Lastly, just because someone plays guitar, it doesnt mean they've done something necessarily productive with their life (at least from an outside perspective) e.g. I could sit in my room playing guitar all day and do absolutely nothing else with my life. No different from playing computer games all day, in the context given above.

Speed without melody is crap. Anyone can play atonally fast but to pick your notes to fit the underlying chord requires a very good understanding of music structure. A slow melodic solo smokes a fast atonal solo any day of the week
@@ZFlyingVLover er. guess i'm new here. i . but there is a LOT of 'fast' in here. granted, i think it sounds really good and tasteful, but there are well over sixteen measures of fast and shred stuff. i guess i'm confused. you also mention coordination with chords. atonal is just nonsense, unless you're a master with is, like schonberg, bartok, webern, berg and so on. . really good players that are legendary don't rely on it. i'm an old dude so forgive my ignorance. i will say that i really like this guy's tone, it's fat and beefy, borderline bluesy, perfect amount of ambience/reverb. i find that if the guitar tone is ideal, it makes you play with more feeling. if it sounds like a mosquito, i find that i would overplay to compensate for the long notes sounding like crud. you mention atonality. i used to be an allan holdsworth simp. but towards the end, everything he did was atonal. during his peak, which was 1980 to 1992, he played more 'inside' than outside. after '92 he became increasingly more atonal. (granted, his work before 1977 was also atonal). sorry for the tldr, i'm old and drunk and stoned

Either way, the goal was to intimidate and disorient. I first saw the arcane spelling in Steaphen Ficks book, where it was used to describe a fencing technique that was in line with my initial statement.

Amazing nostalgic feeling you get with this solo. Every time I find music like this, I try to take note of it somewhere because it's so rare. It doesn't even have a genre. You'll find it sometimes in anime OP or ED theme songs. Sometimes video games, sometimes 80s melodic power ballad music, etc., but there is no specific genre. Two other guitarists who just nail this type of music are: Marty Friedman and Neil Zaza. They just "get it". They get how to create that melodic nostalgic sound that only the guitar can make, no other instrument. Truly wish more guitarists would understand how to be melodic like this instead of just boring repetitive shredding. I love shredding, don't get me wrong, but it has to be done tastefully - in service of the song. Not just mindless fast alternate picking with no vibrato, no buildup, no theme. Anyways, BRAVO!
