Whoops! Just noticed a bug in this video. I've recently moved the apartment building to be more centered on the middle portion of the island, so when the camera zoomed into a window to preview the islanders apartment, it was a little off! I'm fixing it now. 🎉
Several small comments 1. Memories are a perfect feature for data hungry nerds such as myself 2. Fredbook is such a goofy little bonus, I love it. Best comparison I can make is Judgement Bay. 3. The personality variety is *far* more pronounced than it was in Tomodachi, which is fantastic since I always thought Tomodachi Miis acted virtually indistinguishable from eachother 4. The islander deletion cutscene feels like it was made specifically for people doing stuff like the Survivor portion of Vinny's Tomodachi Life series which makes it a very nice touch 5. Predicting that the hydraulic press at the end is going to be one of the dream scenes 6. How on earth do travelers work exactly?
This looks really good, omg?? The last time I checked on this game was around a year ago, and so much has changed since then! It's got soooo much promise, I'm really looking forward to the full release!
This looks great keep up the good work The only 2 nitpicks I have is I miss the TTS voices, and I wish the preview would appear as the cursor is hovering over rather than having to hit a whole other button for it. Also the fishing minigame looks pretty confusing Everything else looks like it is going to plan

I can see that you guys have made a lot of progress since I subbed in the winter! I’m a bit worried about how harsh and barren the island itself looks (the rocks not having vegetation on them for example), although Tim assuming detail work for the outside will be done later on. I found you guys less than a month ago and downloaded the demo- what the heck there's SO much progress already!!! I'm so excited for this, I love how you've gone about the whole Tomodachi Life fan game and still made it it's own thing with its own unique features and art style. I can totally see young kids playing this game and it becoming just as special as Tomodachi was for me in the future.
Thank you. We're working as hard as we can on this. We started in 2022 but rebooted everything from the ground up in 2023 because it didn't match our style we wanted. I'm so happy with the current product in 2024.

We've already put way too much effort in it to abandon it and cancel the project. When we rebooted it a year ago and recreated everything from the ground up, I was considering canceling the project. But we stuck it through and now, here we are! With a better, and more visually impressive version than our old one.

Very solid so far!! My biggest complaint is that the animations are usually either too long or too elaborate. For the friend cutscene especially, I feel like I would start to get really tired of seeing the friendship cutscene because it would take so long to happen. The phone menu also could just be a simple slide up transition instead of the elaborate animation that's used. Otherwise I think it's very solid looking so far!! Keep up the good work 💜

Tho it is very rough around the edges and needs some serious clean up. > The edges and corners on the UI look very messy with the white and light pink portions + the sudden color shift, I think a consistent edge would look better unless there's a reason to break it, like you do in the island overview to separate season and day. > the pier and boat in that island overview is extremely disproportionate! > The sky really needs some texture. > The camera angle when talking to the characters is extremely akward and flat, the FOV should be smaller, the camera should be positioned slightly higher and tweaked, and the characters should be at a random position/rotation to bring in variety. > Does the game have any post-processing effects? The shading feels bland because the color balance is very bright, but I think unity's post processing can handle making the lighting more dynamic and professional. I think this is why people say the art style is bland: the shading looks very "default unity". > That said, maybe make default apartments have different wallpapers/floors? That'd easily make the game seem more lively, tho I've seen the apartment customization system is a lot more complex than this specific showcase shows. > The "preview apartment" option is SUPER akward in practice, you should take from tomodachi life here and use the actual windows themselves as the "preview apartment" button, then have the preview of the islander appear smaller over that UI. Half the fun is seeing what your islanders are up to quickly as you pass by the apartments, and losing that would be a huge disappointment for most players. I imagine most other complaints I have will be fixed because they are clearly place holders hehehe, this can be great if done properly, consider me intrigued!
1. I think the UI is fine and nothing really needs to be changed of that. We've worked hard on multiple UI concepts and coming up with this one was honestly the best thing we've done so far. I doubt it'll change. 2. The boat has to be that big in order to see it properly and be able to select it. The island scene doesn't need everything to be 100% consistent as it's basically a HUB for selecting where you want to go and what to do. 3. We are aware of this, but New Day is still in its early stages of development, so it'll change eventually. 4. I don't understand what you mean by this? I think the view for the apartment looks fine and I've never heard a complaint about it before. 5. There are post-processing effects, but they're not heavy. Unity's PPE can cause lag on lower-end systems, which New Day strives to run on. I don't think New Day gives off the vibe of a default unity project, as those tend to use Unity's built-in default shaders. I like a brightly lit, cutesy game. 6. Default apartments are default for a reason. You have to build your own apartment to give to your islanders if you want them to be in something else. You can change the wallpaper/flooring/ceiling textures in the Room Editor and use in-game money to buy them. 7. Tomodachi Life is restricted to 100 miis per island, meaning you can't go above that limit. That's the reason why their preview screen is so quick and easy to look at. New Day can have *unlimited* islanders per island, which is why you have to load into the preview screen in order to actually see what your islanders are doing. If not, then the entire game would lag because of it constantly rendering over 100+ islanders if you choose to have that many. Thank you for the feedback though, as we always want to improve the game. Visually, it'll likely change in the future, but for now we're content with building a fun experience for all. I think some of those complaints are a bit nitpicky and shouldn’t be as prioritized this early. The game is still in really early development and has a pretty small team, so I think all of the progress so far is very promising!
@darkitio TTS is not apart of New Day. That's one of the big differences between us and Tomodachi Life, with it, we might actually get sued... jk lol It was a hard decision to cut TTS from the game as I did wanna include it, but once I realized I'm not making Tomodachi Life 2 and it's my own project, I felt more comfortable using Animalese. That, and TTS is so hard to program to make it sound normal.

