The grouse was responding to your " drumming" on that stump .... You are demonstrating the grouse's mating ritual. I have watched them doing that. Thank you for the video ... I have some huckleberry wood that I am going to make a spoon with.
Brother Dave Canterbury!! The good lord has blessed you with an amazing gift!! Thank you so much for teaching us and sharing with us your gift!! Absolutely love your channel!! All my gear is self reliance outfitters!!
Another great video and a wonderful addition to skills. Thanks for including the tip about spoon bowl depth. I've watched many spin carvers over the years, and you're the first to add that bit of wisdom.
I read and have all your books I just wanna say thank you for sharing so much knowledge through all these years even though I don't know you you have a special place in my heart
Hah! What a fun time! I had so much fun watching this and learned some great new information on how to do this, especially with an axe! I had no idea that was possible. Thank you David!
Some great axe, knife, and material dexterity tips in there. I've carved a few spoons already but, as usual with your videos, I've learned something new. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and wisdom.
That was awesome Dave thanks! As far as the length of the video well I'll tell you what it doesn't matter how long it takes as long as I'm learning something I'll sit there for 2 hours if it takes that to learn something or to refresh my memory. I generally watch every one of your videos but I don't always comment on all of them. I'm starting to get a little older now and it's getting harder and harder to stay out as long as I would like to but I ain't going to lay down till they put me in the ground, well not necessarily put me in the ground because I'm going to be burnt I do not want all that dirt on top of me. Thanks again Dave I really did enjoy this!
I am new to spoon carving and really enjoyed this video. It was informative and each step explained very well. The length was just right. I love nature and the partridge showing up looking for a mate was nature at its best. Having your cat come to show you his love and support was a perfect addition to the video. Thank you for sharing and I look forward to what comes next. Have a great week! 😊🇨🇦
Thank you sir. Thank you for putting out teaching videos. I know your skills are a source of income for you and your family and I very much appreciate your sharing of your skills for us on TH-cam.
Your seminar was very informative. Never tried carving a spoon yet, but you gave me good ideas that I can use. PS. The entertainment gave me a good laugh. I know how cats are, they have to be noticed one way or another.
Another awesome video Dave! Absolutely loved it and it was not long or at least long enough for me. I did have one question though. Do you use the spoon as is or do you seal it or something when you are done carving it?
Thanks for the video! You made the whole process so easy to understand . My next's outdoor adventure I will make one. My first attempt was on a piece of Aspen. It turned out all right, but it's not very strong.
Brother Canterbury. I spotted a tattoo you have on the right hand. Im happy to see you are a brother of the craft. I used to shoot OSTA back in the late 90s and i know you were there at the time. Back when Hoot was the president. I've followed you for years and before your stint on TV. But now that i saw the tattoo many things makes sense and explain a lot about who you are. /G\
😊thanks Dave, nice work and great guest😅 I started making spoons the beginning of 2021, I learn new things every day, another 6/7 years I’ll be a spoon maker. Is making spoons bushcraft? Well I can tell you that 4 times I either forgot my utensils or I accidentally burned them and had to make utensils in the field😮😢 making utensils in the field is bushcraft when done on the spot 😊take care.
I love the video! I love the grouse! Hysterical! An your cat had me rolling! I'd love to see someone carve one with their belt knife only! Carving bowl/spoon/concavity with a wide blade is difficult! Not impossible but skills are needed!
Great seminar, Dave. The cat and the quail added to the show. Appreciate the video. Very helpful tips. I've been trying to carve a decent spoon for some time now.🥄😺👍🏻
Could I take this a tad further by drilling a small hole in the handle with a reamer? Just so I can add a small loop made of either No. 36 bank line or thin strip of leather. Also, how do I go about preserving the spoon or other wooden kitchen tool for long term/daily use?
Dave, you nailed the ONLY issue I had with my 1st wooden spoon. It was too deep. Well,... a bit too thick too I reckon. But after some practice I got it. Nice tutorial along with some foul entertainment. Lol. Happy Easter Buddy.
Hah! Crazy timing- I just finished carving the strangest eating spoon of my life, about a half hour ago. In cherry. But it was intentionally strange. I'm putting up an April Fool's short of the carving, on Monday, for any Future People who may want to see the weird spoon. Been loving your stuff for years, DC; I hope to run into you at Blade Show again, one of these years. 👍 👍
I’ve been using Black Walnut lately due to availability. It has a beautiful finish but learned a lesson with Walnut though, Walnut branches have a pith that’s super soft. First spoon i carved had a hole in the bowl where the pith was. 😅 Made a decent coffee bean spoon. Thanks Dave!
Dave, this is some practical fun whittling. When I think of a single spoon, I think of the one that the late Army Colonel David Hackworth, he of the 10 Silver Stars, always carried in a shirt pocket. A tool for obtaining various meals "on the run." Your rounding blade is definitely helpful for hollowing. I have considered an equine hoof knife for such carving, but I think the blade needs some modification for ideal spoon shaping. You mention birch, echoing my thoughts about an ideal spoon wood. Lots of that in the Yukon Territory in many places, & Alaska, too. Hard, smoothing, & often durable. Wondering of the cat considered adopting the possibly orphaned bird (was it a Ringneck pullet?).
Man that's so cool ,I was processing fatwood and doing some carving with my axe and a grouse came up within 10 ft if me and was watching me ,I think it was attracted to the noise....
We don't have birch or maple here. But we do have a native holy that has a very tight clear grain .also very hard ! And it light after it dries . Also makes very good handles ...
Question: is there a reason why you use a hatchet and a small knife vs using two knives (one large and one small)? Is it personal preference or are there clear advantages to using the hatchet?
It is the rhythmic thump thump of the axe that is calling theat grouse in. I have has them come to the sound of the old small 3 wheelers with the little 4 stroke thump thump thump at idle. Ki d mimics the male "Drumming "
The demo was excellent! The time with the partridge & the cat is priceless!......ATB

Hi David! I enjoyed the full demonstration as well as the extra entertainment provided by other members of your "crew."
Gottcha a new friend Dave! That is awesome! I've had critters do that to me before. I think they know the peace in your heart.
Another great video and a wonderful addition to skills.

