  • This is address questions regarding the integrity of using the Butler Method on both sides of your zipper on your Swoosh bag. Watch through to see a demo of one of my tried and true bags - that I’ve been using since July - and in which I used the Butler method to install the zipper.

Not sure it makes sense to do my method on both ends. When you do it that way then you have to spin the bag around and it then removes the ease that the Butler Method promotes. I'd think that just sewing the zipper into the SA would be easier and less risky. If it's working for you right on! Glad you dig my method!

thank you for this video, I have to say if you sold your bag you cannot guarantee how your customer might use the zipper, and as I have had this happen to me on a bag I made.

I’m not at all careful with my bags. I’m a heavy handed user LOL especially since I know I can fix it if it breaks. I have sold bags like this for quite a while with no issues from anyone. I do really think it probably comes down to quality and type of zipper and style of bag but I’m glad we’ve had the discussion because it can’t hurt to be cautious about it. I like the idea of doing a quick zig zag at one end if not using a tab.

I’m curious what kind of zipper you used, too, was it this type of an all purpose number 3?

@@pommyjill well I’m going to secure the next one with a little zigzag and see how it looks. It can’t hurt and would take two seconds for the added piece of mind. I’ll post what it looks like that way.

Nicole, I’m glad you addressed this issue as I had done this on a make up bag. Wasn’t sure if it would hold up so I did zig zag over the zipper end to be sure it would not separate. I was not going to do anything with the bag but my SIL wanted it. Enjoying your videos. Keep up the wonderful work.

Thanks, Elizabeth! Good idea to zig zag over the zipper. I really love the zipper being so cleanly sandwiched in the seams and out of the way of the corner so I think it’s worth doing!

I have used the Butler method and the other one u tack the end off and add a tab when I did the recessed zipper haven't decided which method I like the most, though I'm still new to bag making I have been sewing for over 40 yrs

I like different methods for different bags. Butter for sure for the small zipper pouches/cross bodies and even some smaller totes that taper to the opening. I also love using the loop around zipper method for those. And then for my larger and bulkier bags I like zipper hang tabs. And then if I’m feeling motivated- you can’t go wrong with a recessed zipper for those.
