Awesome review , i had a 2015 S1000R and put 20 000 kilometers on it. Had full Akrapovic decat exhaust on it and Dimsport management system. Very nice and fast. Then i swopped it for a 2014 KTM 1290 Superduke R also with full decat Akrapovic shorty exhaust. Awesome bike as well. To me its like i had a supercar and now having a muscle car. Different animals same fun.
I found a 14 1290r with 5k miles on it and it’s $2000 USD less than a comparable S1000R. I think I’m gonna buy it. One owner, well maintained, only slight scratches from a driveway tip over that can be fixed.
After a test ride of both I am sure people will find it very hard not to choose the KTM...the riding experience is summarised very nicely by Nasty Nils "If you just have one more day to live and want to make the most incredible ride in your life, you have to choose the Superduke". Seriously ride the KTM before you decide on the BMW, you will be kicking yourself if you ride it after.
I liked the part when he says: "you can go fast in the BMW without shitting your pants". That would make a great campaign: Duke 1290, get your pants soiled.
great works guys!!! the last bit about having one day to live, and kicking it with the superduke. pure win for ktm lol. i'd love a superduke, but i would also like to live to see retirement.
Really good review. All the important points were covered plus some great on board riding footage. And the final conclusion as to which to buy and why was spoken like a true biker. Thanks
Why would anyone vote thumbs down on this video??? Great work guys! It looks and sounds like you took your time to post an honest review with some great camera angles and action shots. Also, thanks for posting an English version (mi español no es bueno).
What a great review! That summary at the end was simply perfect. Since either of these bikes could be classified as dream bikes, I would have to go with the Super Duke. A dream bike for me would have to be an event to ride. While the BMW sounds like a very good machine, I would want to be able to shit my pants if I wanted to =D (though I am sure I could with the BMW too)
***** don't worry about it. Great job thank you.now only wishing I had a ktm.but l probably will need to invest in band aids with that one. But that's the least of my worries. they're all sold out in the states anyway
And despite his accent, his english is still far better than the aboslutely attrocious subtitles. Good grief those are laughably bad on this vid! "is a drag you can sit on their bill the Gazu Indu make incredible" what the heck is that?!
Was choosing between these two and did a thorough test ride of both before deciding. I have a BMW K1300S already and a BMW M3 so I love BMW! Did S1000R is a great bike with more features than the KTM and it feels slightly more modern in its layout. It pulls strong, once you get the revs up. Handling is confidence inspiring. As said, the logic choice. I liked it, but I didn’t love it. But... The KTM! OMG! 😍 The engine! The Power! The handling is much quicker, some might say nervous. If you ridden SuperMoto before this is like a big SM bike. Awesome! The gearbox, clutch and brakes are better with the KTM and for me it was also a more comfortable riding position. You also ride two people on the KTM more comfort than on the BMW. You’re missing some gadget like the quick shifter (if you’re not getting the 17 or later model) and the ESA suspension. But in my book that’s an easy trade off. Pure love! ❤️
KTM for me, for me a bike is a heart choice not a wallet choice. Every day I ride I feel alive, and I have never found myself thinking about cost while carving corners, dragging knee or running for the redline. I want to whoop in my lid, as I twist the throttle to the stop! There's a difference, if you can't afford the Duke and want to get close then ya the BMW makes it the best choice, but if you simply are looking for a sledgehammer a rubber mallet just wont do!
Ya the Tiller is a machine that sounds like a muscle car! Goes like stink and most important to me speaks to your riding soul. It's more like a horse than a lifeless piece of equipment. Most squids won't understand that statement but it's not meant for them. I would rather have a bike that I can push to the limit and know what it's going to do than to have a bike that maybe the fastest thing on 2 wheels but completely unrideable. Now I must say this, part of the fun is taming a wild stallion for me but I want something that speaks to me rather than just a tool. I had 2 Busas and loved them and would buy them again in a heart beat, the ZX14 too. However the 1000RR while extremely capable just seems to ride itself to me. Maybe I need to ride a tricked out one to get my blood boiling?
Texarmageddon Absolutely the old VFR800 sounds like a muscle car. I own a BMW K1300S and have for 3 years, just purchased a KTM to sit along side it. I can not be happier, except I only have 70 miles on it so far.
Hi! I own a KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE GT, and I suppose that the engine of my bike is very similar to the "R" model. At 4:18 you say that the first gear is very short.....My bike has a problem with the first gear: when you accelarate, most of the times the engine has a kind of stop.., it cannot go anymore, and you must switch right away to the second gear. In this sense the first gear is absolutely too short! This problem is caused by the clutchless upshifting and downshifting and the KTM technicians are trying to understand why this happens. Now I disabled that option and the problem disappeared... the first gear is normal, non short at all. Thank you for this vid very accurate ...
