  • Bequia is officially one of our favorite islands in the Caribbean. Come with us as we explore the boardwalk of this super cruiser-friendly island. We also run out of cash and out of food 😬. Luckily we find an ATM and Billy shows us he can survive off the sea if need be.

Back in the 80s I sailed into Bequia and I still remember how beautiful it is. I had a chance to taste smoked whale meat while I was there. We were a group of 5 sailboats and we met a kid that offered his guide services to us using a bag of mangoes as a "bribe". We hired him and when we were ready to leave, his grandma (he was an orphan) begged us to allow him become a "stowaway". So later on we all pitched in with legal aid to make him a legal resident and later a citizen of the US. He learned a lot about sailboats and opened his own business to maintain and repair boats.

You know, those kinds of stories just don't seem very common these days. I am glad to hear they still happen. As for whaling, commercial and pro whaling has killed 100,000s of them. But if a few communities want to hunt 4 per year, that's fine. Only a handful of them still exist. Well, thanks for the adventure story. And I really hope that young men found his North Star.

From Louise. In New Zealand we call the sea urchin, Kina. It is definitely an acquired taste. The orange part that you eat is called the roe. My husband, Paul, only used to eat the roe but now eats the whole lot. He acquired the taste over time. Love watching your adventures and love Jetty.

I have had time to think about this. On the opening intro where you say "Hop on board" and then a couple of seconds Sierra dives off the bow of the dingy. Mentally I think instead of Hop on board it should say dive on in as she hits the water. (Obviously I have been self quarantined too long.) Like this video.

The Apple fruit is a Golden apple and it has a star seed. Take the thin skin off and rub salt or sea water on the fruit and then eat it. It also is great if you dice it and put it in a fruit salad.

Really nice island. Like some Bahamian places in the oftbeaten path. I was wondering if you plan to keep some urchin shells as decoration. They are pretty brittle.
Under the pier on St. Croix there must be hundreds of them. Awesome watching them crawl around. Just drop a rock or something onto the sand and they chase the vibration. Bottom feeders.

That fruit is called a Golden Apple. You can eat it green with salt and pepper(optional).
When ripe or golden yellow, eaten the same way.
The Dasheen root is the same thing they call poi in Hawaii. You can boil it in salted water, peeled and eaten as a vegetable. It is usually white to purple in color.
The sea urchin or Sea Egg is a delicacy in the islands. It is usually eaten cooked or baked.

You should have gone to princess margaret beach and walked up the hill. There are stairs learing off of the beach where the bar and restaurant are. Its the only one on princess margaret if memory serves correct. Theres an abundance of avocados growing there and also passionfruit and bananas. The little green thing is a passion fruit split it in half youll suck the seeds then spit them out . Or make juice with it. You can also freeze it. It lasts forever. Cheapest place to eat is at the local book shop in town. Theres a local elementary school teacher named cheryl she has a restaurant behind the bookstore. Best food in town.
Also the kids at the local are very good for eyes and ears on the ground. Slip them five bucks and if youre going walkabout they'll keep an eye on your boat, outboard whatever. Friendliest people i ever met were in bequia.

    Hi guys,
At 13:51 mark those are called golden apples. Peel off the skin and eat the flesh. You'll know how deep to go as the seed is soft n spiky looking and the flavor isn't as strong closer to it.
If you ever make it to Antigua, be sure to let me know. I am there between mid Dec - mid June. And Antigua uses the same EC currency. Not sure if you're interested but look up Antigua Sailing Week. It's an annual event but with today's situation, it has been cancelled along with a lot of other events.

Hey Guys, I hope this information helps you guys out.
The Bahamian money you can covert back into USD as they are 1:1 exchange rate.
Roti - its pronounced ROW TEE not Roadie
It is eaten through out the Caribbean and orginated from Indian when many migrated to the West Indies to work on the sugar plantations.
So yes similar to a Burrito but all west indian flavors which is normally curry based depending on the island you go. Some Roti's may even have stuffed yellow split peas in them also.
    Vegetable from the Farmers Market:
Cristfine - You can use it in salads, stirfrys, or if you bake fish add it along with green & red peppers and sliced onions.
The root vegetable is also known as Tarro or edos. When you peel them they are a little slimy but you can slice it up and fry them similar to making home fires with potatoes.
The large one you guys have you can technically bake it with salt and pepper and you good.
    The small oval green fruit.
they are called Golen Apples or Ppommecythere - you can eat them when they are green and sour with a little Salt and Pepper.
When they are ripe they go yellow and they are sweet.
The seed inside is very Spiney looking seed.

So if I understand what I saw at the dock, you anchored the stern of the dinghy and then tied the bow off to the dock, kind of a modified Bahama mooring. So other than preventing the dinghy from swinging on a bow mooring and thus preventing damage and being considerate to others that might want to use the dock - was there a reason you did that? Maybe you always have done it and I just missed it, but I am going to stow that idea into my bag of tricks.

Am curious ! Have seen sailboats using kites for propulsion with extreme results . Your kite-surfing rig may be somewhat small , but I would like to see you use it while under-way ( at least once ) 'with the wind' just for fun ! ! It is at least an auxiliary power unit should you lose your mast and motor is out of gas ! !

What kind of anchor do you use for your dingy? Would it be good for a jet ski ?

Definitely Beau and Brandy. Their solar panels give it away.

I'll pass on the urchin. The lobsters looked good though.

So beautiful. Want to go there. Please begin operating with social distance. By now coronavirus is everywhere and you can't see it. If you get it bad, your fun will be over for a long time. Impossible to not both get it if one does in small spaces.
