This is absolutely amazing, at this point I would like the entire GTA series on a Dreamcast lol
We could get GTA 1 - VCS, San Andreas and Vice City Stories could be difficult
@@Volition_To_The_Max Vice City, Liberty City Stories, and Vice City Stories could be possible, but the VC games might need to be split into two disks. San Andreas on the other hand seems impossible.
@@PracticeBot13 I think San Andreas is possible, but would be *very* difficult. It's better to ignore a SA port, most consoles and computers now can play San Andreas anyways
Vice City could definitely fit on one disc, VCS might need two discs though.
The most realistic thing would probably be VC, although I think some audio tracks would need to be cut if we want it to fit.
San Andreas is way too big to even consider running properly.
LCS and VCS are in a difficult position due to them using a slightly different engine from Renderware, although LCS is closer to VC than VCS is. Heavy optimizations are needed though, because LCS ran horribly on original hardware, dipping to 22FPS and below all the time.
I hope that I am mistaken and the GTA 3 port upon its completion will speed up eventual progress of the other GTA games to Dreamcast. Vice City is possible, I am certain of it.
@@kotohime we wouldn't need to cut anything from VC, I think San Andreas is possible, but would take a long time, and would also be very difficult. I'm sure that the Dreamcast has more powerful hardware than the PS2.
I can't wait for the final release of this. I really hope to see Monkey Ball on the Dreamcast
Rather monkey ball deluxe, but yeah, that and vice city would be awesome.
It’s possible. Just need to port over the Naomi version since it’s essentially the same hardware
That is not how it works though @@justinpirelli2839
@@justinpirelli2839 Naomi has a faster clocked GPU, twice the RAM and twice the VRAM. Porting games from it is doable but no small feat.
@@pam8352 there is no source code or decompilation for that.
There's sound! Wow this is looking incredible. I can't believe this is all running on Dreamcast.
Would be nice to see the Xbox games that started their life as DC games come back to the DC.
Yes, panzer dragoon orta, Toe jam earl, gun valkyere so many
I'd be interested to see what Fable TLC would look like!
Looking sharp , and i guess there is still room for improvements. Everyone involved are doing an awsome job. Keep up the good work. Good video Guru !
Oooooh yes, there is still room for improvements and optimizations... The main optimization pass where we're REALLY going to go to town isn't even going to happen until the very end, when we have everything at least up and drawing, on the renderer-side.
@@FalcoGirgis that sounds very promising , im pretty sure with right optimizations the Dreamcast is a beast (considering when it was released). Keep it up ❤️
@@FalcoGirgisany hints about what's the final optimization pass gonna do ?
I'd say we have some rough ideas on the graphics side of the team, but since we haven't even figured out how we think the final T&L loop should look, we haven't calculated anything, and we're still missing so much functionality, I think it's best to play it safe for the sake of both not wanting to disappoint our fans and not wanting to give our haters ammunition to use against us, in case we come up short... So I'm not really going to project or say anything other than we are going to try our absolute damnedest and give this project all we've got!
@@FalcoGirgis This is insanely impressive! Are you guys looking at making multiple versions at all? As in one version for stock 16MB consoles and a version for say overclocked 32MB consoles? Basically make it work on a normal console and then add some enhancements back in for those of us with a bit beefier systems? I'm not sure what those enhancements might be (widescreen mode, slightly higher res textures, improved framerate, longer draw distance), but I am curious to hear what you guys think would even be possible.
Amazing work. Vice City maybe one day. Dreamcast is 25yrs old and still casting dreams. Can't wait for Sonic Mania Plus on DC
Your post just bought a tear to this sega fanboy’s eyes.
WOW it wasnt too long ago some were saying the DC wasnt going to get any further than previous video footage but THIS proves they were talking out of their arse! This is taking shape nicely! And the framerate is now much better. Cannot wait to see the final release.
Every step of the way, man, they've doubted the DC and us devs. First it wouldn't work without 32MB of RAM. Then it wouldn't all fit onto a disc. Then it wouldn't run at more than 5fps. Then it won't work without audio... The goal post moves with every update, but... Oh well, it's motivating to me to prove those people wrong. lol.
@@FalcoGirgis And in the end you are going to shut them all up with a great conversion of this classic! You are doing a fantastic job!
@@FalcoGirgis true that haters going to hate!
Why would someone hate on this project? Is it hate, when people have different oppinions? Is this our discussion culture nowadays? Different oppinion = enemy?@@cooiolhh8955
@@FalcoGirgis the lighting system is massively inferior to the PS2 one (it's look like lighting system on lobotomy software games on Saturn), and since it's here the popup and framerate is worse (and let's not talk about the rain who is a big it on the framerate...). oh, and the game fit on a CD only because you used compression tool who were unable in the 2000.
