Thank you, GenX host-person! I didn't know the phone messages at the beginning of "Rockford" were voiced by actors in the episode. And I remember Letterman saying "I'm Letterman"--I didn't know it was Gene Wilder! Thanks for your great information, and keep up the great work!
As we got older, we realized just how trippy _HR PufnStuf_ was. It started in 1969. The Kroffts also sued McDonald's for copying their theme. Anyone who sues McDonald's and wins is cool with me.
*H.R. Puf'n'stuf* was definitely trippy, but another Krofft show, *The Bugaloos,* had it beat. Four young beatnik bugs (people with dragonfly wings) named Joy, Harmony, Courage, and IQ, who lived in Tranquility Forest, and sang songs. The villain was named Benita Bizarre, played by Martha Raye.
McDonald's and Krofft had a contract. McDonald's hired them as consultants. They then terminated the contract and went ahead. Too bad for McDonald's the trees looked too much like the Krofft IP. Sooo sad....no more McDonaldland. Hahahahaha. Gotta love the Kroffts.
Speaking of the Kroffts, I was surprised with the wonderful mentions of Isis and Wonder Woman that Natalie didn't also show the Krofft Bros' Electra Woman and Dyna Girl, which ran during the same period between those other two shows. Young girls had a surprisingly large amount of superheroine role models on television in the 70s!

I've been thinking a lot lately about the younger generations of kids who were taught to read by recognizing whole words instead of breaking them down into syllables and sounds, prefixes and suffixes, and what a disservice that educational fad did to them. A simple little exercise like this, besides being a bit of fun, really helps you think about how words are put together.
I had aunts that were identical twins who taught kindergarten from the 1940s to the 1980s. When I started school in 1974, they were starting to use inflatable letter people in the classrooms. Because I was their nephew, I got the job of inflating the letter people. It was a noble cause.
ABSOLUTELY!!!! You had to wake up very early in the morning to see it though. It was on at 5am on local television in the NY/NJ area. We would watch it as we got ready for school bus to pick us at 6am!! I think it replaced Captain Kangaroo.
I lived in small-town SE Colorado. *New Zoo Review* was a ~huge~ thing, for sone reason... so much so that they would bring a TV set into one classroom (my 3rd grade classroom was chosen! hee! ), the other classes would file in, and we'd watch the episode together. I think that was done for only the first 1-3 episodes, and we'd later discuss it in class, but it was exciting at the time.

My sister was crazy about Shaun Cassidy. Our older cousin took us to a concert in the late 70s. We had the silk hats and jackets. It was my very first concert, even though I preferred his half-brother David because I was obsessed with The Partridge Family. I also preferred Parker Stevenson over Shaun Cassidy in the Hardy Boys show.
I was born in 67. And I remember when 6 Million Dollar Man came out on tv. And EVERY SINGLE KID in my school all played pretend to be Steve Austin. We all ran in slow motion. You've just showcased a big part of my "formative TV experience." 😁 I watched all of these shows, to one extent or another (i.e. at least *some* episodes of them), except that "Letter People" puppet show, which I'd never heard of, and *The White Shadow,* which I never got into, being as sports-focused as it was. I saw the first episode of *Electric Company,* as the media really hyped its debut. I had a bunch of things wrong when I was born back in 67 and the six million dollar man gave me such hopes. I can hear now but nothing can fix my vision in my left eye, but I can hope.
OMG!!!!! I thought I was the ONLY one BEGGING for a spotlight on Battle Of The Network Stars!! My most vivid memory as 12 year old was being jealous as HELL at Ricky Schroeder (Silver Spoons) because he was on the same relay race team with Melissa Gilbert from Little House on The Prairie- my childhood long crush! Melissa Gilbert fell and sprained her ankle during the race, and the footage of Ricky Schroeder consoling her made my tween self apoplectic with anger and jealousy!! Ha Ha! I was a crazy kid. I would still "hate" watch Silver Spoons, afterwards, though.
I was a bit too young to watch James at 15/16, though I did have a crush later on Lance Kerwin. My nephew James recently turned 15 and I really want to get him to watch the show, though I know it would be useless to try. I did tell him it existed though 😂
I was born in December 1966. I remember all these shows during their original runs. Lots of great memories here. My memory of the 70s is still vivid. I started Kindergarten in Fall of 1971. Still remember it. I have some of these shows on DVD box sets. I remember all the PBS educational shows. Great memories.
The Electric Company FTW as I watched it WHILE I watched Sesame Street when I was in kindergarten. It was one of the sources that helped me read at an early age. Now, I appreciate the show for the music, humor, and production value.
