They are no longer around but I listen to Voyage and I keep thinking of them and it hits me emotionally. Like everyone else. That's how loved ABBA are. In fact my whole family loved them.

I'm a big fan of Tori Amos. She's got a beautiful voice and is a wonderful songwriter/pianist. I am also a big fan of the non hard rock acts Wilco and Beck and of course I would never turn down an invitation to attend a concert by The Cure.
I hear ya mate. I once saw Tori in Vicar Street in Dublin, and she started playing the intro's to classic rock songs. When she did 'Wild Horses' I shouted out "Sticky Fingers". She stopped and said "Honey, you have no idea!" hahaha
I grew up on the diet of Heep, Purple, Yes, ELP - all the Prog/Rock/Metal bands of the 1970's and had very little time for anything else. I got married in 1981 and in 1985 the whole thing fell apart. I spent a lot of time trying to make sense of it. Then I heard one song that suddenly gave me the kick up the backside I needed. That song was so far out of my comfort zone but it spoke to me. I no longer pretended that we would get back together, I moved to a new town on a job transfer, made a whole bunch of new friends and since then I have never let music genre limit me. That song was/is "Carpenters - Hurting Each Other". It changed my life and also opened a world of music I had denied before. A lot of those you guys mention - Earth Wind And Fire, Kate Bush, ABBA, the brilliant Alison Moyet, Frank Sinatra. But to pick one - Roy Orbison, especially the In Dreams album.
Roy Orbison might be the most underrated artist in the history of music. His voice was otherworldly and he was one of the most innovative songwriters in rock 'n roll.
Great post Terry. I guess it's about emotional maturity and it takes most of us a long while to really find our identity. It's a lifetime journey. The Carpenters and Roy Orbison recorded some of the greatest music of all time. It's a revelation when we 'discover' these artists for ourselves. Glad it all worked out for you.

Pat Benatar’s first 4 albums were good, also Heart was good and then the first 4 Devo albums were awesome and the first few Gary Numan albums were pretty good as well and of course Kraftwerk was awesome.
He is the heart of rock and roll, so why not? :) Seriously though, anything I grew up with, I didn't stop liking when I got into metal. I still have a soft spot for them. The first albums I ever bought were Bryan Adams (self titled) and John Cougar Mellencamp- I think it was called Scarecrow. As I've gotten older I've widened my interests even more.

The Madonna stuff, from her first several albums, was classic well written pop music, with of course, her amazing voice. I remember when I first heard "Live To Tell" when I was a small kid, and I still think it's one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Great album, terrible cover. Poor Frida, her dress looks like something they made of an old parachute, and they stuck a christmas decoration to cover up her cleavage.

As a life long hard rock / metal head I've liked all of Prince's stuff up through purple Rain. (4-5 albums).In high school (early 80s) my black light posters were Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin, ACDC. Then non black light posters were Iron Maiden, Van Halen and Prince. I've recently saw a video called "Fallen brother" by Kreator and they paid homage to many heavy musicians who passed up through 2017 and Prince was one. I knew then I wasn't alone.
Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when Sports came out in 83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically.
Under Wraps is awesome! Sure, it's the furthest removed from the organic Tull we love, but the musicianship and arrangements are tight, and the songs are super-catchy. But, this is coming from someone who loves Kraftwerk, Thomas Dolby, and early-'80s Zappa (including the later Synclavier experiments), so it didn't strike me too funny when I first heard it. Can't say if Ian Anderson was listening to any of these artists, but there are some similarities here and there. At different points, I heard that both Martin Barre and Ian Anderson thought highly of the album. Don't know what they think as of current.

There's a couple others I that might fall into "Guilty Pleasures" lists, but 80s Phil Collins, Mike Oldfield, Bee Gees (can't explain it, but Bee Gees are still as they were in the 70s for me). And the one I probably get the most shit for is Neil Diamond's, "Heartlight".
Kate Bush is anything but 'guilty pleasure'. Guilty pleasures would be Sheb Wooley, Archies, Stacey Q, Samantha Fox, New Kids on the Block, Pussycat Dolls, Beyonce etc... and Barry M qualifies.