Also I was thinking as well on this but will you try adding Steam Deck compatibility at some point because I tried the demo on the Deck and it does run but there’s some control issues that was a little frustrating to figure out at first but just curious if you have any plans to fix it’s controls for Steam Deck
New Day isn't verified for the Steam Deck because we haven't set up anything for it. It's nice that the game runs on it, but until later on in development, we probably won't focus on other ports.
@zalno5876 Technical stuff works in the background. Loading screens are used to smoothly slide between scenes. They don't take long at all, either. Unless you're using the 6 hour speed up time feature. The patreons who have played the game haven't ever complained about loading times.
@@newday7811I think the loading screen is only being perceived as an issue because of how it’s displayed In Tomodachi Life, the loading screens are simple backgrounds with a little pattern In New Day, the loading screens have a big animation and text saying loading Both screens take a short time, around a few seconds, but Tomodachi having a simpler loading screen that is barely recognised as a loading screen makes it seem like less of an issue. New Day having a large animation reminds players of loading, possibly breaking their flow I think you can keep the cute animation for longer load times, but have a more simple one like Tomodachi for the short barely a few second load times
I’m so excited for this! I found out about New Day while looking to see if Nintendo has said anything about a new Tomodachi Life (either a Tomodachi Life 2 or a remake for the switch) and I was not disappointed when I found this instead! I’ll be very happily waiting for it to come out! plus, as someone who uses unique pronouns, I was overjoyed at the custom pronoun options in the demo! thank you so much for this, I’m so excited!!
the art style feels a lil uninspired. the game is very grey, and the characters sort of… meh? the second character we saw was a little more interesting. the 3d pou (???) was very bizarre looking next to the cutesy face character though. it’s also a little strange that the characters arms don’t get thicker with the weight change? keep up the good work and hope things go well!!
@cryingwatercolours8127 The game looks fine imo! It's meant to ressemble a sort of cartoon-like world. The 3D pou is a pet you're going to be able to give to your islanders. The characters are probably meh to you because I don't like to create characters. There's a whole makeup system and etc for players to experience if they wanna spice up the appearance of their islanders a bit, haha. The demo is out on Steam which includes the character creator now! Remember, we're still in our beginning stages of development!

