I think you yourself saved me some stress when making some upcoming videos on weapons I planned to do but was worried how they'd be received since the weapons have such a negative bias to them but barely anyone in the tf2 community understands how to be tactical so they ask for buffs on weapons that they can't brainlessly use. Just, thank you so much.
I think that every single complaint about a weapon getting banned can be derived from the fact that people REALLY hate the fact that you can't redeploy the Base Jumper midair anymore
I am personally working on a caber video myself, FINALLY we see someone who truly understands the caber. "Its not about the money, its about (licks lips) sending a message. Everything KABLOOEY!" For real though, the caber is super underrated. 1 shotting a heavy or a soldier-medic combo is legitimately viable. Also at 9:07 you say that caber jumping is unviable, when it could not be further from the truth. Caber jumping can allow you to escape or "Perch" as I call it. Perching lets you drop out of the sky like a bird and one shot medics. I love caber surfing off of my enemies and landing on their heads for a killing blow.
9:30 The Roblox version (Typical Colors 2) has this exact idea. Although it's much harder to get crits because the only charge with crits doesn't let you turn (don't ask me why) you can kill a lot more, though the damage penalty is harsher (-54%) so killing heavies is harder. There's also mini-crit on blast jumping 💀.
I love when i use sticky jumper with the parachute and caber i just go zooming then hit a heavy deals cute mini crit damage then get mowed down by bullets
The one thing the Caber can be really good at is a tankier Hybrid Knight. You now carry what is essentially a pocket crit nade, which is an underrated opener/follow-up for a push when followed by 2-4 nades. You can clean house in 4 seconds solo if played right.
The B.A.S.E Jumper and GRU part reminds me of the Ambassador. People genuinely think it's worthless just because you can't be a Sniper with no tunnel vision, better mobility and with a get out of jail free card. As a Spy main who uses the Ambassador like 90% of the time, I would genuinely be pissed if they reverted it to the old version, it would just encourage a Spies to play like Sniper, and would be absolutely infuriating to fight against, honestly more infuriating than a quickscoping Sniper because atleast the Sniper has to scope in, Spy can just headshot.
@@randomperson7350 wow that 1% scenario of easily 2-shotting light classes (including razorback sniper!) and med is really carrying hard then. Ofc this is why we need mini sniper who can go invisible back.
@4lksk363 yeah, especially when the enforcer can literally kill a razor back sniper in the same amount of time. Hell, the shot fall off penalty with the amby means that the only way your able to 2 shot a medic is if your right infront of them and the enemy team is nowhere to be found. I wonder what other mechanic spy has that rewards this type of play 🤔 (Also the speed penalty this gun has makes it so 3 shots with a normal revolver and 2 shots with the amby are comparable, so your doing all this extra skill for even less reward 💔) Tldr: the amby was balanced and skilful b4 being nerfed to the ground, and now its the worst revolver in the game lol
I watched around 75% of this video without subtitles. TH-cam now automatically turned them on after I continued watching, and now I want to fully rewatch it. Amazing subtitles as always, I wish more channels would use them so creatively
I think the BASE Jumper has a bit of a "Almost nobody uses it because Banners and Shotguns are so good and therefore it must be bad"-induced perception problem. I'd love to see a video on it.
great vid, looking forward to the 6s vid. my only regret is that the week we played your 6s team in the last etf2l season your team had a sub demo instead of you so you couldnt farm clips off us
about the Base Jumper, I personally just miss being able to cancel fall damage with it when you were able to re-deploy it as often as you wanted. Now its either you take the aerial position and slowly float back down to avoid fall damage and eat all the damage that being a near sitting duck gets you, or release early, eat fall damage, and then have to go heal. Personally I never really thought it that bad when people could redeploy it as much as they wanted, but knowing how much it can impact just getting airshot by any projectile class, I just want it to have a fall damage negation or resistance so I don't have to worry about breaking my ankles when rocket jumps chunk so much of my available health.
