It was a term from the hippie movement which basically claimed we are all brothers, I still have a few friends who use 'brother' in that context.

It tells the story from both sides and in greater detail. It makes more sense when it concludes "ain't no difference if you're black or white". Yes, I suggested this tune a while back. I wholeheartedly agree with the message of the song: it does not matter if you are black or white. Very accurate and simple. Maybe I am stupid, but I never saw the sense in judging someone or treating them different based only on skin color. Makes no sense.
This tune also reminds me of the TV series “SOAP”. SOAP was canceled because it was too controversial at the time. Part of that controversy, was a white man, Danny, living with a black woman, Polly.