In alternative universe we're waiting for premiere of Sega Dreamcast 5 Pro.
Slim edition
An alternative universe where we're on Shenmue 20 and just wishing it would end.
The awesome devs working on this have done amazing work, it's looking great
Glad to see Dreamcast is still alive in 2024
4:16 finally doors open and close !
The simple fact that this is getting done is legendary ... I think the visuals once cleaned up shouldn't be an issue, but the smaller GD Disc format size might make this a 2 Disc game if it's able to run on real hardware.
Cracked pc releases of the game without the radio took up around 300mb (VC too) and apparently after some audio compression and trickery the game now amounts to 406mb.
The game already runs on real hardware and the game is less than 1gb, it fits on a CD no issue.
@@esppiral that's incredible..!
The PC version is on CD, disc size is a non-issue. Worry not my guy.
Insane work by the devs! I hope we will see things like proper vertex lighting, reflections, fog etc. Considering how far this has come, they will probably get there eventually! :D
If you are talking about distance fog that is super simple and free for DC so just more a bit of code fix to do.
If you talk about local fog like haze or above road then it’s more down to particles and then not eating up to much fillrate
@@litjellyfish yeah, I was more thinking about the hardware distance fog support. I'm a game developer myself but haven't dived into the nitty gritty of hardware-close Dreamcast development... From my understanding both distance fog and vertex lighting shouldn't have impact on performance. reflections on the other hand tend to include multi-texturing which requires an extra texturing pass. (but due to tile-based rendering it should only affect the rendering time of the specific tiles utilizing multi-texturing). I guess they could do reflections with with vertex coloring tricks as well
@@PixelShade yes you are correct about fog and vertex color.
When it comes to reflection pass it’s a bit less nice. DC do not support dual texturing so you need to resubmit that vertex data. L
Happy Birthday Dreamcast! Biggest underdog of gaming.
This is amazing, the console is coming back to life again!
Younger people today have no idea how annoying it was having a powerful Dreamcast, knowing it could probably run GTA3 and then seeing GTA3 release initially only for the PS2. It's great to see GTA3 playable on the Dreamcast!
But the fps sucks on this
It runs, but it's definitely not playable, the game is completely broken graphically. PS2 was more powerful, without a doubt, so for dc to run gta3 some cuts have to be made.
Amazing as always!
🙌🏼
It is on! I surely got caught a bit in this GTA 3 hype again!
Ooooh, I want a demo WIP so badly!! 😍
Just shows the raw power the dreamcast had for the time, really wish the dreamcast was successful, who knows what it woulda pulled off on later games
It just keeps getting better, holy crap this is awesome
This is very impressive, I wish rockstar had continued with it back then.
I am guessing the textures could be bumped up significantly as development continues like the radio system not restarting every time. Very cool stuff
The 1GB size limit is probably affecting the textures and ratio sound quality heavily.
@@laggmonster99 the original PC game came on a CD-ROM.
Makes me wanna shed tears of joy every time I see progress on this. It's a dream come true.
me too. it's one of my dreams come true. god i've spent years wish-casting if grand theft auto 3 had launched on the dreamcast. it would have helped the system stay alive
This is amazing. I hope the Sonic Mania DC port is still happening as well
Of course it is!!!
Oh yes indeed, still being worked on :)
Thanks for the video for DC's anniversary.
It's already running way better than the 3DS port (which only works on the New 3DS), it's very impressive how quickly this port is progressing.
The fact the game runs AT ALL is very impressive
well yes and no. It runs on a crappy Renderware engine so it is portable to almost anything within reason.
🎉🎉🎉Happy 25 anniversary to one of my all time favourite console first game i saw when i first time walk in the arcade back in christmas eve 1999 was virtua striker 2 as i entered i still remember the announcer screaming the infamous GOOOOOAAAAAL 🎉🎉Wow i was completely blown away also it was on a big plasma projection screen not a regular crt arcade machine also my mum was amazed by the size of that tv maybe it was nearly 40 inch considering home tv were 20 inch crt oh man those were the days❤
the best game for the best game console. can't wait. I've never played GTA 3 only in Vice City and San Andreas :'3
I cant wait for this one 😮
Amazing you guys are the best
Wow I can’t believe you did them I am amazed
It's impressive on the Dreamcast
This game should have existed in the early 2000s for the DreamCast
4:13 the door shuts now! 🚗
My right ear is celebrating the Dreamcast.
For anyone who doesn't know, this game was being developed for Dreamcast and PS2 at the same time and, based on what the alpha and beta releases shared by those two versions looked like in development versus final release on PS2, it looks like textures were vastly upgraded following the DC port's cancellation amid failing sales and its eventual discontinuation (similar situation to Half Life on DC).
i love old school gta
Happy b day dc!
GrEaT WoRk ! Guru!