Which parts lack cohesion other than the Pou? The pou is meant to stick out, as it's not from this world. I'm just a little confused. Everything was textured mainly by the same person and it all kinda fits in with each other. Maybe when the games further in development and it releases in EA you'll change your mind, haha! There's a lot I haven't shown.
@newday7811 I understand what they mean, some of the assets look like they're in different styles, and the colour scheme is a little grey. I'm very impressed with all the other aspects though, I'll definitely be adding this to the steam wishlist.
This looks promising, and I would love to help contribute to the project. I'm not a 3d modeler, but I am a student graphic designer and do some sound design and music on the side. Are there any similar positions I could possibly assist in?

i really wish there was a tomodachi life sequel so i'm excited to see this! i look forward to playing it. it's giving me strong wii vibes (not just because of the cursor). i do have a few criticisms. i really, really don't like the sound effect for hovering over something. it's loud and harsh. i didn't get used to it even by the end of the video. i think you should see a preview of an apartment when you select it and a message saying where they are if they're gone, instead of having to click another button. in the town hall, there are too many steps to get to those menu options. if it were me i would put a menu next to toasty with all of the options (including the option to chat with toasty), and the buttons would have text next to them instead of making you hover over them to know what they mean. there's a lot of space for it. a door icon in the bottom left with no text makes me think the button will make you leave. better yet, go straight into toasty's office when you go to the town hall, and make the games a sub-menu/option there. to me, editing rooms and making islanders is a higher priority than the mini-games, so it should take fewer steps to get to those. i think there should be icons to click on in the islander creator for eyes, mouth, etc. instead of arrow keys. the fishing mini-game doesn't sit right with me. the art styles for the fishing rod and the meter don't match and it jumped out at me immediately. it also confused me that the hook goes up and down, especially with the visual of the hook going above the water in the background. with a visible progress meter, it feels like it's missing an element of unpredictability that other fishing mini-games have. i shouldn't know how exactly how close i am to catching a fish. i think the feedback for the moment of catching a fish is missing something. there's no abrupt sound (like a splash, or the ! sound as in pokemon games) or animation. the rod and meter fade out and a fish fades in, and although the fanfare sound is nice, something's missing to connect it all and make me really feel like the fish came from fishing in the water. (edit: i have not played stardew valley. i don't know how these elements compare.) the card roulette game doesn't look fun at all. it's like you took the worst mini-game in tomodachi life and made it long and slow. i would not play it. overall i'm seeing too many steps, slow pacing, and lack of clarity. i had more to say than i thought. i hope it's not too harsh.

Just don't show them online if you don't want anyone to get ahold of that information. New Day, and no other game on steam, will take your files and doxx you with them.
I think a lot of the stuff is just placeholder for now. This game is extremely new and a passion project. I do agree the clipart is a little jarring but those will probably be smoothed out when the full game is released. The devs seem to do a lot to ensure they listen to their fans.

@maglev957 Travelers come to your island by boat, and usually are from "distant islands". They're randomly generated. I love them.

There's a demo out on Steam!
I play on the demo version. When (if) the demo gets updated, will the islanders I have created get deleted? That happened last time and I don't want to waste time making islanders if they're going to die.

Also I was thinking as well on this but will you try adding Steam Deck compatibility at some point because I tried the demo on the Deck and it does run but there’s some control issues that was a little frustrating to figure out at first but just curious if you have any plans to fix it’s controls for Steam Deck
New Day isn't verified for the Steam Deck because we haven't set up anything for it. It's nice that the game runs on it, but until later on in development, we probably won't focus on other ports.
fishing minigame looks very confusing
It's exactly like Stardew.
I'm intrigued by the game, but the fact that there are so many loading screens between nearly everything you do is concerning.
@zalno5876 Technical stuff works in the background. Loading screens are used to smoothly slide between scenes. They don't take long at all, either. Unless you're using the 6 hour speed up time feature.
The patreons who have played the game haven't ever complained about loading times.

In Tomodachi Life, the loading screens are simple backgrounds with a little pattern
In New Day, the loading screens have a big animation and text saying loading
Both screens take a short time, around a few seconds, but Tomodachi having a simpler loading screen that is barely recognised as a loading screen makes it seem like less of an issue. New Day having a large animation reminds players of loading, possibly breaking their flow
I think you can keep the cute animation for longer load times, but have a more simple one like Tomodachi for the short barely a few second load times

I’m so excited for this! I found out about New Day while looking to see if Nintendo has said anything about a new Tomodachi Life (either a Tomodachi Life 2 or a remake for the switch) and I was not disappointed when I found this instead! I’ll be very happily waiting for it to come out!

the art style feels a lil uninspired. the game is very grey, and the characters sort of… meh? the second character we saw was a little more interesting. the 3d pou (???) was very bizarre looking next to the cutesy face character though. it’s also a little strange that the characters arms don’t get thicker with the weight change?

