    These are the memories that a young man will never forget. His dad teaching him all he knows and spending quality time with him. This is so heartwarming. Forget the mower, which is awesome and all but wow. So rare these days for the dad to actually spend quality time with his son. A++ dad right here. I can only hope to be such an awesome dad when my sons gets this age. Thanks for the video and the feel goods!

    Hope this comes out as a positive suggestion.... great job and wonderful to get your son involved. I would add a rock guard on the back, even if it is just lengths of chain hanging down, because you could send some debris out the back of that pretty easily. Look at most brush hogs or other mowers and you always see either chain or a big piece of steel to keep folks safe. Thanks for taking the time to film the project and share it with us. Just the right level of detail, not too deep in the weeds where we watch you paint it and then let it dry... lol. Keep it up, I would watch more of your videos.

    Bravo to you! My father took me everywhere with him & we fixed everything, built everything as we went. I swung wrenches, sawed, filed, drilled, fixed brakes, engine & everything on our cars. We laid concrete, built huts, sheds & cabins, drunk tea together in the large garden & I learned to be the most practical & hands on person....I am now 55 years old & I am happy to roll up my sleeves & have a go at anything.

    THANKS for you post, I had a Swisher 60 pull behind that I got fed up with the B&S engine issues & belt issues, so I ripped Everything off the top of the deck & mounted 3 of the same engines on deck as you did, will convert the setup to propane after I break in the engines so I will not need throttle cables or on/off switches, just cut off the fuel for shutoff.

    I’ve never built my own but I mow with 2 swisher trail mowers ganged together. I will not mow with any other contraption. I do like the idea of 3 engines so you don’t have to worry about belts. I may be looking into doing a 3 engine setup with another swisher I have laying around this winter!!!!!
    Good build!!!!!

    Nice job. I replaced the motor on my snowblower with a Preditor motor. Great motors, comparable to Honda's.
    Great to see you having your son help you out. I'm 67, my Dad did the same. I've always been able to find work because of him having me help him like you do with your kid.
    Fabrication skills in wood and metal, being able to diagnose mechanical and electrical issues in all kinds of machinery and tools, including cars, has served me well.
    I did go to college, learned design and drafting skills. I discovered that I am not suited to be chained to a desk all day, I need to get my hands dirty, move around, use tools. I need to be engaged with my work on a physical level.

    Wow. You're a genius. Such a great idea for a smoother cut with those tri-blades. Go look at Meg Mo System blades and you'll really set the woods afire. As someone who uses and has to redesign factory mowers for rougher work I really admire you. Wish I were your equal in welding. Super work, super idea, nice place to call home if you don't have to mow it. Mine's worse than yours.

    • @Hammerjockeyrepair
      @Hammerjockeyrepair 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Im not too sure about 3 times the fuel, A single engine with enough power to turn those 3 blades would need to be atleast a 10hp maybe even 14hp. and that would suck down a gallon pretty quick, but those push mower engines run forever on that small tank of fuel. Id say they burn as similar or less

    • @2Dehavilland
      @2Dehavilland  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought that two but it’s pretty efficient! I would say it’s equal to my 21 hp rider.

    A great project for dad and sons! An experience they will never forget.
    Since you have the caster holding up the back end, it seems like you could let the tongue pivot up and down. Then the mower would maintain a more consistent height and it would go over the ridges and through the valleys better that way.
    But man, it's got to be the loudest mower in the neighborhood, and you now have three engines to maintain instead of one. Maybe someday you and the boys can modify it with a single larger engine and a belt and pulleys.

    Very cool diy project! I probably would have made a much larger deck if I had a property like that. And you can make extra money mowing fields with those 173 cc engines. As a safety precaution, I'd weld chains on the back to hang down to help stop wood chunks or other dangerous debris from flying out the back.

      The mower's tongue need's a simple up/down pivot point in front of and near the tongue jack. It gives the tongue freedom so the deck can float on it's wheels. It can be made from 2 short pieces of bar stock welded or double bolted to one side of the tongue and loosely single bolted on the other side of the tongue.

