Pretty much everyone knows this song. It was written by 4 English songwriters, their answer to a call for nuclear disarmament, John wasn't supposed to record/release it, but he did, in September 1986, which basically relaunched his solo career. "You're the Voice" peaked at No. 1 on the Australian singles charts. The associated album, Whispering Jack, held the No. 1 position for a total of 25 weeks. Both the single and the album had top-ten success internationally, including No. 6 in the United Kingdom and No.1 in Sweden. Presently, it remains the highest-selling album in Australia by an Australian artist. John is the only Australian artist to have a number-one record (album or single) in five consecutive decades. (6, if you want to count that the recently released Documentary - "John Farnham - Finding the Voice" broke the box office, and two of his albums went back up into the top 20).

Whenever you see John fiddling with the mic stand, you know he's about to do some sort of trick with it 😁
This song is in the hearts of all Aussies, the meaning of the message is the same today, as it was back then.
The whole world does need to hear this, John Farnham, and his music brings people together as one.

Every Australian knows every word to this song 😁 That's why many consider it an unofficial national anthem. There are a handful of other amazing songs that also fit into the unofficial national anthem category for Australia.
Compare that with the fact that most of us only know the first verse of our official National anthem...

😂 John is well know for his mike stand tossing and foot flicking tricks. He misses the catch sometimes but never misses the foot flick. 😂😂
When the mic still had a chord he did some even better tricks swirling the chord around.
Check out his performance of One from 1987. Not only powerful vocals but he tossed around that mic like a pro.
Ps it's one of his earlier hits that he first recorded in the 60's.

You'd be hard pressed to find an Aussie who doesn't know this song. 4 generations of my family love it and love John.
It first came out in 1986 and is still played on our radios stations almost every day. It's played at every australia day celebration and pretty much every big event and football finals.
John doesnt just have a powerful voice ...but many of his song's have powerful messages of unity.
For a change of pace, have a listen to Playing to Win live from the Chain Reaction concert (1990)

As an Australian I'm not surprised by anyone outside Australia being unfamiliar with most of our music scene - from it's earliest days until now. I'd say the music that makes it's way internationally is the tip of the iceberg. If you looked up the best Australian bands my guess is you wouldn't know most of them.

Yep, we all know the song. Farnsey is a bloody legend!

  • @Saan42
    @Saan42 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Lol, you're getting very caught up in whether you know the song or not - it's highly unlikely that you will know any of his songs. He was/is massive in Australia, but never broke in the US (he was pretty happy to live a relatively down-to-earth and normal life with his family in Australia - and why not, he had everything he needed here).
And yep, this was performed in 1989, the song and album it's off were released in 1986. This was his comeback album after languishing in relative obscurity for quite a few years - he was actually a teen pop idol here in the late 60s/early 70s. Every Australian does indeed know this song :) Play this in a pub and you will find all the Aussies straight away.
Thanks for the reaction, hope to see you do more of his stuff, his voice will only blow you away more and more the more stuff you hear - he is incredibly versatile.
As a general rule, if you're looking for live stuff (which you should - always) from him, try this show first (with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra), or the Chain Reaction concert, or the Whispering Jack concert, as they will usually be best quality. There is still plenty to watch outside of these though!
Next I'd suggest watching a duet with Jimmy Barnes called "When Something Is Wrong (With My Baby)". Jimmy is also musical royalty here in Australia and also has a great voice (although no-one beats John for me). Search for the version from Hey Hey It's Saturday (an 80s variety show in Australia) as it is the best :)

The only problem I have with a lot of these yt videos of John is that they’re sound and video quality doesn’t do it justice, especially when there’s an orchestra. I’ve put up a HD remastered version of this where I’ve EQ’d vocals and instrumentals and it’s the full version of the song (this isn’t).. I’d love to do the whole lot of them eventually but have to challenge copyright every time 😂 I’m really loving your work btw you seem like great people but more importantly you know your stuff which is refreshing in this reactor scene ❤❤❤ 🇦🇺 🦘

Of all those that have reacted to this performance, you are the only one that realised John did a baton twirl with the mic stand; before throwing it across stage. John playing around with the mic stand seems to be his thing; and even though his wife Jill has told him not to do it, he cheekily still does. He has a great rapour with his audience. He doesn't just sing a song, he sings to his audience; they are the most important part of his concerts, he has said this time and time again.

