Gotta agree with how poorly they handled Lusamine here. The way they handled her motivation just felt...clumsily handled, especially with some of her mannerisms still in tack from the previous games. Like, they wanted to change her...but also wanted to kinda keep her how she was. And since Lusamine became one of my favorite gaming villains after playing Sun...this was massively disappointing for me...
I feel maybe Lusamine Could've been obsessed with ultra necrozma rather that trying to save the world from it. That would've fit in more with the "psychotic beautiful pokemon obsession" angle of her personality.

Honestly, I disagree with the general consensus people seem to have of "don't get US/UM if you've played Sun/Moon". I found that the side quests helped a lot with the pacing if you actually did them and that the battles against Ilima and the Pokemon School Principal added some much needed challenge to the early game.
I might tell Pokemon I will start a campaign to change Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, & Ultra Moon. Kukui becomes the villain (Ultra Emperor starting in Aether Paradise), E4: Hala, Olivia, Molayna, Kahili, Champion Lusamine; Tapu Naga, guardian of Alola (Dragon/Fairy Type), N in US/UM with Plasma's return in RR2: Resurrection Kukui.
I think the reason for all those downsides is because Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon was developed by the younger team of Game Freak as Kazumasa Iwao directed USUM and not Shigeru Ohmori or Junichi Masuda while the more veteran team like Shigeru Ohmori and Junichi Masuda were developing Pokemon for the Switch. In a way, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon was something to fill in while GameFreak was working on the next big game on the Switch.

USUM is the most divisive and hated entry in the Pokemon main series, next to Gen 6. But holy Alolan Muk! I did not expect to have the tally count for USUM to be *1 point apart* from being tied!
I think Gen 6 would have been more successful if it got a Pokémon Gray or a X/Y 2 to serve as a sequel and expand the story and region of Kalos (as the games definitely could have had a bit more tightening in game play and more content).
I think it's because they expected something like Black & White 2 and not what Crystal, Emerald and Platinum were, it's the same but with new things, don't get me wrong I think that would be the reason.
I will say, I completely disagree when it comes to Lusamine. I thought Lusamine was not only the worst thing about Sun and Moon by a long way but that her portrayal in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon was WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better. First off, my problem with Lusamine in Sun and Moon... she has absolutely no agency and is responsible for none of her actions. Because of this, any personality traits she exhibited are voided by the fact "a Nihilego made her do it". That is one of my biggest villain peeves, when they try to make a villain sympathetic by taking away their agency and making them blameless. As such, she doesn't actually develop because she just immediately reverts back to her normal personality after Lillie helps to save her. I mean they hint towards her having issues beforehand but that description falls completely in line with her Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon portrayal and is still completely different to how she acts when she's possessed. Speaking of, onto why Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon did this better... Because of the shift of focus to Necrozma, Lusamine is able to take an anti-hero role. This works perfectly with her actual personality, that of a selfish mother obsessed with achieving glory at any cost and who expects her children to merely fall in line. Her goals are noble, her methods are still well... less than rosy. But the best part? She's actually responsible for what she's doing! She's not just some poor damsel, she's doing bad things for reasonable reasons because she came to those decisions all by herself and not because some space parasite is making her do it. Now them not showing the conversation between Lillie and Lusamine is a little annoying... but still understandable because we kinda had a big space dragon to deal with and we only had one ride available so I guess it explains what Lillie and co were doing rather than just twiddling their thumbs. And Lillie got even more development in the postgame than in the original so it doesn't bother me much. TL;DR Anti-hero Lusamine > "Villain" Lusamine... and Ghetsis still best villain (I LOVED his portrayal in the Rainbow Rocket story! :D)
Now the question is which version will GF remember? the anime already used a middle point version of both, and the Adventures manga is using the og Lusamine.
OG!Lusamine is more memorable by default; USUM!Lusamine is shadow of her former self that makes Game!Lysandre look like the greatest character in the history of Pokemon (hint: he's NOT; both PokeSpecial/Adventures AND the anime did much better with him!) As for Anime!Lusamine... I don't mind her, honestly; she's eccentric and overbearing, but it works with the lighter tone and her different relationships with her two children are, while not super-compelling at least somewhat fun to watch. Her characterisation there after all, doesn't have ANY bearing on the anime writers being SO STUPID, they did NOT make Lillie's "Z-Powered Form" her permanent outfit from then on like in the games (because it's WAY superior and has more character, objectively, PERIOD!), so the fact they actually still adapted the "Motherbeast" arc is good enough for me... As Logan points out, USUM doesn't mesh with keeping Gladion and Lillie the same, but at least the anime actually made an EFFORT to not make the story a mess! That's without even getting into the URS barely having any real significance... Imagine for a moment, if we DID get a sequel: a story with a new trainer starting out with their own rival(s) and maybe some new Trial Captains (and Mina having her trial ready); if it's not just right on the heels of SM but a couple years later, bring a slightly-older Lillie back from Kanto as a trainer, with Lusamine in a new state and Gladion still running Aether Foundation; then the URS come with warnings about Necrozma, and Gladion (still with baggage on his mother) takes USUM!Lusamine's role in trying to do the wrong thing for the right reasons and through it, comes to forgive his mother by understanding her... You can definitely have Team Rainbow Rocket easily, so no worries there! Also of course, bring in Mohn with an actual character ARC instead of a lazy patch-job (just like USUM!Lillie resolving things with Mummy off-SCREEN... seriously, at least her taking her mother to find help and become a trainer in Kanto was character PROGRESSION).

