SAILING off DESPITE ANXIETY: Woman sailing SOLO from Colombia to Ecuador - UNTIE THE LINES IV #38

  • It's been a while since I sailed a multiple day passage all by myself...so my belly is a little upside down with my usual pre-departure anxiety nausea. But it's time to untie the lines and to sail down 500nm to Ecuador.
    The passage will be a bit of a challenge due to the strong currents and partially light and turning winds...Both conditions in which it is good to have a working autopilot. Too bad if that precious tool stops working about half way through the trip...
    Ahoy and Enjoy,
    Nike & Karl

    Crying is our built-in healing system. Women...we sometimes wear our emotions on our sleeves, not knowing why we feel the way we do when the tears flow. And, the more we try and fight it back the greater the flow. IMHO, I say, "let it flow". A good cry is a purging of sorts-it unburdens us of mental baggage we lug around. Crying often gives clarity needed to make big, important decisions, and you can count on it to put you in touch with empathy for other people. It's the steam valve on our emotional teakettle. Crying has valuable mental and physical benefits. Tears banish stress hormones such as cortisol as well as other toxins that accumulate when we feel stressed. You have the right to cry if and when you want to. I applaud you for sharing. 👏👏👏👏👏👍

    Eric Hiscock said in "Cruising Under Sail", a man who doesn't feel some trepidation prior to a voyage, is a fool. That trepidation will keep you safe, and ensure you check everything before you cast off... Good advice... The way you ripped apart the autopilot twice, shows your confidence is growing... Some people can't lift the skin on a rice pudding let alone strip and reassemble an electronic piece like you do. Well done...

Since I’ve been stuck on docks most of the last two years I can tell you the intensity of the anxiety and nervousness about the risks gets worse. I am almost fixed now (still in Key West) and will head to Haiti and South for the hurricane season, end game is for Ecuador in two to three years. There I will find that “little house”. 😁

    Hi
    My opinion is you have to make the windvane work before going out into the Pacific Ocean. I did a 4 year solo circumnavigation and did not have autopilot only a windvane and it worked fine,
    even with a lot of wind at the cape horn. The only time I missed the autopilot was when it was no wind at all. The windvane ruled 99% of the time. Never trust on a autopilot if you
    plan to sail solo over long distances, remember K.I.S.S ("keep it simple, stupid")😊.

    • @WhiteSpotPirates
      @WhiteSpotPirates  5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Hi there, thanks for the advise. Usually, my wind vane works pretty fine, especially in strong winds. On this passage, I had very light to no wind with strong currents (1.5 to 3) against me which was the reason why the wind vane was not working properly. A wind vane - as the name states - needs wind to function...I could have just bobbed around waiting for wind, sure. The problem was that I did not have three weeks time to do the 500 miles because I had promised a friend to help her with a charter. I had enough time not to be stressed, but not enought time to just wait at sea for days for some wind to pick up.
      Everybody has their own preferences on how they like to run their boat and what instruments they think are needed. I think it's super great you did your circumnavigation only with a wind vane and that this set up worked for you. I prefer to have an autopilot with me as well, it served me very well during the last years and I would not want to miss it for those times of very little to no wind when I have to motor.

      Yes I know, it's just that I've seen so many tired sailors come into the harbor after sailing a long passage when their autopilot has broken down. I probably want to buy an autopilot myself if I choose to go on a long trip again, since I know how tired you get by sailing alone and at the same time having to steer by hand. I just wanted to say that one cannot rely on an autopilot, but it can be a very useful device especially near the equator or in narrow fjords.
      (Sorry bad English)
      Greetings from Norway

      As an electrical engineer who designs portable equipment, I think you need to buy a spare autopilot module. Your repair methods (non-ESD-safe, saltwater contamination, etc.) are going to risk losing the electonics. Salt water leaves a residue of conductive and corrosive matter that play havoc with the sensitive electronics in the autopilot. If you want to do repair onboard, do a swap with the spare and set up a workstation inside the boat with compressed air, cleaning solvents, soldering station, etc..