Thanks my friend :) Very much appreciate the support :)
I wonder if someone could make a bootable .cdi so we can burn it to a disc and play on real hardware
Think about it, developers don't seem to ever really start tapping into a consoles true power until the 4th or 5th year. Dreamcast lasted what? Barely 2. That's why you start seeing games with much better graphics and mechanics towards the end of the consoles life cycle. Look at the Atari Jaguar towards the end, developers started figuring it out, and it legitimately had power and audio on par with PS1, N64 and Saturn. But it was too late. The PS1 had some amazing looking games towards the end. And imo Driver was really amazing on the PS1 how open world it was for it's time. For the Dreamcast just look at Shenmue, that game came out in the first year of the console. Shenmue proved the Dreamcast had power. The biggest limitations was the CD ROM type. I just couldn't imagine GTA 3 having multiple discs.
GTA3 holds within 406MB. You can feet the game nearly 3 times over in one GD-Rom.
Evening AL oh yeh it's sure coming along isn't it
It’s like looking into an alternate universe where the Dreamcast was more successful
The cherry on the cake would be an online feature… yeah, I know I am dreaming, but isn’t it the concept of the DREAMcast ? 😅
This port is not even finished and everyone’s like “MORE MORE MORE!!!!” Can’t we just appreciate what we have for fucking once.
unbelievable
man, I remember the rumors of someone working on GTA3 for DC back in 2002-2003. At the same time... a guy was also working on a project called grand theftendo... what did that become? Retro City Rampage
Also I Think that it would be a good idea if they port Vice City and San Andrese to Dreamcast
Only a matter of time
vice city 🔥🔥🔥
Vice City was bulit on top of what created for GTA III so it is possible. San Andreas is a lot more demanding. I think it is completely off the table.
So Only Vice City
Any other before San Andreas? Most likely it'll be ported to DC, San Andreas most likely not as it is a more advanced and packed engine, the same used in Bully.
I actually told my Mom and Step father I wanted GTA 3 for DC, I hadn’t heard but just thought since they had the first one surely they’d port thus one. They’re asking a young store worker in the video section , who I’m assuming is a gamer as well “ he asked you to get THIS?… there isn’t one “ . Usually it’s the parents who are incorrect but I just hoped I Guess since at the time I didn’t have a PS2
Cool❤
Look very good. Many major bugs are gone now
Everyday it gets better and more polished - Just have to remember this is pre-alpha, so just imagine where it'll be at the alpha point. Should be awesome! Thanks for watching and commenting my friend :)
@@thesegaguru yes, i realise this
The Dreamcast launched 3 months earlier than me lmao
I just imagined you being born like that one Sony advert where the baby gets launched across the place lmao.
If Dreamcast went with DVD and had Gta 3, I honestly think it would have won the console war.
III is my favorite, unpopular opinion, I know. To see this on my favorite system is just awesome. I always felt weird having a PS2 after the DC died as it was kinda partially responsible for it happening. So this is kinda sweet belated revenge.
I would LOVE to see any Persona games on the Dreamcast
GTA3 for Dreamcast im happy yea❤❤❤😊😊😊😊
we need halo 1, vice city, san andreas, super mario 64, ocarina of time did i miss anything ? love you devs keep it up you are doing gods work.
Dreamcast would not be able to handle Halo 1. xbox was too powerful
ANXIETY!!!
I would love to play the arcade version of Tekken Tag Tournament on DC. Max Payne too.
That would be bad azz
Max Payne for the Dreamcast is in my plans, it'll be a while before development starts though
Max Payne is definitely better suited to the DC than the ps2. Tekken Tag would still look decent but no doubt a lot of the npc characters/crowd in the background would be cut, ditto the fog and some lighting effects
@@eponymous7910 he said the arcade version which looks more like Tekken 3 I'm sure the DC can handle it no problem
tony hawk pro skater 3 on dreamcast would be my dreamport
I want a Liberty City Stories port to Dreamcast, with the PS2 atmosphere and the Liberty Jam radio station skipping glitch fixed. 1998 setting, sounds suitable for Dreamcast.
How do I get a copy!???
Cant wait till they add the dynamic lights and fix the billboard z clipping.
What, you don't think the effects we just got implemented are the dynamic lights? ...shit, this guy knows too much! LOL.
jk jk. On it!
@@FalcoGirgislegend!
I’d have to check on this but I think the lamp posts cast a light one at a time. Each light gets culled as you pass through the environment.I don’t think the car gets lit by more than one light at the time in the original game. Could be wrong, but this should not impact performance much if at all.
@wordsshackles441 correct the light turns off at the edge of the falloff. I dont think the limit is 1 but the lights on the map are far enough away from each other where it doesnt matter. But a limit is probably a good idea after all. Especially for car lights which i cant remember if the contributed to dynamic lights or not.