I think the Tuono v4r will have something to say about this... and it's still my favourite of these three. The v4 is just a beautiful motor in a great chassis.
we tried the touno too. but the engine is to sporty for us. it needs so much revs and concentration. if you are are a sportsbike guy - ok. but for a nakedbike rider on a long trip to nervous.
Let me see if I understand... you take two super-naked bikes, one of which has a claimed 180hp... and say that the Tuono is too fast and requires too much concentration, so can't be compared? .... .... .... surprising, to be sure.*****
Steve C What 1000ps is trying to say is that under 7000rpm the Tuono V4R doesn't have the torque to match the KTM and the BMW, meaning it has to be kept higher in it's rev range and so on a long tour of the country side it can be a bit much to keep on the boil regularly. The Tuono is much more a naked RSV4 than a Super-Naked, which means although it can carve canyons easily enough it might not be as comfortable to do it over a weekend with lots of stops and even a pillion. Not to say it isn't a great bike, it just doesn't meet the same criteria.
***** And that comment would probably make up the mind of someone looking for a naked superbike :) With all that talk about performance of BMW and brutal power of KTM it’s sounds silly to hear that Tuono is too sporty. It’s a good comparison but it doesn’t mean much without the sportiest super naked to date. ;) I have a feeling that the Tuono will still kick their bums.
khamid1 I think you haven't ridden one. Under 7K the Tuono is plenty strong... Over 7,000 rpm, it's a superbike with a big fat midrange around 10,000 RPM. I have never heard any review EVER say that the Tuono was under-powered... perhaps it doesn't have the low end torque of the KTM (no doubt) but that's why it revs to 14,000 rpm. The Tuono made 7whp more than the KTM in a recent test and its thrust curves (that's final torque at the wheel) were similar but broader. It's also overgeared from the factory... The KTM would have torque everywhere in the range, though. That much is true. But for same money as the KTM, you could get KWS to give you a head and exhaust setup with around 180whp for the Tuono... no guarantees you could ride it with that much power, though. lol I have also noted that both these bikes come from Germany and 1000PS is from ... Germany. ;)
This is a comment 10 years after this video , I have a 2023 Duke 890R bur just bought a month ago a 2015 Superduke 1290R The Beast , well first of all I can tell you it's a very civilised beast and I was expecting something wat was almost to much but it is'nt . It is very smooth if you can control your throttle and with T.C. on it's a very easy ride and even with T.C. off and in sport mode (that's the most aggressive mode you can put it on) it's still not really a beast but a very powerful and lovely bike to ride , my Duke 890R in track mode with AWM off and slip to 1 is much more aggressive but if you look at your speedo the 1290 is much faster , it just doesn't feel that way . But that's the great thing about the 1290R it's really smooth , only that you alway's have to put the T.C. off again after you shut the engine down is ....
Good review. These are two of the bikes I am considering right now. Maybe you could follow with a comparison involving the Ducati Monster 1200. In terms of value, I am leaning heavily toward the BMW from this comparo. The loaded package price for the S 1000 R is less than the base MSRP for the Super Duke R here in the USA. Something I did not hear discussed was the ergonomic comparison. I know the seats are reportedly comfortable, but what about the geometry for legroom and long distance comfort? Picky, I know, but it may push me one way or the other. Thanks for your excellent work.
Rainer Diabl But this S 1000 R model is based at $13,150. The premium package is $14,950 and includes: Integral Race ABS (disengageable), ASC - Automatic Stability Control (disengageable), 2 Ride Modes (rain, road), anti-hopping clutch, LED rear light, drop sensor, 46 mm upside down telescopic fork, compression and rebound damping adjustable, adjustable rear rebound damping, gear shift assistant, dynamic traction control, cruise control, dynamic damping control, heated grips and engine spoiler. The SDR is a premium package as it is with a base price of $16,999, but no standard gear shift assist, heated grips or cruise control, for example. Granted that there is a displacement and twin to in-line 4 engine design difference. It's hard to argue with the actual value.
As I didn't see the actual prices of the S1000R on the BMW Motorrad website yet, I can't discuss the prices (and upgrades) of the S1000R with you. ;) But it's good to see BMW stomping down the prices to get the bike to sell against KTM and Ducati. For a premium bike it's basically in a Japanese bike price class which is very suprising to me. About comfort with the SDR I can tell you that it is very comfortable, great economic, great long range capabilities. I just wouldn't go on the highway too much with it, at least not here in Europe. I rode it from Munich to Salzburg on the Autobahn and with speeds above 160 km/h it gets uncomfortable. But I never seen a naked bike that is so comfortable at speeds up to 140 km/h. And I do also wonder what the Duc Monster will cost. In the US I think it will be around 18-20k USD.
I ve test ridden both engines (not bikes, neither would fit me @6'9") and the KTM is my cup of tea mostly due to its monstrous torque. The S1000XR that I test rode needed to be ridden ALWAYS over 6k rpms to make things happen, below this range it was dull and anaemic. Not so for the KTM.
