They sold this Lancer in Hong Kong back to the 80s, the turbo version with 4G63 sohc 2.0 engine 170hp which enough to beat the then very popular Bimmer 323i. I remember one time I was driving my Celica GT with 2TG engine around 120mph on the highway, the guy with this Lancer turbo pull up from behind (took no time at all) next to me then gave me thumbs up and took off and disappeared.

I still remember these "box-type" Lancers as they were often called all over the streets of Manila back in the eighties. My aunt had one of this in forest green in SL trim. We owned a first gen 1979 Lancer then.

In the UK we got these with the word OBRUT 0002 on the lower front bumper, so when viewed from a rear view mirror you knew what was coming up behind you.

In Trinidad and Tobago, the 2nd Generation Lancer is commonly called "The Box Lancer", and it a common project car for many, which some actually use as a Daily Driver. Many swap in the SR20DET into them. They are everywhere, hahaha, much like 120Ys. Staples of the countryside.

I live in Philippines and there are a plethora of lancer boxtypes here and that’s because they are a cult car here
alot of them can be frequently seen on the road (that’s because they’re over 40 years old and LTO only allows cars over 40 years old to be operated on weekends) while alot of them are at local junkyards waiting to be bought and restored
They’re like the AE86 of Philippines

    • @wasabicars

Not true about the 40 year old rule. The reason you dont quite see classics anymore in the Philippines because they don't want their parts to get stolen. Like emblems and etc.

Ian Santi Boxtype is more like the Lancer Evos of the 80s cause in the initial d legend movie some non protagonist characters(well a member of akina speed stars)used to drive a white Lancer EX And lancer nowadays are FF

Interesting to hear about Australia not getting these. Ex lancers (me and another 2 friends at the time had one each, I took mine to the crusher in the end)(we had ex GSRs even. I remember an old work colleague had one) and celests were dime a dozen in NZ, back in the day.

    Finally! Great video! 👍
I have seen a couple of them, but all of them at car shows. The Lancer Turbo owners really hang on to them here and they are more expensive than an AE86. About five years ago I spoke one of the owners and they were priced around 20k euros for a decent one back then.
I would love to own one of these myself, but I guess that will never happen...

Mine are geared a bit low for the freeyway, gonna source a 3.54:1 as mine right now probably tops out around 115mph and cruises 72mph at roughly 3900rpm

The engine is a G62B with the turbo head, BUUUUTTT I cannot tell what head it has. My Cordia has the T-stamped 8 valve head with jet valves, solid rockers with hydraulic adjusters. As far as I know there are 3 different types of G62B heads out there for the turbo engines, the biggest one being no jet valves then roller rockers with manual adjusters.

i'm shocked! i thought these were as common as hachirokus and fairladies, you learn something new everyday! i really love the boot's spoiler. discreet and elegant. really nice car, and looks really good on gray even though i love sapporo white :D
oh i forgot to mention! tell your passengers to use seatbelts!! my uncle had a gold menkio and when my grandma visited my uncles in 2013, a cop saw my grandma without her seatbelt and bye bye gold, he's still pissed lol. it's 2018 so i'll ask him if he was a good boy since :P

G'day Dan'l. Sweet looking Mitsubishi Lancer. What does the gold mean on your driver's license? :)

Hey, Jason. The immediate thing for me with the gold license was that I did't have to sit & watch the hour long video on traffic safety when re-newing. Also, you don't have to renew it for a longer period. It's cheaper. Also, insurance is cheaper.

Hi daniel, check out my channel which follows the restoration of my lancer turbo in the UK where they had 2.0 litre engines. In the UK they were a group b homogolation car for the rally scene and only built 500. Great vid, glad you managed to find one !.
