One must immediately forgive Emil Gilels the 2/3 false notes perceptible in the second movement. Emil Gilels has an inimitable pianistic touch. The way of timbre and of bringing out the melodic phrasing is what holds the attention. The melodic line is very expressive, it is what one calls playing deep in the keyboard. It emanates a thickness and a power of play in the emanation of the melody and the harmony which characterizes the immense pianist that was Emil Gilels. Eugen Jochum, as always, has an irreproachable direction.
Concerto pour piano en La mineur Op.16. Grieg composa ce concerto à une époque heureuse de sa vie. En juin 1867, il avait épousé sa cousine Nina Hagerup et il venait de participer à la création d'une société destinée à faire connaître la musique scandinave. L'un des cofondateurs de cette société, Rikard Nordraak soutenait que l'avenir de la musique norvégienne était tout entier dans les traditions populaires du pays.
Il fit une profonde impression sur Grieg, qui devait écrire : "Jamais je n'oublierai notre première rencontre. Mes yeux s'ouvrirent tout d'un coup et je vis soudain dans quelle voie m'engager. Ce n'était pas précisément celle de Nordraak, mais je me rendis compte qu'il m'y conduirait." À partir de ce moment-là, Grieg devint un compositeur nationaliste et le Concerto traduisit sa récente prise de conscience de la richesse du patrimoine populaire norvégien.
Lors de sa publication en 1872, le Concerto en la mineur remporta Immédiatement le succès. Malgré son succès, Grieg n'était pas satisfait de son œuvre et y apporta de nombreuses modifications. Miniaturiste dans l'âme, il n'aimait pas le style symphonique ardemment représenté par Brahms, entre autres, et préférait les structures simples qui mettaient en valeur son remarquable don pour la mélodie. Dans l'adagio élégiaque, Grieg exprime le romantisme de sa nature et son amour des Paysages norvégiens..
Le 19 octobre 1916 venait au monde Emil Gilels qui deviendra l'un des plus grands pianistes du XXème siècle. Un interprète majeur de Beethoven mais également un vibrant interprète de la musique de Grieg, comme le témoigne cet enregistrement public. Emil Gilels distille le phrasé musical en appuyant chaque note, chaque accord, pour en faire ressortir l'ensemble des forces telluriques. Il fait partie de cette classe d’interprètes qui savent faire sonner leur instrument, il joue toujours « au fond se son clavier ».

Merveilleuse interprétation de Gilels,avec Jochum
Indescribably beautiful performance! Deeply, deeply felt, full of undreamed-of poetry. Jochum and Gilels left us the two Brahms concerti in very special performances, and Gilels showed us the hidden rapture in the Grieg lyric pieces he recorded. But this event is the culmination of his artistry. Time seems to stand still, holding its breath, as this unfolds.
Thank you very much. This is my favourite recording of Grieg's concerto.

Wunderschöne und spannende live Aufführung dieses spätromantischen und ethnisch komponierten Konzerts mit klar artikuliertem doch elegantem Klang des technisch perfekten Soloklaviers sowie gut vereinigten und perfekt entsprechenden Tönen der anderen Instrumente. Der letzte Satz klingt echt schön und auch überzeugend. Der intelligente und erfahrene Dirigent leitet das ausgeziechnete Orchester im lebhaften Tempo und mit künstlerisch kntrollierter Dynamik. Wundervoll und atemberaubend zugleich!
My German is quite poor. I understood what you wrote, and have nothing to add, except perhaps a quite specific point. You certaily know that his orchestral technique was considered as quite poor, and when being in France he asked Edouard Lalo to help hm in improving his technique. Nevertheless, listen to the wise use of brasses in the first movement, or the delicious flute in the slow section of the finale (a formal tradition coming directly from Mozart, who gave abolute masterpieces in this style), the orchestral style is obviously mastered. I could write similar opinions about some works of Schumann, Brahms, Franck.

Absolutely fantastic and powerful performance by the Great Gilels. My all time favorite performance is by Michelangeli. His playing of the cadenza from the 1st movement is second to none.

It was a live performance. Mistakes happen. They don't detract from this superb interpretation.
This concerto was very famous and beloved in former USSR. Gillels and Richter were fabulous in their respective renderings. I remember having heard this concerto in Moskow ( I don't remember the name of the soloist, one of these Russian names impossible indeed to remember). The terrific enthusiasm of the audience was in a Mediterranean rather than Russian style.
USSR had its political artistic contradictions .Remember how they tortured "Shosta", Prokofiev, and many others. But in that rigidly communist and morally ultraconservative country, the musical heroe was the deeply monarchist and homosexual Tchaikovski. Needless to say, it was quite forbidden to spek or wroite about this homosexuality, just as about the suspicious cirumstances of his death: Consider the case of the ultraconservative UK: the openly pazcifist andhomosexual Sir Benjamin Britten was ennobled vy the Queen, which was a quite relevant distinction. To come back yo USSR, Britten had deep artistic relationship with "Shosta", "Rostro" and his spouse, who was forbidden to go to UK and create his complex and outstanding "War Requiem".
This is the first Grieg Piano Concerto that does not get me bored.
I have thought this concerto is beautiful but not attractive.