Don´t worry about "terrible English", as somebody said. I appreciate this "German" English, I underestand every word! For me it is better then native-born English, than I underestand ca 70%. Perfect review! And what about desing of bikes? Subjective question, but for me the winner is KTM. Design, V twin, sound, torque... And money? If you are rich to buy S1000R, it is not problem to buy Super Duke.
Hey bro, i plan to buy 1 of this bikes, and still confusing me. I just need comfortable bike and fuel efficient for daily drive. Many people say ktm is more comfortable for tall people, how about short people like 170 cm, Is it still comfortable to ride.
Is reliability with motorcycles even something to consider at this day in age? What do you guys think? I've heard that BMW's are the most reliable et cetera, ducatis not so much, but does it really matter? Aren't all bikes pretty reliable?
I would say most bikes are reliable these days. But you get what you put into your bike much more than a car. What I mean by that is if you neglect your bike on maintenance, it's going to show much more than if you neglected your car. While still reliable, the valve trains on motorcycle engines are very delicate and you need to keep your oil fresh and your valve tolerances within spec. If you're not willing to stay on top of or pay to have your bike serviced regularly then don't get one. They fall apart rapidly with neglect. Older Ducati's used to be notorious for being unreliable. But they have turned around and the owners of modern Ducati's I know have no more issues with their bikes than anyone else.
Really enjoyed your review... Thank you very much. Your English is fantastic, particularly your use of analogy. Loved the bit about not shitting your pants... hilarious! Back to the bikes... I still think I'd prefer a fairing on something this powerful.
If you want to hang around 78-82 ft-lb torque all your life with liter bikes, take the unreliable Beemer. If you want to uproot trees and pull down houses with torque, go to KTM.
I was really looking forward to hearing how the comfort was compared between these two bikes. This is a big deal for me in deciding which bike to buy. Can you please comment with your opinion? Thanks for your review!
***** I was actually calculating and in Netherlands with both package included with alarm and couple of other parts price is close to standard price of SDR. So if you add all this extra on SDR it is way off...
Duke is awesome but I am sure most of us will be much faster on the BMW. The power of these bikes are extreme even for expert riders and unnecessarily dangerous. Bmw simply makes it easier to handle it for us mere mortals. Had a K1200s not long ago and I'd find myself looking at the speedo and seeing 160-170 way too often so I sold it. It made reaching high speeds way too quick and easy because it was so stable yet I was still able to ride it like a hooligan as if it was a much lighter bike so I couldn't even imagine how it would be with 100 lbs less and more horsepower. I should also mention the BMW reliability, dealer network and great service with longer warranties, important to most of us with financial responsibilities.
Jens Yngvesson Det är en dålig jämförelse tycker jag. hade ena hojen varit hälften så dyr men presterat hälften så bra, så hade det i så fall varit lika stor skillnad i PPK men i praktiken så skulle den hojen vara värdelös.
it is definitely worth mentioning in the review. yes the customer has to weigh up the options for themselves, but a test ride from a dealer won't be anywhere near as long as the media get with the bikes. a sense of "this bike is almost as good for much cheaper" is worth knowing. as is the suggestion that if it is your last day then the KTM is the bike.
Even in the company of the 1077 Tuono, I'd still take the KTM. Because effortless torque for days. motorcycle.com.vsassets.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/2016-aprilia-tuono-v4-1100-factory-vs-ktm-1290-super-duke-r-hp-torque-dyno-547x389.jpg
KTM 1290 superduke R Thinking on order one??? think twice... i ordered mine de 16 dec 2013. estill waiting. KTM dealer treat me an anoying person . The dealer informed me that better to wait because first production units were already being calling for correcting production mistakes. The bikes is 10 days in the ktm oficial dealer and they do not know how to set it up.....it seems the electronic unit . When i saw the bike the throtle did not return to its position. I do not know if the ride by wire will be a good idea... imagine 180 cv , 144 nm torque, and the throtle just does not goes off when you release it.... it is being a real nightmare buying experience
You guys are doing a fantastic job.
Are you still getting the superduke? I hope so (:
+1 great job, I've subbed and really appreciate your efforts, top work guys!
thank you!
RoyalJordanian Thats why you got both bikes.
Finaly comparison...S1000R all the way ;)
Great video!!!
On the BMW "you can go very fast without shitting your pants" hahahaha @07:12
KTM makes you shit your pants! KTM duke powa!
7:10 "Can go Svery fasst wizzout Zshitting your pantz" Lol.
you sir made my day!! 😂
I just purchased the S1000R, but still love the KTM, both amazing bikes.
Muchas gracias por los subtítulos en español!! Ahora mismo me pondré a compartir este video.
Just adding my appreciation for your informative and entertaining reviews....a big thank you from your fans in Australia :)
Great video! Cant wait for my s1000r to be delivered.. about 4 weeks left and the weather is getting better and better! :D

