Part 2 of this video is here,
    th-cam.com/video/GYRHJwNY6jw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=MZqduOG0_Y0SiBwp
Also Immersion is a term that most people use PASSIVELY as in (just listen to audio and be around the language and magically become fluent), That doesn't work.
If YOUR version of Immersion requires a lot of deliberate practice, then yes, 'Immersion' does work.
In my experience, 99% of people who use that word around me think it's a passive effort. That's why I say that.
Anyhow go watch part 2! Love yall.

I love the guitar too... I spend a lotta time watching videos of good guitarists, and I'd just sit there and wish all day until I decided to pick it up three weeks ago... I started going to the gym about the same time too I found out that after gym the guitar seems easier to practice but then I've been having issues with music I'd really love to get in touch with you... I mean you and I have three hobbies in common. I'd just wait for your replies. Thanks in advance

This is my literally my life at work as a software architect, I may have to steal that quote. It really is similar. Among the architects, I am often able see things others don't, like from inside out, and outside in at the same time. (Because the other architects try too hard to focus on the engineering they miss out on adding the logical separation and configuration to create truly operational architecture) But among the engineers, they really appreciate approach but sometimes grump that I leave too much to the engineering teams to solve or create additional initial work for them because of the overall complexity. "You designed it right so now we have to work harder the first time (but won't have a buggy system later)" 😂

I think that’s fine actually, if that what ‘Results’ or even ‘good’ is to you.

Edit: some of y’all confuse ‘results’ with ‘best in the universe’,
Please use your brain. At least for this video.
If all you want to do is play WonderWall on guitar, then great,

Definitely! It doesn't matter if you're great at something or awful at it (as long as no one is expecting you to be amazing, like if it was a paid job). At the end of the day, if you're doing something because you're interested in it and having a great time doing so as well, that's all that matters. Life is a journey... you find new things you enjoy here and there... lose interest in others... and the cycle continues. If you want to develop more skill in something, you just need to focus more of your time into that activity than others, but if you're just doing something to chill and enjoy it for what it is at your current skill level, then that's perfectly fine as well :)

65 year old here, I have a lot of interest which I return to periodically, life can be like a long hallway with a lot of doors. All those doors are your different interest, different people, I tell my kids don’t be afraid to open the door some of those doors that you enter, you’ll leave and close forever and some you’ll leave open so you can always return to. I just returned to the guitar for the fourth time in my life nine months ago and I play every day now, I still think of my other interest, but I don’t do them as much, and I also look at some of my interest as seasonal such as fishing in the summer, woodworking in the winter. I'm 35 and none taken no worries. It's just that I have a ton of things I'm interested in and though I've dropped a bunch I'm still left with an embarrassing amount.
I'm currently a homemaker and may still work part time in future, I'm married and may still have kids someday. I'm very stressed as I'm already struggling to manage my hobbies with only housework. I guess I feel like I don't want to make any sacrifices (other than the interests I will no longer pursue) and that I want to have it all, perhaps it's a bit selfish. Sorry for the vent and thank you for your kind words.

@@PQ_497I understand where you’re coming from! I feel the same way too! It’s this year that I can say I’m truly myself. Most of my life, I was dealing with mental health issues… so I coped by escapism. However, you don’t have to achieve everything at once. It gets overwhelming leading to the thought of “why even bother at this point”, don’t listen to that voice and sabotage yourself. Do what you can in the time you have. Remember, whether you doing something or not time goes on. So, it’s better to do something, achieve some of your goals than not doing anything at all. Also, don’t be hard on yourself for wasting time in the past, it in the past now. Start your new journey today. Don’t worry about the future and don’t dwell on the past. Sending you all the love and positivity 🙌🙌.
Matthew 6:34 is “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
In Isaiah 43:18-19, “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.”