@cryingwatercolours8127 The game looks fine imo! It's meant to ressemble a sort of cartoon-like world. The 3D pou is a pet you're going to be able to give to your islanders.
The characters are probably meh to you because I don't like to create characters. There's a whole makeup system and etc for players to experience if they wanna spice up the appearance of their islanders a bit, haha.
The demo is out on Steam which includes the character creator now! Remember, we're still in our beginning stages of development!

Which parts lack cohesion other than the Pou? The pou is meant to stick out, as it's not from this world. I'm just a little confused. Everything was textured mainly by the same person and it all kinda fits in with each other. Maybe when the games further in development and it releases in EA you'll change your mind, haha! There's a lot I haven't shown.
@newday7811 I understand what they mean, some of the assets look like they're in different styles, and the colour scheme is a little grey. I'm very impressed with all the other aspects though, I'll definitely be adding this to the steam wishlist.
This looks promising, and I would love to help contribute to the project. I'm not a 3d modeler, but I am a student graphic designer and do some sound design and music on the side. Are there any similar positions I could possibly assist in?
@@its_4life At the moment, I'm unsure! We seem to already have all of those spots filled. The only ones we need filled more of are modelers and animators currently!
Will the game have an online feature where you can share islanders and achievements with your friends or with other players?
You can share your islanders by giving your friends your islander file from your PC. Online would be too costly to keep up.

i really wish there was a tomodachi life sequel so i'm excited to see this! i look forward to playing it. it's giving me strong wii vibes (not just because of the cursor). i do have a few criticisms.
i really, really don't like the sound effect for hovering over something. it's loud and harsh. i didn't get used to it even by the end of the video.
i think you should see a preview of an apartment when you select it and a message saying where they are if they're gone, instead of having to click another button.
in the town hall, there are too many steps to get to those menu options. if it were me i would put a menu next to toasty with all of the options (including the option to chat with toasty), and the buttons would have text next to them instead of making you hover over them to know what they mean. there's a lot of space for it. a door icon in the bottom left with no text makes me think the button will make you leave. better yet, go straight into toasty's office when you go to the town hall, and make the games a sub-menu/option there. to me, editing rooms and making islanders is a higher priority than the mini-games, so it should take fewer steps to get to those.
i think there should be icons to click on in the islander creator for eyes, mouth, etc. instead of arrow keys.
the fishing mini-game doesn't sit right with me. the art styles for the fishing rod and the meter don't match and it jumped out at me immediately. it also confused me that the hook goes up and down, especially with the visual of the hook going above the water in the background. with a visible progress meter, it feels like it's missing an element of unpredictability that other fishing mini-games have. i shouldn't know how exactly how close i am to catching a fish. i think the feedback for the moment of catching a fish is missing something. there's no abrupt sound (like a splash, or the ! sound as in pokemon games) or animation. the rod and meter fade out and a fish fades in, and although the fanfare sound is nice, something's missing to connect it all and make me really feel like the fish came from fishing in the water. (edit: i have not played stardew valley. i don't know how these elements compare.)
the card roulette game doesn't look fun at all. it's like you took the worst mini-game in tomodachi life and made it long and slow. i would not play it.
overall i'm seeing too many steps, slow pacing, and lack of clarity. i had more to say than i thought. i hope it's not too harsh.
A lot of these are already changed, like fishing and even the islander creator. This video is really, really, really outdated.

to be fairly honest, the art direction is bleak and a little generic.

Personally, I love the games artstyle.
It's nice, and looks like a cartoon. Just like I want it.
I think a lot of the stuff is just placeholder for now. This game is extremely new and a passion project. I do agree the clipart is a little jarring but those will probably be smoothed out when the full game is released. The devs seem to do a lot to ensure they listen to their fans.
What clipart if I may ask? I'm seriously just tryna figure out what they meant.