A second redeploy should have just 0'd the user's horizontal velocity. Make them drop straight down, and cancel'd out any self-explosion knockback. Idk about more than two re-deploys though.
get good? like he said airstrafe and hit tilted surfaces, being able to redeploy constantly is insanely broken negating all fall damage with no downside.
i hate to say this but this is a genuine skill issue. good soldiers and demomen are able to jump in ways that minimize fall damage. you were using the base jumper as a crutch and now must actually learn how to mitigate fall damage with no training wheels. you still take WAY more damage than you would with gunboats, i really dont see the point youre trying to make.
"imagine super mario maker but with a screaming american" gives the the vibes of minecraft steve in smash bros simply because of the same building your own platform to gain an advantage mechanic, except steve doesnt use sand and falls with the platform and you cant hit him through it usually
Why is how most people play the game some sort of reason to look down upon them. I just feel that especially with the base jumper section it devolved into "People who play the game casually and others who liked how interesting the weapon was before it was nerfed are just bad at the game and shouldn't ask for the fun thing back because they are bad." Probably not the intended way that was supposed to come off and to an extent I agree the base jumper is still good but man it used to be so much more fun and you would see people use it more often. Just because it's ok now doesn't mean that we can't wish the what it used to be, despite it being a little dumb. Also *18:35* "Sniper would like to know your location, (Yes / No)" and to a lesser extent the entire enemy team.
I reckon its because they've never really considered the fact that most people playing games are never on the top of the leaderboard, they all assume that everyone can just get top score or top frags when just simply alot of people cant/dont care for it. Unsurprisingly people are playing this game for fun to get away from the stress of real life, thats the first reason most people play, they dont want to just sit there and stress themselves out to struggle to become better at a game. I want to because I like the stress and struggle I love that stuff, but I understand that everyone I'm above probably doesnt want to and is here for fun and whats always funny to point out to people is that most people playing in a match will have a really negative K:D ratio. By the end of the day saying "get better at the *insert advanced tec that most players cant do* and stop complaining that *insert weapon countered by the tec* is making the game unplayable for casual players" is a sure fire way to make your game dead, look at so many other shooters that never balanced things for the majority of players and only focused on top end player stats. We've got a long forgettable list of forgettable dead games for that.
The best way to use the caber is to hit your killbind if you kill a few people with the initial hit, or after you clean up. You got your value out, no need to stick it out longer. Instant trip back to base, fresh caber, fresh shield charge.
7:23 Holy shit, someone finally mentioned it! I fucking love that gamemode! Edit: Wait, I think Htwo did a video on it. 15:55 It's bad because you're basically a floating duck while mid-air. The mechanic itself is fine, the problem is you getting airshot in 3 seconds after you pull it out. If the enemy doesn't have any classes/players that could airshot you, it's really strong, but a normal match will almost always have some players that could airshot you at a moment's notice. The strafing is simply just too slow. I still find it really fun though. 16:39 Ambushing people from above is a legitimately good strategy with the base jumper... until you try to do it a second time. If the enemy doesn't suffer from short term memory loss doesn't suffer from short term memory loss, they'll remember what you did last time and act accordingly.
Solarlight wasn't cooking all that well with the B.A.S.E Jumper tangent to be honest. Yeah, TF2 players struggle to look up, but after you do funny parachute kills enough times in the same lobby people are gonna wise up to your shit and start to expect you, and when that happens the strafe speed is, as you said, entirely too slow to do anything. Any half-competent Sniper should be able to consistently headshot a Soldier who's only really moving in one direction and doing so incredibly slowly. It might take a couple of shots at most to hit one, but it's not like he's moving sporadically. You either have to use it at a height where it wouldn't realistically matter whether or not you had the parachute equipped, or you get one, maybe two, good clips of you absolutely destroying the enemy team with the parachute. It's high skill, sure, but it's also just not worth the skill investment unless you really find its hyper-specific playstyle fun. Soldier's shotguns are, in 99% of the instances you run into, going to be better than the parachute, and I won't even go into detail on how the banners are better.