Thank you for providing this in English as well. Great job and a great comparison. Thanks again
Great video, flawless audio quality. Thanks for English :)
Great review! "...can go very fast without shitting your pants.", nicely put.
I liked the part when he says: "you can go fast in the BMW without shitting your pants".

Nasty Nils rocks! Great vid. Come on Neevesy and MCN, this is the standard and you are way off!!
:-)
Best review I have seen to date. I bought the BMW due to this review.Your English is perfect
great works guys!!!
the last bit about having one day to live, and kicking it with the superduke. pure win for ktm lol.
i'd love a superduke, but i would also like to live to see retirement.
Been waiting for this. Thx. If only I had the money for a SDR, the S1000R and a tuono v4.... but it will have to be one of those 3.
Really good review. All the important points were covered plus some great on board riding footage. And the final conclusion as to which to buy and why was spoken like a true biker. Thanks
hey guys,
Finally more on S1000r in English!!
thnks!!
enjoyed watching it.
gr8 Job!!!
Great video !!! I need that Ktm in my life haha
Nice comparison. Thank you for speaking English in the video. :)

+1000PS Motorcycle Channel Don't improve your English. It is fine as it is because you don't have all the PC bullshit we do in english. :)
Just curious: What's "PC bullshit" ?
Politically correct. You say what you mean and if that means a little bad language here and there thats fine..:)
Good review. More informative than most. Thank you!
Excellent review! Can't think how you could have done it better. Keep it up!
Great review, very informative. Thanks for the Gerlish commentary, I probably would have understood only half if it was in German
Brilliant video! S1000r all the way!
very informative and nicely done review. Thank you!
thank you

Burgavo11 You've totally misread the point of my post.
Was choosing between these two and did a thorough test ride of both before deciding.

Nice video, I love the way how you are doing a serious technical interview and then just slip the words "shitting my pants" in without pausing.
Are you somehow related to arnold schwarzenegger?
Fantastic review. Thanks!
Makes sense. Nice review. Seems like a perfect bike a bit more usable and 2k cheaper then an s1000rr. Nice
awesome review of two great bikes cheers

Wow Finally i got my choice, thank you for good video sharing
Very good review. I like the V twin or V two. It has the spirit.
Awesome, Both beautiful bikes.. but I Can't wait.. 2 months until my s 1000 r arrives Oh ya!
My coming mid April :) going mental with all this waiting...
Same here... Go away snow.
I love my S1R! 🤩
Great review..
thank you
great video
Very good but where's the V4 Tuono. I would like to know how that compares to the BM.
Nice review thks.BMW it is then
Thank you for making it in English. I wish the French would only be so nice. And YES BMW would be my choice fer sure!

