- This is DIRTBIKE5100 Trying to start his International Model LB engine with the help of his Father and Racer4560. It was difficult to start because the fuel line was loose and sucking air, preventing it from getting fuel suction. The temperature was over 100 degrees when they were trying to start the engine, I was glad I was handling the camera.

Just goes to show sometimes something so simple can kick your butt.
Glad they got it going 👍
last summer I restored a model LB 3-5 Hp that was gave to me from my uncle we ran it off a separate fuel tank for a bit to see if it ran but the threads into the mixing pot were all stripped out so the same thing happened but the gravity feed helped get it started all it needed was a fuel line new push rods and rocker arms and gaskets and my uncle said the oiler wasint working but after taking everything apart we found out the oiler only works after the engine is shut off it we are still confused about it now we were able to find parts easy in the usa the engine starts up in 2-3 spins now and now im fixing up a roller mill that came with it for a little fun at our local fair great vid love seeing old machines coming back to life
Makes you respect the classics, but appreciate the conveniences of the new engines.
I just stumbled across this gem from years ago. Man Little Dirt Bike was young! I have two LBs running on propane. Great little engines.
Everybody in the hobby starts out with an LA or LB!!☻
@@805ROADKING I have 3 😂👍
Hey Matt, what did you have to do to convert yours to propane?
Man, that took some serious effort to get going. I sure was glad to see it finally fire up for ya. It ran real nice once they got it going.
@RamblinAround Between the 4 of us we should have figured out the problem immediately. I mentioned early in the vid that I didn't think it was getting fuel. We found out later when we where putting it away that the fuel line was loose. Little Dirtbikes Dad noticed it when he removed the gas cup.
yeah He learned a good lesson that day, make sure the fuel line is tight!! once he fixed that it started on first spin!!☺
Good to know, yes, check all connections!
When it does go it's a very sweet runner!
One good trick for cold starting is to "lead the plug" electrode with a graphite pencil, usualy goes first time but you shouldn't need to do that.
I know it was a loose fuel line but hey, it works.
@dbzgt545 Likewise Dude!! Thanks for checking us out and commenting.
wow... a lot has changed in 5 years
@nave4pres2 Finally!! the fuel line was loose and was sucking air instead of fuel!! thanks for checkin' it out!!☺
I have a friend that has one, it starts right away. Fill it with warm water to pre-heat the cylinder (It helps) we run on gas until the water starts to steam then switch to kero. Fix what it wrong with and it will run well every time. Lost skin on my knuckle a few times starting it up...
The old down hill trick again superb
@sbartasek I tried hooking up a lawn tractor starter/generator up to one of my hit and miss engines but it wasn't powerfull enough. A buddy of mine does have one hooked up to one of his smaller hit and miss engines and it works fine.
Remember when you were a kid and you always saw old timers with missing fingers and stuff?
LOL.
babudas
babu Das
Usually sawyers.
@mbyr31 Thanks Matt!! Yeah it is a PITA, but ain't that why we all do it. Once ya figure out the problem and get them running it makes it all worth it, especially the old ones.
They were used mostly by farmers who would hook them up to water pumps, compressors, cement mixers, saws and anything you could hook up to them with a belt!!☺
Edit my last comment. Did not realize you found a loose fuel line. But LB's a really easy to flood. Glad she runs. Mine is almost restored. I've had it for 35 years or so, since I was a kid, and just got it running again. Got any spare mag points? IHC mag.
Great little engine , just needs a little TLC and she'll be just fine . I got to say though my ears are still ringing from that starting handle snapping back on that flywheel 😆😅🤣👍👍🇺🇸
@steamwally They said that engine usually starts on the 1st or 2nd crank. I'm gonna try that graphite trick on my LA, I always have a hard time starting that.
I don't think I could resist the temptation of using either a drill with a rubber tire mounted or a belt driven starter motor on that huge flywheel!
exelente motor amigo, funciona muy bien, costo un poco hacerlo funcionar pero valio la pena, hermoso lo felicito.
@IHcubcadet Thanks, She's a real runner now!!
@vidman008 Thanks Ron!! Anytime you get 4 stubborn Gearheads together something is gonna get started, even if it is 100 degrees out.☺
@TheCarnaldi Gracias Amigo!!☺
I really like the old LB's. Did they have the removable cylinder liners???
Pouring gas through the exhaust valve is a new one to me. Not saying it is a bad idea, just never thought of that before.
Same
Thats would be better with spraying gas in the air intake port .I often use to spray propane in my two strokes stationnary engines when they are hard to coldstart : the engine starts on the first pull !
Greg Offenback same here I never saw the before, learning al the time.
So You're lucky!
Here in central of europe, the situation is different... I was on search for an antique Deutz or Lister or Petter engine, but the search was hard and I only found restored (and extremely expensive) ones or totally scrap (and still expensive) even replacment parts are rare and expensive, so I choosed a chinese product - wich is not as well finished, but it runs well.
great video my friend
@MrJSXU The gas line was loose causing it not to get suction, they fixed it now it starts on first spin!!☺
An LB with a good mag and a reliable fuel supply will start in 3 - 6 cranks after you get the hang of it. Fuel needle out 3/4 to one turn, choke valve pressed down and give it a good spin.
@SmallEngineMechanic I'm gonna try and make it Saturday.
@jasongiddensviper478 Yeah, they fixed the problem and now it's as good as new.
@ingridgott Thank You Ingrid!! ☺
Seems to be working well after you get her running.
Awesome engine got one myself just like it
I have a few of these MD engines in my collection. This is a good catch.