If you have good movement, you can make it extremely difficult for any player to airshot you (even with the reduced air control). You also don't even need to restrict the base jumper to being an ambush tool, for soldier it is pretty much just free high ground and makes it incredibly easy to shoot players.
For the Base Jumper, Solar did fail to provide sufficient evidence to why the Base Jumper was nerfed. And the reason is simple. It was indeed high level play that was the reason for the nerf. As you say, the slow air speed does indeed allow players to have a much better chance at tracking and hitting the target, along with a predictable trajectory due to the fall speed. However, if you have the infinite redeploy like it used to have it becomes far easier for a skilled player to rapidly change how fast they are descending. It would make their movement far more unpredictable, and even drastically increase their chances of evading fire. Abuse of the redeploy would allow you to much more easily evade while airborne. It's hard to adequately describe why it was nerfed, but in essence, even in competitive play, the base jumper allowed for some of the most disgusting air movement. It was far more difficult to hit a good base jumper as a projectile class. They could dance around in the air, making any airshot attempt far less likely to hit.
The pass time ressurgence is coming. Fear the ball ye mortals for it has come with the taste for blood...well it will come in the first fourth of 2026 probably
A two hour video in the works? You spoil us, Solar! Especially as someone who loves to come back to your videos to use them as background noise while doing something else. I look forward to your next content, no matter how long it takes. I love hearing people dive into all the nitty gritty aspects of their favorite games, so I look forward to what you have planned.
the only reason people blame competitive for nerfs is because people hate competitive and playerbase around it but that's a whole can of worms im not willing to open
Tbh I 100% think the biggest issue most people have with comp is just how only 4 out of 9 classes tend to be used which is kind of lame for a lot of people

17:33 I played the game for one month and total time of 100h and I confidently can say that I can airstarf and e Rocket jump very good i can even ctap :)
One correction, yes comp players were the reason for the nerf because medic oneshotting is broken and ruined the flow of the game. They wanted the caber to not one shot medics, Valve saw it and just made it unable to consistently one shot anything.
@@SolarLightTbh I think the main issue people have is just it being inconsistent and due to it's lack of any real use on regular demoman, considering he barely has any actual unlocks outside of the pain train
@@SolarLight i would say that the GRU is an exapmple of valve making every body happy more or less. Problem in comp - heavy too fast to mid with no downside - solution, health drain. There's a really big mountain of evidence that it was because of the competitive scene. Meat your match was a wery obius atempt at turning tf2 into a esport.

What if we upload a balance change and disguise it as a bugfix. Like "Fixed the bug where the Caber doesn't re-charge after after getting a kill"
THANK YOU for talking about something I've been internalizing for YEARS that people just make assumptions and complain about weapons they don't research how to use IT'S SO FRUSTRATING! I think you yourself saved me some stress when making some upcoming videos on weapons I planned to do but was worried how they'd be received since the weapons have such a negative bias to them but barely anyone in the tf2 community understands how to be tactical so they ask for buffs on weapons that they can't brainlessly use. Just, thank you so much.
now i wanna start playing base jumper soldier, been doing the direct hit panic attack combo for a bit, so good to have some change
At first glance I didn’t realise this was a solar light video, but I noticed the Cabre and TF2 damage numbers, then I double looked, I was like huh?

Wait its a mini? I though it was crit im very blind
1 or 2 years ago
People were complaining about the mini crit/crit charge alot (with the other shields) so they decided to remove them
The one thing the Caber can be really good at is a tankier Hybrid Knight. You now carry what is essentially a pocket crit nade, which is an underrated opener/follow-up for a push when followed by 2-4 nades. You can clean house in 4 seconds solo if played right.
I like youtubers that make epic subtitles
only the demoman would have a melee weapon with damage falloff
The B.A.S.E Jumper and GRU part reminds me of the Ambassador. People genuinely think it's worthless just because you can't be a Sniper with no tunnel vision, better mobility and with a get out of jail free card.