I think one of the details I like the most in the Ultra games, other than the obvious added sidequests, is the more subtle changes done to mess with your expectations. The best example is the water trial. If you've played S/M, you expect Lana to be a pathological liar and that you will fight the totem Wishiwashi without her telling you about it. But she acts very nonchalant and direct in her statements of the Wishiwashi being the boss. It feels uncanny and off, but you don't question it Seeing that Araquanid come up instead is absolutely spectacular. Lana's character as a massive troll is preserved, the twist is great, and non of it would work if you hadn't played S/M before.
FM: THAT was a close call. Me: NO KIDDING! I UNDERSTAND YOUR CONCERN FOR THE BAD PARTS, BUT JESUS J. JIZZ, MAN! THAT ALMOST..........almost..........oh, fuck it. I'm at least glad that you have more good than bad. Even if the good won by a mere 2%.
I definitely would've preferred a sequel, but I did enjoy most of the things these games brought about. The unfortunate degradation of Lusamine ,and subsequently her kids, sucks big time, but Necrozma made a huge glow up (pun fully intended). I also found it was pretty dark in some areas, need I mention the haunted trainer school or Ultra Ruin being a wrecked AU Hau'Oli. And while final boss Hau was cool, Kukui was way better. Here's hoping Pokemon Switch is able to make up for those shortcomings
I hate to be that guy, but you missed a negative. The National dex is still MIA. It doesn't matter if you give it a face and sort of personality if it doesn't do it's intended purpose like it's supposed to. I initially thought that they had held off on it so they could introduce new Pokémon mid-gen and have their official dex order make sense, but nope. Still missing over half their creations and can't be bothered to so much as reuse old descriptions. All in all the games were still good. I mean, come on it's Pokémon, but they just weren't necessary and most of it felt like I paid $40 to replay what I already owned.
i figured that the issue was that there were just way too many pokemon already so it would just take too much space. making the pokedex smaller also makes the challenge of completely filling it a little bit easier when otherwise the difficulty would just keep increasing and incresing with every new game released. now the challenge is a bit more on the same level as some of the earlier games. also now you can fill the pokedex mostly by yourself without just getting most of them from trades because the dex is small enough to fit all it's pokemon into the same region.
well there things i'd change I really liked roto boost there optional but I mainly use em post game also they now released the starters hidden abilities...so yeah and the tuturial and ending weren't three hours long
A lot of the messed parts you had barely affected my overall experience with Ultra Moon. While not everything was perfect, Ultra Moon took everything I loved about the original Moon and multiplied it to levels I didn't think were imaginable while simultaneously adding in many new things to make it its own thing. For the final hurrah for Pokemon on 3DS and probably Pokemon on handheld in general, it was a dang good one in my opinion. Also, I actually really liked the photo booth, especially when a team member evolved, and thought what they did with the Rotom Dex was fine.
What was so special about Lusamine? To me she seemed generic in the original game, and the "redemption" at the end seemed forced. Idk maybe I'm just used to deeper character development, I didn't mind this change.
In Sun and Moon she was bat shit crazy due to a lot of things! Mohn disappearing and Nihilego venom being the two things into that mess. USUM has her with the Mohn trauma but none of the Nihilego venom messing with her, still crazy and abusive but USUM made her much more human and told us the players what did sent her off the deep end. Fact that USUM gave us closure that S/M never did is another thing I prefer over the original, only trade off is that Lillie's plot is NOT the center focus of USUM which is what makes the every joe over look it as a "Butchering" of her story. (Less focus does make her weaker in the main... but the things happening at post game make up for it!)
I can’t believe you didn’t mention the best new thing that USUM added: MANTINE SURF! Not only is it a surprisingly fun minigame, it’s also an easy way to get BP for those sweet, sweet move tutors.
Eh, I don't really see how anyone can say Lusamine is made particularly noble or good. She's still pretty self-centered, can still be rather nasty to her kids and overall still has, uh, issues (the fact that she's still freezing Pokémon alive should make that pretty clear), she's just made morally gray as opposed to crossing over into complete sociopathic territory. She's still a villain, but more of an "ends justify the means" villain rather than a complete monster. Both Lusamines are interesting for different reasons. That said, while I have no problem with the changes in Lusamine's character, the fact that Gladion and Lillie's arcs are weakened because of the change is something I can't help but be forced to agree with, partly because their arc doesn't really fit in with the slightly different direction their mother went with.
ShutUpAdachi In USUM, she appears more as narcissistic and naive. This leads to her going into Ultra Megolopolis and pissing off the eldritch prism dragon god. In vanilla SM, her mind was already deteriorating as she was doping on space jellyfish neurotoxins for years. At that point, her love is a instinctive defensive mechanism for the Nihilego. That too is pretty eldritch in concept.
This may be because i just finished the RR episode, but can half a point be awarded for Faba's comeuppance & another half for the fact that Guzma just stands there holding back those two Rocket Grunts with his bare hands, not letting them do anything? Those two scenes cracked me up so much
I was surprised to find this video in my recommendations, and to see an ancient friend making ultra high quality content on a high-scale now. Congrats on that. As for this video, I do agree with most of the points on both sides, especially when it comes to stuff like the first 20 hours/pre-poni stuff being an awful drag and the move tutors being a handy help. Still though, the lack of the national dex/not including legends and island scan mons in it is the biggest flaw against this game for me and I was surprised to not even see the lack of a national dex acknowledged.
IMO, The National Dex can fuck itself dead as long as every Pokemon is present. Granted, the newest games don' have that, but I think what did make it in is great. Shame about Zoroark and Lopunny, but odds are they'll make it the next go round...
This is a problem I don’t have with just USUM, but gen 7 in general. Why does Game Freak insist on ditching the main concept of gen 6 in general (being Mega Evolution, of course) to make an entirely new one? It would’ve been easy to just incorporate Megas into the story, but they seem to want to rid everything of gen 6. Even Zygarde. Poor thing.
I actually really liked US/UM Lusamine. An ambiguously evil prospective defender who is willing to go to extreme lengths to protect Alola is much more interesting than..._she's craaaazy!_ And Lillie and Gladion being opposed to her due to discomfort with her methods/fear for her safety adds a nice layer of complexity to their relationships. Not to mention that Mohn's disappearance is actually touched upon and explored a bit as opposed to it being missable background details. Also, I don't quite understand why Roto Loto is such an issue when you could easily just not use it. It and the Exp Share only make the game easier if you let them.
Paraster the thing is that Lillie story was tied to that craizy mother she had in the original S&M and, since that is gone in USUM, Lillie's quest (and Gladion as well) feel pointless. And that's without counting other issues with the story... Edit: A big plot hole like this: the Ultra Recon Squad actually had a Solgaleo or Lunala (depending of the verison) that you use to go where Necrozma is after it captures Nebby so... Why Nebby had to transform in the legendary Pokemon in the first place? (In fact, if Nebby didn't transform, it would not have been absorbed by Necrozma). The Ultra Recon Squad technically wants to stop Necrozma, right? So... Why they didn't mention they already had a Pokemon able to go to Ultra Splace? Unless they captured just before Nebby transforms (something they don't mention).
@@jowysw Late answer but they didn't offer their legendary because they mistrusted Lusamine, which they were proven correct later on. The squad wanted to just stop Necrozma, Lusamine wanted to destroy it.

