The Many Liveries of the DC class Diesel Locomotives

  • The DC diesels have been a classic part of New Zealand's railway history. There were 85 locomotives in this class, and they were all rebuilt from the once 146-strong DA class (EMD G12 locomotives) in five years between 1978 and 1983.
The engines were once a common sight on both passenger and freight trains throughout New Zealand, but nowadays there are only around 18 of them still in service with KiwiRail. Six DCs have been saved for preservation so far, at the time of uploading. The preserved DCs are 4248, 4369, 4375, 4536, 4818 and 4876.
This video showcases all but two of the liveries that these classic diesel locomotives have carried since 1978, when the rebuilt DA 1525 re-entered service as DC 1551 (later renumbered to DC 4006). The only exceptions are Kiwi Lager (only carried by DC 4093) and Tranz Scenic blue (carried by DCPS 4559, 4628 and 4761), as I never saw those liveries when they were actually going around.
We start with the classic International Orange or 'Fruit Salad' livery, and finish with the still-new Martinus Rail livery. The latter is only carried by four DCs that are now running in Australia; namely 4041, 4444, 4571 and 4692.
Since I forgot to mention it in the video, I might as well mention the DC's wheel arrangement here in the description. These locomotives have an A1A-A1A wheel arrangement, which means they have two 3-axle bogies with the centre axles being unpowered. In other words, they have only four powered axles out of six, and this proved to be a problem for DC 4588 when she was running in Tasmania.

Cool video! Its cool to see the history of the DC locomotives paint schemes. I've always been a fan of the Tranz Rail years.

Lets hope DCs 4790 and 4260 stay, they are my favorite units.
4790 has a DA cow catcher and 4260 has the legendary phase 2 livery

      Phase 1 actually. If 4260 doesn't get preserved, I won't be bothered because there's already six DCs in preservation (4248, 4369, 4375, 4536, 4818 and 4876)

If you could do something about nz rail, it’s privatisation, sale to Toll rail & eventual buyback by the govt it would be great.

Fruit salad was the best livery.
