Ahoy everyone!
My name is Nike and I have been living and sailing on my sailboat Karl since 2013. After a massive refit marathon, I finally cast off the lines and learnt to solo sail my 37-foot Reinke Super 10 that I called "Karl". I am publishing videos (at the moment every two weeks) about the ups and downs of living, repairing and sailing my boat.
Since January 2022, I have a new permanent crew member: my furry friend Boga. When I started out, I did not know much about boat repair or solo sailing. Since I am still out there, I hope that my story inspires others, to chase their dreams, even if they might think they are not cut out for it. There is always a way, so I'll see you out there!

Life gets lonely as you get older at the right time its nice to find someone to grow old with it makes life easier.

Showing the side of sailing that is not spoken about much. You make a lot of fast friends. In my life I have met people from all over the world that I see maybe every few years. When we do meet up it is like we just saw each other yesterday.

every time i see the word goodbye in the thumb nail I freak out . knowing that someday you may call it quits, and hoping Im not around to experience it. I've been keeping an eye on you almost from the beginning and have loved the adventure. thank you so much for just being you, through the good and the bad times.

The memories of the ties you forged with Marc are like music playing in the background, resonating even in the silence. Friendship is not measured in distance, but in songs, laughter and shared silences. I am reminded of something Robson Green said. He is a British actor who has done many fishing series travelling around the world and meeting interesting people.
He doesn't say goodbye, instead he says 'see you next time'. Might be subtle, but I like the sentiment.
Thinking it was Delos/Brady perhaps talking about goodbye vs. see ya later... I'm looking forward to saying see ya later to Vancouver island and sailing down to say hello!... keep smilin' :)

Think about sailing the Med..consider the the marina(s) in Porto, Portugal. History, culture and people would make for interesting viewing for many....(I used to have a house in Tamarindo...)
yes, the Med is super pretty. Spent many vacations down there.
The joy and fun of a cruiser's life comes with a price to pay... to say good bye is one of the hardest I guess.

A lot of experiences are hightened when living on a boat, the good ones and the bad ones ;) - at least from my experience, obviously could be different for others...I think I prefer it this way, though.

Are you still planning on taking Karl up the Pacific to Seattle WA? I kinda remember your first trips as you spoke of getting Karl to your home. You have been an inspiration to all of us.

Nikki: I hope your heart is not broken and if it is, that it is not badly broken and that it will heal fairly quickly. Some relationship start where both parties know that it will end, but knowing in advance doesn't necessarily make the ending part any easier.
There is always some sadness involved when a shared path is coming to a fork in the road and one goes left and the other right. But I carry some beautiful memories within my heart of this shared path and looking back at these months together on Karl will always bring a smile on my face.
Always wondered where the dog craps on board? My nephew trained his dog to crap in a sand pit, same for the boat?
She usually would do her deeds on shore...but if we are underway, she will go up on the bow and I will rinse it afterwards

The thing I like best about you, and it is something that tells a lot about you, is that you have stuck with Karl throughout. You probably could have changed, done something different, different boat or whatever, but you have stayed with Karl.
in an ever changing world with an ever changing playground to play in, a tiny bit of continuity is quite valuable :)))).

😁I wish I could take this compliment, but seriuosly, it`s that stupid camera. I cannot say I like it much...I mean don`t get me wrong, I don`t mind looking healthy...but I don`t like the rest of it...😄And since it seems to be on its way out anyhow, I will swap for a different one...
If you ever get lonely again, I will sail with you anywhere, anytime. I am an engineer, a sailor, I can fix things, speak Spanish too. I also enjoy my solitude from time to time but welcome a break also.
Great job putting that video together; it must have been a tough one. I was wondering if Boga is multilingual? Do you give commands in German, Spanish and English? I mostly just use hand signals with my furry friend.
yes, it was a bit of a tough one to put together which is why I was a bit late in putting it online...Boga is multilingual for sure. Marc talked to her in Catalán when she was little, I then mostly spoke Spanish with her in the beginning but all her commands are in English...just so it`s easier in case someone else has to "babysit" her ;). When I speak in German to her then it`s usually when she`s done something she is not supposed to do 😁But yes, most of her commands go hand in hand with a hand signal, too.
Spanish name is manzanilla de la muerte, "little apple of death".
Anyone who's fallen in love under those sorts of circumstances knows the weird feeling, especially as you board a plane home and feel utterly disconcerted that you are leaving a very special person behind. I think it is a difficult manoeuvre on board a 37' boat (can't recall Karl's LOA!) to double the human occupation. You are so used to being the only crew that it is nigh-on impossible to double that without getting on each others' nerves. I sometimes think that a relationship that I've hadended under the best conditions, with the romance partner being forced to leave by a 'situation' rather than because you cannot take another moment of their farting, halitosis, laziness, overactivity, different personality that just would never suit you. When I've been in that situation I've sobbed that they're going but laughed that I'm getting my independence back at long last!!! I hope whatever comes next for you is lovely Nike and that if it was meant to be it will do so, sooner or later. Certainly somebody with their own boat that you and he can mix and match.
I would struggle to leave you, your beautiful little dog and that lifestyle behind, and would be planning to return soon. Sometimes though maybe it is better, if painful, to have your total independence back. That is worth a price that cannot be quantified.
I believe that maintaining some sort of independence even within a romantic relationship is very important. Otherwise, you will be driven by the fear of losing someone which IMO is not very healthy. I am not saying that one does not care about losing someone if you keep your idenpendence, you will still be sad when it happens...but you won`t be constantly worried about the moment to come.
And yes, you got that LOA right, Karl is 37' ;)