  • @conradpreen2368
    @conradpreen2368 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Autopilot fail - been there done that ... the problem in my case was a poor connection in 12v power coming into the unit. Definitely a thing to check before taking the autopilot apart. As Dan Kinsbury says taking electronics apart in the cockpit is more likely to do harm than good. In the end the sea wins anyway so don't worry. Wind in your sails !!!

    Wow, I have not really done much YouTubing, re. sailng, since coming to shore.
    Seeing you and your concerns was definitely familiar to me. I left San Diego, with NO working electronics, so had to sail entirely manually, around the Bahas and up to to Puerto Penasco, MX, with minor help from my 10 year old son. We sailed on a 35' Stay-sail Ketch... not too fast, and feared sailing at night, given no radio either!
    I got them (entire family: son, daughter and mother) to La Pas, where they left me to deal with their parental family in Chile.
    After a few weeks, I got a saved Pit Bull -- 2 months old, then. He adapted ot the water life quite well, so we continued up north after another couple of months. Lots of concerns, but we enjoyed Island hoping during the day.
    No recommendations for Penasco, if you ever go this way.

    I couldn’t do what you have so regardless despite all the difficulties you have encountered well done.

      Hi David,
      hehe, yes, you are right, I had plenty of ideas and dreams in my head, I still do. I am taking life as it presents itself to me and this is the outcome so far ;). I have had some major set backs and repairs to tackle in the last years. Some of them took a lot of time and money and some set me back in the trust for my vessel that I had to rebuild.
      I have learnt that plans are written in sand at low tide and that accepting that is better than fighting against that. I do understand that people rather want to see the "big things" happening and that that's what fascinates most. For me, giving myself time to live my life the way I do and the ability to see a bit more of the world than those who rush through has been working very well for me and I am enjoying it.
      That said, I cannot tell you if or when I will do a longer crossing, sorry.

    • @WhiteSpotPirates
      @WhiteSpotPirates  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Hi Steven, on this particular passage, the wind was very shifty to non existent. I was running my main sail and my Genoa. When I motor sail, I usually put a reef into my main so it does not flop around too much. Since the wind went up and down, you often see me running the main in the first reef still. That's often because I am either just pulling the Genoa out shortly to see if the wind will stay up or because there are nasty cloulds close by that could possibly indicate a squall coming through.
      I always, well let's say 95% of the time, have one reef in the main as soon as it gets dark. That's just for safety because you cannot watch the sky as well as you can during the day.
      Karl is an early reefer which sometimes means that I start reefing when we reach 15 knots or more. He won't lose any speed at this point but will saill more upright. Also, I feel better prepared in case the wind starts to increas. Lot's of decisions are done because I sail fairly defensive due to being by myself and valueing safety over speed.

    Time to upgrade to a better tiller pilot (perhaps pelagic) or find the money for a good under deck unit. If you can’t rely on your wind vane you’ve got to have a reliable auto pilot. Don’t listen to the naysayers, you’re living life on your own terms and fear is very much a part of that adventure, SAIL ON!!!

    Do you set an alarm on your phone ?

      Hi Matthew, I set an alarm on my phone and depending on weather and traffic I usually sleep between 10 to 30 minutes. In this passage I had to hand steer for hours so I could not do my usual napping under way so I hove to once a day to get 3 to 4 hours of sleep.

    I would cover those Exposed electronic components with the proper Silicon Glue that is used to make electronics waterproof. I am actually a bit surprised to see the components simply exposed like that.
    There are a lot of ways to make electronic circuits and the connector and wires waterproof, assuming the problem was water. But specially in a boat I would make sure that vital electronic components inside would be sealed to sustain water. Specially the autopilot that is clearly exposed to the environment, that PCB electronic board should be covered in those silicon glue/epoxy or the specialized Conformal coatings.
    If you fix that one and get a new one make sure to apply those products ... conformal coating, silicon glue or even epoxy. Otherwise you risk the same result, that is water damage. Sea water in particular is the number one killer of electronics.