    • @TheKajunkat
      @TheKajunkat 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking the same thing. It looks like the tongue is lifting the back of the ATV when it goes over a rise and causes the tail wheel to come off the ground. If that for some reason is intentional, go for it. I could see it putting stress on the tongue after awhile. maybe some type of limited joint on the tongue where it is only the tube. BTW, not really criticizing just commentating, that is a great home build and looks like it will work fine as is. It is just the tinkerer in me that wants to change it.

    • @jayss10
      @jayss10 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agree. You did an awesome job on the build. Like Johnny though I would recommend using a pivoting hitch so the mower can float. Like was noticed the rear of the mower came up at the top of a rise, conversely it will push down hard on the ATV/tailing wheel when rolling through a dip. Think hay wagon tongue.

    • @JT_70
      @JT_70 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      My Swisher has a standard 2” trailer coupler that connects to a 2” ball on my ATV. With it, I get all the up/down, side-to-side flexibility needed. Plus, it’s quick and easy to connect/disconnect.

    I have one of the older blue harbor freight engines on my lawnmower. I don't know if the newer predator engines are the same internally, but my engine had a centrifugal compression release mechanism that makes it easy to pull the starter rope. I found that it actually makes it harder to start the engine because you have to turn the engine over much faster before it would start and it would huff and puff a bit before it got up to speed. It would also stall if you bog it down in tall, dense grass. I disabled it by removing a small pin on the mechanism and it runs so much better now. Starts on the first or second pull and handles high loads without issue. The only downside is you have to rotate it to the compression stroke before starting or it will sting a bit when the rope handle slips out of your hand.
    I agree with some other comments that a pivoting tongue would work better. Just cut the tongue ahead of the height adjustment jack and weld on some type of hinge.
    Nice build and I hope it's working well for you.

    • @2Dehavilland
      @2Dehavilland  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice job, looks good. For that steep hill that you mow, I would recommend trying to put a pivot on the hitch otherwise it lifts as you reach the top and the weight of the rear of the ATV is carried by the hitch when you reach the bottom.

    • @2Dehavilland
      @2Dehavilland  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    That is a LOT of Horsepower...... Instead of cutting blades shorter, you could have easily made this thing 54" or bigger. 3 x 22" blades would make a nice 60" cut.

      That would be faster!!! I was trying to keep it the same width as the quad because I have a few trails I want to use it on.

      I really doubt he needed 3 predators to do it either... a belt would of driven all 3 haha

      BobRossTheGreat But you gotta remember they are only 5.5hp motors. Most home decks that have 3 blades belt driven are at least 18hp. He is comparable to that at 16.5hp for 3 blades but better as there is no losses in belt tension and pulleys.

      There's also a lot more loss on a riding mower. These puppies are direct.

      What Guru said , the 18 horse is hauling the tractor's and rider's weight. Here is is only turning the blades. Agree 1 engine could have ran all three blades easy. BUT, nice build none the less! Great job!

    Just want to THANKS Vise Grip for him posting his idea, I already had a Swisher 60" cut pull behind that I was fed up with due to a number of issues, I stripped EVERYTHING off the deck except the wheels, & mounted the same 3 engines on mine WITHOUT ANY cables whatsoever, and mounted ONE clear fuel tank that has a separate fuel hose running to each engine tank, LOVE IT, these engines crank on FIRST pull & have worked flawlessly for me, I have ANOTHER Swisher 60" that I will alter like this one where I can pull two at once to cut my 15 acre field. If I had Vise Grips address I'd send him a gift card & some pictures of mine.

      Im doing similar build... But I will be using two 196cc loncin engines.
      But dont forget to add fuel filter! It will save you a ton of time cleaning those carbs. Single tank is just a must have thing since on atv you can mow lawn for hours

      @@mihkus I've taken 2 60" Swishers, and done like this, BOTH work flawlessly, the 2nd one I welded a plate where the discharge was, removed ALL the underdeck baffles and cut the complete rear of the deck out for rear discharge, works GREAT on my 15 acre Florida pasture like yard, I can cut early morning with wet due grass with no clogs, next I will build a deck just like these without ANY sides.

      @@mihkus THANK YOU about that engine MFG info, the vertical Predator has been discontinued for about 2 years, I have 8 of those engines on projects, EVERY one will start at FIRST pull with 3 pumps of the primer, IF I run the tank dry I pump 5 times, I have NOTING but PRAISE about these engines, I'll try those you mention on my next build