You know, I’m a diehard Pokémon fan, and this is the only pokemon game so far that I DON’T want to play. Sun and Moon were fine, but they were just... uninteresting to me. I saw USUM, and immediately realized I probably wouldn’t like it. Despite that, I kept my hopes up that it would be good, but further trailers only made certain this belief. I get that the this game was sort of like BW2 in that it was made to keep fans happy while a game on a newer system was being made, but those games were awesome. Anyway, here’s hoping that Pokemon Switch can resolve the fans’ issues with the games.

Very complete overview, there. The only things I would've liked to see touched upon as well are the blatant difficulty increase, and the modifications brought to most important Trainers' teams. In my opinion, the former is +2 Good (actually challenging fights were a welcome addition, but stuff like Ultra Necrozma and Totem Ribombee VERY nearly crossed the "actual bullshit" line), and the latter is +1 Good. (apart from a few questionable choices like Lusamine trading her Mismagius for a Lopunny, a lot of these changes were for the better. I am SO glad they finally gave Guzma a Vikavolt, and Gladion having a Zoroark is nothing short of a perfect fit)
I’ve heard that GameFreak is under a lot of stress to get Pokémon for the Switch out by 2018, which is honestly concerning. They’re basically trying to get a new game out every year which isn’t the most comfortable feeling.
Lusamine legitimately terrified me in the original games. The first villain who's evil felt... real. The ultra games butchered her and I just can't believe it

Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon to me were just an alternate timeline to the original gen 7 stuff. I never played the OG Sun/Moon, so this may be why I like it so much. Also, can we point out Ultra Necrozma and its godly themes? I know it was mentioned but still. It needs more credit for fighting something more powerful than a Pokemon GOD.
I feel that the OG Sun and Moon were what Alola was truly meant to be, US/UM were all of the things they couldn’t have the time to add on the gameplay front. So Alola is basically fragmented into two. Or maybe I’m just saying that since the original Sun and Moon are my favorite Pokémon games, period. ...I just wish they kept the Lusamine story intact. That was amazing. Heck, Nihilego is my third-favorite Pokémon of all time!
I was fine with how the game was going until I got to Acerola's trial. From that point to Po Town and then the Aether Paradise, it was exactly the same as the originals, and felt like a slog to get through.
i actually quite enjoy the photo club, it's a very cute addition that can really bring out the creativity and personality of you and others. however there are a LOT of things that work against it such as the angles you can take pictures are severely lacking, the inability to place your trainer character in various different area's, the VERY small area you can place your pokemon and still have them pose, not being able to pause the pokemon's poses, turning causes the box placement to enlarge and thus more restriction, not being able to use multiple pokemon in a photo so group shots ae impossible... there are many more things i can say about this feature that i wish they had tweaked more, but over all i personally love the photo club with all the restrictions placed upon you, you really have to get creative, which i enjoy. the pokemon not pausing their animations makes it feel like trying to get that perfect picture of your pet dog, and that can take hundreds of tries, so it's realistic. the locales they use are all gorgeous and thus make for some amazing scenes, all the poses the pokemon can pull off can also make for some great scenes. so many good things, so many lack luster things i really hope in the next installment that game freak will highly consider keeping it around
The thing I loved most about Kukui being the Champion of the Elite Four was that HE was ME. He was a guy who got into Pokemon at a young age, just as I first started playing Pokemon Yellow at the age of 11. He grew up with Pokemon just as I did. He kept the love of Pokemon just like I did. And he helped the next generation learn to love Pokemon just like I'm doing with my own nephew. It felt like, in a way, I was the final boss of Sun and Moon.
Not gonna Lie that gameplay WAS improved over S/M in USUM, but I can't deny when it pulls the "One step forward, two steps back" approach to Story. WHY did Lillie's Character Arc get Bastardized as much as it did? That Touching scene between her and the Player Character on Exeggutor Island? Non-existent! Confronting her MOM after she goes Batshit insane? Also gone! The ANIME portrays Lusamine better than USUM's story does! Gladion's whole purpose for stealing Type:Null and joining Team Skull to Rebel against Lusamine? Pointless! All for WHAT?! A New Trial, some Different Totems, and a few Extra Scenes involving Hau and our Starter?! To quote AGVN: WHAT THE FUCK WERE THEY FUCKING THINKING?!
eh....I feel the story was a improvement overall hoenstly...sucks that the island scene is gone but we still know enough about her and how she chanes.... her mom isn't as crazy in this game...that's the thing about lusamien...so while the talkwas off screen mainly...we still see some of them interacting and well...how they get along and we see lusamine try to become a better person in like post game. how does the anime portray lusamine better? gladion still stole type null to get stronger and get away from lusamine....not really pointless but also to protect his family by becoming stronger (like lillie) and maybe lusmaien if she came to her senses. the new trial was cool....different totems and scenes were nice to...some other stuff aswell
This is probably what I'd reference as a good place to get an idea of my feelings towards USUM, honestly I can't say I disagree with really anything in the video since, well yeah, downgrades on the story in favor of the new content to a game(s) that already was great on its own kinda feels... no. I mean dont get me wrong, I like Poipole, its evolution, the whole thing w/ rainbow rocket, the new boost of growth for Hau, and especially Dusk Form Lycanroc (despite it being just a recolor with differing stats to the other forms) but even so. Similar opinions, thanks for a good video, and I can't wait to see what comes up
Dont want to be that guy, but I found the lusamine arc to be somewhat interesting. Not as interesting as the originals, but interesting nonetheless. The arc wasn’t about lusamine is trying to save everyone because she is selfless, she is trying to save everyone because of her massive ego. She only does this for recognition and show, and thats why she goes to such extremes to do it. I dont know. I like the game because extended postgame is a thing 0ω~ Also I like shiny things
Honestly, my main problem with USUM was that they weren`t really different enough to warrant playing. I really wished they went all-out with changing _all_ of the details to really make it seem like an "alternate" story. For one, they could have altered the entire Alolan Dex to lack all of the non-Gen 7 and non-Alolan Form Mons and then thrown in everything else that wasn`t there to quite literally make the roster of catchable Mons as different as reasonably possible, but instead they simply added more things to catch. Because of this, there is basically no reason to play SM if you already have USUM-there were enough upgrades but not as many changes to set it apart as an "alternate" game like it was promised to be. The concept could have worked-they just needed to change more just for the sake of making it different.
Blessed: difficulty increase and Mantine Surf After Gen 6, Most complain about the newer games being too easy, and the first set of gen 7 are no different. As for the revisit, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are a bit more challenging than Sun and Moon. It’s a slight difficulty increase, but an increase nonetheless. As for Mantine Surf, it’s a fun mini game and a fun way to travel between the islands of Alola. Messed: lack of more Regional variants.
Yeah your advice at the end makes perfect sense. I never played Sun or Moon but got Ultra Sun and absolutely love it. One should really choose Sun/Moon OR Ultra Sun/Moon and not get both unless they're a super fan.