    • @sandgroperwookiee65
      @sandgroperwookiee65 ปีที่แล้ว

      For those interested...🤔😄
      John also rides/rode quarter horses.
(Tamworth is the Country music Capitol of Australia)....
"The riding-mad superstar singer won the celebrity cutting horse title at the national championships in Tamworth, NSW.
Riders have to cut steers out of a herd - and John was the best guest on horseback. Some of the celebrities were crap riders. Others were crack riders, including living legend Bill Roycroft, five-time Olympian and Australia's greatest-living horseman. And no kidding, John Farnham beat him.
"John's a nice rideer, no risk," said Bill, who's a bit past his prime at 78 - but still looks as fit as he did at the 1960 Rome Olympics when he won a gold medal with a broken collarbone.
And Farnsie reckons those words and winning the blue mean as much to him as any achievement.
"Sure, I've had success in my life in a lot of ways," he said. " But winning here is up there with anything - I'll cherish it.":
John got keen on cutting three years ago and now breeds pure quarter horses in Victoria. But he wishes he'd saddled up sooner. "If I could have my time over I wish I could have ridden from about age five on," he said. Farnsie keeps a low profile, steering well clear of any celebrity horseshit.
"Everyone is more interested in their horses than they are in me" he said. That's the stuff the bushies love. Farnsies horsemanship and down-to earth attitude has won him mates all over.
"He comes up here and rides and doesn't show off," said top local horseman Joe Dwyer. "He was a novice rider who has stuck to it and he can hold his own. If anyone started giving him trouble they'd get a right serve."
But not Farnsie, he'd much sooner cut and run."

There’s so much great stuff from John out there but yes as you already said you need to do it to a live performance, where possible. The exception is John doing “black dog from Led Zeppelin” which wasn’t exactly a live performance. John uses it as a warm up song/sound check and one day someone pressed record and it’s awesome. Also John singing “let me out”, live of course, it’s awesome and there are many more gems out there.

Don't know what happened there but the song goes on for quite a while. Incredible long term backing singers Lisa Edwards, Lindsay Field and Venetta Fields. Little known fact that Venetta was one of the original "Ikettes", the backup singers for Ike and Tina Turner. She has also performed with Pink Floyd, Humble Pie, Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond, Steely Dan, Boz Scaggs, Bob Seger, the Rolling Stones, Bette Midler, Joe Cocker and Bob Dylan. She toured Australia with Boz in 1980 and relocated here in 1982. As well as Farnsey she has also performed with Barnsey of Cold Chisel. Absolutely brilliant career!

Check out his cover of Long Way to the Top by ACDC from the same concert, shows a bit more of his range... Btw, You're the Voice has beem used here very recently in the debate over giving the indigenous population of Australia a representative body in Parliament. Also, the lyrics do have import due to the timing, which was the end of the Cold War, thus the lines about living in fear and having a chance to speak up after years of fear of nuclear war...

You need to go back and listen to it again, listen to the words and the message which is quite powerful. Also, he threw the mike stand up in the air and caught it first, then threw it across the stage and retrieved it later... all without missing a beat on his music! Yes - most Aussies know all the words to this song which was actually used just recently around a referendum to give a Voice to our First Nations in the constitution and John agreed to have this song used.

    The unifficial Aus natl anthem.
Ann wilson vovered it quite well!
You asked if every Auddie knows the song? Check out the Cold play w/ john Farmham version of it performed live at a festival in Aus. Every prrson in the audience is belting out the voc. Impressive to say the least.

You need to listen to John Farnham- gethseme from Jesus Christ Superstar, Black Dog, Amazing Grace, Granada with Anthony Warlow, it’s a long Way to the Top from the same concert.

You might like to view the same song from Coldplay concert in Australia with special guest John Farnham. At age 70 years he still sings in the same key and hits the same notes.

It is our Aussie unofficial anthem . We love it ! It is telling the world throw away your guns . You shouldn’t live in fear of war or people with guns . Like Australia give up your guns . No more school shootings , people losing kids is more important than some last century 3rd amendment rules . Give them up . Save your country .

The follow up song to this is Age of Reason. A great sequel song. They are in my opinion, a pigeon pair.

The Voice was Johns only solo international No1 hit, but in Australia , h I s first No1 was in 1967 and continued up to his last No1 album about 2015, ( i think ).
Help ( a Beatles cover ) and A Long Way To The Top ( AC/DC cover ) from this same concert are much better than The Voice.
The audio only cover of Black Dog ( Led Zepplin) will leave you speachless.
Audio only because its a warm up and sound check taped by one of the roadies.
For vocal purists ( not rock purists ) i recommend Gethsemane from a 1990 production of Superstar and his early ( younger ) cover of Bridge Over Troubled Water.
Also his many duets with international stars like Tom Jones, Celine Dion AND....
The best of all, his duet with Jimmy Barnes and Diesel on guitar......a cover of Sam n Dave's When Something is Wrong With My Baby.
Always do John Farnham live........he is as good as Pink Floyd.