    Hi Captain, nice to listen your thoughts. If a electronic device got Water while it is connected to the powerlines it will fail. Some times you have a few seconds to disconnect the powerlines or the Battery if you can reach her to save the device. Otherwise the electrolysis and the shortcutting currents start to damage the device immediatley. Never trust such a device after that. If you know that the device wasn´t connectet to any kind of power and the moisture exists only a few hours in the device you can try to let it completely dry out and I mean absolutely dry and only then reconnect and try to restart it. Do not dismantle under wet conditions and without experience of this special device. There ist one good Product that gives you a little more time for disconnecting your device from the powerlines in the case that it got water. This is Universal XANOXX Water -Defender Spray. This also prevents your electronic contacts from corrosion. And : disconnect the Powerlines bevore using this spray economical!
    You know the german saying: "Aller guten Dinge sind zwei !" I wish you always a good alternator !

    tiller pilots aren really suitable for offshore,
    you can probably make a working one more suitable by encapsulating the electronics
    The important stuff like the fluxgate compass is already encapsulated, the rest of the device is for driving the rudder
    seems to me a ore powerful ram attached to those electronics would better suffice

    These small autopilots aren't the most reliable in my experience. May be you should use it only on windless days. I don't think that current is such an issue, I sail in North Brittany where we have lot of it (up to 10 knots) and autopilots work well as long as boat is balanced and sea state isn't too choppy.

    • @WhiteSpotPirates
      @WhiteSpotPirates  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The current was an issue because the Wind was so low. When u have 5kts of Wind and 2 to 3 od current then it's hard for the wind vane to keep the boat on course

      @@camilarose5429 There will be about 4 episodes about Ecuador, I think.
      I cleared in in Bahia Solano and it was Quite simple. I did it through the marina beacause i did Not have much Time and it is easier than travelling all the way to Manta.
      When we went to cruise the shoreline, I issued a zarpe for Salinas (50$) and just stopped along the shoreline wherever I wanted and showed Them the zarpe for Salinas saying i was on my way there which was sufficient.
      U cannot just move wihout any notice but if u at least have some zarpe they don't really mind what u do.

      Whether I stay in Bahia de Caraquez or Salinas is up in the air since there is very little info posted, mostly negative it seems. Ecuador doesn't seem cruiser friendly." Salinas concerns me due to dinghy access and lack of protection (since I plan to anchor). Bahia is protected but dirty water and further away from Guayaquil which is where my kids live.

      Hm, I might have had my head lamp tied around my wrist because I tend to misplace it and then not find it when I need it.
      I am wearing a safety harness all the time that is connected to a lifeline that starts in the middle of my hard dodger and goes all the way to the bow through the middle of the boat. That way I can jump up and run forward if I have to but I can also reach tiller and sheets in the cockpit. That's most likely the line that you saw.

      I see in youre comnents you got a autopilot you like. Thats great . Um buy another exactly like it. 2 autopilots with a working windvane is real freedome
      After 30 years of mostly solo sailing and somewhere near 100,000 miles i still get that same feeling you describe at the start. I call it port demere as its gone after the first day. Or if i have crew i never feel it at all. Its a mind set.

      @@kevincostner9734 Hi Kevin, usually, I have a backup for my autopilot. But the backup of this one had already be harvested too often for spares in this particular moment which is why it did not help much. But I should have replaced it earlier, you are right.
      I did get a back up for the autopilot plus I got an arm that I can connect to my wind vane for heavier weather. So I have four alternatives now which is great!
      Thanks for sharing that you still have the same feelings pre-departure. I don't get it as much with crew, either and usually it's gone a couple of hours after departure once things have settled a bit.
