Hey Mat, I'm one of your fans from Kenya. The road you just mentioned is mostly dangerous in December due to the fact that many people are rushing in the Countryside for Christmas Holiday.
Just giving you an update, the 2nd Chinese road from Sichuan to Tibet is mainly paved doulbe lane road now, the condition is far more better than it in the video, even sedans can travel with no problem though it is still pretty dangerous to drive on.
Damn, that isn't that unusual here in the States. Small prop planes that can't make it to an airport use wide roads or occasionally Interstates to land. Surprisingly I don't hear of them causing that many accidents. Guess if you can see an aircraft coming in low lined up with the road, it's a good sign to slow down and maybe pull over!
When I was a kid we took a trip from Sao Paulo to the South! On our way back, there were 5 overturned lorries out of the road on the BR 116! It was night and very wet, my father used the 4x4 of his old Hyundai Galloper the hole way to get better grip. It happened at the exact part of the road that Mat pointed out! What an eventful lovely night it was!

As a cyclist, I'd say the Yungas Road looks reasonably safe for cycling as long as you're going uphill. Or, in general, really slow. Just stick to the mountain side of the road. Judging from what I've seen of it (mostly Top Gear), the view is amazing... I'd never ever go anywhere near it in a car though.
