Errol Brown (lead singer) did so much for charity. He was such a great man. He was also awarded the Ivor Novella Award in 2004, for his outstanding contribution to British music. ❤🇬🇧

I am so glad you also played this original Hot Chocolate version of Brother Louie. As I said in my comment to you about The Stories version, they only showed one side of the situation. Hot Chocolate explained BOTH sides. Whats also good, is that in Hot Chocolate there was a mix of black and white performers, making the song even more relevant.

Hot Chocolate are one of only three acts (and the only band) to have at least one British hit (top 50) in every year of the 1970s. They actually achieved this feat in every year from 1970 to 1984. The other acts were Elvis Presley (1956 to 1984) and Diana Ross (1967 to 1984).

I don't know how I missed this. You've discovered Hot Chocolate. Back in the day I didn't care for Disco until I heard these guys. I saw them in L.A. and it was phenomenal! Errol, lead singer, was awesome. He moved around that stage like he was floating. During one song, the bassist sang for a bit. Errol gestured to 4 young ladies in the audience, they came up and all 5 , arm in arm danced like one unit. It was mind blowing, no way it was rehearsed. I hadn't thought about that for so many years. Memory lane is best when shared!

Oh no he dint….. yes he did ! 😆 Hot Chocolate we’re a mixed race band from early to late 70’s in uk , everyone’s a winner was a peach that they did . They were happy to challenge race issues and were a well loved outfit in our country and abroad.

Grew up believing this song was by the Stories. Just recently learned it was a Hot Chocolate song first. This was my first listen and was very happy it was shared with Shawn and Mel.
You're right Mel, this was raw. Much more power behind the reality with the spoken parts when the lady took Louie to meet her family and ran into harsh rejection, then Louie took the lady to meet his folks and again, harsh rejection. Some people had to loose family to follow their heart. This version got to my emotions a bit. Well done Hot Chocolate. Great reaction Shawn and Mel.

Thanks for the critique. I lived this "stories" back in the late 70's. The intolerance drove me into being a runaway for a handful of years. My family threw me to the dogs, as did hers, and our life together spiraled out of control. All because of whom we loved. It all ended in a train wreck. These scars have never completely healed, but I'm learning to "process." And I have a wonderful daughter conceived in LOVE.

I saw this band 'live' at a Christmas dance in a small town in northern Englad, probably mid1970s. I think the hits had dried up by then but they were still a big attraction in a small town ! Errol Brown (the lead singer) was a bit of a sex symbol in the UK

Great reaction. Hot chocolate here try to explain that discrimination can cut both ways. This is very deliberate. Sometimes If you want to get a message out, the best way to do it is to not appear to be picking on one side. A bit like, he who is without sin, cast the first stone.

It wasn't the only time "honky" was used on British TV. The series "Love Thy Neighbour" (more like, "Loathe Thy Neighbour") had the two neighbours (one black, one white) trading insults on a daily basis. No way would such a show go to air today.

I'm glad you guys are reacting to original and more authentic version of the song
The Stories version was very much an edited version (although well performed) of the lyrics and left out much of the meaning of the song.
I think this version was probably too controversial for US radio at the time

    • @sharonjensen3016
      @sharonjensen3016 ปีที่แล้ว

I think it was controversial because of the language used in the spoken-word parts: "I don't want no (insert word) in my family." When I was younger, slurs that sounded like insults stung, now I just think: "I know what that's about." You just can't change some people. They're set in their ways.

I am white British, i met my wife in 1990 who is also white. her mother met a Jamaican man two years later. They married and had a great life together until my mother-in-law passed in 2020. Due to Covid lockdown here the UK, only 6 people allowed in church for her funeral. So my father-in-law along with his family organised an outdoor, in the cemetery Jamaican funeral. Her favourite reggae songs blasting out of massive speakers. Well over a hundred jamaican and West Indian wonderful people we had never met attended. Food, music, dancing. Amos gave her a great send off. He was there when our children were born and they have always called him grandad. Now in his 70s with ill health, we look after him. Yam, curried goat, peas & rice, dumplings, yes I love it all. The only downside to Amos is, he can drink lol”. That Ray nephew’s (Jamaican Rum) is leathal. RIP JENNY.

This was a social commentary song from 50 years ago. There was a lot of prejudice against interracial relationships back then. Unfortunately, it's still the case amongst different ethnic & religious groups today; especially, among Asiatic groups. I've heard stories from other Chinese American friends that their fathers would disown them if they didn't date or marry within the race. The same with some Korean & Japanese families, as well as, in some Jewish, Asian Indian, & Muslim Arabic families.

The connotations of the song are sad because at the time that was the ignorant mindset of a lot of people.
But Honky and Spook? Lol I couldn't care less if anyone with dark skin called me that, in fact I would probably laugh my ass of because it's funny to me.
What the issue is, is that people nowadays are offended at everything, a nick name is just that, a name, it's the inflection and intent behind the way that it's said that is offensive if said in an offensive way / tone, otherwise it is a term of endearment and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
I'm Scottish and I always get called Jock by non Scottish people, doesn't bother me one jot.