BUT!! One should never leave the thumb wrapped around the crank handle when
starting. If the engine should be improperly timed it can break the thumb off yer hand under reversing rotation on start.
petejulie1000
Didn't you know that blue rag prevents thumb breakages?
Yes
but to the buy that's filming.... good job for keeping these kids interested. no disrespect intended. just to the IHC company. lol. Go deere.
Yeah that thing on top is a water hopper!!☺
Don't know!! I had one but never had one opened up!!☺
Thanks Mate!!☺
sounds strong!!
Sounds great.
It wasn't flooded, it wasn't getting any fuel. The fuel line was loose, as soon as they tightened the line it started right up
@pimpinpenz fuel line was loose and it was suckin' wind!!
@JDMowerGuy1998 Sure did Bobby!!! ☺
@farmerphil indeed ive had it happen before but nothing happened. is this the phil off of fostertown?
Wow dirt bike is so young. Lol
72 FullerFire
where are these engine used
...
Yeah Buddy!!☺
oh that's really cool it might make one hell of a go kart ;)
@handclamp Yeah, sometimes they can be real workout!!
I'm sure these old engines know who's cranking them! I let a friend start my Ruston the other day, first swing. I went to start it at a rally, it took pencil lead to make it start.
It seems that either the condensor or the coil in the magneto is breaking down and will have to be replaced, a condensor is affordable at £6 but a coil is not at £100!
What a bugger magneto's are.....
Where there's a will,
there's a way!
@farmerphil I'll make sure the kid sees this comment, They don't realize what a kick back can do until after it happens
keep on trying liked that .
Gut 😊 Motor top
You should have ran it with a spray of starter fluid to see if the air/fuel mixture was indeed the problem.
All that was wrong was that they flooded it. I have an LB in my shop right now. Mine will start with 1 backpull choke on, 1/2 turn on needle valve, and 1 good start pull. Away she goes every time. Except if I flood it. Then I crank like crazy like these guys. Pulling the plug on these is a small pain.
is there a check valve in these for the fuel pick up? looks like it would make sense. mine looses prime then dies. i have it belted to a 1HP electric motor to find this out.
Ah, nothing but fun. At about 7 min Bill is getting a little sick of the thing.
You going to Jacktown this weekend?
DAT S A SPECIAL ENGINE,LOOK STRANGE BUT SOUND PRETY GOOD,THANK U 2 SHARE SERVANT OF GOD ,Y CHILDREN GO 2 SCHOOL INTERNET IS THE BEST SCHOOL +GOOD 4 PARENT 2,I NEVER LEARN AT SCHOOL LIKE WAT I LEARN NOW N I AM 58,SO IF I CAN LEARN SO MUCH CHILDREN CAN 2, CHILDREN R LEARNING MACHINE ,NOT ONLY THE BOYS GIRLS 2,MEN N WOMEN NEED 2 B EQUAL ,IST NOT COLOR THE PROBLEM ITS BETWEEN MEN N WOMEN. WE NEED 2 START WITH CHILDREN,IF MEN DONT RESPECT WOMEN HOW HE CAN RESPECT NATURE ,WOMEN IS NATURE.
Esse estava difícil de pegar. Rio RJ Brasil
It wasn't run long enough to get hot!!☺
man that thing was so hard starting! i wish they had mor of these engines in canada i can never seem to find any. what was rong with it?
Yeah..... you got it
If I heard that older fella say "hmmmmf! " one more bloody time..... LOL just kidding. glad you got er going. : )
@rmTimW lol!! Check about 8:10 into the video. ☺
My grandparents had one of these connected to an electric generator
Okay, if You think so... I would not risk it. Not with my newer Lianfa TL-170 where it's not a problem to get repair parts) and for sure not with an antique collectors engine like this one.
Yeah, definitely sound like low compression. Needs a set of rings if you could find them that size.
not much compression but nice compact motor
Need this In a motorcycle!!!
@805ROADKING lol that sucks wasted alot of engergy trying to start it
Are looks deceiving or is that an *overhead valve* engine?
I thought the hole in the top was to be filled with water for cooling?
You are correct! I hope they didn't burn it up.
lornaz1975 Thanks lornaz I thought so.
It is, but the engine will be fine without water for a while.
There is lots of cast iron mass there that needs to heat up before the engine would be damaged. These engines don't run that hot anyway. They are a low stress design.
The compression ratio on these is something like 5:1 or maybe even less.
deutz numero uno
@ils360 Once they fixed the problem, it ran like a Bear!!
what was that engine used for because I've never seen anything like it
is the motor a water cooled
Где вы его нашли?
Good...
Low compression probably.
I like video old mashine
gooooos aku sampek melu pegel. seng ratepak apane
Better get some water in it.
@coffeefish Thanks Fish!!
For others' reference, jump to 8:05
Nou Evropa... AFRICA !!! )))
8:15 WIN!
nice engine tempremental little buggers I had one and it was a sod to start everytime blew itself to pieces at a rally one day when goveners stuck open didn't last long BOOM bits flew everywere bye bye LB
Drill on engine starting
Toop👍
Awesome cutoff jeans lololol
that thing sounds like a lawn mower i had
Me MRS. WANNA TRY COOKING FRENCH FRIES IN WANNA THESE BY FILLING THE HOPPER WITH MAZOLA OIL.
Việt Nam 🇻🇳 6/1/2019
Very old the machine
@pearsonba350 Ain't that the truth!!
Dont wrap your thumb around the handle, if it fires backwards you'd lose your thumb
Will S. It's spring loaded, it pulls itself into the flywheel, I've got a LA, it's the same way
Ciao
