders or to complete the mission
the same thinking can be applied to B17 crews and wild weasel jockeys, doing suicidal jobs but will do it anyway because of the pride and honor it brings
If you watch SW Resistance the First Order cares even less about the TIE pilots.
Makes no sense tbh, the lore says the opposite
Tie foghdr wings shotbevpsntrd shinny to reflect more blSter bults and center pantrd black to bland in sigh and space 😊
Tie Fighter pilots sound a bit like the Warboys from Mad Max 😅 😱 💀
lol I can see that
Long live the empire
When TIE Fighters go for a walk, they asked the Rebels how's their health plan.
Apparently it was great.
What cartoon were you showing?
I believe you’re referencing the official manga (Japanese cartoon) for the Lost stars novel. A weird collab but very cool
Cool to know on the Manga. I will look that up too. I was actually asking about the computer generated cartoon showing wedge going through training
👍
What of this 3d move?
2:34 you're chinese you say?
💀
Just think if the Empire produced millions of TIE defenders instead of the death star like Thrawn wanted.
Rising in democracy is mote politics then marret .
See: Zero pilots.
I never take SW manga seriously. It’s too “romance novel” and in my sf.
I’ve come to the conclusion that the reason you won’t tell us what happened to the Bens is because you’re secretly a cannibal and you ate them. Only logical conclusion
I know its kinda weird to make this connection but ima do it anyways, modern day women are equivalent to tie fighters. hot take.