Honestly, the one interesting thing I find about this game is that the main antagonist is a pokemon. We have never had the main antagonist be a pokemon in a main series game before. We have had the main villain take control of the cover Pokémon, but the cover Pokémon was never the actual villain before.

I think the reason for all those downsides is because Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon was developed by the younger team of Game Freak as Kazumasa Iwao directed USUM and not Shigeru Ohmori or Junichi Masuda while the more veteran team like Shigeru Ohmori and Junichi Masuda were developing Pokemon for the Switch.
In a way, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon was something to fill in while GameFreak was working on the next big game on the Switch.

USUM is the most divisive and hated entry in the Pokemon main series, next to Gen 6. But holy Alolan Muk! I did not expect to have the tally count for USUM to be *1 point apart* from being tied!
I think Gen 6 would have been more successful if it got a Pokémon Gray or a X/Y 2 to serve as a sequel and expand the story and region of Kalos (as the games definitely could have had a bit more tightening in game play and more content).

Lets face the facts that those days of a single sister game are gone.
I will say, I completely disagree when it comes to Lusamine. I thought Lusamine was not only the worst thing about Sun and Moon by a long way but that her portrayal in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon was WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better. First off, my problem with Lusamine in Sun and Moon... she has absolutely no agency and is responsible for none of her actions. Because of this, any personality traits she exhibited are voided by the fact "a Nihilego made her do it". That is one of my biggest villain peeves, when they try to make a villain sympathetic by taking away their agency and making them blameless. As such, she doesn't actually develop because she just immediately reverts back to her normal personality after Lillie helps to save her. I mean they hint towards her having issues beforehand but that description falls completely in line with her Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon portrayal and is still completely different to how she acts when she's possessed. Speaking of, onto why Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon did this better...
Because of the shift of focus to Necrozma, Lusamine is able to take an anti-hero role. This works perfectly with her actual personality, that of a selfish mother obsessed with achieving glory at any cost and who expects her children to merely fall in line. Her goals are noble, her methods are still well... less than rosy. But the best part? She's actually responsible for what she's doing! She's not just some poor damsel, she's doing bad things for reasonable reasons because she came to those decisions all by herself and not because some space parasite is making her do it. Now them not showing the conversation between Lillie and Lusamine is a little annoying... but still understandable because we kinda had a big space dragon to deal with and we only had one ride available so I guess it explains what Lillie and co were doing rather than just twiddling their thumbs. And Lillie got even more development in the postgame than in the original so it doesn't bother me much.
TL;DR Anti-hero Lusamine > "Villain" Lusamine... and Ghetsis still best villain (I LOVED his portrayal in the Rainbow Rocket story! :D)

Now the question is which version will GF remember? the anime already used a middle point version of both, and the Adventures manga is using the og Lusamine.
OG!Lusamine is more memorable by default; USUM!Lusamine is shadow of her former self that makes Game!Lysandre look like the greatest character in the history of Pokemon (hint: he's NOT; both PokeSpecial/Adventures AND the anime did much better with him!)
As for Anime!Lusamine... I don't mind her, honestly; she's eccentric and overbearing, but it works with the lighter tone and her different relationships with her two children are, while not super-compelling at least somewhat fun to watch. Her characterisation there after all, doesn't have ANY bearing on the anime writers being SO STUPID, they did NOT make Lillie's "Z-Powered Form" her permanent outfit from then on like in the games (because it's WAY superior and has more character, objectively, PERIOD!), so the fact they actually still adapted the "Motherbeast" arc is good enough for me... As Logan points out, USUM doesn't mesh with keeping Gladion and Lillie the same, but at least the anime actually made an EFFORT to not make the story a mess! That's without even getting into the URS barely having any real significance...
Imagine for a moment, if we DID get a sequel: a story with a new trainer starting out with their own rival(s) and maybe some new Trial Captains (and Mina having her trial ready); if it's not just right on the heels of SM but a couple years later, bring a slightly-older Lillie back from Kanto as a trainer, with Lusamine in a new state and Gladion still running Aether Foundation; then the URS come with warnings about Necrozma, and Gladion (still with baggage on his mother) takes USUM!Lusamine's role in trying to do the wrong thing for the right reasons and through it, comes to forgive his mother by understanding her... You can definitely have Team Rainbow Rocket easily, so no worries there! Also of course, bring in Mohn with an actual character ARC instead of a lazy patch-job (just like USUM!Lillie resolving things with Mummy off-SCREEN... seriously, at least her taking her mother to find help and become a trainer in Kanto was character PROGRESSION).

