    Dude this was so good.
In early classical music, and until Baroque it was very common to take one artists music and do exactly what you describe: change words, music, make it your own. Was called a parody :D Bach did that in his famous "Weihnachtsoratorium". Those times authorship was not as strictly handled as it is in our modern pop music and that's something I appreciate so much about folk music too

There is a long tradition, especially in folk music, of borrowing chord sequences, melodies and even whole chunks of lyrics.
I believe it's just a continuation of one very long song, the story of America if you like.

You remind me of Andrew Bird a little bit.

    Great video, good explanation.
Funnily, that's how I write actually. I am not long into writing, but still.
My song "the circle" was inspired by "all along the watchtower" and the idea for my song "hey mister Marley" came from "song to woody"
If you'd like to check those out, to give me some feedback on how I couls improve, I'd be very glad.

I’m looking for your Tom Petty series that used to be up on your channel, did it get copyrighted?/:

I'm hoping to re-do them; it was my first attempt at making a video and I think I can do Tom Petty more justice. He's one of my top favorite of all time writers. I have my lesson notes available on my website though if you want to re-visit the concepts. songwritingresources.com/2018/06/18/how-to-write-a-song/

The biggest secret to Dylan's lyrical success that nobody seems to catch on is his mastery of using rhetorical devices such as metaphor, anaphora, personification, imagery techniques, and stylistic changes in grammar structure. Mark Forsyth's book "Elements of Eloquence" goes into more detail about that, as well as an upcoming book called "SongMatrix" by Wayne Chase
