You know someone has cross the line when Bret starts to defend Shawn.
Looks like Shawn’s just staying out of this because he’s above Jake’s BS.
Plus Bret has problems with Jake Robert’s from Stampede. According to Bret, they lived together in Edmonton at one point. When Jake had to move out, Jake asked Bret to buy his stereo system for $1,500 because he could not take it with him. Bret made the payment. When Jake moves out, the took the stereo system with him, plus the $1,500.

I didn't like Bret raising the idea of "why didn't they give Jake the belt then?" Feels oto immature, and just because promotions wouldn't put the belt on Jake, for myriad reasons, doesn't mean he can't possibly have an astute observation.
But, man was this a wrong observation, and man was that line you quoted a great way to put him in his place.

I'll never understand the size thing with Bret hart or shawn Michaels, when bruno sammartino, pedro Morales, Bob backlund or even kurt angle were of the same height wise and could not only draw but could go in the ring.
I'd say it was more the timing of it. Bret and Shawn came just after Hulk Hogan and Ultimate Warrior. Sammartino, Backlund and Morales came before them, and Angle was a legit Olympic Gold Medalist, which gave him automatic credibility, regardless of his size.
Pre roid era, Bret & HBK headlined after the steroid era of Hogan, Warrior, Road Warriors, Sid, Luger etc.

Exactly, it makes no sense. How can you bash two of the best workers ever to do it inside the ring. They did draw, just not to the levels of guys like stone cold, hogan or rock, and not many guys could, those 3 are in a league of their own. These guys were champions during the whole steroid scandal, which no one could safe the wwf from, and then NWO as well at wcw...it was just unfortunate timing. But everyone knows Bret and Shawn were two of the best ever. Jake is hating and has no ground to stand on, when it comes to this topic.

By the time Austin took over as top dog the NWO wasn't really fresh anymore and Austin had heels like McMahon and The Rock to feud with. So from a business standpoint Shawn didn't do that well but he put on PPV caliber matches night in and night out regardless

Like Bret lays it down: He didn't miss shows, he kept guys safe inside the ring when he worked with them, and he still managed to tell a story. As long as he helped make money for the promotion he worked for, he was doing his job. When Jake was on top of his game he could check nearly all of these boxes too. However, he did have periods where he did miss shows. He did have periods where he did (accidentally) get guys hurt. He did have periods where he didn't even know what story he was trying to tell. And he did have shows where he took money for little more than being a lump of shit. I'm glad he still gets his accolades, and I'm more glad he is in a place of better physical and mental health. But this go-round, he should stop and reflect on himself as a darkly colored pot before trying to describe other kettles by their blackness.

When Bret was champion he was pretty much the only draw. The quality of the roster was so poor at that time, caused in large part due to the steroid scandal and the absence of the huge wrestlers. Take those away and what did they have left? Bret pretty much carried the company single handedly for a while.

This one is an interesting topic. Jim is being really fair. And yes, Jake was not just cursed with bad genes. He didnt work out. He'd have had no career, had he not been tall.
Jake's promo and psychology was good enough that he could have always found a place in the wrestling business imo. He may have never been a top guy back in the day if he was 5'9, but he would've always been able to draw heat.
I was gonna say the same thing. I think saying he had bad genes is a bit of a cop out. Did he even try to get a nicer body? You're telling me that was the best he could do? I'm sure that coke kept him skinny enough.

While I agree that Shawn or Bret didn't draw to the levels of Hogan, The Rock, or Steve Austin, it's unfair to place the entire blame on both. Between 1992 to 1996 Business was generally not that great. I mean when Bret was Champion it was straight during the steroid scandal while Shawn took it during the NWO being at its hottest. Furthermore they had a lousy roster to deal with. Look at the Rumbles in those years and you will see how shallow that roster was. Now put anyone even Hogan who had cooled off by 1995, in the same circumstances and see whether they will draw the monster business that they did. The point about being a great draw is that you are already leading a hot company. That's why I think it's wrong for someone to say for example Austin solely saved the company in 98. He was the biggest reason for the Attitude Era but not the sole reason, Shawn, Bret, Taker all contributed and Rock, Foley and HHH helped expand it. Therefore an effective draw yea has to be big in themselves but also has to have a great supporting cast which Bret and Shawn didn't necessarily have. But anyway in my eyes those two men belong in the GOAT discussion no question.
Great post. Especially regarding Royal Rumble 95. The shortest rumble match ever and it literally began and ended with HBK and British Bulldog.
Of course they helped but with all due respect both Shawn and Bret were done by the time the war really started getting good
@@LanceG007 In my mind the best years of the war were 97-98. By 1999 WCW was quickly losing it and there was no war. Therefore, if you look at 97 Bret and Shawn were still there and in my mind, I'm admitting my bias, that was the best year in the war especially WWE; the Hart Foundation (Best version of Bret), the Best version of Austin (still able to do far much more than after the injury and I tend to like heel Austin pre Wrestlemania), Taker finally wrestling properly (He's always great but man were his matches tiresome before 97 save the ones with Foley) and most especially the arrogant, prickly Shawn Michaels leading DX at its best (The original version is better than any reincarnation because this was the essence of DX). On WCW Sting and NWO were still hot. Now 98 had Goldberg, Rock and Austin as the man and after that it's done.