I remember watching James at 15 with my dad, where James was making a dish called Chicken Tar-Tar for his girlfriend. Forty-five years later, my dad and I still reference that dish when we’re joking about a bad meal. 😂
When I was around 4-5, I had a really hard time pronouncing the "SHHHH" sound. The clip you show around 10:10 actually helped me to pronounce the sound correctly. Memory unlocked.
I loved so many of these shows (The Electric Company)! I also remember the episode of "The White Shadow" in which one student got high and jumped off the roof of the school. Scared the you-know-what out of me. 😊
I was born in 1982 and I loved watching "The Bionic Woman" when it came on television. That was one of my favorite live action shows right along with Knight Rider, A-Team and Macgyver in my earliest memories. For years, I had no idea the show was a spin-off.
Yep. 1974 here. I think sometimes you forget the Silent Generation. My parents were born then so no Boomers around here. They loved these shows and brought a lot of them into our home.
You just basically covered my whole childhood. As a latch key Black kid in the 70s, TV was my sanctuary. i watched Electric Company all the time and those little phonic skits improved my vocabulary also. I find it weird that these shows that ran for one season are so prominent in our memories. DC and Marvel is a mess. The character on the was named Captain Marvel and a popular comic book character in the 40s and 50s. At one one point more popular than Superman. There was a lawsuit that bankrupted the company that printed the comic. Marvel created a character called Captain Marvel and copyrighted the name. Later on, DC got the rights to the original Captain Marvel but couldn't feature his name on anything because of the copyright. So they came up with the idea of featuring the name of the wizard he got his powers from, Shazam.
OH MY WORD!!!! Love, Love, LOVED this video. Brought back tons of memories. I’m a 50-something Gen-Xer, so I remember ALL these gems you mentioned. Electric Company, White Shadow, Bionic Woman… absolute classic favorites, but I was shouting with glee when you mentioned my girl Isis!! I loved that show so much. I remember my older sister made me an Isis costume for Halloween using a king size pillowcase and metal canning jar lids that my brother in-law, who was a metal shop teacher, cut into the Isis design. I won the costume contest at school that year. So fun. Good times. Thanks so much for the memories ❤
I saw letter people land maybe twice in the late 80s on PBS. I spent most of my life thinking i imagined it. That song made me perk up faster than a curious puppy
47 here. Your channel is awesome what a trip down memory lane. Thank you for covering HR pufnstuf. At work we call human resources that😂 The younger guys are always asking us why we call it that and then I showed them this and they were like what in the actual F😂😂
Born in 68. This was probably one of the best Gen-X show memories videos I have seen. Most claim to be Gen-X but show alot of TV more familar with older millenials. Can't believe you were only born in 77 but had all the T.V. I remember as a kid.
Isis was so great. I was born 1968 and these shows were really good. Also, Starskey and Hutch was my favorite. I found James at 15 online and rewatched the entire series. Wow such memories. I was young when that came on and could only sneak watching it once in a while.
Loved the video a few shows I did know in this one. As well as some of my favorites like CHIPs and the Rockford Files. I seem to remember that Estrada was off of CHIPs around the same time as Tom Wapat and John Schneider were replaced on the Dukes of Hazzard. I remember as a kid being so mad that my favorite characters had been removed from both shows. Actually looked it up and that is exactly what happened Estrada went on strike in 1982. Coy and Vance ruined the Dukes of Hazzard in Season 5 also 1982.
We did the Letter People curriculum in my Kindergarten class. We had the big inflatable dolls, and the teacher would blow up a new one each week and put it on a shelf thar ran around to the classroom. The "Mr. M Has a Munching Mouth" song still haunts my dreams every now and then. In later grades we would watch whole episodes of The Electric Company in the classroom. I'm pretty sure that was my first introduction to Spider-Man.
Same!! I loved those days with the Letter People it was so fun! I remember Mr. Teeth for the letter T. I loved the Electric Company so much. I remember so many of the skits and my mom still talks about Easy Reader to this day 😂 We watched the show each day in class and wrote down all the words too. I was so hooked I would even do the same when I was at home sick.
I was born in 1974, so I watched most of these shows when I was a kid. I don't think I ever watched the one about the 15 year old kid and his family. Or that basketball show. I had heard of the Puffnstuff show, but I don't remember ever watching it. The rest of these, I remember really enjoying.
I had the Steve Austin doll, and my buddy down the street had Maskatron, with the John Saxon mask. In regards to female superheroes, who remembers Electra Woman and Dyna Girl starring Deidre Hall?