I completely understand you. Because of mental health issues I wasted so much time too. However, don’t beat yourself up for wasting a time, it’s all in the past now. Your new journey starts the moment you forgive yourself and move on from your past. Remember, whether you’re working on your goals and hobbies or not time flies by. The thought of “not having enough time to work on all hobbies, so why even bother” is self sabotaging. You don’t have to achieve everything what matters is you start doing something. It’s better to achieve and excel in some of your hobbies than nothing. Try to avoid “all or nothing mindset”. Just go with the flow.
A struggle I had was and still working on is fear of failure. So, I avoid doing anything, if I think I won’t have more time or I will fail. That mindset only lead to procrastination and regret later on my life. I now understand, we’re here to make mistakes, failing is not the end of the world, dwelling on my past only leads to emotional turmoil, and forgiving yourself and others is the start of your healing journey.
Sorry for yapping 😂 I just got the feeling to say this to you! Sending you all love and positivity 🙌

Being a generalist is SO underrated. Marketing consultant, and it's frustrating how many small businesses get scammed bc they meet a specialist in ONE (of about a dozen) discipline who talks the client into spending 100% of their budget on the one speciality/discipline they happen to know and sell...whereas I'm capable of 100% customizing strategies and tactics to the CLIENT'S situation.

Tbf, it's hard to capitalize generalist skill, unless you're a T person who has one specific skill and know a lot of other stuffs.
It's easier to contribute to society as a person who is good in python programming but sucks in sports and music than a person who can do anything from python programming to playing musical instruments, but at the basic level.
Don't get me wrong, im a generalist myself. I can do a lot of things, ranging from swimming (all strokes from freestyle to butterfly), badminton, basketball, soccer, playing guitar, bass, harmonica, drum, above average rank in competitive gaming, basic linux scripting, etc. and i'm a mechanical engineer. But, i don't think im so good at a specific thing (beside engineering, which i don't really like, tbh) to the point that my skill is marketable.
That's the main problem as a generalist, imo. We're lacking mastery in skills hence we can't contribute a lot to society as quick as specialist, unless we take entrepreneurship path which is much harder than traditional professional way.

There are general doctors, and specialist doctors. Neither one are a scam, they each fulfill a different purpose. Same with marketing. Your clients are not being scammed, it could just be they need the right approach. There are situations where specializing is better, and others where having a general knowledge is better. They are complimentary traits, hence why we live in a society where our complimentary skills and traits are set up to help one another.

This is soooo good (and accurate). My two foci are all things God (theology) and music (composition/playing piano). Being raised to be a Christian (although that came later!) and having a mother and grandmother as pianists, I learned classical/folk music (jazz/funk) came later. I had private lessons and lessons at home, this gave me a lot of discipline. I also went into the military as a combat medic (more discipline). I picked up a little German, though I didn’t fully learn it, it sparked interest in foreign languages. I became a Christian, received a call from God to preach/teach. I went to Bible college and then seminary. But prior to seminary I began to learn some Latin on my own, which propelled me to gain the much needed discipline to learn Koine Greek and Hebrew in seminary. Today I am a pastor and a couple of years ago published my first book.
So, what you are saying here, Vaughn, really peeked my interest. What a great concept you unpacked for all of us. I have attempted to do too many things at once over the years: write multiple books at the same time, compose more than two songs at once, study for exams, etc. You are right, it does not work very well. Thank you so much for revealing what you learned for everyone to consider. God’s peace.