I think one of the details I like the most in the Ultra games, other than the obvious added sidequests, is the more subtle changes done to mess with your expectations. The best example is the water trial. If you've played S/M, you expect Lana to be a pathological liar and that you will fight the totem Wishiwashi without her telling you about it. But she acts very nonchalant and direct in her statements of the Wishiwashi being the boss. It feels uncanny and off, but you don't question it Seeing that Araquanid come up instead is absolutely spectacular. Lana's character as a massive troll is preserved, the twist is great, and non of it would work if you hadn't played S/M before.

I definitely would've preferred a sequel, but I did enjoy most of the things these games brought about. The unfortunate degradation of Lusamine ,and subsequently her kids, sucks big time, but Necrozma made a huge glow up (pun fully intended). I also found it was pretty dark in some areas, need I mention the haunted trainer school or Ultra Ruin being a wrecked AU Hau'Oli. And while final boss Hau was cool, Kukui was way better. Here's hoping Pokemon Switch is able to make up for those shortcomings
I hate to be that guy, but you missed a negative. The National dex is still MIA. It doesn't matter if you give it a face and sort of personality if it doesn't do it's intended purpose like it's supposed to. I initially thought that they had held off on it so they could introduce new Pokémon mid-gen and have their official dex order make sense, but nope. Still missing over half their creations and can't be bothered to so much as reuse old descriptions. All in all the games were still good. I mean, come on it's Pokémon, but they just weren't necessary and most of it felt like I paid $40 to replay what I already owned.
Agreed. Why bother collecting Pokemon outside of the regional dex when they aren't recorded?
i figured that the issue was that there were just way too many pokemon already so it would just take too much space. making the pokedex smaller also makes the challenge of completely filling it a little bit easier when otherwise the difficulty would just keep increasing and incresing with every new game released. now the challenge is a bit more on the same level as some of the earlier games. also now you can fill the pokedex mostly by yourself without just getting most of them from trades because the dex is small enough to fit all it's pokemon into the same region.
well there things i'd change I really liked roto boost there optional but I mainly use em post game also they now released the starters hidden abilities...so yeah and the tuturial and ending weren't three hours long
A lot of the messed parts you had barely affected my overall experience with Ultra Moon. While not everything was perfect, Ultra Moon took everything I loved about the original Moon and multiplied it to levels I didn't think were imaginable while simultaneously adding in many new things to make it its own thing. For the final hurrah for Pokemon on 3DS and probably Pokemon on handheld in general, it was a dang good one in my opinion. Also, I actually really liked the photo booth, especially when a team member evolved, and thought what they did with the Rotom Dex was fine.

What was so special about Lusamine? To me she seemed generic in the original game, and the "redemption" at the end seemed forced. Idk maybe I'm just used to deeper character development, I didn't mind this change.
In Sun and Moon she was bat shit crazy due to a lot of things! Mohn disappearing and Nihilego venom being the two things into that mess.
USUM has her with the Mohn trauma but none of the Nihilego venom messing with her, still crazy and abusive but USUM made her much more human and told us the players what did sent her off the deep end.
Fact that USUM gave us closure that S/M never did is another thing I prefer over the original, only trade off is that Lillie's plot is NOT the center focus of USUM which is what makes the every joe over look it as a "Butchering" of her story. (Less focus does make her weaker in the main... but the things happening at post game make up for it!)
I can’t believe you didn’t mention the best new thing that USUM added: MANTINE SURF! Not only is it a surprisingly fun minigame, it’s also an easy way to get BP for those sweet, sweet move tutors.
Eh, I don't really see how anyone can say Lusamine is made particularly noble or good. She's still pretty self-centered, can still be rather nasty to her kids and overall still has, uh, issues (the fact that she's still freezing Pokémon alive should make that pretty clear), she's just made morally gray as opposed to crossing over into complete sociopathic territory. She's still a villain, but more of an "ends justify the means" villain rather than a complete monster. Both Lusamines are interesting for different reasons.
That said, while I have no problem with the changes in Lusamine's character, the fact that Gladion and Lillie's arcs are weakened because of the change is something I can't help but be forced to agree with, partly because their arc doesn't really fit in with the slightly different direction their mother went with.
ShutUpAdachi In USUM, she appears more as narcissistic and naive. This leads to her going into Ultra Megolopolis and pissing off the eldritch prism dragon god.
In vanilla SM, her mind was already deteriorating as she was doping on space jellyfish neurotoxins for years. At that point, her love is a instinctive defensive mechanism for the Nihilego. That too is pretty eldritch in concept.
...I prefer the latter.

