    I went into my shop mad last week and sliced the end of my thumb off. It was enough of the end that it is more of a bad cut but that's not really the point. I had an old sailor tell me once that: "the second you stop respecting the water, it'll kill you." I was reminded of that as I was squeezing my thumb to stop bleeding. Came back to watch this video, seems I was here a year ago. Thanks again for the videos.

      Cheers mate... Sliced the tip of my middle finger off a few days ago. Superglue was keeping me working that day. Bad emotions and mental exhaustion from online interactions and idea theft had me in a bad place and the tools didn't forgive me that. Good reminder. Thanks for sharing.

    Hi, I am new to spoon carving. I’m a French Canadian from the Montreal area and would like to say I know how you feel about the English language but you should be proud of yourself as your English is very good and far better than the German of most of your viewers. Personally, that video arrives at the right time because it tells me I am going in the right direction. I, consciously, was trying to use my axe with more confidence and to work faster, not for the gain of time but to get a better result. I was doing so because I noticed it in your videos, in the way you are working. I want to find a hobby for when I will retire (even if I still have 9 years to go) and I picked spoon carving because I love the idea of creating beautiful lines and curves that are parts of the day to day life. At the beginning of that journey, it is great to have a guide that offers his wisdom, his art and his doubt to remind us that the journey never ends. Thank you for your generosity, your message counts.

    I have found when I carve, I use carver tape...it really has saved my fingers a lot, especially my thumbs..and yeah, I have cut mine pretty deep a few times too! So, take care, and carve safe! Keep up all your great work. I know many in Quebec who love to carve too, and here in western Canada not so much, but, it's growing:) Cheers buddy! Really nice work! And your French accent is just great!:)

    English bloke here... Max, your English pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary is excellent, not horrible in the slightest. We have so many regional accents here in the uk that your concern over Bold vs Bald is nothing to worry about. There are larger differences in pronunciation within the UK's many regional accents, including Bold and Bald. You're a credit to the field of multilingual humans and us carvers. Do your thing, ignore the unhelpful nasty critics.

    First off.... NEVER apologize for your accent. You are speaking a language that is not your mother tongue. People who have trouble understanding you because they aren't used to hearing people other than their own first language people speak. There are times that I struggle to understand people using English as an additional language, but it's because I haven't had enough exposure to their native accents. I will use the CC option to help me. Thank you for your channel, it's helping me learn something I'm very interested in.

    Screw them all your an amazing artist and your craftsmanship is simply excellent.

      Much obliged mate! I'm still working on dealing with the social part of social media... Well... With the media part too I guess. Your words really hit home! I'm truly grateful to receive wholeheartedly kind messages like that from folk I never connected to personally, yet had the opportunity to reach. I won't take that for granted! Welsh culture is as intriguing to me as all independent, somewhat isolated societies out there and your language and craft has led to a fine tool I just happened to review in my latest video! I thank you again for taking the time to write this comment. It means a lot... Making these videos and keeping up crafting as I travel from continent to continent has taken its toll and knowing that my message reaches people out there makes it up a bit at a time. Cheers Maximilian

    Good comments! I think knowing your form and muscle memory also helps enormously, developing that 3D consciousness. Then you can get into a flow especially if your doing a little batch. That has helped me to become more confident definitely!
    I think in the UK people struggle with axes to begin with (or any tool with an "sharp edge") because of the relentless media obsession with presenting such things as "dangerous weapons"

    • @woodsmansfinest3814

      Sure thing. wasn´t meant to be a complete guide, but i´d argue that motor programms (muscle memory) is going hand in hand. I´d even say, they are a major nerological component of the emotion of boldness.cheers

    • @GOLDSMITHEXILE
      @GOLDSMITHEXILE 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Who said it was just a hobby!
      Its a tried and proven method (even though "art schools" don't bother with it any more) to develop sound awareness of form, and to develop good hand/eye coordination. Like those people who practise drawing perfect circles with an ink brush, that type of thing....Its away to sharpen and develop those motor skills, keeping that part of you "fit" so to speak...drawing doesn't HAVE to be just about making illustrations or pictures (not that theres anything wrong with that of course!)

    • @woodsmansfinest3814
      @woodsmansfinest3814  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GOLDSMITHEXILE nono, I do understand... I'm not really lacking fine motorics... Maybe for people that's interesting, but I believe in learning by doing the thing itself. I've spent year getting distracted by supplementary training for mma and BJJ rather than spending more effort on the mats. Same here... I've spent several years in Japan and so I am aware of the benefits in people's lives since they grow up writing Kanji in amazing speed. It seems to school their minds in more than one way. Interesting point.

    Basics, knowledge and experience (Boldness) is needed for anything in life, Also extremely sharp, quality and durable tools. But I feel like you missed out on one major factor for anyone that is beginner and wants to start carving is the type of wood to use. Pear wood is extremely easy to cut like butter and does not splinter or crack at all almost. Same cannot be said about Apple wood, extremely hard, difficult to cut but also does not splinter or crack easily, big difference in learning curve if working on one or the other type of wood.

    • @woodsmansfinest3814
      @woodsmansfinest3814  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's why I made a long video on wood types buddy! Gotta browse a little. I also highly disagree. Pear, aswell as apple, damson and other types of fruit bearing woods in the rosaceae family are twisted, got tons of branches and warp a lot during the drying process. Finishing cuts on them are challenging and great sharpening skills are needed. I always recommend birch and the like for starters. I'm not sure you understood the point of the video. Hairsplitting seldomly helps and people with lots of experience in the field usually don't feel the need for it. This video is targeting a mental aspect and not a list of mundane things that make carving easier.

    • @kestutisjankunas4272

      @@woodsmansfinest3814 Mental part is part of anything in this world no matter woodworking or anything else in life, that bit i understand. But some inaccurate statements i have to add critic to.
      Do you know Janka? You can check the hardness of the wood and you see whats harder than what, your subjective opinion is just your personal preference...
      From experience and by Janka hardness factor pretty much any softwood is a good choice and start for a beginner however reason why vast majority of experienced woodworkers and crafters suggest pine is due to its wide spread availabillity, just go to your local woods and get a branch for a spoon or buy a 2 by 4 in your local shop, (just dont forget to ask if its pine as many sell fir tree 2 by 4s) otherwise if you yourself or anyone you know has some firewood laying around in the shed, most of it is usually birch but they might have pine and/or fir as wel.