HR Puff n Stuff, Sigmund and the Sea Monsters…..it’s kind of hard to believe there wasn’t some LSD going around. Sid and Marty Krofft also did Land of the Lost. Those sleestack were scary.
There was some real talent behind *Land of the Lost,* though. It was created by David Gerrold, who was also a story editor. Some heavy hitters in the science fiction world wrote scripts (mainly seasons 1 & 2), including Ben Bova, Theodore Sturgeon, Larry Niven, and Norman Spinrad; in addition to Gerrold, there were others from Trekdom, like D.C. Fontana and Walter Koenig.
I had no idea Logan's Run had a TV series - I checked-out that movie numerous times from the library when growing-up. And yes....for us '77 kids....CHIPS was the GOAT!
Yes!!! I loved Battle of the Network Stars. I wish we still did something like that. >:) I totally remember the Electric Company and the old Spiderman show. The Hardy Boys and Nancey Drew Show was a regular in our family. We had nearly the entire Nancy Drew Series. We loved Chips, I had a huge crush on Erik Estrada!! I cant believe wonderwoman was only 3 seasons! It seemed much longer to my childhood recolection. The 6 million dollar man and the Bionic Woman were a much loved show for me. No one I ever talk to remembers it. (I guess they were too young.)
Before "The Electric Company" Morgan Freeman did a lot of stage work off-Broadway for which he won awards. After "TEC " he had minor film roles until "Street Smart" with Christopher Reeve. That breakthrough role got him an Oscar nomination. Surprisingly, when he won an Oscar, it was not, as you might think, for "Driving Miss Daisy" or "The Shawshank Redemption" but "Million Dollar Baby." Also, he played Miss Daisy's driver Hoke on stage before the film. You go, Easy Reader!
As someone born in 1973, only a handful of those shows I remember watching during their first runs. I had a metal Six Million Dollar Man lunchbox when I started kindergarten in 1978, so you know which was one of my favorites.
I watched all of these shows into this day. I still on a Box Set of the $6 million man I was born in 1978 and I remember all of these come back on and syndication. Thanks for doing this. I love the memories coming back to me.
Oh gosh! I forgot about Isis! I remember getting it confused with Wonder Woman for some reason. I was just a little kid at the time. I loved Buck Rogers, but didn't even know there was a second season until about 17 years ago. My local Arizona KPHO Channel 5 never picked up the second season and only aired the first season every Sunday at 5pm, and then Battlestar Galactica at 6pm.
Oldest possible Gen X here, born in January 1965. When I was a kid we had a trampoline in the backyard. My sister and I would jump on the trampoline playing Six Million Dollar Man and Bionic Woman, making the bionic sounds as we jumped as high as we could. Oh, and what about Man From Atlantis starring a pre-Dallas Patrick Duffy? Also we need the rest of the Sid and Marty Krofft canon - The Bugaloos, Dr. Shrinker, Electra Woman and Dynagirl, and so many more!
I loved The Electric Company when I was a kid too. I always love hearing one of the cast members (especially Morgan Freeman) saying "The Electric Company gets its power from the Children's Television Workshop." I also remember the occasional Road Runner cartoon appear on the show too. Seeing the Isis and Shazam! clip reminded me of the number of Saturday morning shows that featured that cheesy, spinning Norm Prescott / Lou Scheimer Productions 'wheel'.
Mark Harmon used to dominate in the BOTNS. One of my favorite moments was the actress profile of Olivia D'Abo where she played the piano and sang "The Rose". Does anyone remember Real People with Sarah Purcell and Skip Stephenson (1979) and The Curse of Dracula mini-series (1979)?
Just discovered your channel a few days ago, I really appreciate the nostalgia you're tapping into. 0:17 I like that you differentiate between "Gen X" and "Xennial", as the kids born between 1965 to 1975 remember some of these TV shows better than those born between 1976 and 1985 (I think "Xennial" ends more around 1983, but eh, it's cool). There are differences. "Gen X" may remember "Battle of the Planets" and "Starblazers", whereas "Xennial" was more into Voltron/Transformers. "Gen X' remembers McDonalds commercials in the early 70's that were more like "HR Puff and Stuff" (nightmare fuel). "Xennials" instead remember the early Happy Meal commercials. I was born in 1976.
On Chips, Robert Pine is the captain. He is also the father of Chris Pine (aka James T. Kirk in the Star Trek reboot movies) Chris also was in the recent Wonder Woman movies.
HR Puff & Stuff used to scare the SHIT outta me! Especially witchypoo! I don’t know why, but I feel like this show and Scooby Doo were always on at my grandparents house
From my heart and my head, I'm Gen-X. I remember weekends our local syndicated channels played all the old school shows, Live action Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, Incredible Hulk, Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys, Chips, Vega$, etc. The only channel I remember watching James at 15 on was A&E way back when they played stuff like that.