@@micThurrr Yes. It's hard to tell because of the cubemap but the player's car appears to be lit by 1 directional light at any given time with a diffuse reflection model, so it's not even specular. The specular property of the body is approximated by a non-scrolling generic cube map that is not updated at render time (no need for render to texture operation).
I don't expect it will impact performance at this point.
Looks better than the ps2 in some ways. Cleaner brighter colors
Well it’s because the objects are not vertex lit. Turn of lighting on PS2 and it would look the same.
If this look better I guess is a matter of taste. For me it’s flat non lit PS1 look of it
It should be noted that this is running at PC settings. None of the cut backs that were needed to get it running on the Playstation 2.
That's insane.
Some models have been reworked (they have lower poly counts now). It's no longer accurate to say it's just PC settings
I would have to think simplified geometry is better for the frame rate at the moment because other bugs are hindering performance like memory leaks. The DC should have no issues pushing at least as many triangles as the PS2. A final version of this will probably be close if not on par with PC just at a sub HD resolution unless the option is there for those who have modded their Dreamcast or for those who want to emulate it in 720 or 1080p
@@ike789125 Fairly certain that the optimised models they're using right now are the ones that will ship in the final release. AFAIK there aren't any plans to "revert" back to PC models
I hope someone ports the game to GameCube so we can have GTA 3 on all major 6th gen systems!
would have been such a nice addition to GC's library back in the day
Already looking better than the definitive edition! Crazy the dreamcast is running this game good job guys!
She never got caught because she had a black bag over her head.
It could have been released!!!!!! 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
That's so so cool! I used to play crazy taxi and think "if DC can do this why can't it do gta3?"
Can't wait to download this one 👌
Is the aim to have it work on original hardware or is it only usable via emulation?
GTA III DC works on both original hardware and emulation
Wow, the renderer is advancing at lightspeed!
It's really 2 1/2 months until the 26th anniversary

Monkey ball or sonic mania? Gta 3 is crazy tho!! ❤
Sonic Mania was ported to Dreamcast by SonicFreak94.
The Japanese Dreamcast you showed turned 25 last year.
It was more for illustration purposes 🔥🙂
If you're talking ps2 games that have code available, I'd say gta Vice City and jak and daxter are the next games on the list of ports.
True that!
no way the crappy Dreamcast hardware can run Jak and Daxter. At least not faithfully. The GTA series isnt surprising since it used renderware and was a weak engine even by PS2 standards. If you played the Getaway or Driver Parallel Lines on ps2, you would realize how awful GTA looked and ran on PS2 hardware compared to other titles.
@@wpatric6449 did somebody say something? I can't hear through the fanboy talk 👂👂
@@DreamcastFreak lol well he's not wrong. DC could never run Jak or som'n like getaway. Vice city might be feasible though 💪
@mitchmurray2260 Sure, same was said for gta3, yet here we are. I think every game that ran on ps2 can run on DC. Yes, they'd have cuts to effects and maybe poly counts, maybe even performance, but would easily look similar and have the same features. Idk why people think DC is so weak that it can't run a first-generation jack and daxter game. Hell, i think it would arguably look better on DC, considering the ps2 version was a jagged mess.
"Ports being worked on of other games that people have been wanting for a very long time on the system", huh?
Yep. Definite confirmation of a Daytona USA/Scud Race related port. And by definite I mean please, please, pppPLeAsE give me a scud race port😭 (although its propably MGS2 or GT3).

Will this have a physical release? I still play my launch Dreamcast to this day.
I can’t imagine so if I’m honest
Mgs 2
Dreamcast is way too weak and could never run that game. Because unlike the very poor Renderware GTA3 engine, MGS2 actually uses the power advantages that PS2 has over Dreamcast.
Hopefully someone puts this out physically once its completed
Nobody will. Simply because it costs money and if he does it it will amount to theft and receiving stolen goods.

If they do what you say, they will face trial and the outright destruction of all the work they have done so far. That would be a shame, right?
This is the time when games starting to do face expressions
Maybe I should clone the repo and compile a version myself.
Things look mostly fine, the horizontal line annoys me the most really and I couldn't tell controls from what's written in the hint boxes as this is still using PC defaults.
Getting rid of the horizontal line is a one-line hack you can do... We just don't want to remove anything, because it clearly shows what still needs to be fixed. lol.
I thought the black faces are allready fixed? Is this not the newest update?
Yeah I saw an other video too where in the intro the girl don't had a black face.
Because there a few different ports being work on by different ppl ! One may be working on this and another on the fps etc!
Yeah, faces were already fixed by Frogbull, but his work has not yet been merged into the master branch. This is just the renderer, audio, and input work merged together... We need to get that into the master branch as well!
@@FalcoGirgis thank u, and to the rest of the team working on this ! Dreamcast4life!