Brought MAIN COURSE along on a road trip with 3 other friends. They all laughed when I put it into the CD player but by the first chorus, everyone was singing along! That went on for the whole disk. Pure "guilty pleasure".
I’d say Duran Duran (classic lineup). I always thought their tunes were amazingly catchy, well produced, plus they were good players. Another guilty pleasure of mine is mid 70’s Elvis Presley. Songs like “Kentucky Rain”, “Way Down”, etc.
Deja Voodoo They were pretty great. I remember “Girls on Film” was considered pretty racy at the time so they had an “adult” version and an MTV version.
Duran Duran is great. I even have a few of their more recent albums. I have the first 2 Elvis albums, but after that it was mostly soundtracks it seems.
Here's three from me. 1. Seal -- Loved those first two albums of his from the early to mid 90s. Always reminds me of Warren Miller ski movies. 2. America -- my go-to for kind of cheesy 70s soft rock (Horse With No Name, Ventura Highway, etc) 3. Mary J. I like some Cranberries as well. Definitely not the sort of stuff I normally listen to. I often hear guys saying they need to listen to more female vocalists. There are very few frontwomen/solo women I listen to, Dolores being one of them. She was a unique talent.
John Hamm Yeah. I don’t listen to a lot of female vocalists but it’s not by design. I do enjoy listening to Bjork, Goldfrapp, First Aid Kit, Beth Orton, Garbage, and Drain STH.
As a 56 yr old who's always been a classic rocker with an emphasis on metal and hard rock, I've always liked a lot of '70s pop (a bit of '80s pop too) as well as lots of '70 soul and R&B. I also worked in the dance club industry in the late '90s and early 2000s and was surprised when I found myself liking some techno. Also, I got dragged to a Shakira concert and absolutely loved it. Much more rock-oriented than I was expecting. I would definitely see her again.
Neil Diamond is a guilty pleasure for me. My best friend in high school played Hot August Night all the damn time and at the time I hated it cuz I was into rock and metal… but over the weeks and months…I grew to understand just how amazing Neil is as a songwriter. All good stuff!
Absolute consensus about how great Lady Gaga and Kate Bush are. I couldn’t agree more. How about some Sarah Brightman? She’s fantastic too. But also some of the eighties Diva’s : Kim Wilde, Nena, Nina Hagen. I’m not ashamed too admit I like that stuff. Definitely more enjoyable than Bon Jovi or your average Nu-metal band!

When I first heard "Emmylou" when it first came out they had me hooked instantly. Normally I don't care for that type of music but I love the way they harmonize. I recommended them to a friend a few years ago and she is now a big fan of them. Had to spread the word. 😁

I've a similar t shirt story. Back a few yrs ago I was going to see the eagles in dublin. I had a megadeth rust in peace shirt on. I didn't know that mettallica were playing dublin the same night. As myself and my brother were walking towards the eagles show we were meeting droves of mettallica fans walking in the opposite direction all heading to mettallica. I must have got stopped about 10 times by guys saying hey ure going the wrong way the mettallica gig is this way. True story.
Great show. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one with a skeleton in my closet, and also goes to show that those of us who enjoy heavy music can also appreciate other artists in other genres. For me, one of my guilty pleasures is the album “Happiness” by Hurts.
ABBA is funny. I don’t know if I’ve ever heard someone say they legitimately did NOT like ABBA. Everyone loves them! And rightfully so! That’s some great, catchy, up-beat music right there
I wouldn't really call them "guilty pleasures" as I hardly ever feel any guilt about liking something, but these are albums I like from genres that I rarely listen to: 1: Ramones-"Rocket to Russia". I hate punk rock, except for this album. They have a bunch of songs throughout there other albums I like, but this whole album is great top-to-bottom 2. B-52s-"Wild Planet". Don't like much New Wave, but I'm surprised by how much I love this album, espcially songs like "Private Idaho", "Give Me Back My Man", and "53 Miles West of Venus" 3. Concrete Blonde-"Bloodletting". Saw "Joey" on VH1 Classic once and thought it was really good. Decided to hear the album and this was first "Goth Rock" album I have liked. "Caroline", "Days and Days", "Bloodletting", and "The Beast" are all also great. 4. Debut Quarterflash album. Like almost every song on the album. "Harden My Heart" is fantastic and I love Rindy Ross's voice.
Sherbet is a band I've really gotten into recently. They were an Australian band from the 70s who later turned into the Sherbs in the 80s, which I remember them from songs like No Turning Back, I'm Alive and We Ride Tonight.
I'm with Pete with Barry Manilow, the guy is awesome. Also for me, Frank Sinatra, Adam And The Ants, The Police, Backstreet Boys (sorry!), Eric B and Rakim...just to name a few.