Bret was never a boring wrestler. He brought both ladder matches and table bumps to the WWE, two staples they’ve beaten to death since but which at the time were mind-blowing. He had violent/bloody brawls or gripping matches with anyone from Bulldog, Roddy or Austin, Undertaker to 123Kid, or even goddamned Diesel. Bret was never boring and nobody who understands wrestling could ever say that 😂

Bret Hart is 100% right, Jake the snake was never on his or shawn Michaels level as a wrestler or a star, taking over from Hogan was a very tough task and he and shawn Michaels did a great job
Bret and Shawn would have drawn huge in different eras possibly the current one but their best years were bookended by Hogan and Austin. Nobody could touch that.
@Steve Creator that's not a fair assessment. They were no shorter than Ric Flair. They were 6'1-2". That's not short. The problem was Bret didn't have the charisma of other top guys like dusty, Bruno, Hogan, or Flair. Or even warrior for that matter. But that's the one thing draws huge money. His work was every bit as good as any other top draw if not better but he couldn't talk them in the building like the others and nobody believed Shawn michaels could beat anybody let alone Nash, Hart, Sid, or Vader.

@Derrick Jones Bret was the only wrestler who drew between the Hogan and Austin eras, especially overseas. Without Bret's drawing power on WWE's constant tours of Europe, WWE would've ended in the mid-90's. The business went to shit when Diesel and Shawn were given runs with the strap.

Antabuse is the medication Cornette is referring to that Michael Hayes was supposed to be taking when he got drunk at Stephanie McMahon's wedding. I was on that stuff for a while after I completed my second stint in rehab. Luckily I Have 17 years clean and sober and will hopefully never have to take that stuff again.
Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels were the best of their era. The Rock and Steve Austin were just untouchable in theirs.

Let's face facts Jake is a guy who's unprofessional behaviour, inside and outside of the ring has made him a lot of enemies and his father was noted for an interest in young girls.
In fact Leroy McGuirk admiited that he had to stop running in Texarkana after Grizzly Smith was accused of an offence involving a young girl, so Jake has never had a stable family background and his demons have gotten to him on several occasions, Bret noted that at a show he was seen leading a pair of black prostitutes at the hotel and treating them like some old fashioned slaver.
"A wonderful redemption story, he is still alive." Jim cornette, I am going to use that if I ever go to a AA meeting.

"Hart and Michaels were too small to be believable champions." Biggest draw ever was physically about the same size; lost to Hart at 13 in all-time classic, and beat Michaels for title at 14. Michaels also has two of WrestleMania's other all-time most loved matches against 6'10" Undertaker. Were those big "draws"? King Kong Bundy said the same thing as Jake. It's just stupid, missing entirely the appeal of the David versus Goliath archetype, and ignoring so many factors that influence the overall success of the WWF in any given era.

The one thing they have always had in common is a craftsmanship for wrestling. They'll be on the same side when people like Hogan, Warrior, Jake or Bundy challenge their competence.
Jake was a good psychologist not just for himself, but Undertaker as well. He would get psychology advice primarily from Jake Roberts. And I thought their match together at Wrestlemania VIII was pretty good.
Jake just can't keep out of trouble with the Harts, can he. First he says nasty things about Davey Boy Smith, then he insults Bret. Let's face it, Jake Roberts is not as sympathetic of a person as fans make him out to be. Jake's just more trouble than he's worth and in spite of his sympathetic story and background, that does not make him a sympathetic person and immune to criticism. Jake is certainly NO saint.

Pro-wrestling is an interesting animal in this regard. Shawn Michaels maybe the greatest in-ring worker I have seen, but as an overall package I was always more of a Bret Hart guy.
Ric Flair is a legend, but I can't completely overlook his treatment of women or his disinterest in paying taxes. Dusty Rhodes was limited and self-absorbed, but he was one the most captivating promos ever.
I always refuse to name a 'G.O.A.T.' cuz there are so many variables.
Jake was awesome on the mic - especially as a heel in '91 - as well as knowing what to do with very little. He has his place on the mountain top somewhere, but I think most promoters would have hired Bret over Jake any day.
I know he wasn’t as popular in the US but Bret was huge in the U.K in the 90’s. I remember he even got cheered when he came out at Wembley against the British bulldog which wouldn’t happen to many people.

