Lugansky is not only one of the most brilliant pianists in the world but also an immensely beautiful person, rich in culture and spirit! I had the honour to meet him and I have been impressed by his humanity ❤🙏🏻
As a Norwegian who has had this piano concerto as one of my favourites since early childhood, and have listened to it literally hundreds of times from various soloists and orchestras - I must say this russian orchester and Lugansky delivers one of the best interpretations I've ever heard! MASTERFUL!!
Love how he makes the depth of this music "look so easy" but inside you know his feeling is next level. Outstanding rendition of this masterpiece. TOO BAD ABOUT THE DAMN COMMERCIALS....HATE TH-cam.
An epic and tender song of life, in its resilience against death, frost and sadness. Perfect match between Lugansky's internal macrocosmos and the external macrocosmos.
Years ago the Grieg concerto was a laughingstock, but it's as good as any concerto. Lugansky takes a small concerto and makes it big. One of the loveliest middle movements ever.
Wow and then thousand Wows!!! This performance in and itself is a priceless jewel. This concerto is my all time favorite and I have listened to hundreds of performances by other artists including, Yuja, Katya, Valentina, etc...This man, ort should I say our gift from Heaven, is beyond excellence in his interpretation without the body language grand standing and unnecessary gimmicks. Thank you a million Nikolai!!!
@Raf Kend - Thank you for pointing out the sheer un-necessity of the distracting body language grandstanding, which has become _de rigueur_ among so many of today's performers, as though such gimmickry somehow make their performances more musical. In truth, more often than not it does precisely the opposite. Bravo to Nikolai Lugansky and the other musicians for such a brilliant integration of soloist and orchestra in this classic masterpiece by Grieg.
I had the honor to play horn in school orchestra in 7th grade ( I was only 13) and we played the first movement of this wonderful concerto! It was a great experience! Thank god, I didn't miss my action!
And to think Liszt suggested it be on the trumpet! Grieg accepted at first, but, THANFULLY, it was one of the first things he changed (among the many revisions he made throughout his life). And, I agree, it's a beautiful cello part! Actually, this concerto's second themes are all as gorgeous as the first themes.
After hearing the original version of Grieg's piano concerto I could not bear to listen to other versions of this concerto until I found this excellent recording by Lugansky of one of Grieg's revised versions. It is fantastic & a delight.
Yeah playing without sheets is extremely common, so common in fact, that it is pretty much the standard for any concert performer, let alone someone of the stature and brilliance as Lugansky
This is by far the best recording of this piece I've ever heard....and I've heard dozens. Orchestra and soloist are beyond superb. Lugansky is the shit!!
@@esterbaque7757 Yes, the Rubinstein version is another great recording. I was lucky enough to hear Rubinstein live 3 times. Thanks for responding Ester.
A superb performance and I consider myself fortunate that I saw Lugansky perform this work when I visited London in 2016. However, for me, the broadcast was, again, spoiled by the camerawork. I much prefer to see the pianist, and preferably a side on-view. It's frustrating when you get the shot from the front. He's a pianist for goodness sake so why not show more of the playing. Also I don't need to see the flautist's nostrils or extreme close ups of various brass instruments. It happens with every production no matter who is broadcasting and I end up just closing my eyes and listening to the performance. I may as well have it on radio. However, having had my little rant, I'm very grateful that such concerts are posted on this forum. Thank you, Enchanted Warrior. :-)

One of the best performances of this concerto that I have ever heard. Lugansky!
Bravo bravo bravo brilliance fantastic grandiose music concerto pianist super
Stunningly beautiful as usual -- it's Lugansky !
What a thrill to be able to watch this amazing performance. Lugansky's talent is breathtaking.
What can I say - Nikolai is so brilliant; real feeling for this piece. Simply lovely.
He must have seen our fiords, the mountains, everything

Lugansky is the consamate perfectionist.
Outstanding interpretation, musicality on highest level, nice video and special thx to the sound engineer
Great interpretation - no theatricals, just purely felt - wonderful orchestral playing too
Excellent. Nikolai Lugansky is a great pianist. Thank you very much for this sharing.

MERVEILLEUX pianiste.
16:41Very nice flute sound. And the exquisite interaction between piano and orchestra is beautiful!
I love the bit at the end of the first movement when the opening chords come back with those roaring scales in the bass around it.
The beginning of the third movement is one of the most impactful things ever written; and executed to perfection here.

Amazing performance of one of my all time favourite pieces
Incroyable, sublime, Lugansky est un magicien.

Lugansky's technique never fails to amaze me. Another sublime performance here.
Saw "Song of Norway" many times, always cried my eyes out, so perfect why did he write only 1piano-concert, just LOVE it!😢❤❤
I often question why Grieg never write a violin concerto, too. His violin sonatas are out of this world.
The cadenza's first movement is amazing, a lot of powerful
I love the cello part at 2:29~ it's so lovely whenever they get the melody for a brief few seconds 💙

@@Pedro_Larroza Where can I find all the suggestions Liszt made?
What a great drummer as well! Gives so much to the piece!
I love this concert very much and the way Mr Lugansky plays it is like being in the Heavens. ❤❤❤
FELIZ CUMPLEAÑOS, NIKOLAI!!!! TE ADMIRO PROFUNDAMENTE!
Beautifully played
From 28:05 to the end - wow! Sheer power!
Absolutely brilliant

Magnifico
Absolutely an exquisite performance!
Superb!!
Absolutamente divino!
THANKS ! ❤
The film's quality is so G00000D! 👍👍👍❤️
The fact that he played through the whole concerto beautifully without a single piece of sheet is absolutely amazing, I'm at a loss for word now.
That´s how most play, even non-professionals. When I took piano lessons we had to memorize the sheet music for our recitals/concerts.
Yeah playing without sheets is extremely common, so common in fact, that it is pretty much the standard for any concert performer, let alone someone of the stature and brilliance as Lugansky
Have you any idea how many times he’s played this? He probably vaguely knew how to play it before he knew how to play it.
Brilliant
Sensacional! Maravilhoso!
I played everythinf Grieg, why did he write only 1concerto, it is so perfect!❤😢❤
wonderful
Fine Performance of one of the greatest piano concertos of all time !!!!!
een van de mooiste uitvoeringen; zeldzaam.

I agree - one of the best interpretations. Very close to Arthuro Bendetti Michelangeli. I mean the dynamics.

One of my favorite artists in most genre, the only commonality noticed is the almost exceeded acceptable level of bass note mistakes.
My Norway.
Very solid and good interpretation. But I can also hear/feel the 'routine' in Lugansky playing this here.
Ironically; I first heard this In "The song of Norway" in Jones Beach in 1958.

This one just easier than Rach 2 right?
Yes
Wouldn't be so sure about that. I can play Rach 2, and the 3rd movement is not as hard as Grieg's one, in my opinion.

Scandaleux !
Ridiculous tempo, even the soloist doesn't know how to keep up with it. Listen to Rubinstein instead.