The character's name was(until the late 2000's) Captain Marvel. He was initially a Superman ripoff from a small publisher, Fawcett comics. DC sued Fawcett, because Fawcett was broke DC ended up with all of their intellectual property. In the 70's Marvel comics sued DC over the trademark and naming rights over Captain Marvel, eventually when the case was over, DC wasn't allowed to use Captain Marvel as the title of a comic, even though they got to keep the character and let him keep his name, going forward after the lawsuit, any books that featured DC's Captain Marvel had the title of Shazam.
DC didn't get the IP when they sued Fawcett. They just forced them to stop publishing any Captain Marvel comics in 1954. When the trademark lapsed in the 60s, Marvel secured the rights to the name when they made their own Captain Marvel(Mar-Vell) in 1967, and settling with another small comic book company that tried to trademark the name. DC licensed the old Captain Marvel in 1972 from Fawcett to revive the character since superheroes were popular again. That's when Marvel sent as cease and desist letter to stop using the name.
Okay, you've GOT to do a video on famous actors of today who got their start doing tv shows of our youth. Tom Hanks in Bussom Buddies or Eric Estrada from CHiPs and others. That would be a great "We loved them when they started" video.
Yep. DC had it first as kind of a shot at Marvel, and when they let the trademark lapse, Marvel quickly registered it and launched a comic starring the character, leaving DC to have to chang theirs to Shazaam.
Born in '77 🙋 Somehow I remember some of these even though i was way small.... Reruns? I particularly remember loving the Chips intro. Also, i have memories of watching Trapper John MD with my Grandparents. Good times (remember that show?) miss them.
My brother had the Buck Rogers boardgame. I was fascinated by that thing. I only got to play it once. Did HR. Puffnstuff have a movie? I remember one... The Great Space Coaster is one of the bizarre ones I loved. Memories of some of the shows I watched feel like fever dreams.
Wow I hadn't thought about The Great Space Coaster in decades, but as soon as I read your comment the theme song started playing in my head! "No gnus is good gnus with Gary... Gnu!"
My father was born in 1904 and every week he would comment on Larry Wilcox's "nice head of hair." I have James and Hardy Boys on DVD. Yeah, I remember a lot of these shows. But I was too old to enjoy shows like The Electric Company, but not too old to enjoy all the Kroft Shows! The Powers of Matthew Star, The Phoenix, Starlost and Space 1999.
Shazam was a DC property after purchasing the Captain Marvel character. Then Marvel had its own Captain Marvel… over time, DC’s Captain Marvel would be renamed Shazam, and now I’ve gone crosseyed.
❤wow! Born in 1970 some of these shows bring back memories, i popped to hear the Electric Company theme!! Was hoping you'd include the kids show The Big Blue Marble in a future video. I'm loving your videos ❤
My favorite show growing up in the 70's was EMERGENCY
Mine too! I still watch it to this day!
51 y/o here, born in 73. Dude, this is unlocking some deeply buried memories. I remember watching The Electric Company when I was really little.

As a Millennial (born in 1987) who is a fan of media (TV shows, films, music) mainly from the 1950s-1980s, I think your channel is amazing.
I was born in 1982 and I loved watching "The Bionic Woman" when it came on television. That was one of my favorite live action shows right along with Knight Rider, A-Team and Macgyver in my earliest memories. For years, I had no idea the show was a spin-off.
Your channel is so fun and I miss old TV shows.
Yep.
I remember my older sister made me an Isis costume for
Halloween using a king size pillowcase and metal canning jar lids that my brother in-law, who was a metal shop teacher, cut into the Isis design. I won the costume contest at school that year. So fun. Good times.
Thanks so much for the memories ❤
Amazing!
I loved making my own costumes.
I saw letter people land maybe twice in the late 80s on PBS. I spent most of my life thinking i imagined it. That song made me perk up faster than a curious puppy
47 here. Your channel is awesome what a trip down memory lane. Thank you for covering HR pufnstuf. At work we call human resources that😂
The younger guys are always asking us why we call it that and then I showed them this and they were like what in the actual F😂😂
Capital T in a single bound!
Faster than a rolling O!
Born in 68. This was probably one of the best Gen-X show memories videos I have seen. Most claim to be Gen-X but show alot of TV more familar with older millenials. Can't believe you were only born in 77 but had all the T.V. I remember as a kid.
Thank you!
Thank you again, another killer episode. Born in 72 and love what you do.