I got burned out a couple months ago because my New Year’s resolutions was a huge list of reading 24 books, hitting 1,000lbs SBD total, running a marathon, hitting sub 30 seconds on Rubik’s Cube, picking up guitar again, hitting 1500 chess rating, etc and it was just way too much. I actually started therapy a couple months ago to address a lot of these thought patterns and feeling like I should be doing more but I’ve learned that hobbies and novelty are a huge aspect of my life. This is genius. Learning from 0 is really hard. If you start to learn your every interest from 0 at the same time you won't have time nor energy, nor focus, nor motivation. You have to space the learning from zero or the deep learning processes, basically "the hard part". If you build your routine with 10 tasks you're going to drop it... You have make sure you can do a task easily before adding another one! I thought that if I put in half that time trying to get fit I might actually make some progress. I committed to running and dropped 100lbs in one year. Fast forward over a decade and the weight is still off and I'm an extremely fit 50+ year old ultra-marathon runner. Some people dive into many skills, while others stick to one, and both are fine! If something’s just a hobby and it makes you happy, being mediocre is okay. But it can also be exciting to take a skill to the next level, challenge yourself, and feel like you’re growing.
I’ve learned instruments and pursued skills out of necessity, like playing guitar, bass, and drums so I could record my own music without relying on others. Or studying vocal techniques to better guide singers as a musical director. These efforts helped me grow and opened doors, like coaching on X Factor.
The key is to follow what excites you. Whether it’s for fun or something bigger, pursuing what’s in your heart can be deeply fulfilling, and if you find a way to make a living from it, that’s even better.

I also have a lot of similar interests such as bass, web development, and creating art. I just started a TH-cam channel to hopefully keep me accountable. It is very hard for me to focus. Watching your videos have been helpful. I had set small goals to help me continue learning my interests. Your previous advice on continuing to stick with one set of videos / mastering one video was very helpful too. I have come to this conclusion that I should stick with one type of material for learning Japanese before moving onto the next type of material. I keep adding so much that it paralysed me sometimes.
I can not wait to see more from you!

This is something ive struggled and I'm surprised that most people don't seem tohave as many interests as many of us here do. I feel life is too short not to follow all my interests. I like to play guitar, record and release music on my channel, physical training, reading, and for a long time I've wanted to write novels so that's what I've been trying to do the most lately. It's a dream I always had, to tell stories and makes a difference through them, just like with my music. It's great to find other people like that with many interests that we have in common, even the fact that we have many interests to begin with

even a video like this cant help me, i have so many interests it is unbelievable. I could never choose 2 or 3 of them over dozens. Im a generalist, and i think i now why. Autistic and ADHD people (i have both) have something thats called special interests; well, there are different terms, one of those is special interest, other one is hyperfixation. The hyperfix is kinda like, you get obsesses with something, and start intensely researching/consuming/enjoying it for some time, like, it could be 2 weeks, it could be 2 months, you know, and then the obsession disappears and you go to the next thing. Special interest is like hyperfixation but on a grand scale, its a hyperfixation that never goes away in your life. For example, i, for most of my life, would have said that my biggest special interest is videogames, or science. But recently i realized its not. The reason im such a generalist and i look for any type of knowledge is because of my biggest special interest, which was difficult to identify. My most important, biggest, special interest, is the understanding of reality. Anything that is part of reality, anything that works under rules, any kind of reasoning, or proof, or thinking. Any kind of system. All of it. I need to understand all of it. Every possible system or rule. Thats my special interest, and thats weird because it has some unexpected consequences, like the need for being a generalist (thats more expected) or the indecision that comes with it. I cant choose just one or two things because in the long term, overall, i want to learn everything. I know this goal may seem unrealistic to most people, but remember the world is going to change in the next 10 years, in many multiple senses, so it may be possible to understand everything throughout the centuries. I really dont know. But i will never stop consuming knowledge

    • @vaughngene

I think having a lot of knowledge about different subjects is a good interest of its own.
Maybe not 'doing' them all per say, but having a lot of information and understanding about them may be all you actually want to do. I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

The best thing about your video is showing us how much we're not alone and we're all struggling with the same thing and trying to find a method that works.
Like so many people here I'm a motion designer (so animation, video editing, graphic design and everything 3D all included). Music is piano, singing, viola, and composing music. I also draw. And I absolutely love Japanese and I would like to learn German because it's in my family (my grandparents speak), and belly dancing, plus I'd love to learn hip hop dancing.
And all that juggling with depression, which I got better at, but the frustration of not dealing with everything is DAILY and destroys my mood. And many times I didn't socialise because I had to be productive.
Thank you for making this video and bringing us all together!