The World Champion lost prestigue when Mysterio won it (not because him, but how they booked him and how they booked the later champions (Except Batista, Taker, Edge, Jericho, etc.)

There’s a reason Jake Roberts was never world champion. Jake Roberts is a bum. Ask his kids. I’ll take a realistic Bret Hart match over an over scripted, over exaggerated Shawn Michaels match any day.

Bret could make anyone look good. I know people always wanted Sting vs. The Undertaker, but a prime Bret vs. Prime Sting, would have been awesome!

Jake was amazingly charismatic, had a great gimmick, great promo, great finisher. I remember a lot of great Jake angles.
But I cannot think of one great Jake match.
Jake the Snake vs. Rick Martel in the Blindfold Match at WM 7 was epic. The fans assisted Jake by shouting out where Martel was when Jake pointed in the ring. Martel threw a fit. That match was original and memorable. There has never been a match quite like it. Getting the fans to help him "cheat to win" was an example of Jake Roberts' "peerless ring psychology." I could say the same thing about Jake getting the fans to empathize with him during the angle where Earthquake squashed Damien. Jake knew how to get the fans to "support him", like no other performer in the business ever could. My favorite Jake Roberts angle was when he won Ted DiBiase's Million Dollar belt. When Jake walked around with that belt, he looked like an outlaw, and the fans loved it.

Bret was probably the most balanced champion they’ve had between wrestling, showmanship, professionalism, drive and marketability. He wasn’t excellent in any of those categories (except notably wrestling) but he was at least average to good in all of them. It’s a pity he had his run during such a slump in the industry.

Back in 1992,Bret's next feud after he beat Piper was going to be with Jake but the latter left for WCW. Jake had also said that his job was to get the next guy ready for Hogan
He was supposed to do that program with Warrior but they put Warrior with Hulk, he held Vince up for money and got fired. So Jake ended up working with Taker. So that kind of refutes that. Esp since he had nothing to do with Sid or Slaughter and both them were out after Mania 8 with Hogan taking time off and Jake going to WCW.
And how ironic of Jake to shittalk Warrior for holding Vince up when the reason Jake quit was because he was mad that he didn't get Patterson's job when Patterson had to leave over the shit Patterson got himself into.
Jake could have been champ if he wanted to, he cost himself millions of dollars.

IC champ probably, but Jake was like the Undertaker in that he never needed a belt to legitimize what he did. Realistically speaking, a guy who looked like he did in his prime in the late 80's and early 90's was never going to carry the company as champ in the steroid monster Hogan/Warrior era, although it would've been cool to see him as the transitional champ instead of Slaughter in '91.

Jake was never champ because WWF hardly ever changed champions back in that day. If he was active (and younger) post-2000, he would have held the strap at least three times.

Didn't Jake say he came back super cut and muscular but Vince said he didn't like it. It went against his character or something. Bret was built and big. He only looked small next to guys like Nash and Undertaker. Everyone did even HBK. But Bret had an impressive build, no question.

Bret & Bulldogs match summerslam 92 was just about as spectacular as it gets. The 80,000+ crowd was stoked when bulldog got outta that sharp shooter by grabbing the ropes. I dunno if I ever heard a louder crowd at any WWE match than that. Maybe Hogan vs Rock at wrestlemania 18?

I remember Jake being in phenomenal shape (comparatively) in ‘91, during his feud with Savage. He looked a million bucks at Tuesday in Texas. The match was crap, but the angle was white hot.

I'm by no means a casual fan, I've studied wrestling for years. But I do prefer wrestlers like Hogan, Warrior, Sid, Austin and Rock, rather than people like Shawn and Benoit.

I personally think Razor Ramon would have been more successful than Deisel in the top spot in ‘95. He’d done more than Deisel and was more over than anyone gives him credit for. Maybe he woulda stayed in WWF too if he was making champ money...idk just a thought
Vince wouldn't put Jake against Hogan because Jake was a serious threat to what Vince had with Hogan. The crowd loved Jake!
jake said Bret and Shawn were the worst draws, but there have been lots since then that drew lower houses. Benoit and Guerrero to name a couple. Last year they were canceling house shows that Kofi Kingston was headlining. WWE wish they had a Bret or Shawn these days.
And Diesel was a much worse draw than Bret (as was Shawn).
