Very true. That's why I am pretty excited to see 8th gen coming down in price, hopefully we'll see some good budget options with the 6core / 12thread i7s, instead of being stuck with 4/8.
Had the Dell XPS 8930 (same pc essentially) and put a RX 5700 XT in it and boy, these 8th-9th gen PCs are still very capable machines. I can see these Dells becoming the new "meta" for budget gaming builds.
Whoa, a Dell that's newer than 3rd Gen, AND has a 24-pin motherboard connector? That's absolutely awesome, I would have never expected Dell to do this and will probably have to pick one of these systems up for myself at some point, great vid!
I ordered one of these direct from Dell as a refurb for $300 - but it came with 32 GB of RAM, a m.2 SSD, and a sweet Quadro P2000. Also, although this wasn't clear from the listing, it came with a 460w platinum rated PSU with a 8+6 PCI-e power connector. I was able to flip the P2000 (which Plex fiends apparently love) and get a 1660ti and a small profit. Great little machine for mixed use at a secondary location I'm at a few months a year The problem I have with it you may have guessed - that wimpy aluminum cooler just isn't enough for the 8700. Even with a repaste I was hitting 100c in prolonged intensive tasks. A cheap tower cooler would be great, but of course this design doesn't have room for one with the PSU over the CPU. Dell really should have shipped this with the T57JF cooler with copper heatpipes they used for some Xeon versions of this machine.
The whole 8th-11th generation offerings are getting more and more interesting. It's also helping the more recent market - I managed to get a 13700f for $170, for my 'not project' PC... The projects are far more interesting... they always are. And also, as always, love your videos - your twisted computer pool noodle chair desk vibe is just perfect. Don't ever change.

Great video! I’ll need to check one of these out as I’m due an upgrade from my daily driver 4th gen i5 rig. That 24 pin power connector is a nice touch too.
That 8700 is a low key beast. It's probably even got headroom on the 1080ti. I was pushing a 2070 super to a mostly content 100% and my 8700 never got past 70%
Thanks for the great video.. I was able to find a 3630 mt with the i5 8600 for like 127$ counting shipping on ebay and after a few modest upgrades its turned out to be a awesome deal. Thanks again
Another good budget option is the Lenovo P520, since it comes with a 900W power supply with 2 8-pin graphics connectors on it, and the performance of its W-2135 CPU is slightly better for only $150. However the power supply is proprietary so the build shown in the build might be more practical for some people. The case of the Dell is shorter too so thay might be better for a desk that cant fit the tall Lenovo. Some people say that the P520 is the new meta for budget builds but this Dell is a great alternative.
this looks to be right in the sweetspot and also in your niche - an i7 8700 can basically do it all - the gpu is probably the main wildcard - best upgrades for these systems - nvme and 2.5gbe, with 9th gen upgrade these machines may be able to run 128gb ram? could be a consideration in the future for upgrades - faster and more ram!
Definitely! I went pretty low on the RAM this time, but used DDR4 is pretty cheap, so wouldn't be a huge hit to get some more in there and at least fill out all the slots.
I bought one from an ex govy computer site. It came with 32GB of DDR4 and had a factory 460W PS with 6 and 8 pin GPU power connectors. If really keen there is also a factory cooler and VReg heatsink available if you are crunching big numbers.
My rig is rocking the same CPU and GPU it’s great, intel XTU software helps in getting the most out of the I7 8700 and if you can get a ID cooling IS 67XT black cooler it holds its own in the upper mid range.
Oooo.. I got 2 of these Dell Precision 3630 from my university's surplus auction for $120. One has a Xeon 2186G and 32GB RAM, the other was some 8th Gen i5.
Cool! I have one of those too, use it as a home server/NAS with 3x4TB hdds. It can use ECC memory which is really nice for a server. Funny story, I got it almost for free since I got a partial refund for some severe (but cosmetic) shipping damage and also sold its Quadro graphics card to make up the rest.
Howdy lowcastle. Have watched a few of your videos, especially the "shameful" z440 videos. My current setup is a z440 with a 2696V3, 64gb of ram and a RTX 3070. If youre looking for a budget graphics card, the 3070 has plummeted in price, and business cases work very well with blower cards like your 1080ti and my 3070.
With a dremel you can add 3x120mm fans to this preatty easy lol. Did one in the front one in the top and you can sandwich a 120mm corsair aio in there as well lol.
Yeah I can see that for sure. That's one thing I like about the old HP Prodesks, even if the panel gets jammed and won't open you can just use a screwdriver to push the plate down and pop the lever.
I didn't see any prefab mount points for another fan, but there is definitely space for one. I imagine I could get creative with some double-sided tape and wire to throw something in there if need be.
I got this system for $75 recently, it has a Xeon E-2244G, 32GB of RAM, but unfortunately it only has 256GB of storage and integrated graphics. I plan to get a 1080 Ti and upgrade the PSU and storage as well.
If someone wanted to build one of these and NOT swap out the power supply, the 6GB versions of the RTX 3050 require no PCIe power connectors. For $160-170 or so, it's a valid option, even if the card itself gets a lot of hate for...existing.
I didnt get a close look at the motherboard, but putting a 9900K in that machine might be a waste. I doubt the VRM can push enough power to let the 9900K stretch its legs for any notable period of time without thermal throttling.
Good point, I hadn't really thought of that. Do you think it might get it there if I threw on a better cooler and some additional fans? Worst case scenario I could probably even smack it with a pool noodle a couple times. 🙂

I used a Corsair 650w. Most standard power supplies will work, mainly just make sure whichever one you get has the PCIe connectors that you need. That is what will power the GPU, and it varies between different power supplies. The PCIe connectors should be listed in the specs section of any PSU you look at. For example, the one I used has dual 6+2 pin connectors.