As a Spy main who uses the Ambassador like 90% of the time, I would genuinely be pissed if they reverted it to the old version, it would just encourage a Spies to play like Sniper, and would be absolutely infuriating to fight against, honestly more infuriating than a quickscoping Sniper because atleast the Sniper has to scope in, Spy can just headshot.
You're wrong
No, it's worthless bc in 99 percent of other situation u could use the ambassador in, stock is just better. The amby sucks now lol
@@randomperson7350 wow that 1% scenario of easily 2-shotting light classes (including razorback sniper!) and med is really carrying hard then.
Ofc this is why we need mini sniper who can go invisible back.
@@randomperson7350 I mean ofc and unlockable weapon that has a potential to outperform stock wouldn't be as reliable as stock duh
@4lksk363 yeah, especially when the enforcer can literally kill a razor back sniper in the same amount of time. Hell, the shot fall off penalty with the amby means that the only way your able to 2 shot a medic is if your right infront of them and the enemy team is nowhere to be found. I wonder what other mechanic spy has that rewards this type of play 🤔 (Also the speed penalty this gun has makes it so 3 shots with a normal revolver and 2 shots with the amby are comparable, so your doing all this extra skill for even less reward 💔)
Tldr: the amby was balanced and skilful b4 being nerfed to the ground, and now its the worst revolver in the game lol
after using the caber for almost 300 hours i didnt even know some of this stuff
Youre probably the only demoknight that can make the caber work , literally .

about the Base Jumper, I personally just miss being able to cancel fall damage with it when you were able to re-deploy it as often as you wanted.
It’s a high-risk weapon, you’re going above the enemy to shoot them. It’s ok (from a balance perspective) for it to be unsafe when you land.
i hate to say this but this is a genuine skill issue. good soldiers and demomen are able to jump in ways that minimize fall damage. you were using the base jumper as a crutch and now must actually learn how to mitigate fall damage with no training wheels. you still take WAY more damage than you would with gunboats, i really dont see the point youre trying to make.
Caber could never 1 shot Medics tho. It always did 149 max damage.
"imagine super mario maker but with a screaming american"
gives the the vibes of minecraft steve in smash bros simply because of the same building your own platform to gain an advantage mechanic, except steve doesnt use sand and falls with the platform and you cant hit him through it usually
Why is how most people play the game some sort of reason to look down upon them. I just feel that especially with the base jumper section it devolved into "People who play the game casually and others who liked how interesting the weapon was before it was nerfed are just bad at the game and shouldn't ask for the fun thing back because they are bad."
Probably not the intended way that was supposed to come off and to an extent I agree the base jumper is still good but man it used to be so much more fun and you would see people use it more often.
I think the shields checking for “wrench” might be for the truly all class melee weapons like the prinny machete and necro-smasher
So youre telling me you got alot of kills in the Persian Persuader (that is my main melee weapon in HybridKnight)
How do you play hybridknight with that sword if you are left with like 7 pipes? Serious question
@enn1924 my loadout, my rules
The best way to use the caber is to hit your killbind if you kill a few people with the initial hit, or after you clean up. You got your value out, no need to stick it out longer. Instant trip back to base, fresh caber, fresh shield charge.
It's okay solar light us htwo fans know what pass time is
real ones are playing passtime now!!!
In all fairness, comp 4v4 passtime is the GOAT ‼️
If the enemy doesn't suffer from short term memory loss doesn't suffer from short term memory loss, they'll remember what you did last time and act accordingly.
that second point assumes the enemy players look up, which people generally don't, that was solar's entire god damn point, *PEOPLE DO NOT LOOK UP*
Solarlight wasn't cooking all that well with the B.A.S.E Jumper tangent to be honest.

One correction, yes comp players were the reason for the nerf because medic oneshotting is broken and ruined the flow of the game. They wanted the caber to not one shot medics, Valve saw it and just made it unable to consistently one shot anything.
tbh it's equally possible that valve just didn't like it one-shotting medics given how tedious medic already is to play
