    “[…] In early 1870 in Rome, Grieg met the great Hungarian pianist and composer, Franz Liszt. During one visit, Grieg presented the score of the A-minor Concerto to Liszt, who played through the work, often shouting his approval. As Grieg related: “Finally, (Liszt) said in a strange, emotional way: ‘Keep on, I tell you. You have what is needed, and don’t let them frighten you.’” Liszt did suggest some changes to the score, finally published in 1872. Grieg was never totally satisfied with the Concerto, and continued to pen revisions until the time of his death. Despite the composer’s misgivings, the Grieg A-minor remains one of the most popular of piano concertos."

    Wow and then thousand Wows!!! This performance in and itself is a priceless jewel. This concerto is my all time favorite and I have listened to hundreds of performances by other artists including, Yuja, Katya, Valentina, etc...This man, ort should I say our gift from Heaven, is beyond excellence in his interpretation without the body language grand standing and unnecessary gimmicks. Thank you a million Nikolai!!!

    • @Vito_Tuxedo
      @Vito_Tuxedo ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Raf Kend - Thank you for pointing out the sheer un-necessity of the distracting body language grandstanding, which has become _de rigueur_ among so many of today's performers, as though such gimmickry somehow make their performances more musical. In truth, more often than not it does precisely the opposite. Bravo to Nikolai Lugansky and the other musicians for such a brilliant integration of soloist and orchestra in this classic masterpiece by Grieg.

      And to think Liszt suggested it be on the trumpet! Grieg accepted at first, but, THANFULLY, it was one of the first things he changed (among the many revisions he made throughout his life). And, I agree, it's a beautiful cello part! Actually, this concerto's second themes are all as gorgeous as the first themes.

    A superb performance and I consider myself fortunate that I saw Lugansky perform this work when I visited London in 2016. However, for me, the broadcast was, again, spoiled by the camerawork. I much prefer to see the pianist, and preferably a side on-view. It's frustrating when you get the shot from the front. He's a pianist for goodness sake so why not show more of the playing. Also I don't need to see the flautist's nostrils or extreme close ups of various brass instruments. It happens with every production no matter who is broadcasting and I end up just closing my eyes and listening to the performance. I may as well have it on radio.
    However, having had my little rant, I'm very grateful that such concerts are posted on this forum. Thank you, Enchanted Warrior. :-)

    Печально, что подавляющее большинство откликов га иностранных языках. Русский пианист играет с русским оркестром под упраалением русского дирижера... Увы, нам не нужна серьезная музыка - даже вв ее вершинных образцах! И меня лично это радует: нам не нужно "просветлять" свои души соприкосновением с Прекрасным, мы ведь в любом случае ПРЯМО В РАЙ, а ОНИ БУДУТ ГОРЕТЬ В АДУ! Это вдохновляет и успокаивает.
    По поводу исполнения музыки. Хочу поблагодарить пианиста за то, что, придерживаясь горовицевских традиций, не помогал своей игре лицом, строя уморительно-эмоциональные рожи. Как же надоела эта гнусная ланг-ланговская манера, увы, подхваченная некоторыми другими "топами" пианистического рейтинга!!