I was surprised to find this video in my recommendations, and to see an ancient friend making ultra high quality content on a high-scale now. Congrats on that. As for this video, I do agree with most of the points on both sides, especially when it comes to stuff like the first 20 hours/pre-poni stuff being an awful drag and the move tutors being a handy help. Still though, the lack of the national dex/not including legends and island scan mons in it is the biggest flaw against this game for me and I was surprised to not even see the lack of a national dex acknowledged.

Why does Game Freak insist on ditching the main concept of gen 6 in general (being Mega Evolution, of course) to make an entirely new one? It would’ve been easy to just incorporate Megas into the story, but they seem to want to rid everything of gen 6. Even Zygarde. Poor thing.

I actually really liked US/UM Lusamine. An ambiguously evil prospective defender who is willing to go to extreme lengths to protect Alola is much more interesting than..._she's craaaazy!_ And Lillie and Gladion being opposed to her due to discomfort with her methods/fear for her safety adds a nice layer of complexity to their relationships. Not to mention that Mohn's disappearance is actually touched upon and explored a bit as opposed to it being missable background details.
Also, I don't quite understand why Roto Loto is such an issue when you could easily just not use it. It and the Exp Share only make the game easier if you let them.
Paraster the thing is that Lillie story was tied to that craizy mother she had in the original S&M and, since that is gone in USUM, Lillie's quest (and Gladion as well) feel pointless. And that's without counting other issues with the story...
Edit: A big plot hole like this: the Ultra Recon Squad actually had a Solgaleo or Lunala (depending of the verison) that you use to go where Necrozma is after it captures Nebby so... Why Nebby had to transform in the legendary Pokemon in the first place? (In fact, if Nebby didn't transform, it would not have been absorbed by Necrozma). The Ultra Recon Squad technically wants to stop Necrozma, right? So... Why they didn't mention they already had a Pokemon able to go to Ultra Splace? Unless they captured just before Nebby transforms (something they don't mention).
@@jowysw Late answer but they didn't offer their legendary because they mistrusted Lusamine, which they were proven correct later on. The squad wanted to just stop Necrozma, Lusamine wanted to destroy it.

You know, I’m a diehard Pokémon fan, and this is the only pokemon game so far that I DON’T want to play. Sun and Moon were fine, but they were just... uninteresting to me. I saw USUM, and immediately realized I probably wouldn’t like it. Despite that, I kept my hopes up that it would be good, but further trailers only made certain this belief. I get that the this game was sort of like BW2 in that it was made to keep fans happy while a game on a newer system was being made, but those games were awesome. Anyway, here’s hoping that Pokemon Switch can resolve the fans’ issues with the games.

Very complete overview, there. The only things I would've liked to see touched upon as well are the blatant difficulty increase, and the modifications brought to most important Trainers' teams.
In my opinion, the former is +2 Good (actually challenging fights were a welcome addition, but stuff like Ultra Necrozma and Totem Ribombee VERY nearly crossed the "actual bullshit" line), and the latter is +1 Good. (apart from a few questionable choices like Lusamine trading her Mismagius for a Lopunny, a lot of these changes were for the better. I am SO glad they finally gave Guzma a Vikavolt, and Gladion having a Zoroark is nothing short of a perfect fit)
I’ve heard that GameFreak is under a lot of stress to get Pokémon for the Switch out by 2018, which is honestly concerning. They’re basically trying to get a new game out every year which isn’t the most comfortable feeling.
I certainly hope not. Because a main Pokemon game on the Switch has way too much potential to be wasted on only one year of developement.

Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon to me were just an alternate timeline to the original gen 7 stuff. I never played the OG Sun/Moon, so this may be why I like it so much. Also, can we point out Ultra Necrozma and its godly themes? I know it was mentioned but still. It needs more credit for fighting something more powerful than a Pokemon GOD.