Electr Woman and Dyna girl were cool and so was Isis
Sounds like somebody hasn't yet done a search for ElectraWoman and Dynagirl on here... rest assured they are among us.
This was a solid episode
HR Puff n Stuff, Sigmund and the Sea Monsters…..it’s kind of hard to believe there wasn’t some LSD going around. Sid and Marty Krofft also did Land of the Lost. Those sleestack were scary.
The sleestack were so creepy!!!!
Land of the Lost! I tried watching it again about a month ago. How did I love that show????? 😂😂😂
😂 I'm the same way, so many shows I loved, almost unwatchable now.
But many stood the test of time.
But the sleestack scared the crap out of me back then
There was some real talent behind *Land of the Lost,* though.
For several years, Shaun Cassidy was everywhere. I also remember _South Park_ doing a parody of _Hardy Boys_.
And in the TV Show CHIPS, it also stared Robert Pine. He played their Sergent. He is the father of Chris Pine.
My copy of the complete Grizzly Adam’s came last week, looking forward to watching this with my children
I was born in 1966 and I remember Shows from the 1970s& the 1980s fondly ❤😊
Same, but had my first kid at 20, so I sometimes conflag my genx shows with his milennial ones.
Born in 1989, but loved watching The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries. I was told that Emergency was another popular show back then as well.
Ah, the shows of my childhood. Great memories!! Thank you!
The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams - another show with a Family Guy link.
The 70's had so many great shows. It was tough in a one TV house to always watch your favorite shows.
Loved this episode! So many shows I forgot about but remembered right away from just the theme songs.
Great video. I was an 80’s kid but I definitely watched some re runs of all of these!
Born 1965 to depression era parents. My big OMG coming of age influence was the movie Grease
The harshest punishment in our household was room arrest without tv and stereo, missing the favorite shows.
The man from Atlantis anyone ?
Xennial apparently ends at 83, but I amended it! Lol. The line is a bit blurry.
I absolutely loved The Electric Company! I grew up with the re runs
On Chips, Robert Pine is the captain. He is also the father of Chris Pine (aka James T. Kirk in the Star Trek reboot movies) Chris also was in the recent Wonder Woman movies.
This was Spot-On and brought back many happy memories.
HR Puff & Stuff used to scare the SHIT outta me! Especially witchypoo! I don’t know why, but I feel like this show and Scooby Doo were always on at my grandparents house
Good Stuff! I remember them all! 😊
I used to get so excited to watch Battle Of The Network Stars just to see the Tug O War.
There are episodes on youtube
Dc and marvel both have characters named captain marvel. Marvel now owns the captain marvel name, so dc's captain marvel goes by Shazam.
Yep. DC had it first as kind of a shot at Marvel, and when they let the trademark lapse, Marvel quickly registered it and launched a comic starring the character, leaving DC to have to chang theirs to Shazaam.
HR Puff n Stuff, makes me so happy ❤
Oh yeah! The electric company!
My dad was an exec for Members Only (Europe Craft Imports) ❤ I had a few! I thought I was so cool 😂
I still have PTSD from that creepy Freddy the Flute.
Born in '77
🙋
Somehow I remember some of these even though i was way small.... Reruns? I particularly remember loving the Chips intro. Also, i have memories of watching Trapper John MD with my Grandparents. Good times (remember that show?) miss them.
Omg every single theme song unlocked old memories 😭 ❤
God I love this channel!
Gnu!"
@melodiemeldrum3918 🤣
As I remember, there was also James At 16, so there must have been another season. I was only 11, but I really liked it.
They actually changed the name of the show mid-season, when James turned 16.
@@marieclapdorp2580 OK, that explains it. Seems like no one remembers that show.
@@joeschmo2693I remember too
@@pauliewogmastercertifiedli535 He had that photographer scam going and it got him a Swedish girl.
Thank you...glad I found your channel. Such good memories.
Shazam was a DC property after purchasing the Captain Marvel character. Then Marvel had its own Captain Marvel… over time, DC’s Captain Marvel would be renamed Shazam, and now I’ve gone crosseyed.
😂😂😂 but you got it right.
I used to love Battle of the Network Stars!
I loved and miss battle of the network stars. Well I miss it now. I didn't remeber it before I saw this video.
❤wow! Born in 1970 some of these shows bring back memories, i popped to hear the Electric Company theme!! Was hoping you'd include the kids show The Big Blue Marble in a future video. I'm loving your videos ❤
I was one of those pre-teens with Shaun Cassidy hanging on my wall. I was 8. 😂😂
Ditto ! David who ?
@bethking1682 😂
