I have a 16 year old cheap Titan watch, it still works if battery is replaced. My premium Japanese watch had to get machine replaced within warranty period.
    Titan just works.
And the salesman strategy is still relevant today, The experience of purchasing a watch from the Titan store is still amazing.

Recently they changed their Business model for Titan EyePlus, started focusing more on Taneira’s expansion and expanding rapidly into Smart wear segment. But Tanishq is the current backbone with 300+ stores across India and fast expanding to Middle East and Americas.

    1. Titans' share price rise today can't be attributed to the watches, even though the initial impetus to the brand was given by its watch division, the key business lesson to learn from Titan is also how they ventured into different realms in the luxury market- by creating brands like tanishq (also to be noted more than 60% revenue comes from here), eyewear, Taneira (Sarees), skinn (perfumes) etc and protected the brand using diversification.
    2. Not a much-known fact- they even have a business unit called TEAL- which is to manufacture precision instruments and machinery.
    3. As you mentioned, Tanishq is a super interesting case study- how Titan penetrated into the market by garnering the trust of Indian women is an amazing case study (by assuring no compromise on the purity of their valuable possession).
Titans' success has increased my admiration for Mr Desai - a true legend he was.
I also think Titan was not able to catch up with the changing market conditions in the watch space.

@@fuji3164 your statement is partly true, according to me. When apple is put into comparison with any individual smart watch manufactures such as Samsung, Fitbit or oppo, Apple is definitely the king. But when market share of watchOS and wearOS (maybe after two years from now) would be taken into consideration Google's WearOS would definitely take the win, much like the same way it did with Android.
Google is investing hugely in the development of WearOS and has started giving licence for WearOS to manufacturers like Samsung and Oppo. And maybe, if Samsung follows its strategy of catering every market from budget to premium, it can surpass Apple in the number of units sold.

Love your accurate graphic illustration of mechanical and quartz watch movements. I do remember ugly HMT & Allwyn watches and how my grandfather tried to fool me into ditching my Alba and Casio watches for those monstrosities. I was too smart and would have none of his nonsense. Indians were cut-off from the world thanks to idiotic oligarchic market set ups by corrupt Congress/Indira Gandhi Governments in the guise of socialism, not stupid. Why is it a surprise that Indians were aware of good quality stuff other countries’ citizens had? HMTs had Citizen movements and Allwyn had Seiko- low grade stuff, but still Japanese made. Titan is an Indian case study in brilliant branding, dealer networking and marketing - like Fossil in the USA or Swiss Military in Europe. Both Titan and Fossil outsource/make rather average quality watch movements but position these crappy movements in exquisite jewellery grade cases to be sold as premium, designer or even diamond/gold jewellery or accessories. Similar to overpriced shit watches sold by Ferrari, Armani, Tommy Hilfiger, Versace or Guess. Ironically, those old ugly Allwyns & HMTs had higher grade Japanese made movements than you would find in ‘premium’ Tanishqs/Titans, Tommy Hilfigers or Armanis. Great video, and appreciate the insight into Tata’s brilliant strategy for Titan.

The key lesson is to innovate. Producing in a sellers way will not succeed and HMT once well known lost ground.
Now Titan need to innovate as smart watch companies can take over.
The case study was interesting as how India was towards industrialization. Now with globalization, Indian MNCs can take pride in their indianness.
Care should be taken that foreign brands have the edge on technology.
Titan with diverse sector placements can leverage on customer base. Still, the world has moved on and AI has brought drastic changes in the world we live.
Indian brands has to go global. That is the key.