A great show by the Hudson Valley Squares. Chris proved to be just as funny without sound. Ryan’s impression of his dad talking about Tony Bennett also a great laugh. Nick’s choice of Kate Bush was a great mention and Pete really went for the skeletons. And on top of it all, as always some new music to track down and enjoy. Some of mine would be Dixieland jazz, big band music and Frank Sinatra. Mom was always playing Sinatra and other mail vocalists and would constantly quiz me about who was singing the song she was listening to on the radio. Thanks again, guys for two shows this week. The Dreaming is a classic album also. And like side 2 of Hounds of Love, side 2 of the Dreaming is also the masterpiece side of the album.

I love the new Unleash the Archer if you love metal/prog with a great female vocalist.
ABBA is pure pop genius! Every album has its own flavour, great songwriting with killer vocals.
Unleash the Archer are incredible! They new album is a candidate for my album of the year.
The Madonna stuff, from her first several albums, was classic well written pop music, with of course, her amazing voice. I remember when I first heard "Live To Tell" when I was a small kid, and I still think it's one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Since you love the song " Live To Tell" can you please tell me just what the song means ? It makes no sense to me.

As a life long hard rock / metal head I've liked all of Prince's stuff up through purple Rain. (4-5 albums).In high school (early 80s) my black light posters were Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin, ACDC. Then non black light posters were Iron Maiden, Van Halen and Prince. I've recently saw a video called "Fallen brother" by Kreator and they paid homage to many heavy musicians who passed up through 2017 and Prince was one. I knew then I wasn't alone.
My guilty pleasure is Huey Lewis & the News. It's cheesy as hell, but I like the un-selfconscious joy in it.
Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when Sports came out in 83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically.
Those guys can rock hard on stage!!!!

Union is probably my favourite YES album 👀
Under Wraps is awesome! Sure, it's the furthest removed from the organic Tull we love, but the musicianship and arrangements are tight, and the songs are super-catchy. But, this is coming from someone who loves Kraftwerk, Thomas Dolby, and early-'80s Zappa (including the later Synclavier experiments), so it didn't strike me too funny when I first heard it. Can't say if Ian Anderson was listening to any of these artists, but there are some similarities here and there.
At different points, I heard that both Martin Barre and Ian Anderson thought highly of the album. Don't know what they think as of current.
guilty as charged....Under Wraps was an abomination too Tull fans as was Union...However the Union Tour was phenomenal....

I hated Under Wraps. I enjoy listening to it now. I saw Yes 4 times during the Union tour.
Suzi Quatro, Kate Bush, Abba, and Barry Manilow. There! I've said it. It's out now. I LOVE those artists and I probably will after nearly 40 years of listening to them since I was a child. There's a couple others I that might fall into "Guilty Pleasures" lists, but 80s Phil Collins, Mike Oldfield, Bee Gees (can't explain it, but Bee Gees are still as they were in the 70s for me). And the one I probably get the most shit for is Neil Diamond's, "Heartlight".

Brought MAIN COURSE along on a road trip with 3 other friends. They all laughed when I put it into the CD player but by the first chorus, everyone was singing along! That went on for the whole disk. Pure "guilty pleasure".
I’d say Duran Duran (classic lineup). I always thought their tunes were amazingly catchy, well produced, plus they were good players.
Another guilty pleasure of mine is mid 70’s Elvis Presley. Songs like “Kentucky Rain”, “Way Down”, etc.
Deja Voodoo They were pretty great. I remember “Girls on Film” was considered pretty racy at the time so they had an “adult” version and an MTV version.
Duran Duran is great. I even have a few of their more recent albums.
I have the first 2 Elvis albums, but after that it was mostly soundtracks it seems.

1. Seal -- Loved those first two albums of his from the early to mid 90s. Always reminds me of Warren Miller ski movies.
2. America -- my go-to for kind of cheesy 70s soft rock (Horse With No Name, Ventura Highway, etc)
3. Mary J. Blige -- queen of hip-hop soul (I think Pete and the Hudson Valley Squares just threw up in their mouths with this one ;-P )

I love this! What I take from this is that real people aren’t cardboard caricatures- we’re capable of the unexpected. And I love the confidence that is apparent in how you talk about these artists.

