I have a 1949 3hp. Still starts and runs great, Most reliable outboard Ive owned. Pushes my 10' jon boat or 14' canoe nicely. Every year I take it out of the garage, drop it in the test tank and within 2-3 pulls its running. perfect for trolling all day.
I have several outboard motors, and my '67 Evinrude Lightwin 3 is my favorite. It's the last year they made this engine with the all metal case, like the one here. Wasn't running when I found it. Replaced the seals in the lower unit, gave it a new impeller, points, condensers, fuel line and filter, flushed the tank, rebuilt the carburetor. Replaced the head gasket and checked the cylinders for scoring. Runs like a champ. So smooth.
@@nickgrossmeyer5468 33:1 (4 oz/gallon) OMC TCW-3. Manufacturer allowed for 50:1 for that year, if I recall. But the earlier ones were 16:1, so I went the conservative route. Always ran clean with low amounts of smoke.
I've just aquired one of those. The magnetos were bad so I replaced them with two car ignition coils but still use the original points for correct timing. It now needs a 12 volt battery to run so the next step is to rewind the old magnetos to give a suitable output to charge the battery. The system might even provide some extra power to run other things on the boat.
I also have the same motor! "Evinrude Lightwin 3HP model 3022", I love it on my stern-back canoe. it was a dumpster dive from a township clean-up. it had freeze damage in the lower unit which i was able to repair with a little welding! good as new! you have got to appreciate the ignorant among us
It's a 1954. I have had a hard time finding out what model it is. Looks like a Topper. I also have a 1954 Evinrude 7 1/2 hp Fleetwin that I usually run on this boat. Thanks--
All lightwins have the angle drive. Or it's a yachtwin with lower gear ratio, 90 degree drive and a less pitch 3 blade prop. For pushing heavier boats.
Hi please help. I have the same exact motor. It wouldn't start, so I noticed one of the sparks was bad. Changed the sparks. Trying to test with spark tester while pulling the cord to start it and spark tester does not light up. Any idea what the problem could be?
It most likely is bad coils. But you don’t need a spark tester, you can use the spark plug to see if there’s any spark. Just make sure the plug is touching a non-painted metal part of the outboard when you pull the starter rope. Take both plugs out - it makes it easier to pull on the rope and especially if you’re working by yourself.
Boy does that take me back! I got one of those for my buirthday when I was 6 (1952). It was a great little motor-- wish I still had it!

It has the weedless drive with the 2 blade prop. Love these little motors.

That little Lightwin moves your 14' boat really well. Does it have the angled "weedelss" drive with 2 blade prop or the right angle drive?