That's quite normal. In the end the fully equipped BMW models are always expensive as hell (especially on the 1200GS or the S1000RR.
Rainer Diabl The up-spec Monster 1200 S base price is $15,995 here in the US, believe it or not. By the way....thank you for the SDR comfort feedback.
im 6ft the bmw is pretty comfy but to each his own comin off a 2010 r1
I ve test ridden both engines (not bikes, neither would fit me @6'9") and the KTM is my cup of tea mostly due to its monstrous torque. The S1000XR that I test rode needed to be ridden ALWAYS over 6k rpms to make things happen, below this range it was dull and anaemic. Not so for the KTM.
C_R_O_M__________ So you didnt like neither of them?
Question: What if you find a local dealer offering the KTM SuperDuke 1290R at the price of 12.500...?
+Darude Sandstorm buy it
12500 what? pounds, euros, dollars, yenes
I love KTM
mother of god, I would take both :D
hey bro you riding on the wrong side of the road!!! haha and so are all the cars coming the other way!!! everyone has gone crazy!
KTM is always value for money
But they have turned around and the owners of modern Ducati's I know have no more issues with their bikes than anyone else.
esta prueba creo que esta grabada en el rio de agua sorbas, almeria ,españa.
He mentions We2 engine. mine came with V-twin though.
Really enjoyed your review... Thank you very much. Your English is fantastic, particularly your use of analogy. Loved the bit about not shitting your pants... hilarious! Back to the bikes... I still think I'd prefer a fairing on something this powerful.
hii bro who wins
If you want to hang around 78-82 ft-lb torque all your life with liter bikes, take the unreliable Beemer. If you want to uproot trees and pull down houses with torque, go to KTM.
BEST
saving up for a 1290, however I'm only 20 and at uni. guess its more beans on toast for me :)
I was really looking forward to hearing how the comfort was compared between these two bikes. This is a big deal for me in deciding which bike to buy. Can you please comment with your opinion?
Thanks for your review!
+1000PS Motorcycle Channel what about short ride 5'5"
Can some one tell which bike is faster 0-200 km ?? thanks
any one can tell which one of these 2 lovely bikes faster 0-200 KM? Thanks
hamad1979 The bmw ofcourse its one of the fastest bikes on the planet
Is bmw s1000r is cheaper than the ktm?
Yes, 3-4k depends on equipment of s 1000 r
*****
I was actually calculating and in Netherlands with both package included with alarm and couple of other parts price is close to standard price of SDR. So if you add all this extra on SDR it is way off...
You can go 250 without shitting your pants...:)))) Love it... Danke
How come you have to involve the price when you compare the performance of the two bikes? Shouldn't that be the customers job, and not yours?
Prestanda per krona?

Det är en dålig jämförelse tycker jag. hade ena hojen varit hälften så dyr men presterat hälften så bra, så hade det i så fall varit lika stor skillnad i PPK men i praktiken så skulle den hojen vara värdelös.
It is my job too.
it is definitely worth mentioning in the review. yes the customer has to weigh up the options for themselves, but a test ride from a dealer won't be anywhere near as long as the media get with the bikes. a sense of "this bike is almost as good for much cheaper" is worth knowing. as is the suggestion that if it is your last day then the KTM is the bike.
Take note from this review MCN...
LOL, MCN seems to always have sound issues on their videos.
KTM Superduke R all the way
Even in the company of the 1077 Tuono, I'd still take the KTM. Because effortless torque for days.

La S1000r est juste parfaite !!
I just one of each to keep my S1000RR company.
Mantap Broo
Por que esta en español el titulo y habla en ingles?
If you want to shit your pants, go with KTM, if you wanna ride like a grandma go with BMW :D
txs for the english ;)
Sin dudarlo, y aun teniendo actualmente una KTM 1190 Adventure, me declino por la BMW...por el servicio postventa tan malo que tiene KTM en España...
1000ps: more english videos please!!!
KTM is best
hah, accent needs some work. I was struggling to understand at some points, so I turned on CC. that made it even more difficult.
ktm is the bst