I like some Cranberries as well. Definitely not the sort of stuff I normally listen to. I often hear guys saying they need to listen to more female vocalists. There are very few frontwomen/solo women I listen to, Dolores being one of them. She was a unique talent.
John Hamm Yeah. I don’t listen to a lot of female vocalists but it’s not by design. I do enjoy listening to Bjork, Goldfrapp, First Aid Kit, Beth Orton, Garbage, and Drain STH.
As a 56 yr old who's always been a classic rocker with an emphasis on metal and hard rock, I've always liked a lot of '70s pop (a bit of '80s pop too) as well as lots of '70 soul and R&B. I also worked in the dance club industry in the late '90s and early 2000s and was surprised when I found myself liking some techno. Also, I got dragged to a Shakira concert and absolutely loved it. Much more rock-oriented than I was expecting. I would definitely see her again.

Neil Diamond is a guilty pleasure for me. My best friend in high school played Hot August Night all the damn time and at the time I hated it cuz I was into rock and metal… but over the weeks and months…I grew to understand just how amazing Neil is as a songwriter. All good stuff!
You like what you like - no problems at all. For me it is the Mamas and the Papas even knowing the story, the voices are magical.
Absolute consensus about how great Lady Gaga and Kate Bush are. I couldn’t agree more. How about some Sarah Brightman? She’s fantastic too. But also some of the eighties Diva’s : Kim Wilde, Nena, Nina Hagen. I’m not ashamed too admit I like that stuff. Definitely more enjoyable than Bon Jovi or your average Nu-metal band!

I've a similar t shirt story. Back a few yrs ago I was going to see the eagles in dublin. I had a megadeth rust in peace shirt on. I didn't know that mettallica were playing dublin the same night. As myself and my brother were walking towards the eagles show we were meeting droves of mettallica fans walking in the opposite direction all heading to mettallica. I must have got stopped about 10 times by guys saying hey ure going the wrong way the mettallica gig is this way. True story.

I wouldn't really call them "guilty pleasures" as I hardly ever feel any guilt about liking something, but these are albums I like from genres that I rarely listen to:
1: Ramones-"Rocket to Russia". I hate punk rock, except for this album. They have a bunch of songs throughout there other albums I like, but this whole album is great top-to-bottom
2. B-52s-"Wild Planet". Don't like much New Wave, but I'm surprised by how much I love this album, espcially songs like "Private Idaho", "Give Me Back My Man", and "53 Miles West of Venus"
3. Concrete Blonde-"Bloodletting". Saw "Joey" on VH1 Classic once and thought it was really good. Decided to hear the album and this was first "Goth Rock" album I have liked. "Caroline", "Days and Days", "Bloodletting", and "The Beast" are all also great.
4. Debut Quarterflash album. Like almost every song on the album. "Harden My Heart" is fantastic and I love Rindy Ross's voice.
Rindy Ross is amazing.
Wild Planet is a great album indeed. Also the first one.
Rocket To Russia is more pop punk than punk.
Joey loved early '60s pop, therefore him wanting Phil Spector to produce one of their albums.
Sherbet is a band I've really gotten into recently. They were an Australian band from the 70s who later turned into the Sherbs in the 80s, which I remember them from songs like No Turning Back, I'm Alive and We Ride Tonight.
I'm with Pete with Barry Manilow, the guy is awesome.
Also for me, Frank Sinatra, Adam And The Ants, The Police, Backstreet Boys (sorry!), Eric B and Rakim...just to name a few.
I don't consider Frank Sinatra or The Police to be guilty pleasures. Backstreet Boys definitely are, though.

A great show by the Hudson Valley Squares. Chris proved to be just as funny without sound. Ryan’s impression of his dad talking about Tony Bennett also a great laugh. Nick’s choice of Kate Bush was a great mention and Pete really went for the skeletons. And on top of it all, as always some new music to track down and enjoy. Some of mine would be Dixieland jazz, big band music and Frank Sinatra. Mom was always playing Sinatra and other mail vocalists and would constantly quiz me about who was singing the song she was listening to on the radio. Thanks again, guys for two shows this week. Looking forward to next week already.