I feel that the OG Sun and Moon were what Alola was truly meant to be, US/UM were all of the things they couldn’t have the time to add on the gameplay front. So Alola is basically fragmented into two.
Or maybe I’m just saying that since the original Sun and Moon are my favorite Pokémon games, period.
...I just wish they kept the Lusamine story intact. That was amazing. Heck, Nihilego is my third-favorite Pokémon of all time!
I was fine with how the game was going until I got to Acerola's trial. From that point to Po Town and then the Aether Paradise, it was exactly the same as the originals, and felt like a slog to get through.
i actually quite enjoy the photo club, it's a very cute addition that can really bring out the creativity and personality of you and others. however there are a LOT of things that work against it
such as the angles you can take pictures are severely lacking, the inability to place your trainer character in various different area's, the VERY small area you can place your pokemon and still have them pose, not being able to pause the pokemon's poses, turning causes the box placement to enlarge and thus more restriction, not being able to use multiple pokemon in a photo so group shots ae impossible...
there are many more things i can say about this feature that i wish they had tweaked more, but over all i personally love the photo club
with all the restrictions placed upon you, you really have to get creative, which i enjoy. the pokemon not pausing their animations makes it feel like trying to get that perfect picture of your pet dog, and that can take hundreds of tries, so it's realistic. the locales they use are all gorgeous and thus make for some amazing scenes, all the poses the pokemon can pull off can also make for some great scenes.
so many good things, so many lack luster things

The thing I loved most about Kukui being the Champion of the Elite Four was that HE was ME.
He was a guy who got into Pokemon at a young age, just as I first started playing Pokemon Yellow at the age of 11.
He grew up with Pokemon just as I did.
He kept the love of Pokemon just like I did.
And he helped the next generation learn to love Pokemon just like I'm doing with my own nephew.
It felt like, in a way, I was the final boss of Sun and Moon.

Not gonna Lie that gameplay WAS improved over S/M in USUM, but I can't deny when it pulls the "One step forward, two steps back" approach to Story. WHY did Lillie's Character Arc get Bastardized as much as it did? That Touching scene between her and the Player Character on Exeggutor Island? Non-existent! Confronting her MOM after she goes Batshit insane? Also gone! The ANIME portrays Lusamine better than USUM's story does! Gladion's whole purpose for stealing Type:Null and joining Team Skull to Rebel against Lusamine? Pointless! All for WHAT?! A New Trial, some Different Totems, and a few Extra Scenes involving Hau and our Starter?! To quote AGVN: WHAT THE FUCK WERE THEY FUCKING THINKING?!

eh....I feel the story was a improvement overall hoenstly...sucks that the island scene is gone but we still know enough about her and how she chanes.... her mom isn't as crazy in this game...that's the thing about lusamien...so while the talkwas off screen mainly...we still see some of them interacting and well...how they get along and we see lusamine try to become a better person in like post game. how does the anime portray lusamine better? gladion still stole type null to get stronger and get away from lusamine....not really pointless but also to protect his family by becoming stronger (like lillie) and maybe lusmaien if she came to her senses. the new trial was cool....different totems and scenes were nice to...some other stuff aswell

This is probably what I'd reference as a good place to get an idea of my feelings towards USUM, honestly I can't say I disagree with really anything in the video since, well yeah, downgrades on the story in favor of the new content to a game(s) that already was great on its own kinda feels... no. I mean dont get me wrong, I like Poipole, its evolution, the whole thing w/ rainbow rocket, the new boost of growth for Hau, and especially Dusk Form Lycanroc (despite it being just a recolor with differing stats to the other forms) but even so. Similar opinions, thanks for a good video, and I can't wait to see what comes up

Dont want to be that guy, but I found the lusamine arc to be somewhat interesting. Not as interesting as the originals, but interesting nonetheless. The arc wasn’t about lusamine is trying to save everyone because she is selfless, she is trying to save everyone because of her massive ego. She only does this for recognition and show, and thats why she goes to such extremes to do it.

Honestly, my main problem with USUM was that they weren`t really different enough to warrant playing. I really wished they went all-out with changing _all_ of the details to really make it seem like an "alternate" story. For one, they could have altered the entire Alolan Dex to lack all of the non-Gen 7 and non-Alolan Form Mons and then thrown in everything else that wasn`t there to quite literally make the roster of catchable Mons as different as reasonably possible, but instead they simply added more things to catch. Because of this, there is basically no reason to play SM if you already have USUM-there were enough upgrades but not as many changes to set it apart as an "alternate" game like it was promised to be. The concept could have worked-they just needed to change more just for the sake of making it different.
Blessed: difficulty increase and Mantine Surf
After Gen 6, Most complain about the newer games being too easy, and the first set of gen 7 are no different. As for the revisit, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are a bit more challenging than Sun and Moon. It’s a slight difficulty increase, but an increase nonetheless.
As for Mantine Surf, it’s a fun mini game and a fun way to travel between the islands of Alola.
Messed: lack of more Regional variants.
Wished we got more regional variants in USUM, that was my only one con for the games.
Yeah your advice at the end makes perfect sense. I never played Sun or Moon but got Ultra Sun and absolutely love it. One should really choose Sun/Moon OR Ultra Sun/Moon and not get both unless they're a super fan.

Honestly, the one interesting thing I find about this game is that the main antagonist is a pokemon. We have never had the main antagonist be a pokemon in a main series game before. We have had the main villain take control of the cover Pokémon, but the cover Pokémon was never the actual villain before.
