Hot chocolate are one of the most underrated groups of all time. Theyre a UK group that covered every genre in their music. Few have ever fused so many sounds. Errol brown(RIP) was one of the greatest singers. Theyre most famous for the YOU SEXY THING(I believe in miracles) song which is a classic

Lead singer Lester Errol Brown (12 November 1943 - 6 May 2015) was a British-Jamaican singer and songwriter, best known as the frontman of the soul and funk band Hot Chocolate. In 2004, Brown received the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music.

Growing up white and in Canada I'd always believed *The Stories* were the first to record this song. This version is so different - *loved it!* Live and Learn, thanks Guys.
Would also love me some *"You Sexy Thing"*

Hot Chocolate was a British group with a mix of black and white members. Error Brown was the lead singer. He passed away a couple of years ago. I saw the live in the the mid 70s. Ive not heard the Stories version, but this was the original written and sung by Errol Brown and Tony Wilson

Yoo my song! As a young 5 year old boy in the early 70s I remember falling in love with this song simply for my name, but as the years went by and I heard all the words I realized it fit me perfectly😁

Louie original was done by what you just heard Hot Chocolate. Remake by the stories they took out the controversial lyrics when they said Honky and Spook and it was a number one hit.

"Brother Louie" is a song about an interracial love affair between a white man and a black woman, and the subsequent rejection of both by their parents because of it. The title was written and sung by Errol Brown and Tony Wilson of the group Hot Chocolate in 1973. "Brother Louie" was covered by the American band Stories (featuring singer Ian Lloyd) about six months after Hot Chocolate's UK hit.

I came home from the Vietnam War in 1970 .. as a white dude my girlfriend was black .. her mother and grandmother told me to stay away but we still saw each other .. this stuff was real back then

  • @lewistasso8866
    @lewistasso8866 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Oh my goodness. This brings back memories. As a toddler, I was blessed to be able to live next door to my grandmother's home. Unfortunately, my older brother use to love to stay there...alone. So, what did my brother do? He would tease me until I cried and went back home. How? I can still hear him repeat the line of this song: "Louie, Louie, Louie," etc, etc. It's funny now, but in the early 70s, I cried! 😁

I love both versions. I like the Stories version with lead singer Ian Loyds voice kinda sounds like Rod Stewart. I prefer Hot Chocolates version way more musical and way more funk to it everyone has there own preferences. Over just a really cool song that makes you groove.

.Yes , The song “Brother Louie” was written by Errol Brown and Tony Wilson of the Group Hot Chocolate and is the Original .. Like I said above the Version/Cover of the song by The Stories is the better Cover/ Version IMHO … The Hot Chocolate song in the UK reached No 7 on the charts … The Stories (Ian Lloyd Vocals) Cover release in the US reached No 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was more of a commercial success …

Ooh in the 70s if a black boy talked to a white girl in my neighborhood the black girls would target her for endless beatings . We all understood that if we fell for anyone outside of our circle you were on your own. Of course couple by couple one baby after the next it got easier, but it was crazy hard. It’s not great now but you can’t really understand how much it’s changed ☮️

  • @tonydelapa1911

It was more than an unwritten rule. Until I was 8 years old (1967) marrying outside one;s race was punishable by one year in prison (for both people) in Virginia. The Lovings (quite an ironic last name given the charges) were convicted and sentence in 1958.
At the time the US Supreme Court took up this case, it was still illegal to join in a mixed race marriage in 16 states. In a rare unanimous vote of 9-0 the court over-ruled these laws for the entire country. Through the centuries, of course, blacks and whites produced many children - often enslaved black with white owners or masters - I cringe to even type those words. Some states held that “even one drop of black blood” in a person’s heritage made them “colored” in the eyes of the law.
I’m 63 and white. My adult kids absolutely cannot believe many things that happened and changed during my lifetime. Clearly, there is more to do.

To redress the balance in the comments, IMHO, The Stories cover of this is appalling. I takes a sophisticated arrangement strips it down and completely loses any soul. The drumming is too high in the mix. The lead singing by Ian Lloyd is particularly bad. His forcing of the lyrics grates especially against the smooth delivery of Errol Brown. Sometimes covers work, this time it doesn't.

Nearly every social paradigm that changes needs trailblazers spearheading them. People who can withstand the slings and arrows and brave enough to send the message knowing full well the backlash that awaits them. Normally we compare versions, but in this case we have a black band and a white band putting it out there and I can't think of a thing more appropriate. Hot Chocolate wasn't pulling their punches in a very tumultuous era.