The chopping mimics, the drumming that they do during mating season

enjoyed my coffee this morning watching your carving class.

The Grose was friendly it seems. I like carving as well too. Keep up the good work and God bless

Awesome Video Dave! May you advise how to best preserve the spoon, I heard mineral oil or beeswax are possibilities, thanks Dave!
Top shelf Dave! I’m beginning to gather tools and knowledge. You sir are a great attribute. Thank you!
Outstanding video, Dave. This is where your experience and teaching skills really shine. Great job.
Mr Canterbury, This was a pleasant video to listen to. Cheers.
Thank you sir. Thank you for putting out teaching videos. I know your skills are a source of income for you and your family and I very much appreciate your sharing of your skills for us on TH-cam.
Thanks Dave. This was a great tutorial!
The length was fine. Thanks for another excellent video Dave!
Brother, that was an awesome video to watch. The grouse was amazing also !!! Wow 👌 THANKS. ...Alan 🇨🇱
Your seminar was very informative. Never tried carving a spoon yet, but you gave me good ideas that I can use. PS. The entertainment gave me a good laugh. I know how cats are, they have to be noticed one way or another.
Great video Dave, thank you
Wonderful demonstration of the variety of sharp-and-pointy-things techniques! ❤
Excellent Class! Thank you
This was a terrific video. Thank you for creating content for as long as you have. I hope you can continue to do so for a very long time.
Hey Dave just finished Advanced Bushcraft. Big fan, thanks for the content!
Awesome video and I love seeing how do do this sort of thing with very few tools. Thanks.
Excellent Instruction , enjoyed seeing good Bushcraft .
Another awesome video Dave! Absolutely loved it and it was not long or at least long enough for me. I did have one question though. Do you use the spoon as is or do you seal it or something when you are done carving it?
Thank you, Dave . That was a very good tutorial 👌
Luv this vid Dave. I enjoyed the tutorial, but I especially enjoyed the critter cat photo bombs!
Thanks for the video! You made the whole process so easy to understand . My next's outdoor adventure I will make one. My first attempt was on a piece of Aspen. It turned out all right, but it's not very strong.
So much love and respect for you Dave!

This was good, Dave! Thank you!
Wow! Great instructive video! I have it saved in my files. The grouse and cat were an added bonus.
Thanks for another great video. I just cut a few pieces of wood last week for spoon carving.
Very nicely done.
Very nice tutorial. Thank you.
Thank you Dave. That was very informative. I have never owned a curved knife. I have to wonder how that is sharpened?
Great video brother. Thanks for sharing
Another awesome video as always and it's all good
Awesome video!!!!

I know it just make a spoon but That is one of best video you have done
Brother, great vid. Can't wait to share it with my kids.
Great video btw. 👍🤙
Super cool with the grouse - hard to beat that
That was awesome!!
good stuff, well done Dave
Super helpful with lots of good tips. Do you think that the grouse escaped from a farm?
Great video Dave but my favorite parts where when you interacted with the animals! Haha! It's great!
Love your content as always. Thanks for the video
What’s your recommendation on sharpening a hook knife?
Very informative and entertaining
Great Lesson Dave 🤟😜👍
Great video thank you
Nicely done!✅

Excellent tutorial brother. That was great timing with that grouse! I hope it doesn’t develop any trust with Zahn like it has with you!
Thanks Dave
Talk about realism. Dave gets nature to contribute ambiance for his videos! That's how good DAVE is. 😂😂
Gotta try this one. I was just thinking about doing this the other day. 🎉
Great Stuff!!!
Nice work

Good one 👍. Hand strength may be an issue for the average student. Ever thought of recommending a month of hand exercise before class?
Your feline and avion crew members made a great video even better. Thanks Dave!
Very interesting techniques, never would of thought of using an axe to make a spoon. Ye, enjoyable video. Thank you.
Man that's so cool ,I was processing fatwood and doing some carving with my axe and a grouse came up within 10 ft if me and was watching me ,I think it was attracted to the noise....
Great video as usual, and the added grouse whispering!
Thank you
I must have missed it... WHAT HAPPENED??
We don't have birch or maple here. But we do have a native holy that has a very tight clear grain .also very hard ! And it light after it dries . Also makes very good handles ...
i loved this video can you do a coffee scoop next please i always wanted to make my own scoop
Everyone loves Dave, even the fowl. Hey, I didn’t realize you were a Freemason. 🎉
Thanks!
I've carved a spoon or two and so forth, but I understand the basic technique better now.
Thanks Dave, may I know the brand of the hook knive?
Question: is there a reason why you use a hatchet and a small knife vs using two knives (one large and one small)? Is it personal preference or are there clear advantages to using the hatchet?
Ty, Dave
Very nice 😊
I stayed for the cat. You should put a go pro on him and let him run around all day. Nice spoon. Hi from Wisconsin
I don't mind the length, it was a great vid.
That is one sweet pointy blade, Dave. I missed the maker if you made mention.
It is the rhythmic thump thump of the axe that is calling theat grouse in. I have has them come to the sound of the old small 3 wheelers with the little 4 stroke thump thump thump at idle. Ki d mimics the male "Drumming "
Oh that grouse is the damnedest thing I’ve seen in awhile! 🥰
Awesome spoon 🤗
The ax chops sound similar to the grouse. It's the little things that keep you videos entertaining but still very informative.
